I'm from Lewisburg, just an hour away.
, My name is Daniel Foster, I am from Penn State and I stayed in Happy Valley for the Holidays!
and thank you for joining us again at !
Hi everyone. Happy New Year!
. A-1 Global competency is connected to all pathways. One example: Ag Ed is feeding the world – many implications
Small world! Did you happen to attend Penn State?
A1: is cross-cutting and fits in any/all pathways
Hi all, Laura from Chicago (originally Vermont), and we stayed in cold Chicago to show an Argentine guest around for holiday!
A1: Tough to pick one – the deeper we dug in, the more great global applications we found. Transportation is huge!
Hi- I teach in Dubai and was in Australia over the holidays
A1: I know I am biased, but lends itself to the study of issues that impact everyone: Food, Fiber, & Nat. Resources!
Good to see you again Sandra, is that a new blog?
A1: Concepts like multiculturalism, global sourcing/supply chains & marketing can be embedded in any/all CareerClusters
No. I knew little about Penn State until I moved here. It's a bit of a religion in central PA.
RT A1: is cross-cutting and fits in any/all pathways
Absolutely! If we can not eat or clothe ourselves, how do think about other issues?
Paige from Penn State tuned in and ready to learn from others experiences!!
I agree. shows how its even important to less obvious ones like electric and welding!
Great idea! Which stop was your favorite?
Yes! Sustainability is a huge issue and it cuts across so many career pathways!
Ken from Western Oregon Univ.In OR 4 holiday. Did go 2 Timberline lodge(outdoor Shining scenes filmed here)4 extended ski trip
Hi Laura! I'm trying with my blog but having a hard time to post every week... Happy to see you too! https://t.co/qtYxD2xaVr
Good to see you again Sandra, is that a new blog?
A1: Ag huge in Illinois. Ideas on how to market/approach Ag teachers?
A1: But don't forgot imp of in business, finance, IT/cybersecurity and many other pathways
OHio State--traitor. : ) I grew up in New England. Moved to PA 21 years ago from Boston.
Feel free to jump in as well! We love newcomers to !
Hi Ken! I was in Estes Park and visited the Stanley where they filmed the interior shots for Shining!
A1: Agricultural education encompasses so much & important across many places.
Ha ha, none of it matters much to me - I'm a native North Dakotan!
Wow, what is teaching there like? How long have you been there?
Q2: Why is global competence important for workers in today’s job market?
Do you mean how to work with them from the academic side? I'm sure we can find some ideas here!
We are trying with . is willing, just need to be presented Opportunities.
. and CTE keeps evolving. New pathways and opportunities, all linked to global issues in some way.
Nice! The best part of this trip was that we have so much snow this year, unlike last year.
Matt Holt, Penn State Agriculture Education student teacher joining in for a few minutes!
is working on taking their preservice candidates abroad! is helping them!
A1 - one in five jobs is linked to international trade
Yes! Like the new Green Energy pathway in Georgia for example.
. A-2 It’s a global economy and many workers are required to be dealing with many different cultures today
A2 1 in 5 jobs linked to international trade.23 million US jobs linked to international trade
I'm a Holt too! (Originally) :) Thanks for joining in!
A2: B/c employers want it! 80% of U.S. executives say that their businesses would increase if staff had intern'l experience
Hi Carl from Emerald, Australia
As we can see we all communicate globally so Ss do not know in what environments they will be.
A2 Have 2 be cross-culturally competent in 2days market. Also jobs call 4 criti think skills & understanding interconnections
A2: we are living in an interconnected world and we need to be prepared to work across cultures to solve global issues.
Hello Irasema Sanchez from Houston
A2: W/o understanding inter-relatedness and how to interact with other cultures and languages, you won't be qualified soon!
A2: I think one of the most important reasons is internal, not external. Our communities are becoming so much more diverse.
A2: Likely to work with people of diverse backgrounds & need to know about shared labor needs/rights across borders
. A-2 The more globally competent an employee = a competitive advantage in the workforce
Yes. I've got my 8 y/o daughter hooked, so we'll be there frequently
A2 Employers want employees with global insights and sensitivities.
Right - we don't even know what jobs will exist when our students enter the job market! Thanks for joining
Pre k teacher in Houston looking for class to
mholt5595: Matt Holt, Penn State Agriculture Education student teacher joining in for a few minutes!
A2 Important because we are required to work with people from different cultures even when working domestically
or where they will be located
Excellent point, Melanie. Even rural communities are becoming more global in population!
we need to teach languages at an earlier age to ensure higher proficiency levels too
absolutely!! Too many in our ed system haven't figured this out
Right if they aren't working with people in other countries they will work w/people from other cultures here
My Dir of Curr just talked to me about this yesterday.
Q3: What are some of the challenges of incorporating global issues and perspectives into classrooms?
Exactly! For example, in agriculture, we have a very global workforce.
A3: Competing priorities for teacher attention. PD providers haven’t updated resources to be reflective of today’s economy.
A2: Being globally-minded also gives students so many more options in life/work
- Must stop thinking means going somewhere. So much learning can occur in your classroom!
. Great point about rural areas - public isn't always overtly aware of those issues
What prep to ag ed students get around multicultural wkforce development?
A3: We are finding that there aren't enough global PD resources out there...yet! We are working on creating some!
and can be another separate thing to do. Must be integrated throughout!
A3: There's a perception by some that is just about foreign languages, when so much more
The Hospitality Pathway makes it possible to incorporate many cultures and global perspectives the culinary arts
A3: students being unwilling to change their perceptions and experience new things could make it difficult.
There is opportunity here for , but & are trying!
. A-3 Teachers need support to incorporate/integrate global competency as opposed to adding it on
Culinary arts is very global - you have to know different cuisines and dietary restrictions!
Agree completely, and hospitality is one of our growing job markets - definitely need a global workforce here.
super great point, there is so much more than travel within .
A2: to give our students an opportunity to be be global minded can open the door for more options in life
A2: Cultural awareness and tolerance is a big part of being well educated. Having knowledge/skills is not enough any more!
A3 limited understanding of what global perspectives entails by instructors. A concept &skill many not traditionally learned
Yes! I talked with today about the great work they have going on!
A3: Current resources, developing a global perspective that is not limited to economics, & equity of access to job prep/ed
One issue is that is viewed as something extra. People think they cannot possible squeeze in 1 more thing
A3: teachers needs to tools/supports to help see where is a natural extension of their curriculum
A3: Cuts barriers and discrimination helps prevent prejudices
Dont get me started!!!! YESSSSS
True! Being more aware of the Local provides another perspective, PLUS added incentive to take action https://t.co/S7V11Nvlva
- Must stop thinking means going somewhere. So much learning can occur in your classroom!
Agreed.Ts need to see that it can be interwoven with what they do already.
. ACTE is working w Asia Society and others to identify ways to support teachers efforts to integrate
Right! We have to spread the word that it enhances what is already happening in the classroom! Integrate!
What do u say 2 a small town farm Ss/Ts to make globaled a priority? We re all interconnectedbut why does itmatter practically?
I think part of this is because we talk about as its own thing, so teachers expect others to be trained.
We are very excited about the new global project!
I think this is one of the biggest challenges, changing that perception
I'm small town, and big challenge is getting them to understand they have their own culture.
I agree! And they miss the big cultural component... Traditions, food, economy, etc. https://t.co/wcyDMwWJC5
A3: There's a perception by some that is just about foreign languages, when so much more
Q4: What are some resources to help teachers integrate global perspectives/issues into their classrooms?
agreed! https://t.co/vlxsiUsefk
A2: Cultural awareness and tolerance is a big part of being well educated. Having knowledge/skills is not enough any more!
Very proud of leading State Officers from across nation to South Africa this month!
Today's crop may be domestic, but tomorrow"s may be going to Japan - ask the soybean farmers in W Ohio
3: How are we training preservice teachers to be globally competent educators?
Great advice! I'll try it after I finish changing this diaper! Ha! https://t.co/9X5SlOWt40
Best advice I got was break it into 30 minute chunks each day, Write title-outline-draft-and revise, then schedule for a Monday
. I recommend having your local business leaders describe the global issues they face
That's a fantastic place to start! I also tie back into our economy. Here in PA that means Hershey
agreed! Also think part of it is Ts not traditionally trained in global ed. It's still fringe in T prep in many ways
I think we always need to remember the great resources of ! is our keynote for
A3: Clarity about what means. Getting adults to be more tolerant and less ignorant
so interesting. Why don't they see themselves as a culture? Why do you want them to?
Excellent point. Connecting global to preservice is essential for our students. Requires dilligent effort.
Great Question! is trying in multiple ways including early field exp. abroad & activity on campus!
I do social studies methods for preservice Ts. In there various global dimensions underlie all we do
Fringe if viewed as something "separate". Core if used to accomplish multiple goals.
I was thinking the same questions!
Agree and we need start in Early Childhood https://t.co/PtsEZPYtfI
A3: Cuts barriers and discrimination helps prevent prejudices
I had a student in W. OH who had this exact experience w/ tractors & soy bean farming in Japan.
They assume everyone thinks like them and acts like them. They don't realize they are "foreign" to others.
A5: Through social media-social networks give today’s young people unprecedented access 2new connections &opportunities
totally get inter connectivity but why, practically does this require a global perspective?
Exactly! Need to think outside box instead of within own community
Boom! I have the same question... https://t.co/Bh1QleH8L9
3: How are we training preservice teachers to be globally competent educators?
A4 Many software apps including are used on a global scale. Regardless of the culture, the skills are the same
great point, I always love reflecting on the connections I have made and insights I have gained on social.
Yes! Unfortunately, from what I see too often it's not viewed that way
A3: social media! Conversing with others around the world, real time, professionally and responsibly!
making sure crops are marketready for other than US consumption. Also the workers - often a diverse bunch
The is doing some great work in this area!
If they don't realize there are other ways of thinking, they won't recognize opportunities.
Q5: How can we best expose students to diverse career pathways that require global skills?
Teach in Selinsgrove, live in Lewisburg.
I think we are highlighting the tension within teacher prep programs, it's all in the framing.
Opportunities that could turn out to be massive growth adventures
. Make sure to read the paper released yesterday - some good examples, some from smaller communitieis
A5: Site visits, hosting experts, skyping, global project work, research assignments that require sources outside the U.S.
A5: In Switzerland, students have to job shadow in 7th grade - it would be great if all US students did that for global jobs!
This is the answer! https://t.co/w9Fx1lGK6r
