A1: It's that shared experience. Everyone is together, engaged in the same activity. It is a powerful tool for community that teachers have the ability to grasp and grow. #ILAchat
A1: Reading aloud is a tried and true practice that engages the students in listening to a text as a teacher models thinking aloud about new ideas and connections. It creates a shared sense of community across ALL grade levels. This joy begins at birth! #ilachat
A1: Reading aloud is one of the best practices for modeling and engagement, especially for ELs. It increases receptive and expressive vocabulary, improves comprehension, enhances creative and critical thinking, and allows for commonality. Most of all-- It's FUN! #ILAchat
Hi! I'm a literacy fangirl and curriculum maven... excited by the recent TSUNAMI of interest in strong literacy practice!
I tried to capture all the seismic articles here:

#ILAChat I am a professor at the University of Central Oklahoma #UCO#Bronchos. I teach reading and reading education courses. The last book I read aloud was to college freshman in December was The Little Red Fort.
hi all, I'm late because my daughter and I were just reading Turtles All the Way Down together and got to the part where we learned the meaning of the title! glad to be here talking about my favorite part of any day, read alouds! #ILAchat
A1 #ReadAlouds and the shared experience around a book creates bonds over story, ideas, characters and experiences. They can make our world seem a little smaller. #ILAchat
A1: Read alouds give students sacred spaces to live as readers: to get caught up in a story, to focus on thinking over decoding, to learn from the teachers’ thinking and to build a reading community. #ILAchat
A1: The read aloud transforms the text from something we might have simply assigned into something we are able to get inside. We are not removed from the book. We help to move the book. And students come along with us as we read into, through, and into shared response. #ILAchat
A1: reading aloud creates an inclusive environment for all learners, increases student understanding of language, builds students background knowledge, has been shown to improve comprehension, and even hooks the most distracted or disengaged student. #ILAchat
#ILAchat Where I am in rural SC, they hear me speak words in a way they’ve never heard before, tone inflection, vocab. Sheer exposure to words increases.
A1: I believe read alouds frees students from having to focus on trying to analize the words and simply enjoy the words flowing into their ears.
Especially for our struggling readers
#ilachat
A1: With the teacher read aloud each student in the room gets to hear the one who should be the "best" reader in the room for his, her, their experience and degree of expertise in reading text with intention and prosody. Students don't forget the "good" read-aloud. #ILAchat
A1: It's that shared experience. Everyone is together, engaged in the same activity. It is a powerful tool for community that teachers have the ability to grasp and grow. #ILAchat
#ILAchat I’m director of reading and literacies teacher prep program @ university of Rochester’s Warner School of Ed. We have our annual month long read aloud promotion in February- share your love of reading with a child, post pics reading together using the tag #read4luv
My students enjoy our daily read aloud time. They always notice if we do not have time for one! They love having someone reading to them...may it be a picture book or a chapter book, they're hooked. They gain exposure to worlds they've never been before. #ILAchat
A1 #ReadAlouds support home-school connections, create a love of reading and ensures caregivers/parents are PARTners in supporting reading as lifework. #ILAchat
A1: Reading aloud levels the playing field for all kids. They can just sit back & take it all in. They don’t have to struggle through words or use a strategy. They just get to experience the story for what it is. We get to model the joy of reading! #ilachat
Read alouds are great opportunities to dig into vocabulary words, comprehension growth, fluency and so much more! It also increases their motivation to read different type of texts. #ILAchat
A1: Reading aloud levels the playing field for all kids. They can just sit back & take it all in. They don’t have to struggle through words or use a strategy. They just get to experience the story for what it is. We get to model the joy of reading! #ilachat
A2: Students have a higher level of listening comprehension than reading so reading aloud to Ss at a level slightly above their current level exposes them to texts that challenge their present reading ability. #ILAchat
A2: While 77% of teachers set time aside for independent reading and/or read-aloud time, only 36% do this every school day. Read aloud - every day. #ilachat
A2: Regardless of grade or age level, reading aloud to students helps them master language, exposes them to increasingly difficult texts, creates a collaborative atmosphere and models fluency. For ELs, it breaks through the last barrier and builds confidence. #ILAchat
A2: All students, regardless of grade level, deserve a high-quality literacy community. Evidenced by the Global Read Aloud work with @pernilleripp , it's not about grade level, it's about joy and commitment. Who wouldn't want this for ALL kids? #ilachat
A2: Each new stage of childhood brings unique celebrations and challenges. Reading aloud helps us connect together and reminds us the power reading has to learn about ourselves and the world. #ILAchat
A1 #ReadAlouds and the shared experience around a book creates bonds over story, ideas, characters and experiences. They can make our world seem a little smaller. #ILAchat
#ILAchat A1 Read alouds allow students to have access to great books they may not be able to read on their own. Students are a community of readers listening to a shared text. The model of fluent reading has no better vehicle than a read aloud.
A2: #readalouds help us understand our WORLD, not just books. Kids of all ages have that need to understand the world around them and to grow as individuals. #ilachat
A2: #readalouds help us understand our WORLD, not just books. Kids of all ages have that need to understand the world around them and to grow as individuals. #ilachat
All students benefit from hearing metacognitive moves of good readers, as the texts become more complex so do the think alouds. It is invaluable #ILAchat
I join in GRA each year with my graduate education students so they can then do the same in their future classrooms. It's always an amazing experience! #ILAchat
A1: Read Aloud ‘hooks’ students into the world of story. Reading skills come to life exemplified through characters, setting, plot, theme and conflict. #ILAchat
A2 #ILAchat#ReadAlouds build background, expands understanding, experiences and information. RA especially help any and all ages to use short text for big thinking. aka #ThePowerOfPictureBooks
#ILAchat Hi from Indiana! I'm a third grade teacher and children's book author. Q1: Read aloud time is hands-down my favorite time of the day. Such an opportunity to bond with kids and model my love for words and reading. I love to point out the amazing things the author does!
#ilachat A2. Read alouds are important for students at all grade levels. My college and graduate students ENJOY when I read picture books to them. Enjoyment is one major reason, exposure to vocabulary, excitement, fluent reading, content information.
A1: Read alouds give students sacred spaces to live as readers: to get caught up in a story, to focus on thinking over decoding, to learn from the teachers’ thinking and to build a reading community. #ILAchat
A2: you can build community, give kids access to materials that might be too challenging to read independently, and engage your students to texts they might not have thought would interest them! #ILAchat
#ilachat A2 Books are friends that grow with us, a compass to help us find ourselves when we are lost and a welcome home party when we find ourselves there too. Read alouds extend all students an invitation to travel along with fellow companions and navigate all stages in life
Tonight's #ILAChat is all about #readalouds and as I follow along the threenager is begging me to come read him ALL THE BOOKS! ALL OF THEM! (We read 8 before dinner/bath. I swear I'm not depriving him.)
A1: The read aloud transforms the text from something we might have simply assigned into something we are able to get inside. We are not removed from the book. We help to move the book. And students come along with us as we read into, through, and into shared response. #ILAchat
#ilachat A2 Books are friends that grow with us, a compass to help us find ourselves when we are lost and a welcome home party when we find ourselves there too. Read alouds extend all students an invitation to travel along with fellow companions and navigate all stages in life
A2: Nothing builds community, trust, and conversation like read aloud. Also-read aloud provides access- to texts and thinking - that may not be as available in indep reading books #ILAchat
A1: reading aloud creates an inclusive environment for all learners, increases student understanding of language, builds students background knowledge, has been shown to improve comprehension, and even hooks the most distracted or disengaged student. #ILAchat
A3 continued: Students can benefit from how you take on the challenge of a read aloud. Preview the book for great small group or think aloud lessons. Build background. Use new voices. Create connections to real world and personal experiences. Be the bookś champion! #ILAchat
A3: I love to choose my read alouds based on quality collections, including @ILAToday 's Reading Lists for children, teachers, and YAs: https://t.co/J82duNeFUu Get to know your Ss through interest inventories and go from there! Read aloud possibilities are endless. #ilachat
A3: Active involvement is key for read alouds to benefit all students. ELs can get reading, writing, speaking and listening experiences through something as simple as creating a thought jot about character, setting, or theme and sharing out during a turn and talk. #ILAchat
A3: Think alouds - modeling our understanding with "I" language - benefits all students - see my Think Big With Think Aloud book for more on thinking aloud! #ilachat
A3 #ReadAlouds demand thoughtful responsive teachers planning with intention - be that pure joy, reading, writing, life lesson or layers of all of the above. Feed two birds with one hand. #ILAchat
A1) Benefits of a student reading aloud= learn vocabulary, improve attention span, strengthen cognition and literacy skills, boost memory.
Benefits of a teacher reading aloud to students= model fluency, rhythm, pace, and inflection, plus make reading fun! #ILAchat#literacy
#ilachat A2 Books like music are often able to cross cultural divides building a sense of community where everyone belongs no matter what experiences and background we bring to a text, there is equal value in a reader's perception, interpretation, and application
Welcome, friend. Edufriends like you and @Oonziela have HS students who benefit from your passion/knowledge/value for read alouds every day. #DreamTeam#CanCan#ILAchat
Anecdotal evidence:When I first started teaching (MS) I accidentally uncovered that the most avid, enthusiastic,& passionate readers had family members who still read TO them at home. Made a mental note for yrs later when I was a mom- Don't ever stop reading TO/with kids #ilachat
A3:I am a big believer in creating spaces that Ss want to read in. Having a designated space to go & curl up with a book is important. Furniture arranged in a circular shape so Ss can talk w/ each other during discussions. It becomes more of a book club than a classroom. #ILAchat
A3: Match students with "read aloud partners" so they always sit beside that person and have someone to chat with a few times during the book...no student is left out, and everyone is heard. Switch partners throughout the year for community building & diversity of ideas. #ilachat
A3: My best go-to strategy is choosing diverse books. Books that mirror my students' background and books that teach my students other valuable perspectives.
#ILAchat
A3: Love this short video from Rudine Sims Bishop: https://t.co/UVGUkIv8z8
Books can be mirrors and windows. Read-aloud experiences have that power.
#ILAchat
A3 Make sure books are inclusive of all students. Use this time to not only address literacy needs but social issues as well. This is a great time to create cultural and social awareness. #ilachat
a3: choose your text strategically, thinking about what you want to get out of it, prep! there's nothing worse than stumbling through your reading! :D #ILAchat
A2 cont: During read aloud adults are guiding Ss conversations and answering questions, which enables Ss to comprehend texts they would not comprehend on their own. #ILAchat
A3: book choice...finding diverse books, books that Ss might not discover on their own, books where kids can see themselves in the characters, love that one of my Ts just shared this list with the rest of the staff: https://t.co/NE4AqkVCXd#ilachat
A3: Student choice... sometimes I recommend read aloud book- but usually the class selects read alouds after a tasting to pique interest in TONS of possible books #ilachat
A2: #ilachat Shorter texts (poems, picture books) can be read aloud to secondary students to demonstrate content, reading strategies, or examples of literary elements.
A3: I have done virtual field trips prior to reading a book, watched book trailers, had Ss #sketchnote during read aloud time, LOTS of discussion. Truly trying to make it an experience. Nothing matters at that time but the book we are about to enjoy! #ilachat
A3: The read-aloud situated to serve as a "ladder" (@ProfessorNana) presenting a glimpse or closer look at a larger concept to come of another text. Example, we read Lemony Snickett's THE DARK to talk about "The Belly of the Whale"/Drawing deep from within one's self. #ILAchat
#ilachat A3 Culturally diverse texts allows us to celebrate diversity, providing a window into another's world to better understand one another and to say to all students we see you, you matter
A3: Read with passion and enjoyment. No test. No quiz. Just the beauty of the words as we invite authors to share their perspectives. I love to hear students share lines that resonate with them. #ILAchat
A3: As the principal, best practice for me means read aloud in every classroom throughout the year, doing whole school read alouds over the announcements, and doing my Facebook live read aloud and book recommendations once a month #ilachat
A2.1 Read alouds can and should be embraced to all. There is no age limit required. As an adult, I listen to audio books all the time. They're enjoyable and provide entertainment. It's your opportunity to get lost in a story and forget about life. #ILAchat
If you put my name in a tweet along with @StevenLayne's I'll begin to think that I am something. Thank you, friend. I've been looking forward to this chat all day. As a secondary teacher in support of read-aloud for many years, it is good to be here and to be a part. #ILAChat
In reply to
@JoEllenMcCarthy, @ILAToday, @StevenLayne, @StevenLayne
A3: Best practice=commitment to making it happen. Even on a field trip day...we can read a poem together after attendance and before the bus. Read aloud daily=#MyOneNonNegotiable#ilachat
Hey all! Ms. H here. I’m a high school English teacher in Chicago, Illinois. Today, I read aloud the poem “Tonight I Can Write” by Pablo Neruda and an excerpt from Who Will Cry When You Die? by Robin Sharma. Eager to talk about #readaloud for secondary students. #ILAchat
#ILAchat A1 read alouds let students hear the BIG 3 Rs
Rhyme
Rhythm
Repetition
- match that with big book visuals and you have a powerful punch for ELA learners of any age and all young learners
So true! I hate that so many teachers are made to feel that everything, including read alouds, need to have an accountability measure to "justify" the time spent reading. #ILAChat
A1: Where to start? The beauty of language. Stirring of emotions and new thoughts. A thirst to know more, to read more. To know we’re all in this world together: our stories are the story of us all. #ILAchat
#ilachat A3 In the wise words of @lester_laminack Let the first read be a gift! Don't pepper the book with so many teaching points that it loses the purpose with which the author put pen to paper. Be selective, not all books are created equal. Be intentional in think aloud.
#ILAchat trying to spread understanding of the value and need for reading aloud to children of all ages, including babies! Working with OBGYNs to spread the word to pregnant woman to read aloud starting at birth or earlier! Educators need to partner with many others, drs, etc
Thank YOU for all you do. You are a wonderful role model, mentor edufrind. Always love learning from/with you. Especially love sharing books tooo. :-) #ILAchat

Question 4 already... time flies when you are having fun... and learning lots. Inspired by all of the ideas and individuals here tonight. Thank you. #ILAchat
A4: One way read alouds can create equity is through book selection. We MUST read books with diverse characters from diverse authors so all students can see themselves within the pages of a book and gain new perspectives they would not have without reading. #ILAchat
A4: Reading aloud to students ¨levels¨ the playing field. Students do not have access to all of the same resources or experiences, but our classrooms and schools can help with being equitable in that capacity. Students should see themselves reflected in that environment. #ILAchat
A4: Equality would mean every child has a book, whereas equity is every child finding a book that fits. Read alouds expose students to diverse collections of texts & experiences-fiction & informational! Ask this: Is my read aloud collection reflective of ALL students? #ilachat
A4: So important to think about cognitive demands on learners. When all the energy is spent on decoding, not much is left over for connecting and comprehending-- read-alouds create cognitive space. #ilachat
A4: By taking the decoding off students & providing opportunities for all to try and show off their thinking, we engage more students. By taking students identities, interests & passions into account (book choice), we also foster greater inclusion #ILAChat
A3: Love the book, the story and the child. Reading from relevant materials. Texts, books, digital spaces. Tone, mood, flow and passion for the messages being communicated through the read aloud and the reader #ilachat
#ilachat A4 Because the teacher carries the print it allows readers across the continuum to partake in the thinking work which is the work that truly matters most, allowing for thinking work promotes grand conversation, grand conversation is what brings a call to action
A3: Love this short video from Rudine Sims Bishop: https://t.co/UVGUkIv8z8
Books can be mirrors and windows. Read-aloud experiences have that power.
#ILAchat
A3: Love the book, the story and the child. Reading from relevant materials. Texts, books, digital spaces. Tone, mood, flow and passion for the messages being communicated through the read aloud and the reader #ilachat
#ilachat I'm so glad someone posted this! I hear @lester_laminack in Montana in October and this is the comment I have thought about so much! I have been way over commenting while reading!
#ilachat A3 In the wise words of @lester_laminack Let the first read be a gift! Don't pepper the book with so many teaching points that it loses the purpose with which the author put pen to paper. Be selective, not all books are created equal. Be intentional in think aloud.
A4: I think the idea here is the very difference between "You read alone" and "I read aloud." Even if just for a moment, it is not reader vs. the book or the work. It is a shared experience in which some of the "lift and pull" can be done by the teacher (lead learner). #ilachat
A3) When editing the second draft of an analysis or research essay, students will have a partner read aloud their essay to them. Writers benefit from hearing their ideas read back to them to spot errors in wording or syntax, and readers practice fluency. #ILAchat
Reading for enjoyment, having care-free discussions about the text, making connections, and understanding certain traits and emotions characters can carry throughout the text. #ILAchat
A3: #ILAChat Read Aloud books that are relivent to the lives of your students...student backgrounds, student interests, instructional content, and sharing your personal favorites because #RelationshipsFirst#iteach1st
A4: kids just get to listen, experience, & get lost in the story. It takes away the struggles they may have with the actual words in print & get to enjoy the value and meaning of the words #ilachat
A4: Equity is vital. Read alouds are one way to give students that are lower level readers the opportunity to be on level with their peers. They are able to participate, think, and become more confident in their thinking. #EquityandExcellenceForAll#ILAchat
A3: As the principal, best practice for me means read aloud in every classroom throughout the year, doing whole school read alouds over the announcements, and doing my Facebook live read aloud and book recommendations once a month #ilachat
A4 #ReadAlouds = Common experiences for all to grow together as needed from various aspects of story, craft lesson, life lesson other. Shared experiences lifts level of interaction, engagement and opportunity. #ILAchat
Q3 #ILAchat The best read alouds happen daily, are carefully chosen, are not tested on, and are enthusiastically shared by the teacher. I hug books at parts I love and show how sad I am when we have to put the bookmark in.
#ilachat A4: Sharing read alouds helps to level the playing field-whether it be reading ability or background experiences. . . .children can hear the language without needing to decode it themselves, or learn about background information that they may have have experienced.
I hear you, on one hand, but on the other, I think that reading aloud IS justified. The kids I work with need every minute of school to deliver the goods, and reading aloud is a great part of delivering! #ILAchat
A4 #ReadAlouds Support the #CurriculumOfChildren, address cognitive and affective "standards" that can impact how and what we teach 1:1, small group as needed. #ILAchat
#ReadAlouds matter. Like @mattdelapena says, can’t think of a better place to explore complex ideas and emotions for the first time than inside the pages of a book...” #ILAchat
A4: Read aloud says, "We are all in this together. We are in this book together. And we are in life together." Including the characters IN the book. The books we choose and the characters they feature matter. Who are we including in our classroom? In life? That's equity. #ilachat
A1: Reading Aloud is a great way for struggling students to hear rich vocabulary, listen to a fluent reader, and it is perfect for modeling character voices and comprehension Think Alouds. #ILAchat#iteach1st
A5: Teachers must be readers themselves to ensure access to these kinds of books for the classroom. @DrKMcGee and I just wrote about this for the @nerdybookclub if others are interested in connecting! #ILAchat
A2 A 6th grader told his T that he was so glad she started reading aloud when we introduced picture books at the JHS. It reminded him of his elem experience. #ilachat
A4: Reading aloud to students ¨levels¨ the playing field. Students do not have access to all of the same resources or experiences, but our classrooms and schools can help with being equitable in that capacity. Students should see themselves reflected in that environment. #ILAchat
A4: Teacher read alouds create equity in the learning environment as All can Ss hear the language, tone, mood and make meaning of story for themselves. Read alouds also include picture walks, viewing pics as a means of meaning making & understanding #ilachat
A5 #ILAchat#ReadAlouds evoke feelings real and imagine, emotional truths for others to see/be seen, share/learn from and be touched because of all of the above.
A5: Read alouds should reflect on and connect to experiences in children's lives. They should be reminders of where they came from and where they are going while also providing them with the capacity to continue to learn and grow both in literacy and in life! #ILAchat
A5: It may not "click" at the time, but books should serve as windows, mirrors, and doors for Ss. Students should be able to reflect each year on their lives through literature. What did you learn about yourself/others through this week's/month's/year's RA experiences? #ilachat
While this picture was taken earlier this week, we got to share a read aloud of this new picture book by @poetweatherford. We have few picture books on tehs subject of rap and hip hop but I am so gladdened that this is one of them now. Spreading some love for this one. #ILAChat
A4: Reading aloud to students ¨levels¨ the playing field. Students do not have access to all of the same resources or experiences, but our classrooms and schools can help with being equitable in that capacity. Students should see themselves reflected in that environment. #ILAchat
A4: I think the idea here is the very difference between "You read alone" and "I read aloud." Even if just for a moment, it is not reader vs. the book or the work. It is a shared experience in which some of the "lift and pull" can be done by the teacher (lead learner). #ilachat
A4) Read-alouds help develop imagination and visualization as students build background knowledge. Texts can be above a student’s reading or lexile level, but not their comprehension level! #ILAchat
Hi, Carol ELA Consultant from @LongIslandNY late to the #ilachat convo but I am such a proponent of the read aloud experience that i'm glad I made it tonight.
Read Alouds serve to build new relationships with books and with class community. Read alouds also serve as a curation space for Ss across an academic year. #ILAchat
a4: read alouds are also a great way to bring in protagonists, cultures, traditions, and worlds that not every kid would be exposed to otherwise. You can let a kid be an expert who might otherwise not get a chance, or let a kid find a soul mate that isn't in your class. #ilachat
A4: Reading Aloud helps makes the “playing field” level by allowing all Ss common texts that you can refer back to as a class. read aloud are often off the shelves & in the hands of my Ss as they reread the book and practice comprehension strategies on their own #ILAchat
A3) When editing the second draft of an analysis or research essay, students will have a partner read aloud their essay to them. Writers benefit from hearing their ideas read back to them to spot errors in wording or syntax, and readers practice fluency. #ILAchat
A5: books can serve as therapy, identity, support, friends, escapes. Books make situations easier, more relatable, real, or less scary. It depends what the book’s purpose is for what the reader is looking for. It’s all about making connections. #ILAchat
Q5: I have a dozen picture books that aside to teach/reteach social skills to my students. Books on being kind, sharing, friendship, manners, tattling...you name it! Read alouds are great tools to promote and to expose young minds in how to survive every day life. #ILAchat
A5 #ReadAlouds "Books can make a difference in dispelling prejudice and building community: not with role models and recipes, not with noble messages, but with stories that make us imagine the lives of others.” Rochman #ILAchat
A2: Beyond inspiring the joy of words & reading, an intentionally-chosen, beautifully delivered #readaloud is an incomparable tool for thought, for opening windows in the mind, from kindergarten through college. I never tire of listening to such, even now. #ILAchat
A5: I think about when I read Malala's Magic Pencil to students and then read to them her letter at the end that talked about how words can have power and then watching Ss write their own passionate words #ilachat
A5: Because they hear how the characters are reflecting experiences they are familiar with and understand.
They also gain empathy while learning about other cultures and experiences. #ilachat
A5: when you know about your students you can quietly read loudly read books that are those window, mirrors or doors. When children see themselves or their experience in the world they know they are valued. #ILAchat
A5: Read alouds can serve both purposes. Having culturally responsive literature, students can see themselves and relate. It is also key to have them as a window into other cultures or experiences so they can learn. We want our children to have more than a single story. #ILAchat
A5: Read alouds reveal a tangible voice to students. When they hear their language in texts it validates their experiences. Students learn that though they may feel alone at times, they are not alone at all. Read alouds build empathy and understanding. #ILAchat
Late to the party but looking forward to reading through the thread! Secondary literacy consultant supporting 28 public school districts in Oakland County, Michigan. #ILAchat
Thank you. And not an opportunity to showcase a book we liked or enjoyed removed from current focus of the room. Okay--maybe now and then. Really, the read aloud should show how we make a case for read aloud's place in the room. Purposeful selection. Rehearsed sharing. #ILAChat
Q4 #ILAchat Read alouds create equitable learning environments because all of the kids in the room can enjoy the same book, read with expression, regardless of vocabulary, and no matter what the reading level is. This creates equal access to content to all students.
a4: read alouds are also a great way to bring in protagonists, cultures, traditions, and worlds that not every kid would be exposed to otherwise. You can let a kid be an expert who might otherwise not get a chance, or let a kid find a soul mate that isn't in your class. #ilachat
#ilachat A5 powerful idea of books being mirrors, windows and🚪! Sharing this w/ Ss has taken shared reading experiences to a new level, + depth to discussion, leaving readers different leaving than entered, equipped w/ a new way of thinking, feeling, and acting;
A6: There are way too many to choose from! For LGBT students, I have to say that @AdamSilvera has written some amazing books that are hard to put down. I may or may not have binged through a few of these YA novels! #ilachat
A6: Read alouds should connect us to the past, be truthful about the present, and help us in the future. A favorite author for this is @AlanGratz, who wrote one of our #GRAs. Check out some other recommendations here: https://t.co/dWbxcejK9M interested-social-justice/ #ILAchat
A5: We had read alouds spark not only ah ha moments, me too moments, and I understand moments- but also social action projects, inquiry units of study, & other subsequent acts of + citizenship #ILAChat
Read alouds are also my coteachers. They help celebrate a vision for what’s possible. My uitcase always filled with picture books to support connections: reciprocity of reading, writing and thinking. #LiteracyAndLifeLessons#ReadAlouds#ILAchat
A2.1 Read alouds can and should be embraced to all. There is no age limit required. As an adult, I listen to audio books all the time. They're enjoyable and provide entertainment. It's your opportunity to get lost in a story and forget about life. #ILAchat
A6 continued: When choosing read alouds for any group of Ss, but especially ELs, choose books from a variety of genres, that cater to specific reading strategies and, most of all, engage your readers in lifting their thinking about their world. #WindowsandMirrors#ILAchat
Hey #ilachat, here's the most important thing I ever wrote, on Essential Research (Almost) No One Knows.
With handy resources for introducing your PLN to the research on content knowledge and its role in reading comprehension!

A6: "The Invisible Boy" for all elementary and maybe middle grades...As the boy feels accepted and "seen," he becomes less invisible and gray-colored in the book and his colors begin to show. #ilachat
A6: Remember that I teach 11th graders. I still think it important to share @JackieWoodson's EACH KINDNESS (inclusion). And I think it is imperative to share @mattdelapena and @lorenlong's LOVE (in its many manifestations). THE DAY YOU BEGIN (connection/community). #ilachat
A5: It may not "click" at the time, but books should serve as windows, mirrors, and doors for Ss. Students should be able to reflect each year on their lives through literature. What did you learn about yourself/others through this week's/month's/year's RA experiences? #ilachat
A5 Read-alouds allow Ss to experience that may relate to their lives and if so there is an emotional connection or these books provide a window into the lives of others. #empathy#life#RedingMatters#ILAchat
A5: #ILAchat Ss empathize with the characters through this Ss are able to experience life experiences they may never 📖 learning to ride a 🚲 when missing part of your leg Emmanual’s Dream or 📖 having to walk to get clean 💦 in The Water Princess @peterhreynolds
A6: My students loved “The Day You Begin” by @JackieWoodson I read it with my 1st grade friends one student said, “Sometimes we feel like we are never enough, but when we celebrate others, we get that feeling back!” #ILAchat@ILAToday
For character building, I’ve read aloud excerpts from Mitch Albom’s books, like Have a Little Faith. For civics discussions, chapters from What Unites Us by Dan Rather are excellent. You might enjoy The Poet X, a novel written in verse! #ILAchat
A6: This question also gives me an opportunity to share a new picture book that is coming out soon. HANDS UP! The book takes the phrase that can be so immediately haunting and situates it into the positive expression of the two words in our day-to-day lives. Powerful! #ilachat
A5 You are right Stephanie. Teachers who read install passion in Ss to become lifelong readers. Hearing books read aloud provides a whole diff level of interaction with books. #ILAchat

a6: I loved reading Wonder aloud to think about kids we aren't always exposed to or thinking about, especially since kids can relate so well to so much of Auggie's life... #ilachat
Yes. I often find that when the topic is read aloud books, many teachers gravitate toward fictional text. We should also be curators of beautifully written nonfiction from multiple sources! #ILAChat
Go beyond and work to understand Dr. Rudine Sims-Bishop’s work on using books and texts as mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors into the diverse and dignified lives of each other. #ILAchat
Q7: What professional texts, resources, or Twitter handles would you recommend to either educators or families looking for more information about read-alouds? #ILAchat

I can attest to the power of picture books that you have shared with others on @LongIslandNY, JoEllen. Your traveling suitcase is worth its weight in gold. #ILAchat
Thank you for mentioning @MitchAlbom. I've read aloud TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE. . .cover to cover. . .for the past fifteen years (>100 times). I can slip into "Morrie voice" at any stage within the text on demand, but the last chapters are very demanding upon me emotionally. #ILAChat

A5) Read-alouds counterbalance the noise of news media and political partisanship. Students are inundated with information and need time to think and process. Read-alouds help us slow down and focus on people’s stories by humanizing complex situations. #ILAChat
Q3: Read the book first. Know your purpose. Know your learners and the atmosphere you mean to create. Be the guide on this trek, not the commander; student response & their taking the lead = empowerment. #ILAchat
Long Way Down by @JasonReynolds83 was an amazing read aloud experience with my 9th graders last year. It tied into their writing unit focused on stopping gun violence in schools. #ILAchat
Some call it ‘multicultural’ some call it ‘diverse’ but what it is IS reading to deeply know and understand the complexity and relevance of the lives, languages, religion, gender, preferences, stories, cultures, heritages etc of others. #ILAchat
For our K-3 folks, don't miss out on all of the amazing resources that the Children's Literacy Initiative @CLIUpdates provides for "intentional read aloud." https://t.co/5mO8peXOv9#ilachat
YAAAS!
Nonfiction readalouds are gangbusters for vocabulary. And engagement (Seymour Simon in early grades, anyone?).
But there is more to the #KnowledgeMatters principle, and I hope folks check out that post up there. 👆👆👆👆

A great way for districts to goal set too! If “windows” is achieved, aim for mirrors, and if that’s attained...dive into the deep work of doors! This work is never done! #ILAchat
A6: Fish in a Tree, Paper Things, Small as an Elephant, and One for the Murphys are all excellent upper elementary and middle grades #readalouds if you would like chapter books. #ilachat
A6: I know there are tons, but Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon was the 1st book I purchased when I finished my student teaching. (12 years ago) “Believe in yourself and the world will believe in you too.” 💙 #ILAchat
Q7: What professional texts, resources, or Twitter handles would you recommend to either educators or families looking for more information about read-alouds? #ILAchat
We read aloud to disrupt the traditionally ineffective lecture, teacher talk and work to amplify children’s, their lives and their stories through the richness of text. #ILAchat
Mentor and idol Shelley Harwayne said, “Children deserve the finest literature. We need to be fussy about the books we borrow or buy [and choose to read aloud] for them. #ILAchat#ReadAlouds#BeyondBookLists
#ReadAlouds also support home-school connections, create a love of reading and ensures family bonding with parents/caregivers as PARTners in supporting reading as life work. #ILAchat
Hi! Busy day in 1st grade in Aurora, IL! Joining the read aloud celebration late, but still want to chime in along with all of your wonderful ideas! #ilachat@ILAToday
I am sad that this #ILAchat is coming to an end, but am thrilled by the whiplash I’ve experienced tonight! I have SO MUCH to go back and rethink about reading aloud thanks to this amazing think-tank.

We just dug into this last year. I was exposed to a lot of great books that I don't think I would have heard about if it wasn't for this program. I appreciate and support it's overall purpose of uniting us all with one book. #ILAchat

#ilachat This has been an amazing experience! I have to say that I'm exhausted. So much to think about! Thanks for taking part @Miss_skogmo and everyone else!
I'm obsessed with @JasonReynolds83 books! I recommend When I Was the Greatest to middle school kids every day--it's a beautiful novel and every kid I've given it to loves it! #ilachat

A1: The benefits of read aloud are many, but after 33 years of reading aloud to 1st graders, I'd say the most important benefit is the community that is build around the shared enjoyment and conversation that surrounds a good book! #ILAChat@ILAToday
Angel Garrett here! K teacher from Smithville MO and absolute love of all things Literacy! I am checking in late, but can’t wait to go back and read all the great thoughts! #ilachat
