Good morning dear friends! Time to introduce yourself and tell us your name, where you're from, your role, and something NEW you have recently purchased. #NT2t
Thanks John! It's a standard part of our opening, never gave it much thought! Maybe we should highlight TweetDeck regularly at some point in our chat? #NT2t
After time out of Saturday morning chat pool, I'm cannonballing into #bookcamppd, #edugladiators, #nt2t, I'm Brian. I teach MS students English in Colorado.
Haha, congrats on being first attendee! Most trickle in after the 9:00 mark, so don't see that initial introduction. That's why I schedule my intro card for a couple minutes in! #NT2t#modtips
During today’s chat we want to focus on our continuous growth as educators and the field of education. Tell us what you, or your districts, are doing that’s new or forward-thinking in each of the topics listed. #nt2t
Hannah, former 1st grade T and your moderator today, from northern VA. Something I JUST purchased before the chat is diaper liners...what a glamorous life I live! #newmom#NT2t
I am Julie, co-founder of #NT2t. I work for higher ed and live in Missouri, USA. Recent purchase...crutches, a shower chair, and a "hip pack." Yeah, I lead an exciting life!

#NT2t
A1: A lot of math data collected via web based programs TenMarks, Prodigy and some via checklists... tried collecting reading/writing data in a binder w/ a page for each S but nvr know where I leave the binder #NT2t
Twitter got you frustrated? Head over to https://t.co/7TS1EJ9ZIs and make an #nt2t column to follow more easily! Can't promise it won't still move fast...
A1: So funny (but not really). In my role as a trainer in higher ed many do not WANT to collect data on our performance. I think they know they won't like the results. #NT2t
In theory, leading reasons include increasing scheduling flexibility (especially for juniors & seniors who will attend periods 1-7 or 2-8), decreasing transition times four days per week, fostering more inquiry & problem-/project-based learning. In practice, TBD :) #nt2t
It doesn't exactly fit into a single category. It is part presentation tool, part formative assessment tool with a lot of student engagement mixed in. :-)
Here's a video introducing @nearpodhttps://t.co/4N2q4DSdGB#nt2t
A2) I've done less with this b/c I don't know what devices & their capabilities Ss using (teach for online HS) & courses are self-paced so hard to do group work. #nt2t

A1: Hi everyone! This is Chetna from India, career coach for higher ed in #Ahlcon. Data collection is done for identifying the needs #aspirations and #careerchoices in my domain. #Nt2T
So it's more on the admin level than the professor level, and the data is related to the whole institution. I'm surprised there aren't requirements for data. #NT2t
Ha. Surprising that teachers wouldn't want to know how they are doing. They might be losing out on appreciation and valuable insights that can improve the learning experience.
Without feedback, how do they assess if their methods are working? #NT2T
Thanks Pranav. My recovery is going amazingly well. Patience is the one thing that I need to work on! The knee is good, it's the hip that is slowing things down. #NT2t
Welcome, Chetna! Great to have you with us. That is an EXCELLENT thing to collect data on! You can't help someone until you know how they want and need to be helped! #NT2t
A2: I know @SFecich is doing an amazing job teaching her PreTs about different types of immersive learning, especially AR and it's application in the classroom. #NT2t
I do agree and sometimes, you cannot help at all. True support comes from open communication and dialogue. #NT2T | Essential not just for Educators, but anyone starting a new adventure.
People are very fearful of collecting data if it means they have to reflect on their performance and change/improve their skills. Very much a "this is how we always did it" mentality. #NT2t
Interesting. Do you have a standard demographic, or is it all over the place? For example, would it be save to assume all students have a smartphone with a camera? #NT2t
A1: My teachers keep changing their teaching methods—shorter sessions, group discussions, pair work, presentations, and things like that. They collect data on what works for the students and what doesn't. That way, they can prepare better for future classes. #NT2T
They don't....or rely on the performance of their students. But, if students aren't getting good grades, they blame the students and don't look at what they are doing at all. #NT2t
The older I get (at the ripe old age of 24), the more I see that mentality in every field and every area of life I encounter. Makes me more determined to fight against it, since it seems to be our default! #NT2t
A1 New to me in 2017-18 has been collecting data collaboratively w/students vs. me doing that for them. Fits & starts, but direction merits continued pursuit in my estimation. Student opinions vary! https://t.co/gX6wuHd7KR#nt2t
They likely do but we don't do a device survey. We have rolling enrollment so Ss can start at any time. We recommend laptops/desktops but I have one S using an iPad & she's frequently running into issues. #nt2t
Is there a flexibility for teachers to try new things for an amount of time, and patience for things that don't work? I feel the biggest thing I run into when wanting to try something new is 'what if it doesn't work and we wasted that time?' #NT2t
I LOVE this! I would ask what grade you teach, but this applies for any grade! It's a lot of assessments to give, how do you have time to give a pre, mid, and post in the span of one unit? #NT2t
A3:I absolutely love Ted-Talks. There are so many wide varieties to how you can use them. Videos are something that students can remember better since it’s something that they can also use as a study tool that is available at home or on their phones I know as a student I do #nt2t
It's a risk, for sure. And it depends on the teachers as well. But unless they're willing to try something new and evaluate it, they're going to waste time with so-called proven techniques. #NT2T
A3: Oh my goodness, for myself I use so many digital resources, everything from YouTube, to podcasts, to apps. At work I introduced Diigo so we could collectively share resources. Most people were like....what??? #NT2t
I am a student in elementary education program. I collect data through formative and smatve assessments. I use this data to help differentiate my lessons, instruction, activities. #NT2t
Replying to @hturk139
I teach K-5 students and work with all staff in our building with the implementation of technology. We are a Standards-Referenced district. You choose priority targets to Data Cycle. The timelines are laid out by our district. #nt2t
A3) I don't use a textbook so we use all digital resources. I convert webpages to PDFs so Ss can annotate more easily using Kami or similar. Put vids in EDpuzzle so can provide context/explanations. Put primary sources in GDocs so Ss can annotate collaboratively. #nt2t
Love virtual field trips! It opens up the world to everyone (as long as they can connect). I love watching webcams that are set up across the globe. Everything from watching a watering hole in Africa to busy streets in London. #NT2t
Using Google Earth as a start to show distance, sometimes using street view. Discovery Education offers some virtual field trips that change, and other websites have other resources. Some are true VR, some are on a PC, 2D level. #NT2t
A3: Virtual field trips are a good way to keep the kids interested in a topic as they are able to see real life applications of classroom information. You can even skype with people and have them speak to your students. #NT2t
A4) We use Canvas for our LMS. I like how easy it is to embed things like active Padlet walls, EDpuzzle videos, PDFs, etc. so Ss don't have to go outside the course/Canvas. #nt2t
A3: Oh my goodness, for myself I use so many digital resources, everything from YouTube, to podcasts, to apps. At work I introduced Diigo so we could collectively share resources. Most people were like....what??? #NT2t
Hey #nt2t! Jumping in late. Louie from Lancaster, PA. MIddle School SS T. About to help my parents do some moving, but enough time to get in part of a Twitter chat!
So you use the data cycle on more 'standardized' or 'The Test' subjects, rather than all? The biggest enemy, time, is what I would struggle with. To give the assessments, analyze them, adapt, and still teach...how?? #NT2t
It really was awesome to be able to show my 1st graders something as simple as distance, and how far away some of them had come (many immigrant students) using Google Earth. #NT2t
Q4 One of the best things about virtual field trips is watching the students experience new things. Some of our students never go far from our little city. They also get to meet songwriters, authors, and many other types of professionals. #nt2t
Q5: Mobile Technology
What role should mobile technology play in schools? What guidelines are in place regarding use of personal devices? How do you address lack of access? #nt2t
Q4. I've only used Google Classrom and love it. I know it's not a true LMS, but it is great in doing what I need it to do! I can share out all class content and use it as our "home base." #nt2t
Yes, I love mystery Skype! I did a sort of mystery Skype with @stephwurking's class in Brazil, it was excellent! A great way to connect across cultures and see differences/similarities! #NT2t
:) No, they are very different. Canvas is an LMS while Canva is for graphic design type of stuff. I do use some Canva creations in Canvas as well as things I've made in Adobe Spark. ;) #nt2t
I would LOVE to interact with Google Classroom, as a super pro-Google user. But I understand you have to be part of it as a whole school, and essentially buy-in to the whole system. #NT2t
I love that this is something we have the opportunity to do now, it makes learning more fun and adventurous without having to go far. It might also encourage kids to see other professions they haven’t heard of before around them. #nt2t
We use the enterprise (paid) version that the university our school is affiliated with does. My kids' public school district uses Canvas as well. Think there might be a free version to explore. #nt2t
So, as a 1st grade T, it could be as simple as a short worksheet or exit slip for the mid assessment. Do you analyze every step as a team, or just post? I really do love this! #NT2t
A2) In class we are working on creating a virtual field trip for our future students! I am researching more ways to use gamification in the classroom! I feel like students will really relate to this and absorb more knowledge! #NT2t
Do you? I haven't used it but thought that anyone w/ school Google account could set one up. Imagine it is best to work w/ admin on something like that, though. #nt2t
Q5 About 5 years ago we started BYOD. 2 y later, the district now provides devices in the elem and they aren't allowed to bring their own. Allowing devices without proper training for teachers of how to use them for learning is useless. #nt2t
Yep! They can log in to EDpuzzle right in Canvas and the data is visible to me. Padlet walls are active as long as you use the embed code. They may have to scroll over if you have things going far to the right b/c size is limited on Canvas page. #nt2t
Yes, fellow Edcamper! If you're up for making the drive, there's an Edcamp at Grove City College north of Pittsburgh in April. It's definitely one of the best I've gone to, not to brag. #NT2t#edcampGCC@Edcampgcc
Geocaching is a GREAT way to teach so many skills! Have you seen the book geocahes? A book is left with a journal. You take the book/journal and another behind. Think this would be great to do at school! #NT2t
I defintely like the idea of less back and forth between pages. My students are pretty self-sufficient, but this would only be an added ease of use on Canvas. #nt2t
When mentioning Learning Space Design, is it safe to assume *never ok to assume* but - curious, is that applicable to School Gardens as well? #NT2T | That's what came to mind for me
A3: In my current lesson plans and teaching experiences I use many YouTube videos! Rather it be an educational song or read aloud! I hope to use even more digital resources in my future classroom! #NT2t
That's a challenge I run into as online T w/ Ss using diff devices, browsers, etc. We recommend using computers vs mobile devices but not all follow directions. #nt2t
We used YouTube for read alouds a LOT. It's a great way to have access to so many books that your classroom or school may not physically have! Some teachers would own a certain book for a lesson, but we could all use it for the same lesson via YouTube! #NT2t
It works really well. If you use Canvas, it's really easy to do. You just have to get the embed code and then, on the page where you want it to show up, you have to go from the Rich Text Editor to the HTML editor and paste in the HTML code where you want it. #nt2t
My lens: digital field-trip variations are supplements, rather than replacements. In a way, opening doors that might not otherwise be accessible. #nt2t
A5. My hope is that schools are moving 1:1 so that there is not much need for personal devices. I don't have a solution to lack of access/equity right now... #nt2t
Q5: Mobile Technology
What role should mobile technology play in schools? What guidelines are in place regarding use of personal devices? How do you address lack of access? #nt2t
We love having parents in this chat and want to hear your perspective! After all, we are a team with you and your child. Have you connected with @JeremyDBond yet? #NT2t
In reply to
@OkemaForever, @brianrozinsky, @hturk139, @Chetna1806, @JeremyDBond
First I would want to figure out why. Is it a motivation issue, a comprehension issue, an interest issue, or a skills issue? Depending on what I found, that would greatly affect my response! #NT2t
@SteinbrinkLaura has told me great things about @edcampstl! The awesome thing about living in this area is that there are SO MANY EDCAMPS TO CHOOSE FROM! Love it! #nt2t

Do you think the number of rural schools in a District makes a difference with funding and scores? #NT2T and how are the funds allocated, District level then dispersed by school or Administration allocation?
The districts I have interacted or worked in all have used PC. I don't know as much about using Apple for education, but I know that PC, Google, and others have many resources specifically for schools! #NT2t
#NT2T And assessing that would take another teacher with credentials in the subject or an outside agency, University, what do you think? The S is bright, TRUST ME, as a P, I know it entirely.
Q6 Just took a class on this. Vanhemert (2013) states classroom design could be attributed to a 25% impact, positive or negative, on a student’s progress over the course of an academic year. That made me realize more change needs to occur. #nt2t
It has in Indiana. In our last round of school funding from state govt, rural schools (and urban schools) really lost out b/c they are not gaining Ss but have a lot of needs. #nt2t
Exactly. And some of the virtual field trips are to impossible places, like inside an egg or to outer space! Although field trips to outer space may not be impossible much longer... #NT2t
I've heard some Ts swear that Schoology is also great! I think they all have some pretty neat applications and functionalities. It all depends on our own competence. #nt2t
And do you think that Districts that invest in Apple partly and PC partly sort of lag with updates or do you think the platform matters, rather the instruction giver? #NT2T
@hturk139 , if your students have Google, there isn't a huge system to buy into. Pretty straight forward once the ball gets rolling. You take it in bite sized pieces.
What are you currently using? #nt2t
Several years ago I was working with a school and when I walked into a classrooms kids ran up to me and told me a top musher had to withdraw because his eyeball FROZE! That lead to soooo much learning afterwards! #NT2t
Wow that is a large percentage. Classroom design should definitely be taken into account when teaching. The classroom should reflect learning and be a resource to the students throughout the year. #NT2t
Exactly. And some of the virtual field trips are to impossible places, like inside an egg or to outer space! Although field trips to outer space may not be impossible much longer... #NT2t
I've only been to a few (that I helped organize) but they were awesome. :) #nt2t If you can get to central NJ, we'd love to have you at @EdCampHAT next fall. https://t.co/stmr5P5axG

I'm not teaching right now, but we were using Office365 for us, and I don't know if there was much of an LMS for parents. I was in the lower grades, so students weren't accessing themselves, and sadly we had pretty low parent engagement. #NT2t
