Hey #5thchat#PLNedchat#ChampforKids#ShiftThis - so sad to be missing out tonight, but I’ve been feeling pretty rough today & I think some additional sleep is just what I need. I hope you all have the happiest of holidays & I’ll see y’all in 2019!
Cristina Dajero, guest moderator for #champforkids this evening. Reading specialist from Virginia Beach, VA that loves curling up with a mug of hot chocolate, under a blanket while watching Polar Express!
Hey #champforkids!! Scott from Winchester VA. I am a HS ITC and am the founder of #fcpslearn. My favorite holiday movie is Emmett Otter's Jug band Christmas
A1: As a reading specialist, I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to collaborate with K-5th grade teachers. I provide support through collaborative plannings, coaching cycles, 1-on-1 meetings, & most importantly by listening to their questions & concerns. #champforkids
A1: I provide support first by listening. I can't offer support, guidance or help without taking the time to find out what my teacher's need. #champforkids
A1 I provide support by being a good listener, collaborating on ideas, and being a cheerleader. I encourage teachers to try new tech integration ideas and support them as they do it #champforkids
A1:
One of the best ways we can provide support is by opening up true dialogue.
LISTEN. Really listen. Follow up on conversations—not just in the moment, but in days to come.
Dialogue builds trust. And trust builds true relationships. https://t.co/7Bv59Wtn8z#champforkids
A1 I do my best as a pe teacher to integrate content into my lessons that align with what students are doing in math, science, etc. I also always try to listen and provide support with students in any way possible #champforkids
A1 support comes in all forms. It’s about knowing people and their needs. A kind gesture, listening, reassurance, understanding, candy, sharing ideas #ChampForKids
It’s about identifying what people need and doing that.
A1: I am a listening ear while also providing them fun ways to process their emotions🎭, like telling it in a story with made up characters. I relate and laugh with them also. #ChampForKids
A1- I keep my WHY front and center- my littles. I look first at what they need to be successful. Sometimes that means providing support to my little, their families, or other teachers. Collaboration in an open and vulnerable way is so important. #champforkids
A1 My role as Director of Elem Ed allows me to provide support to administrators and teachers.
I also rely on them for support as we implement change across our district. #champforkids
A1: Be present and available. I have so many students who come by and check in because they know I am a safe person for them to confide in. #champforkids
A1: For Ss, I find that listening more than talking is one of the best ways to support them. For other Ts, making an effort to check in and say hi, offer a kind word and support goes a long way. #champforkids
First thing is to listen to them and be approachable. I seem to be the go to person for questions and ideas on my team and I pride myself on being that person my team members can come too. I think by being open and approachable they feel comfortable enough to ask ??#champforkids
A1: Continous check-ins whether they are in my class or not! If I see them in the hall, I'll walk alongside to check-in. If I heard of an issue, I go and check-in! #ChampForKids
A2: A desire to learn must truly come from within... Inspiring others comes when you share experiences, learn, etc. things that connect to their WHY.
#champforkids
A2: I try my best to give 100% to everyone through PD, modeled lessons with best practices, & creating materials Ts can implement in their classrooms. It's important to show others that they CAN do this on their own & provide the tools so they can learn how to. #champforkids
A1: I share articles with my staff that would be applicable to them personally, put blurps in my weekly newsletter about something I am reading and share new strategies at meetings that I have acquired. #champforkids
A1: I do my best to listen to what they have to say, encourage when necessary and to try to be the light in their day. It’s not easy everyday, but those simple things will show anyone that you care for them and are there to help. #champforkids
I find that I am often all in at school and have to remind myself when I get home... I have to refuel to give the effort and passion that my family deserve #Champforkids
A2 If you want students to learn to love learning MODEL IT! Share with them what you’re reading, listening too, anything! I always love learning about a new tool from all of you and explaining it to my students before we try it! #champforkids
A2: a desire to learn comes from Ss seeing your excitement for learning...when I am beyond excited for the project we are making it’s contagious and they become excited too! #champforkids
A2 I ask them about topics we’ve discussed, let them know when something related happens, and deviate from a task when there’s something else to learn. It’s about learning, not about tasks. #champforkids
A2: Model, model, model. A true joy for curiosity, inquiry, and learning is infectious. When it's genuine, it emanates from you. https://t.co/ulyJbBl8gN#champforkids
A2- I show a strong belief in the possibilities that lie in front of them. It is so hard to imagine ourselves as being capable of ANYthing. Sometimes having someone else show that kind of faith in you makes you hungry for more. #champforkids
A2: You cannot cultivate leadership if you do not place people in the position to lead. Once they are in that role, we need to be their biggest fan, giving constant feedback, cheering them on daily. #champforkids
Kristen from MN jumping in late!
A2: I model a love of learning to my students. I talk to them about what I'm learning and why. I also make sure they know learning doesn't have to come from a textbook #champforkids
A2: It takes time but finding out what interests Ss is what I find to be the most helpful with getting their interest within a topic and then sustaining it! #ChampForKids
A2 #champforkids I try to help create excitement, wonder, empowering opportunities. Learning comes from a desire understand the world around us. I want to make that world as accessible as possible.
A2: with conversation we discuss their strengths and how to use them, discuss strategies they could use to help, I show my passion for learning/history as a way to motivate. #champforkids
A2 It’s important for us to instill a desire to achieve rather than a desire to beat others!
The team can achieve the dream....one student at a time!#champforkids
A2 #ChampForKids
Melissa popping in for a fantastic question!!!!
The best way to encourage is to show passion and enthusiasm. My Ss all know how much I LOVE science and sharing it with them all.
Yes books are so powerful! I have almost 30 books checked out right now for holiday break! 1st year that I have had kids actually check out books. I am pumped! #ChampForKids
A2: By first reinenforcing their confidence within their learning ability. I usually do this by complimenting something I see they are good at then relate it to how they learn. #ChampForKids
A2~
~model continuous learning ~ my littles love to hear about my nights at grad school ~ they love the idea that I have homework, that I get nervous presenting and they esp love when I try new strategies in our classroom & I make mistakes 😊
#champforkids
A2 - model actions and allow others to see the positive results that occur. It’s easy to take a path of compliance. But, growth can be incredibly rewarding for everyone. #champforkids
A2: I share everything I learn with my colleagues. I feel that sharing my learning and successes from that learning encourages them to learn. As for Ss it’s all about that relationship. If you are excited about the learning they will be too. #champforkids
A3: It's important to encourage others to step up & be confident in taking leadership roles. I support by showing I'll be by their side & step back when I'm no longer needed. Leaders create more leaders, not followers. I help them through whatever crisis may arise. #champforkids
A3: Leadership in trying times is when we gain experiences that can mold our future. Nurture these opportunities through pushing outside of your comfort zone and tapping into your empathy.
#champforkids
Just popping in for a bit! A2. I encourage others by being honestly interested in their interests and needs and open and enthusiastic about sharing my own learning and passions. #champforkids
A2: Don't show them your hand. Give them materials and let them play. Don't tell them what they are supposed to learn. Make it a game or a mystery. Played with white powders all week. They've been dying to know what they are. I won't tell them until Thursday! #champforkids
A3: I continue to ask. I believe that people are up to the challenges of leadership if you ask them to take one small step. If you don't ask, you never know how they will respond. 9 out of 10 times they feel included and want to help out. #champforkids
A3: Group work is good for this... situational leadership gives the opportunity for those who might not necessarily be “leaders” the opportunity to lead... #champforkids
A3 - Start with goals that can be attainable for those willing to takes risks. Provide feedback that is relevant and meaningful. Allow for mistakes and model high expectations. #champforkids
A3: I nurture leadership opportunities by giving students a chance to be the art room leaders...be it helping me teach the lesson or pass out materials. I think it’s important to give Ss a chance to lead and taking a side seat is super empowering for us all #champforkids
A2: I try to give Ss as much voice and choice as possible- down to problem-solving and choosing how they complete some assignments. When Ss feel they have a voice and are valued, they tend to enjoy the process of learning more. #champforkids
A1: Show up. Put evertything else aside. Feelings, work, etc. Actively listen. Laugh. Ask more questions than you answer. Find out what makes their world go round and make it happen. Provide solutions when asked for help. #champforkids
A3 A few times this year I have had students have great ideas of how we could make a lesson better. I would talk to them about it and let them try it the next day, some times it goes well, and others not well but the kids love the opportunity! #champforkids
A3 as a specialist you are constantly thrown curveballs, but you have to step up with a positive attitude and push through it. We want the same from our students so it’s important to remain positive and do your best to model that to other staff and students #champforkids
A3: I always sit down and internalize. I look at where we started and how much growth we have made so far; it helps me remember that leadership is not easy obviously but I'm not alone. I then reach out to people I know can help. #ChampForKids
A3- That depends on how you define leadership. I see it as inspiring people while remaining true to your principles. I stick to my principles at all times while trating people with empathy. That empathy is what tends to inspire those around you- adults or littles. #champforkids
A3: I have Ss ask each other questions, help each other, share ideas. I asked a student today “are you using Canva?” Surprised. She said “he showed me how to use it”. I love that. #champforkids
A3- By providing those situations where leadership is necessary and having real conversations about what a quality leader does in those situations and what a good leader doesn't do in those instances. #ChampForKids
I Love when that challenging student can step up and be the leader. I think it’s great when we can find those opportunities for students who struggle or present us with challenges to find that activity or role they can be a leader at. #champforkids
A2: I start by watering my flowers first! I approach colleagues that I know are eager and open to learning new things, and together we are usually able to encourage reluctant peers to try new strategies or resources. #champforkids
A3: I started throwing complaints back on the kids. Don’t like how this went? How do we fix it? Ss like feeling empowered, and they often come up with great solutions. #champforkids
A3 I’ve always found my students who often struggle with focus and motivation take on leadership roles very well. I don’t think it’s a coincidence; we need to offer everyone a chance to shine. #champforkids
A4: Inspiring belief in others comes from authentic praise of their successes and vulnerable sharing of our own experiences including, & possible most powerful, rising from failures.
#champforkids
A4: I strive to help others see in themselves what I see in them. I help them focus on their accomplishments & reflect on obstacles in order to create a plan so they can feel successful. As long as you remain positive & keep believing, you will be unstoppable. #champforkids
A3: As @ILESPhysEd mentioned, continue with a positive attitude. When in a positive mindset, leading can be more welcomed..especially by those who bring on the challenging situation(s) #ChampForKids
A4: Give them lots of positives and feedback. Show them you think they are the best thing since sliced bread. Actions are louder than words. #champforkids
A3: Kids need to know we believe in them. Putting them in leadership positions, even if it's just running something to the office or handing something out, can go a long way in showing kids they matter. They're more willing to step up than we give them credit for #champforkids
A4 lead by example and share words of true encouragement. If you are just saying it to say it, it doesn’t mean much. Really find what motivates others and then provide encouragement and you can inspire others #champforkids
A4: I look them in the eyes and tell them what I see. I also remind people that I do not lie. What they are hearing from me is not just a bunch of "feel good nonsense"...it's the truth. #champforkids
A4 - List below
1. Be honest
2. Give authentic, positive help
3. Work with them and allow for their style of leadership and teaching
4. Never judge
5. Listen intently and welcome ideas
6. Emphasis on the process notbthe immediate results. #champforkids
#ChampForKids A4 I work very hard the first month of school to create an atmosphere that is free from judgement. Especially from me- if students feel that and unconditional support/love they will swing for the fences every time.
A4: by telling them I believe in them! Especially you kiddos who come from rough backgrounds and tough neighborhoods....I say look in my eyes, I believe in you, you are so special and are a joy to this earth, keep being you...and they soak it in like thirsty plants #champforkids
A2:
Just the same as you promote anything in your classroom, you celebrate, reward, and encourage it. Focus on celebrating what you want to see and students will show more of it.
#ChampForKids#tlap#Teachers
A4~ tell them all the time, esp during those dark moments
~we have class chants/cheers that use words praise, support, encourage
~keep it real with the littles ~trust, openness, we talk about struggles, how to overcome them
~love them unconditionally ❤️
#champforkids
A3 Trust. Put trust in people to do things that are important to them and you. That builds leadership and cultivates more leaders. When we don’t trust, we create discord #ChampForKids
A4: For my Ss I feel that this is half my job. At some point in their school lives they have struggled and are behind. I take the time to praise praise praise and celebrate the small little steps along the way! #champforkids
Building someone’s confidence allows them to believe in themselves so they can then take risks in order to overcome obstacles & achieve success #champforkids
A4- Getting others to believe in themselves starts with believing in yourself (modeling). Showing others their strengths and giving them supported room to groaw and be successful is next (scaffolding). And the best part- celebrating their success with them! #champforkids
A4: I pay attention to ideas they express, then acknowledge powerful their simple ideas are. Most laugh it off at first and think I'm "over-hyping" them but after a while it hits them that they are smarter and more powerful than they give themselves credit for. #ChampForKids
A1: As a teacher, I believe we are to provide support to our students both inside & outside our classroom.
One of our kids’ mom’s has terminal cancer. I’ve gotten together w/her past teachers & other teachers. We are collecting money to help w/her medical bills.♥️
#ChampForKids
A4- Being real with kids. A lot of "I see you" kind of conversations. For example, I have one kid who doesn't realize how amazingly brilliant they are...every day I go by and just tell them something like "you got this". Every kid is different. #ChampForKids
A4: I am ALWAYS finding those one on one times to give specific praise to students whether its after a difficult lesson or a message on their desk to start off their morning. Learn to love them, so they can love to learn. #ChampForKids
A3: Always look for the good. Always find the time and opportunity to tell people how awesome they are and to highlight their strengths. Ask for help when you need it. Recruit people based on these strengths. Stay away from negativity. #champforkids
CTA: In the new year, I will do my best to create new opportunities, grow myself & others, dare to speak up, stand up for my beliefs, and most importantly trust my instincts & be willing to let go & see what happens. I will focus on "what if this works"
#champforkids
Call to Action: My leap of faith for the upcoming year will come in creating a non-profit for my Google Innovator project (https://t.co/FyUAL4bAzX) & continuing to push myself out of my comfort zone wherever possible.
#champforkids
A4 When I show students something or ask them to figure it out, I let them be the expert who helps others. Our Growth Reflection websites also show them how far they’ve come! #champforkids
A4: Be vulnerable and transparent. Be REAL. Sometimes failures are more inspiring to others than successes. Highlight strengths, and never miss an opportunity to tell people #youarewesome#champforkids
This up coming year I want to continue to push myself. Try things that I know will positively impact my students even if it’s scary to take the jump. Keep building relationships with my students to help them grow as learners, and as always be a #champforkids
CTA: After I am done with coursework, and all the other 1 million directions I am being pulled at any given point, I want to learn to play bass guitar and DJ. I am getting close(r) to having more time...I just need to be patient. Blogging about this soon. #champforkids
A4: Look them in the eyes when you tell them you believe in them. Keep giving them chances. Encourage mistakes. Mistakes mean that they're trying! Be a broken record of encouragement #champforkids
CTA- Last year my word for the year was "Stretch" and oh boy did I reach into more! Because of that stretch I will be presenting at #FETC and #ISTE19 My word for 2019 is Empathy. I'm ready to dig into the perspectives of others. #champforkids
Thank you for joining me tonight & a special thank you to @khoggardGRT for honoring me with the last #champforkids chat of the 2018 year. Wishing you and all of your families a very happy holiday season! See you in 2019.
I’ll continue to bring positive energy to class and school. We are starting a new positive initiative which will hopefully inspire others to give back. #champforkids
CTA: Hey #ChampForKids, my leap of faith this next year is going to be going wherever I'm invited, to help spread the word that #kindnessmatters and #SEL must come first, to anyone who will listen.
Well, ya comin'?
CTA: I will be leading a social justice service project, the point of the project is to reinforce empathy in the hearts of everyone. We are trying to wipe away the effects of dehumanization mindsets when looking at social justice issues. #ChampForKids
A4: I am going to keep up my #passionprojects. They may disasterous, but after the break, we are not going to give up! I also plan on takinga n extra rehab day off a week until I can walk. That may not seem like a leap to you, but if you knew me, you'd understand. #champforkids
In 2019 I am looking to build some courses around mentoring concepts found in #theteachersjourney oh and there’s might be a big surprise ISTE #ChampForKids
CTA: I’m finally getting a blog together, and although I’ve always struggled with putting myself out there, I’m going to be brave and vulnerable. I can’t get kids to be brave if I’m not! #champforkids
CTA: I have started Acceleration based on Learning in the Fast Lane with my math instruction. My leap of faith will be to continue this practice and look forward to the results I think will come from it! @khoggardGRT Another Acceleration shout out!! #champforkids
CTA: To not let fear get in the way of me trying something new. Who am I to tell my kids it's okay to make mistakes when I'm not even comfortable in making my own. I know it won't happen by January 2nd, but I know I'll be better tomorrow than I was today. #ChampForKids
A1: It’s all about helping in anyway possible. Sometimes they need help doing something. Sometime they need a laugh. But mostly.. they just need me to listen! #champforkids
A2: I find it that if I myself show the desire... other people might want to join in too! Safety in numbers! Not to mention... no one wants to admit they don’t know anything. But if a group of people do it together... 😁 #champforkids
