Welcome to #nt2t. I'm very excited to moderate today about two hot topics--global learning and digital citizenship. Who's joining us? Tell us where you're tweeting from and your role in education or in this great big world of ours.
I'm Jeremy from Connecticut, USA. Parent, #nt2t team member, digital citizenship advocate. Recently participated in a parent focus group on the @ISTE standards being implemented in our state.
Good morning everyone! I am Julie, co-founder of #NT2t from Missouri, USA and tech trainer for higher ed. Thanks for sharing your weekend with us! #NT2t
Hi #nt2t Henry joining from the U.K. (I’m the founder of https://t.co/81xguAu3lh and ❤️ DigCit). PS while tweeting I’m dancing to Bare Necessities with my 2 kids, so sorry for typos 😉
Hey #nt2t Craig Kemp here, Head of Educational Technology at Stamford American International School in Singapore. Excited to be here again! 2 weeks in a row :)
Question 1 is posting shortly. Respond to Q1 with "A1" and your answer to the question. Respond to Q2 with "A2," etc. And remember to include the hashtag in every tweet: #nt2t
A1: To me, global learning means opening up your classroom beyond your four walls. Global could literally mean across the globe, but it also means connecting to a school/class you hadn't previously connected to. #nt2t
Here we go! First question:
Q1) @ISTE has identified "Global Learning" as one of the Top 9 Hottest Trends in Edtech in 2018: https://t.co/tRSgnLBonJ)
What does this mean for you as an educator? (Or as a citizen, or as whatever roles you assume every day.) #nt2t
Thanks, Jeremy. I love being here, even if I can't contribute too much expertise. Digital learning is quite close to me, so I'm excited for today. #nt2t

A1: Global Learning has been a “hot” topic for several years now - I genuinely don’t think that it is anything new - in fact I think is becoming normal, Everyday practice in many situations #nt2t

A1 #nt2t For me 🌎🌍🌏 learning is helping to explore what links us all, how we’re all different & promote greater awareness and understanding. While it can start in the classroom, it touches all parts of our lives 24/7
A1) For me Global Learning means to educate myself and my students about what is out there, and what is going on...not just within our small area. "We are more alike than different." #NT2T
I'm in Chicago. Use web library, blog, Twitter, to conext people, ideas in effort to fill all high poverty areas w needed youth development poograms. #nt2t
Join the #nt2t chat today to talk priorities: Global learning, digital citizenship and a taste of social justice and equity. We start the conversation at 9 a.m. Eastern U.S. time, 2 p.m. London/Ghana time, 7:30 p.m. India time. #satchat
Hey 👋🏾 Matt Murrie in🍊California. I helps Ss & Ts turn their #curiosity into energy to drive relevant, global, & sometimes digital learning with #SuVoice focus 💯🙌🏽 stoked to enjoy 😊 #nt2t with my ☕️🙏🏽
A1 On a global scale, pay attention to everything going on around the world while passing along information useful to as many people as possible wherever they are. #NT2t

A1: We are all part of humanity which makes us all part of a global society. What is different now is that we have tools to connect on a global level. We all have the opportunity to reach out & learn/grow from one another. #NT2t
To be global learning means dissolving boundaries between subjects, more of skill based transdisciplinary and intradisciplinary learning with digital skills..along with the Ss it is more of broadening of perspective and horizon for Ts #nt2t
A1: As a learner, I get to hear different perspectives. How a first world student sees an issue is different from the way a third world student sees it. Global education bridges the gap between the two and that's why it's important. #nt2t

Love to hear more on this 🤔 I don’t disagree. Can you share an example of a typical practice, activity, etc. you use keep #GlobalEd the norm instead of the trend in your class?🙏🏽 #nt2t
A1: In the classroom, I think of Global Learning as sharing experiences of others with our students and exposing our students to opportunities. Different experiences and opportunities than what exists in our area. #nt2t
Yes, student voice is a huge part of becoming a global learner. Providing a global platform for kids to communicate can lead to amazing friendships, empathy, and understanding of diverse cultures. #NT2t
In reply to
@bakshiaarti, @NigamKriti, @JeremyDBond
I like to think of global learning as "true" education in the sense that we all know our own "world" already. There's a whole other world out there. #nt2t
A1: As a learner, I get to hear different perspectives. How a first world student sees an issue is different from the way a third world student sees it. Global education bridges the gap between the two and that's why it's important. #nt2t
A2: I think we need to think in the positive when it comes to this. What doors can open? What connections can be made? What new opportunities for #stuvoice and digital leadership for our students are there? How can we get Ss to be civiclly engaged?
#nt2t
#nt2t hi Chris, yes I agree about the need for direct interaction. Disclaimer: We created https://t.co/81xguAu3lh as a free tool for schools (a safe social media for under 13s). Chat with kids the same age around 🌏🌍🌎 all verified & pre moderated 😀

A2) Helping Ss develop the ability to recognize and seek out differing points of view, empathy for others, recognition that actions/decisions experienced differently, etc. #nt2t
I don’t have a class per se but see it Everyday in my school and those I work with around the world. Simple connections with other classes, experts going beyond the teacher, real news learning, discussions above and beyond the curriculum being encouraged #nt2t
True. Talking to people from different places helps us identify the common ground on which we can thrive together. We may have differences, too and it helps to talk through them. #nt2t
Yes, talk trough them and understand why our differences make us better as a human race. Provides a chance to embrace our uniqueness and celebrate our diversity. #NT2t
A2: Connecting students to the world without efficiently, effectively and explicitly teaching digital citizenship skills is scary - we often don’t know who is on the other side of the screen #nt2t
A2) They're representing "us"--whichever country the students are from. They should represent well. And any connections over tech come with risks that students must learn to navigate (more on that later). #nt2t
#nt2t reading consistently, story telling increases international mindedness, developing every students voice and celebrating effort is global education
A1: Global Learning has been a “hot” topic for several years now - I genuinely don’t think that it is anything new - in fact I think is becoming normal, Everyday practice in many situations #nt2t
A2: transparency is critical! Teach kids how you go about connecting and what you do. The reality is that they connect and engage on social media regularly - but they need our support and mentoring #nt2t
A2 Global learning for students can expand their outlook far beyond the physical confines of the school, giving them a window to the world as it happens. #NT2t
Exactly. We can't ignore the fact that we're different. But only when we engage with each other do we realise that diversity is a motivating factor in learning. #nt2t
The United Nations Sustainable Global Development Goals #SDGS offer global learning content, collaboration & learnin opportunity. Are any of you using? #nt2t
A2: @CommonSenseEd is our go to resource. We have created a K-12 #digcit curriculum that is more than a one-off lesson and is going to be incorporated into Everyday real-life learning #nt2t
I think the + outweighs the -. It is important to open our eyes to both in order to prepare our students for what's out there. Play both sides of the fence in your lessons. Help to open them up to other opinions. Don't believe everything they see or read immediatley. #NT2T
A2: transparency is critical! Teach kids how you go about connecting and what you do. The reality is that they connect and engage on social media regularly - but they need our support and mentoring #nt2t
A2: I know when I was teaching in a small rural community, getting students beyond the stereotypes imparted from their parents was a challenge. It's important we help kids understand we are all human beings first. #NT2t
I think the + outweighs the -. It is important to open our eyes to both in order to prepare our students for what's out there. Play both sides of the fence in your lessons. Help to open them up to other opinions. Don't believe everything they see or read immediatley. #NT2T
A2: Connecting students to the world without efficiently, effectively and explicitly teaching digital citizenship skills is scary - we often don’t know who is on the other side of the screen #nt2t
No, and sometimes it surprises me when people try to stay away from acknowledging differences. We should be celebrating our differences and likeness. #NT2t
A2: Misunderstanding. We tend to judge, too soon, based on a few bad experiences we've had. For example, if I have an unpleasant argument with a foreign student, I might be unwilling to engage further. #nt2t
A3: I think that Twitter (& other social media) can provide opportunities for Ss to make connections & be a source of positivity beyond the 4 walls of their classroom/building. My Ss hosted a Twitter chat in October. They are still talking about it. https://t.co/vQ0chJLXCp#nt2t
A2: Misunderstanding. We tend to judge, too soon, based on a few bad experiences we've had. For example, if I have an unpleasant argument with a foreign student, I might be unwilling to engage further. #nt2t
A3: Twitter has been huge for me as a global learner. Before Twitter, I was pretty isolated in my small rural community. Now I am connecting with Ts everywhere and learning so much! My teaching practices are continually improving as a result. #nt2t#grateful
A3: Being connected on social media is reality for most students so using it to support and develop learning, particularly around #digcit is key. Here are 3 ways to instill a greater sense of global #digcit in your students https://t.co/Qhpf4viFP4#nt2t
A3 As youth & adults learn to search for conversations, using hashtags, they can constantly expand what & who they know. Need to build habits of dipping in regularly. #nt2t
A3) I find amazing sources of information to share w/ my Ss by being on Twitter. Also get new ideas & tools to help them collaborate in an asynchronous self-paced online environ.
Q2 #nt2t The journey is important & so is the vehicle. As an ex Police Sgt an issue could be, would the tool used in safe supervised learning env potentially cause an issue for younger Ss when they try & use it on their own at home? eg Twitter with under 13. Role of parent is key
A3) It has opened up my network to teachers around the world like never before. When I am a GL my students then become one by default! Due to being in a Juvenile Justice facility I am unable to open that up to my students while with me, but I can teach them how to explore! #NT2T
A3 Social media offers fast feedback on students' questions. Being social also lets them know they have voices on par with the greatest influencers, improving their sense of self-worth. #NT2t
A3: Social media tools are just that, tools to connect people easily. The real learning and connections come from the discussions and sharing that takes place while using these tools. Need to help kids understand how to build global relationships #NT2t
A3) Twitter is a professional learning network for everyone, and it's invaluable. Connecting with those inside and outside your field, all over the world, even prominent people, is life-changing for developing a broad education. #nt2t
Yes, and we must help kids understand that their perceptions aren't the only ones that exist; theirs are just one of many. Need to open their minds and hearts to others. #NT2t
A4: Also, my Ss created this in an effort to talk about the awesome ways Ss can harness social media in a responsible way... https://t.co/vCeIsFKhk1#nt2t
Q4) Please share any resources (lesson plans, chats, websites, names of global educators/experts, etc.) you might have to help all of us become global learners. #nt2t
Q3 #nt2t social media is crucial in this. Great tools for older Ss. As mentioned earlier, this is why we built https://t.co/81xguAu3lh as a free safe social media for under 13s, so they too can get the benefit & learn with training wheels
The parent role is indeed critical. A lot more IG and Snapchat under 13s than relatively old-people Twitter ;) But guidance and modeling, at school and at home, are important. The adults need to be connected too. #nt2t
Wow! As someone who grew up in a rural community, 💯 🙏🏽🙌🏽 this ☝🏾#WhatIf we design new strategies to help Ss deal with being taught two different things at home & school🤔
#nt2t
Maybe. But I might be less reluctant to converse with them again. Because deep inside, I'd know we were taught the same curriculum and grew up in similar societies. There's the feeling of "my-folk" and "I-know-the-same-things-they-know" mentality that's missing otherwise. #nt2t
A1. Global learning to me is raising or teaching a child that can thrive anywhere in the world. As tech is eliminating borders, today’s students should be more inter connected than ever. #Nt2t#gen2108#globallearning
This is possible for anyone who has regular Internet access. Need to create that for many. Develop habits for others. I try to motivate #mentor & #Tutor orgs to join in. #nt2t
A3: Twitter has been huge for me as a global learner. Before Twitter, I was pretty isolated in my small rural community. Now I am connecting with Ts everywhere and learning so much! My teaching practices are continually improving as a result. #nt2t#grateful
Yes, students are already on social media. So I think it's easier for teachers to nudge those social interactions towards learning rather than forcing other assignments on students. #nt2t
Q4) Please share any resources (lesson plans, chats, websites, names of global educators/experts, etc.) you might have to help all of us become global learners. #nt2t
A4: Also, my Ss created this in an effort to talk about the awesome ways Ss can harness social media in a responsible way... https://t.co/vCeIsFKhk1#nt2t
A5: We have to model "doing good" and promote "doing good". If we don't model it, promote it and encourage it, it isn't going to happen. Would you put a person in a car on a superhighway never having driven a car before? #nt2t
Agree. I try to do this with my own children, one of whom is on Twitter. We talk about why, what he wants to get out of it, how who/what he likes and RTs reflects on him, etc. #nt2t
Q4 #nt2t 😊 hope it’s ok to mention again 😊 We’ve built https://t.co/81xguAu3lh as a free resource for all the World’s classrooms & DigCit. Safe fun social media for under 13s. We’d ❤️ you to try it 😀
a3 On a different acct, I follow a teacher/ class account that had a partner class in Mexico or another Spanish-speaking country. It's a cool way to bring immersive language and technology. #nt2t
Yea, I can see that for sure. We tend to trust what we know and are hesitant about what we are less familiar with. Need to help kids understand that getting to know others/cultures reduces the fear of what they don't understand, #NT2t
A2 In this digital age, we want our learners to send out messages of positivity as they learn to navigate the internet. We want our learners to be respectful digital citizens. #nt2t
Many kids experience social media as ways to connect with the friends they already have. If adults aren't modeling how they're connecting globally, kids are missing out, too. #nt2t
A3: Social media tools are just that, tools to connect people easily. The real learning and connections come from the discussions and sharing that takes place while using these tools. Need to help kids understand how to build global relationships #NT2t
Q5) @ISTE also names Digital Citizenship as another Top 9 Hottest Topic (https://t.co/tRSgnLBonJ).
What do you think about the shift from "doing bad" to "doing good"? #nt2t
A2 Your message is clear, Craig. In my presentations, I ask teachers to the guides for students as they learn to be respectful and caring digital citizens. #nt2t
A4. I highly recommend the Microsoft Educator Network @SkypeClassroom resource >> https://t.co/BigmVoo6aI Great way to connect with other educators globally via Skype. #nt2t
A4: I highly suggest people familiarize (and use) #SDG (sustainable Development Goals: https://t.co/sN2iAztTHF )to provide a global platform for kids learning. #NT2t
A2 In this digital age, we want our learners to send out messages of positivity as they learn to navigate the internet. We want our learners to be respectful digital citizens. #nt2t
I hear my Ss talking about IG, Snapchat, Fortnite. Ps give them a book to read and read/discuss it with them. Read np/magazine articles discuss current events around the kitchen table. #nt2t That is where I acquired most of my knowledge of global events - at home.
And for those using @Seesaw, the blog is an awesome way to connect. We share ideas, learn something new and a reminder that we are part of a bigger world #NT2t
A5) One of the things I really appreciate about education focused Twitter is that it is usually quite positive and constructive. Think it serves as good model for Ss. #nt2t
A1 Global Learning is moving learning beyond classroom walls, reaching out 2 learners in different parts of world, understanding that literacy is a global need. Global learning is connecting with others as respectful digital citizens. #nt2t
We need to help parents get back on track. The "parent role" IS "critical". We can only 'guide" so much at school. It makes me so sad to think of all the time wasted on social media and all of the time wasted playing video games. Why? #nt2t
A5) I like the shift. The @digcitsummit has been a leader in moving the conversation on digital media to being a force for good. The theme of last fall's summit was actually #UseTech4Good. Students showcased their positive use of tech; it couldn't have been more inspiring. #nt2t
A5) I think that students need to learn the positives and negatives, as well as how to navigate and use those resources in order to better themselves and their future. #NT2T
A4
1. Let me connect you with Ts & Ss anywhere in the world 🌍 as well as @PeaceCorps Volunteers doing really cool 😎 things in collaborative global education🙌🏽👍🏾
2. 👀 @Belouga_ & #BelougaImpact a 100% free & fun way to learn about the world with the world
#nt2t
A5: We have to model "doing good" and promote "doing good". If we don't model it, promote it and encourage it, it isn't going to happen. Would you put a person in a car on a superhighway never having driven a car before? #nt2t
I'm so glad to hear that. I think more parents should get involved in students' social lives. Not in a creepy way, but in a more educational way. #nt2t
Q5 #nt2t superb to make the move. Fear has lead DigCit and online safety for too long, which can cause a disconnect with Ts&Ps/Ss. Ss can & do achieve great things. Social media is a vital tool for them #BeTheChange
A5 Emphasizing possibilities instead of problems is also a foundation of public relations. It's OK to mention problems as long as you offer solutions for them. It boosts credibility and gives a more positive outlook -- one with hope. #NT2t
I think so as long as they have guidance on how to respectfully navigate through social media. We cannot expect all students to inherently understand the etiquette of social learning outside their classroom without proper tutelage. #nt2t
A5: We have to model "doing good" and promote "doing good". If we don't model it, promote it and encourage it, it isn't going to happen. Would you put a person in a car on a superhighway never having driven a car before? #nt2t
A5: While I still think we need to teach children and adults how to avoid the pitfalls of being digital learners, I love the focus is shifting on the GOOD that can be accomplished by being digital learners. The positive outcomes make a huge impact in our lives #NT2t
So glad you mentioned that. The challenge for me is, how do I take advantage of these global connections to help my own community and our own schools grow? It's an important next step. #nt2t
A5: We have to model "doing good" and promote "doing good". If we don't model it, promote it and encourage it, it isn't going to happen. Would you put a person in a car on a superhighway never having driven a car before? #nt2t
Q6) How does this move towards "social justice and equity," as @ISTE's digital citizenship trend suggests, affect you in your classroom? What might you need to do differently? #nt2t
@JeremyDBond@MrsMurat Modeling is key. It is important that digital citizenship be discussed and encouraged throughout schools around the globe. Interacting with others respectfully is key. #nt2t
A5: We have to model "doing good" and promote "doing good". If we don't model it, promote it and encourage it, it isn't going to happen. Would you put a person in a car on a superhighway never having driven a car before? #nt2t
Rather than following him, I have added him to a private list (along with my kids' schools and any teachers on Twitter). That way, it is less obvious that he's my kid and I can observe without being overly intrusive. #nt2t
I'm so glad to hear that. I think more parents should get involved in students' social lives. Not in a creepy way, but in a more educational way. #nt2t
Agree Jeremy. I think it is a perfect opportunity to teach everyone (kids, parents, leaders, community members, etc) together about how to be dig citizens. This is "new" to all groups & we should learn and grow together. #NT2t
It’s very easy to be a self-contained environment - by connecting globally, you take the emphasis off “our classroom” & open options to “our world” #nt2t
A6) Try to find current issues & sources to connect w/ what we're studying in world history so it's not just all this "old stuff" that has no relevance for Ss. Also try to focus on agency, decision making, & seeing things from multiple points of view. etc. #nt2t
A6: sit down with your entire community and co-construct a suitable curriculum to support and develop the digital learners in today’s constantly changing world - don’t reinvent the wheel! Use pre-existing resources like @CommonSense & @MicrosoftEDU portal #nt2t
A5 Love this statement from edu Mali Bickley, "global learning enables Ss and Ts 2 harness power of technology 2 develop relationships w global peers while addressing complex & important global issues." I see @FoleyKev from Ireland sharing his STEAM work in positive ways. #nt2t
Love that you mentioned "generational" Henry. I can just imagine if we set the stage now for using tech for good, and teaching how to be safe, what great things future generations could accomplish. Possibilities are endless #NT2t
I'e been part of #engageMOOC for past two weeks. One speaker talked of how difficult it is for some to engage online, saying "life happens". Food, rent, etc come first. #nt2t

A5 - connecting globally is not always easy, time zones, languages, class schedules, flexibility - many unknowns which might make some hesitate - just take a deep breath & jump in #nt2t
It's so thoughtful of you to respect him that way. Sometimes children worry that other students would bully them because of their parents' approach. You're avoiding that problem so well. #NT2T
Hmm... what do we define as "wasted," tho? Perhaps they're losing out on many of the learning aspects, but there's hidden value in a lot of how kids spend their time. #nt2t
Fear is crippling but we all need to move beyond our comfort zone to engage with the great unknown. There is power in believing in digital voice. #NT2t
In reply to

A6: I think it provides a great opportunity to help break down barriers and dispel myths we hang onto about different cultures. Kids only know what they're exposed to, expand exposure and open minds. #NT2t
Totally agree, especially important for parents. The children we teach have been brought up with this technology and are taught how to use it safely & respectfully whereas many parents haven't had that luxury! #nt2t
A6: Very curious to hear thoughts when it comes to #DigCit & digital access. #WhatIf 🤔 many 🌍 Ss have an access barrier to be coming their full the digital selves? What can those with access do to help those without 🧐 #nt2t
A4: We have set up a partnership with a school in Cambodia through @teamUWS that enables our students to build genuine real life global connections to students in a less fortunate school. @teamUWS do a fantastic job in making the partnership really meaningful and authentic #NT2t
A2. Totally late on this, but I think that we can reduce many negative ramifications if we spend lots of time considering various perspectives before we connect online. #NT2Thttps://t.co/Feg4jEmMCj
A5 - connecting globally is not always easy, time zones, languages, class schedules, flexibility - many unknowns which might make some hesitate - just take a deep breath & jump in #nt2t
Agree Jeremy. Let's face it, we all have our biases and beliefs that are based on hearsay. Adults should be leading the way for kids but many times I think kids are the ones leading the way for the adults. #NT2t
#nt2t yes I agree Jeremy, I think the different learning approaches can yield different results. Gamification is an area of interest to me. Think best example is like baking a cake, all different mediums when mixed together make something awesome eg books/games/talking/social m
A6) It has changed the way I teach some things. What are the other sides of the story? How do they tell their story? It has taught me to open my world more. Find chats and educators who have great ideas! #NT2T
My son has learned a great deal from following digital animators and has even collaborated with some who have done voices for some of his videos. :) #nt2t

A6: Such an incredible opportunity to show kids that justice and equity are possible both online and offline. We tend as adults to focus solely on F2F opportunities, when our students' lived experience includes online too. #NT2t
Q6) How does this move towards "social justice and equity," as @ISTE's digital citizenship trend suggests, affect you in your classroom? What might you need to do differently? #nt2t
I am constantly looking for new information to help me understand backstories to current events, sharing these discoveries and molding them into learning experiences for my students #nt2t
I really wish schools would host #digcit nights for the whole community to learn together about how to be global citizens while learning skills of digcit. Think adults & kids should learn together. #NT2t
Very true- that's a boon to them as citizens and future leaders to bring more unity among different cultures on a team, in workplace, or even political offices. #nt2t
A6. Student activism on #GunReform following #ParklandShooting offers learning opps for educaters, parents, students & others. This is only in early stage. Hope youth apply to all #SDGs. #nt2t
Agree Jeremy. Let's face it, we all have our biases and beliefs that are based on hearsay. Adults should be leading the way for kids but many times I think kids are the ones leading the way for the adults. #NT2t
Challenge) I am constantly on the lookout for new information and stories to share with my students. By default my students learn what I am able to teach myself and share! #NT2T
Challenge: Becoming a global learner starts with an open mind. With that, all things are possible, allowing for insights into different people, cultures and alternative ways of thinking. Often there is no one right answer, but there is one best mindset. #NT2t
YES, and not just "information nights" with school resource officers or police officers running down a litany of dangers. No wonder there are still a lot of limited perspectives on the digital world. #nt2t
I really wish schools would host #digcit nights for the whole community to learn together about how to be global citizens while learning skills of digcit. Think adults & kids should learn together. #NT2t
Thanks #nt2t for an amazing chat! Great way to end a Saturday night in with my new little princess. Thank you to everyone - have a great weekend team!!!!
Yes - I also don't agree that adults *should* be leading the way. It is true that adults *should* be better, but that doesn't necessarily mean they take the lead #nt2t
Thank you so much @JeremyDBond@shyj & all the awesome participants in this afternoon’s #nt2t. Long time fan, 1st time getting involved. ❤️ the views & new contacts. Off now for a family wall & reflect on a great CPD chat
A6 My Ss are Ts. I ask them to Move beyond their comfort zone. Help Ss see the power of digital voice. Be the model and provide the opportunities to have Ss become digital citizens and connect globally through voice. #nt2t
YES! One of the schools I worked with had an edtech day during the day where students taught other students with a plan to extend this to the evening so parents could learn together.

It's time for a formal THANK YOU to everyone who participated in today's chat. But you may continue the conversation now or at any time. As you move on to whatever comes next on this day or night, we hope you have a great rest of your weekend. #nt2t
