Good evening, #WALedchat! Lauren from New York – currently on leave from teaching 6th grade English to write another book. This one is about integrating #SEL into academic classes.
A1: Wow! This is a tough one for me. I tend to hide my emotions, even from myself, and so I skip this important part of my students' learning.
I will showcase student writing and reading progress, and even use SM to broadcast their awesomeness!!
#waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
A1 We reflect a TON during first weeks, setting goals and acknowledging immediate growth! I will praise, send BGP awards home (postcards), and get everyone to wear Lancer Gear so we can win a pizza party! :) We do donut parties too! #waledchat
A1: I want my students to know, right away, that their learning matters beyond the four walls of our classroom. My plan is to start a class blog, where they interact with each other (I'll have 6th, 7th & 8th Ss) and w/ people all over the world! #waledchat
A1: I want to improve in student conferencing. Part of that I would like to spend praising all the student growth I need. Ss should think they are in trouble because they are meeting 1:1 with a T! #waledchat
A1 I'd like to celebrate & showcase my Ss & their successes not only the first few weeks of school but throughout the school year in a digital medium (that preferably doesn't require parents to sign up for anything extra). I have ideas, but what does my #PLN recommend? #waledchat
A1 This year, I plan on making celebrations a daily part of our routine. No set time...I like surprises. I already have songs, dances, sound effects. Every amazing step needs to be celebrated. I plan to bring the energy, to bring the fun, the kindness, the gratitude. #waledchat
A1 - some schools do student of the month. This allows for maybe 10 students to be recognized. I plan to do students of the week and reward them by providing them with lunch and invite their parents to join. #waledchat
A1: I plan on celebrating my students learning by celebrating their progress. I have a mickey mouse goals poster where we will set a goal as a class and add a footstep once we make progress. #waledchat
A1 Well, I don’t do anything “special” to celebrate students’ success per se - I don’t do treats or rewards (extrinsic is not my thing) but I do smiles, hugs, high fives, compliments, constructive feedback, etc. Does that count? #waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
A1 A great way to celebrate learning is to have students identify classmates to support, push, and inspire them. Here’s an article about how to do the activity: https://t.co/y2kYJvCFCc#WALedchat
A1: I plan on celebrating student success in the first few weeks by including a review "boot camp" of math skills before diving into my units. That way students gain confidence in their abilities and feel ready to learn new skills. #waledchat
A1: It's all about building those relationships! Lots of activities where we can get to know one another while celebrating the great things that make us unique! Looking forward to using @Flipgrid and @Seesaw to #celebratekindness, too! #waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
Be intentional and genuine when celebrating the students learning...get to know your students names and listen to their interest. Incorporate their interest into the learning. #bekindEDU#waledchat

#waledchat
A1 - I plan to add a celebration wall to my classroom and highlight awesome stuff my students do over the course of the year. I think this will make them feel excited and like they own the classroom. #waledchat
A1: To celebrate student success I plan to have a lunch bunch in my class. The students enjoy when they get to have lunch outside of the cafeteria and watch a movie. #waledchat
A1: Start with a positive. Hit principal pride certificates (positve phone calls home) from the get go, challenge Ss to a game of kicball, and start asking what their ideal school looks like, and a few epic green screen videos w/ @renathunderhawk#waledchat
A1: most of the kids I work with will be new to me. I plan to make a big deal about almost all things. Kids need to know what we value and need to know what we value is them. #Waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
#Waledchat - Students come into my middle school math class with so much anxiety about math, it is really disheartening. In the first few weeks, I want to establish a #growthmindset and make the Ss comfortable and get over the "I'm bad at math" curse.
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
A1: Badges for mastery of lots of basic skills and routines and Student of the Month - even for 12th grade. This year my students will be designing our curriculum with me. What's more celebratory than valuing student voice? #waledchat
A1: I am planning on starting positive referrals this at my site. Am going to ask Ts to refer Ss to me for positive learning, interactions, anything. Am also hoping to utilize @Seesaw in addition to social media to share the learning #waledchat
A1. Since developing relationships with families are also extremely important during this time, they would be invited to join in celebrations about how unique everyone is - developing that sense of community through listening. #waledchat
A1: I plan on giving students choice so that they can work at the level that is best for them... I am excited that this will help me to focus on celebrating personal growth rather than just celebrating those who get everything right away #waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
A1 Calls home, personal letters to parents, treating the Ss to their favorite things. I had a student who loved Jordans - found him a Jordan coloring book. #WaledChat

#waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
A1 It's super important to celebrate successes. We do shoutouts and high fives on the spot. Sometimes certificates and notes home depends on what the accomplishments are #waledchat
A1 Being new to the school just forming the relationships, playing at recess, learning names and passions, all of that is a start. Good News Call of the Day and celebrating my staff as well will be other focuses of mine #waledchat
A2 You can celebrate learning every class period. Our students deserve praise! Praise for taking risks, failing, getting back up and mastering the tasks set forth! #waledchat
A1: As an ITC, I have worked with admins to distribute personalized successes. Admins wanted to feature teachers with an award at the faculty meeting. I call this the TEAM award (Technology Enthusiast Award of the Month) and highlight the T and their work with tech #waledchat

#Waledchat 1-minute check ins every week where I get to know their strengths and give them positive feedback. A student success wall where they get to pin sticky notes of their weekly highlights & weekly growths
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
A1: Excited to meet all of our new, 6th Grade friends. They come in so scared and wide-eyed. Each day that they survive and find success is a reason to celebrate. We cheer, high five, shout, scream, and thank them for coming to school each day. #waledchat

A1 You can celebrate learning every class period. Our students deserve praise! Praise for taking risks, failing, getting back up and mastering the tasks set forth! #waledchat
A1: it all starts with showing them their successes. My ss come to me scared. First science class, first time in ms. By being transparent and showing them that leerning is not the final answer. But it’s a great opp to build relationship and point out successes. #Waledchat
Craig from Pa. Sorry I’m a little late.
A1 - We do meet and greets for the first couple days of school. Positive words to describe each other and barks activities to break the ice. Lots of music, decorations and a party atmosphere. #waledchat
A1: The first few weeks of school I plan on building excitement about coming to school, learning and community. I will have an acts of kindness board & celebrating each student w/ a picture and their act of kindness for EVERYthing they do to build a positive community. #waledchat
Evening, #waledchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. A1 I'm aiming to reserve closing time each block period for something new this year: congratulations/consternations/considerations from students. First of those reflections should be celebratory.
I like to display S work in my classroom. I start w/SHEG's "snapshot autobiography" as a "get to know you" lesson & hang all of them up. Always blown away by the artistic talent but also how open some Ss are. Great way to celebrate them & get to know them too. #waledchat
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A1: I love picking out VIPs, or as I call them "Favorites" each week. I post their picture and a short write-up about why they're the VIP outside my door. Sometimes it's for work, sometimes for effort, and sometimes for behavior. I also showcase work in class. #waledchat
A1: I plan to showcase points of vulnerability, creating a culture where mistakes and transparency are the norm. I take and print lots of pictures within the first week to create that family feel. #Waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?

Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat
A1 We plan on celebrating my students' learning by having them share it with my former students through @Flipgrid. Sharing and collaborating shows both groups how much they have grown and are growing. #waledchat
A1: keeping their fave candy ready to give when a lightbulb moment or “little thing” is achieved. In SpEd, the little things are really BIG things! #waledchat
A1: I do a lot of friendly competitions in the first few days of school, but ultimately, every team wins. I also give students the opportunity to earn prizes such as an emergency pass (24 hr assignment extension w/no penalty) to benefit them later in the year. #waledchat
A1: My plan is to give them multiple opportunities to shine throughout the day. I want them to be able to identify their strengths and learn how to use them! #waledchat
A1: I use a Polaroid camera to take pictures of kids with their finished product of an assignment. My kids love taking “a real picture” home to show their families. They work so hard if they know the work will be photographed/displayed! #waledchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?
#waledchat

#waledchat
A1. I love to do a good news call of the day! We celebrate everything and anything during these calls! These students are then featured on our cafe slideshow as well. #waledchat
A2 I plan on celebrating colleagues on a regular/weekly basis. I will be intentional about watching what they do, how they lead with their heart and make sure they know their work is seen/appreciated. Small surprises to show them they are special. Be kind. Always. #waledchat
A2: When I was an RA in college, I would always write notes of affirmation to my staff. I'd like to start doing that again with specific praise! #waledchat
A2 I would like to be more intentional about random notes & small gifts to celebrate fellow colleagues throughout the school year to let them know how special they are. #waledchat
That is a cool idea. I usually put up student work throughout the year, but this year I want a dedicated space that is theirs to put up what they are proud of (with appropriate limits). Students really light up when they understand that they can use tape to put up art. #waledchat
A2 - I work alongside a married couple who were my teachers in middle school. They have taught for 30+ years and played a huge role in helping me through life. This will be their last year so I plan on honoring them with a plaque with my middle school picture on it. #waledchat

Some of the best and most memorable relationships are cultivated and developed in those first couple weeks. That's why I love being their #1 fan. They are worth it! #waledchat
A1. I plan to have kida tweet out learning in celebration🎉 use @flipgrid to showcase to parents thru their digital portfolio & have student led conferences to showcase all thwir success🎉 #waledchat
A1: Getting more student involvement is something I've be racking my brain on & it connects to this question. I've been considering the addition of Ss becoming the teachers when they grasp a particular concept #waledchat
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A2 - I give a positive post it more to each person in the department. It had their name, one thing that I’m glad they do for kids, and a sticker with a great job or smile. #Waledchat
Thanks! I teach my kids about Pavlov's dog..... no point in giving out "crud" - toys and stickers - when they get lost or tossed.... intrinsic lasts. #waledchat
A1: I like to tell the kids anytime is a good time to celebrate something! Lots to celebrate and be excited about in a new year...like...new grade, new classes, new and old friends, being older, being wiser, birthdays, tooth loss, being together, etc!!! #waledchat
A1: This year I'm taking an idea from a school I used to work at. We're going to celebrate what makes us a "Genius."This helps me to learn about Ss interests, but also gets them thinking about what each other is good at. #waledchat
A2 My hands-down favorite ways to celebrate my rockstar @ecfs1878 colleagues is to learn from them, write about them, and encourage them to write about their own practice.
#WALedchat
A2: I do not have my own classroom so I definitely plan to do whatever I can to celebrate those willing to share their room with me, whether that’s helping them set up their rooms or making sure I use the room respectfully and bring in some items they might need #waledchat
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A2: I plan on celebrating my colleagues by being kind and making them little gift bags with chocolate. I appreciate that they are welcoming a 1st year teacher in and have been super welcoming. #waledchat
#waledchat A1- As a new AP and new to the district, I will be a new face for our students. I plan on trying to build relationships from day one. Hoping to be a familiar face in classrooms and celebrate the positive as I see it everywhere!
A1: I celebrate all serious attempts at learning and growth, but sometimes, I just celebrate the fact that we all showed up. For some kids, showing up is really hard. #waledchat
Especially when you have a specific reasons of how their child have done well in the first few weeks or just a simple! “I’m so thankful to be your child’s teacher this year”! #KidsDeserveIt#waledchat#bekindEDU
A2 As a principal I think it’s huge that I’m recognizing and celebrating my colleagues. Good News Call of the Day for them, random acts of kindness, encouraging notes, perhaps some surprises (don’t wanna spoil it for any that may read this) #waledchat
A1: Read a great blog post (unfortunately can’t remember where I stumbled on it) that discussed celebrating Ss successes and failures by leaving a personal message on a post-it note each night. Going to give that a try next year! #waledchat
A2: This year we have a new teacher joining us and I bought a little “welcome to our school” gift. I hope this will express how much we appreciate her joining our school. #waledchat
A1: Build relationships ASAP. Giving students the opportunity to explore passions out of the gate and celebrate through their failures. Positive contacts home are a must! #waledchat
A1: By creating an open and safe environment for students to share their thinking about math. I plan to use many open prompts where there are more than 1 right answer. #waledchat

Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A2: It's all about acknowledging them. I am constantly writing little notes to share with other colleagues when I notice something they did that I thought was awesome. Acknowledgement goes a long way. #waledchat
A2 I'm always quick to give credit where credit is due; it’s important for others to know how awesome they are, especially their contributions to advance student learning & wellbeing. I work w/ so many folks whose contributions & talents go unrecognized & underutilized #waledchat
A2: I’m so excited to volunteer in my former student teacher’s classroom! We still collaborate on curriculum and I can’t wait to pay it forward with a gift of time. #waledchat
A2: I'll be celebrating with all of my colleagues when we get back to work, whenever that is. We are in a tricky situation with contract negotiations! #waledchat
A2: I already have some things in the works. Folks have been so welcoming at my new school, and I want them to know how greatly I appreciate their warm embrace! #Waledchat
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A1 - Incorporate positive words during our Morning Meetings each day. And recognize how students have been positively using our PYP Attitudes by post sticky notes recognizing these students' actions on our Attitudes puzzle pieces. #waledchat
A2: I start every year by giving each member of the staff a welcome back gift. I am planning to complete a classroom visit with a welcome back/positive start note, for all Ts within the first 3 days of school #waledchat
A2: I was given a welcome gift when I first started at my current school. I pay it forward by giving a welcome gift to new teachers each year. #waledchat

A2: I will leave random notes in teacher's mailboxes with positive notes and chocolate and some encouragement to keep the kindness going to build morale amongst the staff. #waledchat#teacherslovechocolate
A2 - Many ways, but I cannot wait to spotlight my friend who went on her first NEH symposium this year with my help. Just hearing her stories and what she learned will be a great celebration for me. #waledchat
A2: Take a risk. Be so sincere and specific in praising someone that you feel it verges on awkward. It isn’t awkward—we just don’t ever do it. People deserve recognition when they make an impact. Blow someone away with a concentrated dose of gratitude. #waledchat
A2 My hands-down favorite ways to celebrate my rockstar @ecfs1878 colleagues are to learn from them, write about them, and encourage them to write about their own practice.
#WALedchat
A1 I will celebrate student success with lots of verbal praise and shout outs to students in the classroom. They also love seeing their work highlighted. I'd like to try some quick notes home for a few students a day too. #waledchat

A2: I am starting at a new school, so I will be intentional to look for ways to scatter kindness to others and notice the little things that may be unnoticed by others. A quick note, an inspirational quote, a smile.. all great ways to start! #waledchat
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
I'm w/Phil. Email is sure convenient, but it doesn't hold a [digital] candle to old-fashioned , handwritten notes on nice cards or fancy stationery, a cut above a sticky note. #waledchat
A2: When I was an RA in college, I would always write notes of affirmation to my staff. I'd like to start doing that again with specific praise! #waledchat
#Waledchat - A2 - I think praise should be specific. "You're great" is nice to hear, but "I really like how you did X, it really helped students get engaged in the topic."
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat

#waledchat
A3 I'm excited about a new idea to bring in community - student & community end of novel Socratic Seminars; like a book club! -and then thank with handwritten student-made cards! #waledchat
Q3: We want our students and school to be a part of a learning community. How do you/can you celebrate kindness and amazing people in your community to help include them in the school culture?
#waledchat
I think this is so important. Students need to have some ownership over the classroom. Giving them tape and letting them put up a poem, essay, photo, or art can make a big difference. #waledchat
A1: celebrate successes AND failures that lead to successes and new ideas. This year I'm trying notes of gratitude from me and from them to each other. #WALedchat
Q1: It is important to celebrate your students and their successes. How do you plan on celebrating your students’ learning in the first few weeks of school?

A2: I love leaving special notes to let others know how awesome they are! We have a stationary station at school to assist in brightening someone’s day! Also, I’ve been on a mission to send kindness packages to special people! Deliveries started this week! #waledchat
That is so cool. It just sets up a sharing economy and students are more apt to learn when they are comfortable sharing and asking questions. #waledchat
Q2: Celebrating staff has fallen by the wayside in my building which is why as a leader for our PBIS team, I want to include different ways to celebrate our staff that are random but is connected to their hardwork and dedication. #waledchat

Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A3: Make those real-life connections visible whenever possible - bringing in experts is the best way to help students truly see their future! #waledchat
A3 I think I must be here this evening looking for answers rather than providing them! I'm counting on my #PLN to share some great ideas about how they celebrate kindness & amazing people in their communities to help include them in the school culture. #waledchat
A3 As part of building a family & a community of kindness, I will challenge my students to go out in the community & find regular citizens who are making an impact. I want my Ss to celebrate those people in person, with our local newspaper. Make others feel special. #waledchat
A3: This is an area I'd like to grow in. For now, it has been thanking them for taking time to engage with our Ss and help them see the opportunities that await them after school. #waledchat
A2: I like surprising my team and others with little "happies" in their mailboxes or on their desks. I'd like to make sure to do that more often this year. Even if it might just be a note. #waledchat
A2. Welcome to our school gifts for our new teachers. I usually do something special for our BTs at our first BT support meeting. We also have a staff shout-out board and I frequently tweet about the amazing things our staff members do! #waledchat
A2.2 I also have an amazing co-teacher. I try to sneak in when he isn't paying attention and see what I can take off his plate. He is also on a social media hiatus, so most likely, he will not see this tweet #waledchat

A2: a simple note with a life saver to let them know that you appreciate them! A starburst to say “you are bursting with ⭐️ ness in the lives of the students” #WaledChat#KindnessMatters#choose2matter#bekindEDU
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A2: This year someone placed little notes inside our faculty mailboxes. They were short inspirational words of encouragement, but it made my day when I got one! #waledchat
A2: Face to face conversations. SPECIFIC statements of appreciation. Being present in conversations. Notice when things appear different and ask follow up questions. Let them know that I am genuinely happy to see them...because I am! #waledchat
Q2: To celebrate others, we must be intentional. How will you celebrate a fellow colleague at the beginning of this school year to let them know how special they are? #waledchat
A3: Talk about it! Recognize what’s going on in your community, brainstorm ways to get involved, and even invite some of the people doing great things into the classroom #waledchat
A2: I will celebrates fellow colleague at the beginning of the year by giving someone a basket full of their favs! Including gift cards, snacks & more! #waledchat
A2: We complete a list of favorite things that are kept in a binder in the front office. I work my way through the lists and secretly place a favorite snack with a kindness tag attached in staff mailboxes. #waledchat
Just take over the hallway, entry and first wall to your room. I did this as a parade of posters this year and it looked awesome and students loved sharing which one was theirs. These are 9th graders by the way. #waledchat
A3 - have a Community Champions event. Students and faculty members can write short thank you cards and assemble a gift basket for the Champions in the Community. School administration can honor these individuals in some way as well. #waledchat
A2: I’m am planning on starting a “Shout-Out” Wall in my room (professional learning room) to celebrate and amplify the great things that are happening on our campus! #Waledchat
Jumping in to the chat late because of my buddy, @MrsMonty5thGrd!!

#waledchat
A3b: Have students write letters to people that they think have shown kindness and mail them out. There is nothing more personal than a handwritten letter. #Waledchat
A3: Everyone loves recognition. From the smallest to the grandest of gestures, people like to be recognized for things that they do. My Ss will learn quickly the importance of expressing gratitude and we will do shout outs to community members on our school fb page. #waledchat
A2 I think a written note goes a long way. It is something a fellow teacher can hold onto and reread when needed. I will try to put a note or card in someone's mailbox. #waledchat
A3: Find their unique talents and share them! Identify experts in the building and let them help others. This goes not just for staff but Ss and Ps as well! #waledchat
A3: I definitely need to get better about including my community in my classroom culture. I would like to include more sharing from families. Last year, I took a small step, my class made an ABC quilt for a local Women's Shelter. This year, we'll go more into our WHY. #waledchat
A3: I'm excited to start off the year with our One Book, One School reading that will culminate in our Reading Night! Also, our Culture Wall will be starting up and input from our families as well as staff and Ss #waledchat

I haven't done that yet, but next week, I'm going to figure it out!
#waledchat
A3 One way to celebrate staff is to make sure students learn everyone’s name, not just names of teachers. My former school used to put up the photo & name of every adult that worked there. Students, teachers, and staff were expected to learn and use each other‘s names.
#WALedchat
A3 - My favorite thing is to actually call a parent during class and tell them how proud I am of their child and that it’s such a pleasure to have them in class. This makes the student and parent feel great. We do this when kids show acts of kindness or resolve. #waledchat
A3~ I’m going to be purposeful In only engaging in goodness and kindness and if that means speaking up to what is not, I intend to do so accordingly. #waledchat

A3: I 💙 inviting guests into my classroom... both in person & digitally! My Ss always send thank you notes & surprises to show our appreciation! I believe it’s so important to teach them the importance of showing gratitude! #waledchat

A4 To celebrate myself, I will keep trying to focus on finding balance. On taking the time to read, to go to the gym, to go out for drinks. The things I often cut out first to make the job realities happe, I want to be kind to my self and nourish my own sould as well. #waledchat
A2: I’m am planning on starting a “Shout-Out” Wall in my room (professional learning room) to celebrate and amplify the great things that are happening on our campus! #Waledchat

A3. I would ❤️ this year for my kids to make cards/ something for fall or packs or snowman soup for winter & walk the neighborhoods and deliver to our community & businesses to show how much we appreciate them! #waledchat
A4: I do not get manicures, I feel like I do not have the free time to do something like that, but my husband gave me a gift certificate and told me I needed to do this and take care of myself. So I guess I could try to incorporate more self-care into my life. #waledchat
A3: I would like to use @Flipgrid to bring our community members “into the classroom” and have students respond and ask questions. The community has a wealth of resources just waiting to be tapped! #waledchat

A4: To get a little personal- I lost a baby in 2010 after I told everyone I knew. But because I did tell the world, I learned how important it is to share your whole story. Can’t share the good without the bad and vice versa. Never know who it will help. #metoo#Waledchat

A4 This year, I will make it a priority to work smarter, not harder. This will allow me to still get to the gym on a regular basis and read for pleasure. I will continue my weekly chiropractor appointments and use the weekends for what they are for - personal time. #waledchat
Thanks for sharing, Lauren. Intriguing exercise for rethinking self-care seasonally and, in the process, perhaps smoothing out often rhythmic ups/downs of school calendar. #waledchat
