  • briandurgin Jul 30 @ 8:15 PM EDT

  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2 I think when it comes to Balanced Literacy, especially for those just learning how to read, it's important to give them lots of+ #MNLead
  • cburke Jul 30 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Does it incorporate other literacies too? (visual, digital, etc) I'm really asking/not being snarky; not quite my area of expertise. #mnlead
    In reply to @PrincipalFrench
  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:18 PM EDT
+strategies in how to read/figure out words they don't know, etc. Help the learn how to think and figure out. #MNLead

Q3- What would an 'unbalanced' literacy program look like? #MNLead
  • cburke Jul 30 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Readers may need specific decoding strategies, but they don't have to be separate from other content. Sticks better when integrated. #mnlead
    In reply to @_mnteacher, @briandurgin
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A3) Unbalanced literacy would be focusing too much on one area and neglecting or ignoring others. #mnlead
  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A3 One where Ts really separate reading and writing and don't encourage a love a reading to their students. #MNLead
  • _mnteacher Jul 30 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A3- Only using reading during reading time. No modeling? higher level thinking. All students forced to read same book at same level #MNLead
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:23 PM EDT

Good Evening #mnlead, I’m in MT and am late to the party… Matt Carlstrom, Deer River, Social Studies & other stuff
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A3)Unbalanced literacy it literacy ONLY being taught in Language Arts… We’re all Literacy Teachers, or should be. #mnlead
  • freshfromthe4th Jul 30 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3 the most unbalanced literacy programs are scripted ones and there are some out there scripted to the minute. #MNLead
  • lmalotte11 Jul 30 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: Unbalanced literacy=never incorporating writing and reading skills in other areas Ss need to be able to write about multi topics #mnlead
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:26 PM EDT
I've observed scripted programs that don't seem natural for teachers to implement. #mnlead
    • freshfromthe4th Jul 30 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3 the most unbalanced literacy programs are scripted ones and there are some out there scripted to the minute. #MNLead

    • freshfromthe4th Jul 30 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3 the most unbalanced literacy programs are scripted ones and there are some out there scripted to the minute. #MNLead
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3 con’d)We need to share the literacy load & that includes Ss writing in classes as well as reading. SS’s takes on the Non-Fiction #mnlead
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:28 PM EDT
If you're available, join us @ #mnlead, we're discussing balanced literacy!
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Again, Ss are not Widgets! We need that on a shirt! ;-) #mnlead
    In reply to @PrincipalFrench
  • _mnteacher Jul 30 @ 8:31 PM EDT
Q4- What PD does your school or district offer regarding literacy? #MNLead
  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:31 PM EDT
OK, I'm sorry, but this is plain crazy. #MNLead
    • freshfromthe4th Jul 30 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Me too! When I 1st started teaching we had a reading program that was scripted down to my hand movements. It was a required travesty
      In reply to @korytellers
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A4) I think the best balanced literacy pd is allowing teachers to work together, collaborate, and share ideas and practices. #mnlead
  • _mnteacher Jul 30 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A4- Looking forward to determining that when I have a position :) #MNLead
  • lmalotte11 Jul 30 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A4: I feel this is hit or miss from year to year. Typically offer workshop pd every year but not required. PD depends on needs. #mnlead
  • StefShef Jul 30 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A2-Shared rdg mini-lessons, differentiated guided rdg, writing based in response to text, word study, writers workshop, busy students! #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A4)We spend a lot of R “early outs” focusing on reading/literacy “across the curriculum” & by subject area…Need 2 increase buy in. #mnlead
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A4) Pd should include teacher teams coming together to review student work & data, discuss instructional practices & plan together. #mnlead
  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A4 Typically there is always some sort of Literacy PD at the beginning of the year and then many staff meetings have PD as well. #MNLead
  • lmalotte11 Jul 30 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Do you see that as PD or collaboration...or are those the same thing? #mnlead
    In reply to @PrincipalFrench
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Good question. Some pd involves too much talking to and at and not enough time for collaborating and sharing ideas. #mnlead
    • lmalotte11 Jul 30 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Do you see that as PD or collaboration...or are those the same thing? #mnlead
      In reply to @PrincipalFrench
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Depends on the culture of the school/district… #mnlead
    In reply to @lmalotte11, @PrincipalFrench
  • _mnteacher Jul 30 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Q5- Why do you believe a balanced literacy program is important/ valued in schools? #MNLead
  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:42 PM EDT
    Again. This is crazy. #MNLead
    • freshfromthe4th Jul 30 @ 8:41 PM EDT
I know right? My own 4th graders who had to endure it daily, had to talk me through it cuz they were so engrained in it.
      In reply to @BBaumeyer, @korytellers
  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A5 Because we want to make our students life-long learners. Being well-skilled in literacy is an important piece of that. #MNLead
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A5)I’m not usually cynical, but…I think some D’s value a balanced Lit prog in hopes that it’ll helps MCA’s #mnlead Not for Ss learning
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A5) Life isn't experienced in isolation or in discreet segments. We need to integrate skills and concepts in school. #mnlead
  • freshfromthe4th Jul 30 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A5 a balanced literacy system is one that is tailored to the needs of the Ss and integrates all aspects of literacy. #MNLead
  • _mnteacher Jul 30 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A5- Allows Ss to take control of their learning, have choice and work in ZPD. Ss introduced to reading/writing in all subjects #MNLead
  • lmalotte11 Jul 30 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A5: I think it's valued because it helps round out Ss in all aspects. Reading and writing are essential to be successful in life. #mnlead
  • korytellers Jul 30 @ 8:48 PM EDT
    Agreed. #MNLead
    • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A5)I’m not usually cynical, but…I think some D’s value a balanced Lit prog in hopes that it’ll helps MCA’s #mnlead Not for Ss learning
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A5 con’d)A balanced/shared Lit prog should have the Ss well being and growth at it’s forefront. Across Curricular areas. #mnlead
  • _mnteacher Jul 30 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Q6/CTA- What does you ideal literacy instruction look like at your level or across the curriculum? What will you change this year? #MNLead
  • lmalotte11 Jul 30 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A6: I agree with many who have said modeling is key. I want to work on better read alouds and modeling throughout all subject areas #mnlead
  • NylaNylanewton Jul 30 @ 8:52 PM EDT
@_mnteacher I'm looking for ideas for classroom book discussions and accountability. Going to try @RecapThat #MNlead
  • freshfromthe4th Jul 30 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A6 my ideal literacy instruction would not be taught in a block/period, it would intertwined through all subjects I teach each day. #MNLead
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:53 PM EDT
CTA) I'm going to increase my knowledge of balanced literacy & find ways to support teachers & students in that. #mnlead
  • _mnteacher Jul 30 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A6- time for shared reading and writing, differentiated centers, using SS/Science/Math etc. Read aloud daily. Small group learning #MNLead
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:54 PM EDT
I think this is so important. Ss need to be being “literacized” all day throughout their classes… AND without it being “special” #mnlead
    In reply to @freshfromthe4th
  • lmalotte11 Jul 30 @ 8:55 PM EDT
Have you ever tried the #globalreadaloud #mnlead

    #mnlead This is really important.
    • jessicatiara7 Jul 30 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A7: read what the Ss are reading. You learn a lot when you read YA. Value kids & what's important to Ss. #projectLITchat
  • PrincipalFrench Jul 30 @ 8:56 PM EDT
Thank you @_mnteacher for guiding and leading #mnlead tonight. You will be an amazing teacher! Some school will be lucky to have you!
  • mcarlstromDR Jul 30 @ 8:57 PM EDT
Yes! Be able to have conversation with Ss about what their reading for “fun”. Talk about what you’re reading too. Modeling is key. #mnlead
