Looks like an interesting topic for not only teachers, but all teachers. https://t.co/JrbjewcdT8
Join us for in 10 min! We chat about possible divide between private school, public school, and center-based teachers.
Now time to follow and I guess relax until comes on at 11
Bonsoir ! My name is Tristan from BC, Canada, and I teach in both public and independent schools. Great topic!

Amy here, in the Canada. Director of ECE for a private preschool-12 school.
Hey b4 things get started I'm REALLY curious how (much) you make use of tech in your classrooms
Hi ! Michelle...26 years teaching in a public school in BC, Canada.
This caught my eye. Many used 2say ece & kinder teachers baby sat. So WRONG https://t.co/duBl4z7J1x
I think networking & collaborating w/ early years teachers reminds me that they should be paid & honored WAY more
Tonight is not a tech topic. I'm sure someone would be happy to answer after the formal chat is over!
K-12 assistive technology teacher located in Prince George be Canada

Welcome, Misty. Glad you could join us!
Hi Faige! Always glad to have you at the chat!
Forgot to say I'm in Los Angeles

Hi Megan, Welcome! How’s the weather out in Oregon? I’d love to be out there!
It was just neat to see her bringing skills/passion to the kids! It was kinda surreal.
Mardelle, 29years a public school teacher.
Hello! Welcome! We love new chatters!
Thanks. Today was lovely! Chilly AM, sunny, spring-scented afternoon. Perfect.
Hi Marielle! How are you?
you will see quite a mix, but BC really has a tonne of tweeters I have noticed.
While I have a few questions to guide chat, please jump in with your own for the group as well to broaden perspectives shared.
My spring scents include defrosting cow poo.
I am thinking of changing it :) it is a new spellcheck, I am getting lots of Marielle :)
I’ll have the first question come up in just a minute. Bear with me, I’m running on fumes tonight!
Can't wait to read the article later this evening
Hi Ashlea. Glad you could make it.
Hi Mardelle! Spending lots of time with your grandson?
hahaha. We get that scent later in the year when the univ. sprays their fields w cow manure. Lovely.
Q1: What might cause teachers from different settings to form divisions with each other? What judgements might we have?
We work w/ early learning PLCs- awesome ECE teachers and administrators in various districts Glad 2 join Looking forward 2convo
Carrie here in PEI. Trying to figure out what just happened on the X-Flies!
Evidently the truth is out there.
Hello from Arkansas! Yesterday was 75 degrees, by Wed may have snow!
That's understandable! We all have days like that. We, of all people, understand running on fumes.
A1: Perceived education or lack of education is the first thing I can think of
Hi everyone, Melva, public school grade 3 teacher in northern Saskatchewan. Emotional 1st day back after last month's shooting
But they left us all hanging!!!
Can you explain more? https://t.co/q1FkoMKR33
A1: Perceived education or lack of education is the first thing I can think of
Hi Melva. Glad you are back at school even if it was emotional.
A1: I think many uni teacher training programs subtly indoctrinate against private schools -
That's crazy! At least you won't get bored with your clothes. ;)
Private school vs public school comes to mind bc certification is different
Sure- people believe teachers in a public school setting have more education that in a child care setting
and while the years going to school may be more for the public school teacher, that doesn’t mean they know more
Yes lack of teaching certificate or credential in one over the other https://t.co/LOdzo3ZKlQ
A1: Perceived education or lack of education is the first thing I can think of
Sending you big hugs. I'm sure it was intense today.
A1 assumptions that priv T don't have diversity/behavior challenges/poverty issues
A1 Misunderstandings about things like resources, admissions, etc. We need to dialogue and see our commonalities
but as a society, we put more emphasis on years of ed over all other knowledge
Is certification the only marker of a “quality” teacher? https://t.co/QaDf8wNGU4
Private school vs public school comes to mind bc certification is different
I think important to know the situation in your state/country. In Canada, priv school tchrs must be fully certified.
Growing up we were told by society that private schools were giving a better education to students.
I’d say in parts of Canada. Because I know some who are not fully certified. Each province determine that
Hello!
I am an Elementary Education student at Michigan State University! 📚
. in BC there are different requirements for T certification I believe
thanks, Meg it was good to be back, kids & parents come tomorrow afternoon, classes Wed am, community prayer walk pm
To which, I say, needs to shift… https://t.co/dlbTMyHbV5
but as a society, we put more emphasis on years of ed over all other knowledge
I think of you guys every day Melva!
Agree. Ts in NAIS for the most part are certified or close to it. Most in parochial school as well https://t.co/FMsbUeCGte
I think important to know the situation in your state/country. In Canada, priv school tchrs must be fully certified.
in JA. Private school Ts are "often" trained Ts.
A1: I think the support provided to Ts in each setting is different, as well the certification can be different but not always
What other settings might we consider? HS/ MS/ vs Elem?
Oh for sure! I think there’s not enough child. dev. in most teacher ed courses. It’s a failure to the ed. system
The responses to Q1 seem to be a lot of the things I hear in my day to day interactions with teachers from across settings.
Practicums help with hands on exposure in the classroom Need to encourage that it's more than books
I see BIG divide between teachers who work in childcare, preschools, and the like vs elementary teachers https://t.co/6ateVAp21G
What other settings might we consider? HS/ MS/ vs Elem?
A1: Ive noticed a huge divide between those who "know-it-all" and those who are willing and eager learners.
depends on what restrictions or specifications private schools look 4 when hiring, often same but all differ
A1: Not having experience in those settings and having assumptions about the environment. https://t.co/tFj9SjtfPo
Q1: What might cause teachers from different settings to form divisions with each other? What judgements might we have?
. yet a practice w/o pedagogy is hollow and aimless
A1: A1: Those who seem to thinkt hey "Know-it-all" seem threatened by those who are willing to try new/do new/ learn more.
And there’s a divide between primary, elementary, jr. and sr. high. At each level
Yes. I think that assumptions are made way to quickly without stopping to learn from/listen to others.
A1: Some divide here about elementary vs. high school. HS has more prep time weekly, more days off for exams, etc.
I know as an Elem T, we always wish the MS were more relationship builders like us.
A1: Must admit- this question is hard for me bc it lends itself to negativity.
I live in Canada but I'm from TX & most private school teachers had Masters degrees.
Yes& how opinions change when professionals become parents as well. :) A different perspective https://t.co/fIKd7zF6Cz
Practicums help with hands on exposure in the classroom Need to encourage that it's more than books
A1If only experience in one setting. Important to be open to different perspectives & POV. Inclusive & not challenging
To a point, but pedagogy can be learned/internalized a variety of ways.
As an educator what is better experience, years of schooling or years of experience interesting Q
Growing up my parents taught me that private schools were elitist and that quality education should be provided free for all
School teacher vs. Early Childhood Educator. Most ECE programs are 2 years, most teacher ed are more.
That’s a divide I didn’t even think of, Kathleen. That divide between HOW MUCH TIME teachers get to plan/collab.
the desire to share what works and best practices just wasn't there
Agree Ashley. Unfortunate, but continues to be true. . https://t.co/BIAue716mx
A1: A1: Those who seem to thinkt hey "Know-it-all" seem threatened by those who are willing to try new/do new/ learn more.
It was a desire to teach in a private school. I've supplied in a few in Canada and I don't see any difference in the education.
If we ask kids to "do" then "doing" for adults also valid in continuum of learning
Stay tuned…it’s meant to bring up our own biases, because w/out knowing biases we can’t move forward.
I don't think better, I think resources & support CAN BE seen as more accessible in private, not always though
I believe in public education. I also see how people want choice. I often feel conflicted.
Q2: How can we break down barriers between teachers at different settings? What stands in the way?
. none of the above. I'd value the engaged, +ive, generous, flexible T
When I was kindergarten age kindergarten was not provided in public schools in B.C.
. Tough when elem get 60 mins prep a week and you hear of high school Ts who get that in a day plus weeks for exams.
Ah, there’s the rub! I believe in public neighborhood schools, yet I lead a private preK. https://t.co/ojK6uDTT1n
I believe in public education. I also see how people want choice. I often feel conflicted.
A2: Primary educators in our province only get 30 min! Elem. get 60 jr/sr high get 75!
A2: Inclusive conference & pd events help A LOT.
Ooooo yes I see, thanks for clarifying! In AB you can do ECE diploma (2 years) or BEd focus on ECE (5-6 years)
Yep, that’s what I meant!
I also think it's important to realize that here in AB we share the same curriculum. Let's connect over that.
There are definitely better resources but I see many good if not better in the public system I work in.
True, and we have multiple subjects to prep/plan for, not one. I hear that a lot here too.
A2: Opportunities to collaborate. ECE-specific conferences and pro-d events to encourage all teachers of early learners.
my years in private school & my kids started in day school then public Parental involvement big difference
A1 = we cannot change what we will not acknowledge
What does this say about larger society’s value on younger learners? https://t.co/tBfhhvVTa9
. Tough when elem get 60 mins prep a week and you hear of high school Ts who get that in a day plus weeks for exams.
me too, especially when I taught my doctor's son & she was working very hard to get him into private school
Yes, that in AB we are ALL teaching same prog of studies/standards. Lots of dialogue around that is possible!
Yes. When teachers are lifelong learners they are open to learning from each other and transform the experience
In my experience behaviour problems are in the school but are "asked" to leave if gotten out of hand.
A2: Our local gives out Intervisitation grants where you can spend a 1/2 day with another teacher. You = in their shoes fo real.
I’d also like to see conferences that bring together Preschool, Elm, Middle, and HS educators. https://t.co/1dxtIDciJy
A2: Inclusive conference & pd events help A LOT.
Diving into google classroom and looking for ways to use it in my kindergarten class. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!
A2 - By visiting one another! Go. To. Another. Building. Hang out.
And we all should be able to talk about DAP and our shared ECE values/pedagogy
A2: I think what stands in the way is lack of experience. And lack of exposure. How can you relate if you don’t know?
We are in our formal chat right now. i'm sure someone will get back to you after!
my mum taught in a private kindergarten for a couple of years after my brother & I were both in school
A1: Going back to my bias, I always feel as if I need to stand up for public Ed schools! We are just as good!
The best part of teaching K is when you get a high school teachers kid in your class. Then they KNOW!
no google Ed in my country!
Agreed! To both! Lack of exposure for sure!
I agree with you. I only remember one course when I was in school on child development.
Don't think we can generalize. Schools vary across U.S. & Canada So much depends on many variable
A2 Existing systems discourage communication, hence using Twitter that transcends those physical barriers
Our country needs to do a better job supporting public education in general…it’s a matter of equity.
And that’s a shame. Because ECE is surrounded by child dev. Too many in ed don’t get it
We visited a Physics 12 class this year. First time dad had his son in his classroom. So cool!
Absolutely! they can be and they can't be, differs across many variables
We like what’s comfortable, right?
A2: participation in a PLN on Twitter such as
That all we do is play, paint, and eat snack.
It is so important to provide differentiated professional development for ECE. Targeted quality PD is essential
Wonder if NAEYC is a place to start Edcamps make some of this possible
I would have loved the opportunity to specialize in ECE. Only qualify with 4yr B.Ed as ECEA.
Absolutely! It is hard when people think of you as less valuable than a private school teacher/experience.
It’s fun to bridge that gap! It’s also good for primary teachers to know they *play* in HS too! Just looks different
. and there is that human tendency to fear the 'other'
riiiiiiight. and, "they're just so cute". I mean, they are, but I also take them seriously as learners.
I’m lucky, my BA is in early childhood, then I have a BEd. I feel like i had the best of both worlds
Interestingly, I have been told that I "don't count" bc I teach in priv school...
Love it. I read your post about it Michelle
Public Ed & private schools can both provide quality learning experiences w/professional devel/ student support
I have had the opposite feeling sometimes. Private must be superior . . .
Really? Because private school is held as "the ultimate thing" in BC.
That's all I do. Am I doing it wrong?
yes, that was often the response I got from hs teachers when I taught k
It was such a fun day! And the dad said it was his favourite day of teaching ever.
Me too. B.S. in ECE, M.Ed in Curr & Instr. k-12. I love having long view and focus
I think it would be amazing if there was more opportunity for older grades to see ECE & vise versa! Similarities should POP out
I think you need to add playdough too. That would be more complete.
You are. I took a nap today. Get on it girl!
but you do count, you & founded
I feel you can have yrs of educ but what is important is using it. So yrs of actual teaching is important.
In my neck of the woods private looked down for yrs. Its changed 4teachers/school
I have been treated like a traitor to my profession & a sellout for working in private...
when my kids were in HS, we’d compare what we did during the day. It wasn’t too different sometimes!
when my kids were in HS, we’d compare what we did during the day. It wasn’t too different sometimes!
it is certainly highly valued by your premier
That is brutal. Can't we all respect each other?
That’s very sad. No matter where you teach, you are still teaching children.
I hope my kids have the same experience when they're bigger!
Building on cultural strengths can be a wonderful capacity building experience
Why Can't We Be Friends, Why Can't We Be Friends!
Well, sometimes people are just dumb. Really.
I wish we could look at all the Ss as individuals. If kids are ready to advance, let them.
Physics especially. My kids loved the chance to “play” in that class
I think it's time that we start taking young children, their education and the planning that goes into it more seriously
Q3: What benefits can come from collaboration with teachers who teach in a different setting than you?
Science is finally validating the importance of early learning activities for kids developing brains
What is it we can say, don't associate w/people who don't bring you up
Q3: Anytime you can collaborate with others you get a fresh perspective. Rural/Urban Upper/Lower grades
Q3 SO MUCH! Look at this PLN , we cross lots of areas and all learn SO MUCH! Excellent PD I wish more colleagues of mine did it
A3 collaboration bring similarities and differences to light so that ideas can be shared to help all students
A3 I agree with Carrie! It's called being empathetic and open minded and respectful to learn from each other
A3: One thing I've learned, even when 2 ppl have the same training, we all present it differently and we can learn from that
A3 I have loved partnering up w/3rd grade buddies. We share ECE yard & that lets Ts know each other's work.
Q3 1/2: How can collaborating with teachers in different settings make you stronger professional?
Meeting w teachers w global perspective is essential! Prevents a devil of details and focuses on what's important
A3: What your "first world problem" in YOUR setting is might be someone else's dream.
A3 this speaks to a core belief of mine, "We are better together"
Once again I am agreeing with you!
When willing to collaborate with other areas you show respect for them as an educator.
Early education professionals deserve respect & support because their jobs are critical 2 kids learning foundations
Cuz we’re cool like that!
You Are All A Blessing to Your Students. And All Blessed That you have this PLN. https://t.co/Y5bJTtMP5j
That’s very sad. No matter where you teach, you are still teaching children.
Collaboration expands our learning, as educators we should be eager to continue our learning journeys to benefit us and our Ss!
A3 this question shares the same answers to the "Reasons why I use Twitter"
A3 Think of this often. Don't second guess till you walk in my shoes
Too often, "professional" conversations hover around the mundane: common core or lack therof and don't focus on actual practice
Learning by peer observation is so much more powerful than any PD.
Collaborating w/ others provides opportunities 2 build on each teachers strengths and expand capacities for all
Combined with reflection. https://t.co/dpI3Ylv0Cq
Learning by peer observation is so much more powerful than any PD.
do I dare go there? Most ECE/Primary grade teachers are women? Yep. Went there…
do I dare go there? Most ECE/Primary grade teachers are women? Yep. Went there…
Don't hate! Congratulate! Motivate! Participate!
If we want children 2 learn 2 work together, we must must model this powerful reciprocal learning & teaching exper
Can I say Together we are strong! https://t.co/5qFEHtAi4E
do I dare go there? Most ECE/Primary grade teachers are women? Yep. Went there…
Yes, but takes time to build the trust so people can feel vulnerable and non-judged when someone walks in.
How do we change the culture of feeling judged when we open classroom doors? https://t.co/qy9iWrsZF3
Yes, but takes time to build the trust so people can feel vulnerable and non-judged when someone walks in.
it's been a great chat! I love how we all collaborate and share and learn TOGETHER! So important! Spread the Love...always <3
One way is to celebrate each other's strengths and acknowledge that we all have so much to offer.
Some times the observer gets to learn as well. Think I like that focus
Children benefit greatly from the creative energy and excitement that flows when teachers work together
developing confidence in your practice! IF you have an administrator who knows whats good. Otherwise, close. :)
thanks for sharing and being a part of
Oh, I always learn something!
I was going to say the same thing. It takes confidence to stand up/out. https://t.co/SwTjO1m11l
developing confidence in your practice! IF you have an administrator who knows whats good. Otherwise, close. :)
I hate to say it, but it's a FACT that there are admins out there promoting poor practice. To do good, close it
Thank you. Much to think about. I have had many mentors who have helped me. No but I'd include you now
https://t.co/5NGeaeBHBC
Though hopefully that's less the case!! :)
So true! I’m lucky my admin “gets it”. But so many just don’t. It’s why we need more child dev in teacher training
We are going to start to wrap up tonight’s chat. If you have a blog or happy news to share, now’s the time!
That's what the Europe time ended up w earlier today- teach more pedagogy to the public...
tip for the night- If you show your class Nat’l Geographic Critter Cam video of Emperor Penguins be prepared for blood and death
We use strengths-based lens 2 look at ourselves, colleagues &kids & feel confident in collective abilities 2 grow
It’s my new soap box! If we had more educators who understood child dev, we’d have less of the other nonsense
I’m waiting for the e-mails and phone calls abt their kids’ nightmares!
thanks for sharing Carmen
And more parents. And more policy makers. And more school leaders. The list goes on and on…
Yes. Child development lens is vital 4 quality prof devel 4 teachers and administrators in ECE
had some interesting convos when the eagles fed their babies live mice on the cam
I had dentist visit & show video abt scary cavity monster. nightmare-city.
In meantime I recommend the documentary "What Happened Miss Simone?" about Nina Simone-is great! :)
Thank you everyone for the prayers, well wishes & support. It really helps. Have a great week! So lucky to have so many friends
Some personal happy moments this week. Thanks for all the fun tonight
I tried to ff through the icky parts, but things happen…
Thank you everyone for coming out to tonight’s chat. Let’s keep collaborating and connecting across settings.
