The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Bc there are a few different religions in my class, I don’t celebrate any holidays. We will talk about the different holidays, but we don’t celebrate..we have fun in other ways. #bfc530
Considering Board Policy, how do you monitor Holiday celebrations or lessons at your school?

I teach in a Catholic school system. Our focus is our Catholic faith, but we certainly explore other faiths in our learning, as students move through the school system. #bfc530
With the change of classes in middle school, we didn't have a lot of time for class parties. Instead, my team would plan a cross curricular activity for the day before break. #bfc530
Holiday celebrations ... I teach middle school so we don’t do a lot of celebrations ... it is not a lesson but the convo is not shunned ... in FabLab kids are encouraged to make gifts for family and friends. #bfc530
Good morning everyone- this was the holiday message I received from our Board this morning. Is it just me or are there nicer ways to wish your staff Happy Holidays? 🙄 #bfc530

I think it's becoming less and less about cupcakes in class and more about conversations of the specific and different tiles of our cultural mosaic.

Use Board & Administration policy as a guideline for appropriate holiday activity. Respect diverse traditions. Celebrate the season with the community within the boundaries. #bfc530
Usually a day before Christmas break I do a lesson on holidays focusing on Seinfeld clips of Festivus. Ask what features do all holidays have & should Festivus be considered a holiday. It allows students of various cultures to share family holidays too #bfc530

In the library, we still carry on as normal. The thing I have learn over the years is that the learning needs to continue. And what about the kids who don't celebrate? That needs to be considered as well. #bfc530
Hold on but it cma from your it dept right? So that's not an unsafe link. Or am I confused and it's just a joke that I don't find funny by them? #bfc530
Crew..I am looking for help. Does anyone know of any intensive intervention program for math? If so, could you shoot me a tweet or dm. Thanks! @dawnkingCCPS@MrTravisDrake#bfc530
Happy Friday everyone. Had parent-teacher conferences last night. Good turnout. Got to meet some new parents. Enjoy the day and have a great weekend. #bfc530
Honor diversity, share customs and get to know what celebrations look like for various cultures...be inclusive and celebrate each child’s beliefs 😊 👍 #bfc530

I remember last year, in the midst of a flurry of special events, one of my 1st graders came to see me as soon as she arrived and said, "Is today a special day or a normal day?" "Normal", I replied. "YAY!!!" She said. They really rely on normalcy and routine #bfc530
We should not have to hide who we are nor force the kids to hide who they are but at the same time we cannot let our excitement create an uncomfortable environment. #bfc530
Ditto Chris! As a Catholic school system we will focus on Advent, as a season of reflection, preparation, forgiveness, etc and the message of ‘Peace and Goodwill to all!’ @ChrisQuinn64#BFC530#gratitude

It came from the head of Buildings- a person I saw just the other day. So- unsure what the purpose it- but ill-timed. A demanding time of year and P/T Interviews today #bfc530
I've never heard an official policy. We're definitely mindful that not everyone celebrates Christmas. There will still be Christmas🎄 parties in classes just like there are Eid☪ parties at other times of year, etc

Have a great weekend.
Homecoming dance this evening.
#EdCampSEMass tomorrow
Sunday I leave for four days in Connecticut for a HS accreditation.

In social studies we look at the cultural history of celebrations , I might provide a small snack, but it’s nothing too crazy. Celebrating a big holiday break like Christmas, we’ll typically have a dance near the end of the day. #bfc530

We celebrate all holidays regardless of religion. My ELLs come from different parts of the world so they celebrate their traditions with the rest of the class. It is a cultural learning experience. We eat, learn new things and each S gets to share if they want to. #bfc530
I think our "celebrations" are quite minimal, but our acknowledgement more than minimal. However, we are a faculty that loves Halloween! (but participation is optional) #bfc530
Where do you go with that one? The intention was good, especially this time of the year but the way it was done, I’m sure there are other ways! Did you have any reason to think it might be insecure (given they’re doing a simulated test if the network)? #bfc530

A big difference b/w when I was in school & today is that it seemed we celebrated more, & Im not talking just holidays. There were more fun events through 8th grade. It seems in the past we were more cognizant that kids were not just learning machines #bfc530
When I was a tech specialist in a school, I did have to help educate staff on safety, best practices, and what not to click for example. Their "gotcha card" isn't a great test since it came from a legitimate school system address that you're familiar with. #bfc530
I had no reason to think it was insecure. I guess that was the point? Sad that it came in the form of a holiday message- especially since we haven't received a 'real' one yet. #bfc530

I agree. On one hand, I believe what we're doing is worthwhile for kids learning & sensitivity. On the other, kids need time to be kids! It seems to have shifted quite heavily toward mini-adults! #bfc530
And how important the different parts of the body are! As Mary Scmich once wrote in ‘Wear Sunscreen’, “Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.” See: https://t.co/jFptONhaJT#BFC530
True. On many occasions you can sense it’s suspicious when you check the email address or the grammar and punctuation or the logo and sign off, etc. The obvious solution is to filter their email address to the bin! 😇😀 Don’t let it spoil your day! #bfc530
Celebration in a school is more than just ritual. Done well, it is the glue that brings together and helps create a positive school culture for students and staff. That includes celebrating achievements in learning. #bfc530
On a slightly traffic, here’s something. I learned today from @Harvard@hgse via their new Dean @bterrylong I grew up watching this show. Amazing! #bfc530
Did you know Sesame Street was invented @HGSE? Special thanks to Joe Blatt of @HGSE_TIE and team for representing us at #HarvardInaugeration in celebration of @Harvard Pres Larry Bacow.
I usually will teach "special" lessons around Holidays. My Halloween lesson was about the science of fear and origins of monsters. I also passed out a ton of candy. #bfc530

At our public school, majority of the community is Christian. However, my math lessons are typically some funny coding sentence or graph output about Santa or snowmen. This is about as “holiday” as I get. #bfc530
