Welcome to #NVEDChat Tonight’s Topic is questions from future teachers developed by @oueducation students. Please help me in welcoming them to our grand profession!
In order to pick our questions, we used questions students asked at #edcampOKc and then two classes voted on which were most important. We will discuss the top 4. #nvedchat
Hi, senior Social Studies Education major from OU here! I’m not a teacher yet so not sure who to tag here but @ewrightson33 and @EWP_II should join! #eipt3043#nvedchat
Hi, I’m Chelsea and I’m a pre-service early childhood education student at the University of Oklahoma. Also new to twitter, so this is my first chat #nvedchat
Hello! My name is Paige and I’m an Elementary Education major at the University of Oklahoma! I would love any tips/tricks you would have wanted to know when you first started teaching ❤️ #NVEdChat#EIPT3043
A1: It may take a year or two, or even more, but my absolute favorite thing about teaching is running into former students when they are adults and in the world, just saw 4 over the weekend actually! #nvedchat
A1: As I’m not a teacher yet, I can’t tell why it’s exciting to be a teacher, but I’m excited to learn and grow as a teacher as I watch my students do the same! I can’t wait to share my passion for English with them! #NVedchat
#NVedchat Hello pre-service teachers!! I'm Prof Nikki from Eastern Iowa Community Colleges in Iowa! I taught 1st gr for 8 yrs & now teach future Ts just like you! Welcome to the best career ever!
A1 The chance to have a meaningful impact on a student’s life. My favorite thing is when they come back to visit year after year with updates! #NVEdchat
Teaching provides you the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students. I can't think of a better way to spend time. Helping provide opportunities for others to learn, grow, and experience success.#nvedchat
R1: I love figuring out how Ss learn best and allowing them to fix their passion in my class. It is more of them learning than learning my content to me. I try to find ways that engage them and fire them up! #nvedchat
A1 Hi #NVEdChat My name is Tika, and I am 23-year teaching veteran! I love watching my students learn every day. We are a family. Teaching is the best career in the world! You are molding our future. #BeTheOne#growthmindset
Teaching fulfills nearly every part of my soul. Being a part of my students' lives, helping them grow while learning alongside them is just the sweetest thing. Heaven on earth for me. #nvedchat
A1-I love working and helping others of all ages...young and old. Being an #EagleScout and having a daughter I'm super passionate about #GirlsinTech#GirlsSTEM and ensuring all students have a voice and choice in education. #NVedchat
A1: Every day is a new adventure! Some are tough, but the good that comes from them makes it worthwhile. I like to learn from my students as they work to learn from me. They don't always know it, but they ALREADY have things to teach others. #nvedchat
A1: As I’m not a teacher yet, I can’t tell why it’s exciting to be a teacher, but I’m excited to learn and grow as a teacher as I watch my students do the same! I can’t wait to share my passion for English with them! #NVedchat
A1: I love being able to see the light bulb turn on every single day with Ss! Seeing students engage in collaborative conversations w/peers is epic! #NVEDChat
R1: I also love learning also. The best thing is learning from my students. It could be something they’re passionate about, something they just learned that I didn’t know, or a new tech technique. #nvedchat
A1: Ss, Ss, and Ss. I love seeing Ss learn. I love creating awesome lessons. I love the creativity outlet I have. I love engaging with, and learning from Ss. I love that my day is never the same twice!
#NVEdchat
Hi everyone! I’m a preservice teacher who hopes to be teaching high school science, specifically chemistry. Can’t wait to hear from you all tonight! #NVEdChat
Seeing the answers from Q1 on the #NVEdchat honestly is making the stress of midterms worth it for me! Being encouraged in an undervalued profession is truly awesome to see
A1) I love teaching because I have the opportunity to make a positive impact in students lives. I am super excited to become a teacher and be able to help students in their journey of learning. #NVEDChat
It is something that you can learn, but I think most of us in this field have this intrinsic aptitude to this because we love what we are doing. There is a reason WHY we are teachers or want to teach. #NVedchat
A1: I’m not a teacher yet, but I love history and want to pass on that love for learning to my future students. Especially history. I love me some history. #eipt3043#nvedchat
Welcome to All! I 💜 Elementary Education majors because you lay the foundation for our students. Your work in the classroom IS the most pertinent for our future! #NVEdChat
I love this! I have learned in my time at OU and while observing classrooms that we can learn as much from our students as they can learn from us! #nvedchat#EIPT3043
New teachers need to embrace failure to become successful. Even veteran teachers fail. It is how you get your self back up that matters. Also admit when you dont know/ are wrong to your students. It gains massive S points and respect #NVEdchat
This is a very important question for me. One of my biggest fears is not being prepared enough for my class. How can I be best prepared for that first day? #NVEdChat
A2: I’m super nervous about all the things I won’t know going into my first year teaching. I’ve talked to many teachers and they tell me it’s like that for everyone, but I can’t help it! #NVedchat
A2 #nvedchat The Number 1 thing I find new teachers don't know or need help on is the importance of building relationships with their students. You have to know your students to build trust, to have classroom management, and to teach. Go to their games and plays.
A1- Learning. It's practically impossible to teach something without learning something new. Especially when you are challenged to teach things in a new way. #NVEDChat
Awesome! I also do a lot of outreach with Boys and Girls Clubs. Really helps you become a well rounded educator to deal with all sorts of students and support them the best you can. #NVedchat
A2 I think new teachers need to realize how easy it is to isolate themselves in their own classrooms - so important to reach out and share with other teachers! Especially positive ones! #NVEdChat
A2. It's not an easy profession. There is so much to know and learn. Accurate record keeping, building quality assessments, reviewing data to make it informative, and acting on the results to improve achievement. Reflecting on strategies, helping students self reflect.#nvedchat
You will never be prepared fully because something is going to happen that is going to throw off the best of plans. Be prepared to fly by your seat and roll with it #nvedchat
@BonanzaFire I am not yet a teacher, but I do see what you mean. While I work in classrooms in practicums I see myself worrying about failure. #nvedchat
This doesn't just apply to new teachers, but I would definitely say classroom management. Some who are 30 years in the game still struggle with the same issues, and for some it's only gotten worse. Classroom management issues = Teacher attrition. #nvedchat
R2: you DO NOT need to know it all. Be transparent. Learn with your Ss. Learn from your Ss. Learn from experienced T. Don’t be afraid to share thoughts. Also don’t be afraid to ask for help. You WONT get fired for asking for help! #nvedchat
A2: Classroom management strategies. Not every strategy works for every group of students you will work with. Build your repertoire! Also--value the lessons you'll gain from mentor & veteran Ts! #NVEDchat
Hey Chase! From experienced science teacher to future science teacher, what’s the best piece of advice you have for preparing for the first day of class? #NVEdChat
A2) The most important thing that new teachers need to know is that don’t be afraid to ask for help. First year teaching can be overwhelming, but just try your best. Try new strategies and don’t be afraid to fail. #nvedchat
I will definitely need to remember this! I don’t want my fear and nerves about being a first year teacher to keep me from being successful! #nvedchat#EIPT3043
A2-Take time for yourself new educators. Rest, Relax, & Recharge. The Ss, classrooms, & other "issues" will still be there. Don't get burnt out. Create a network of support #PLN#PLC and personal circle as well. Also, know you can always reach out to #NVedchat! #StrongerTogether
Hi Mary, I am in your #nvedchat. My husband was looking over my shoulder, and said, "That young lady is my childhood friend's daughter." My husband is from Fort Morgan, CO. :)
A3: Ask what supports the school will have for new teachers, what kinds of things teachers do together outside of school, these will tell you a lot about the school's culture #nvedchat
I love the middle schoolers right now probably because my daughter is in that group. Love elementary and high school as well. Just so different so it makes it interesting...Every day is a new day to learn from them and vice versa. #NVedchat
A2: hard to generalize. I have had a range of mentee Ts. Some needed management support, some curriculum support, etc... If had to pick 1 I would say they ask about the school expectations for Ts most frequently. When are grades due, where do I scan in books, etc...
#NVEdchat
Hey #nvedchat, running errands took way longer than I thought tonight. Was looking forward to this chat too, dammit. Gonna have to check the # when I get home.
R3: How do you see me helping to meet the vision of your school? Btw—look up info on your school you interview for. YES, you want a job but why are you here. Remember you are being interviewed, but you are interviewing them also. Is this a place I want to work? #nvedchat
A1: Teaching is my life! I see my self in this role both within classroom walls as well as outside the classroom. I am passionate about leaving this world better than it was and what better way than to sharing knowledge #NVEdChat
A2) The most important thing that new teachers need to know is that don’t be afraid to ask for help. First year teaching can be overwhelming, but just try your best. Try new strategies and don’t be afraid to fail. #nvedchat
A3 one question I asked was “Why will I love teaching here?” Another good one is “What programs and initiatives are YOU most excited about at your school?” #NVEdChat
Great question..
Also, I would encourage people to look around on their tour.. are teachers interacting, are the hallways clear and clean? Sign of a healthy school. #nvedchat Your observations can be most important.
Know your content, but concentrate on getting to know your students. Be curious, consistent, and welcoming. Let them know you are in the profession for them. You are working together towards a common goal. #nvedchat
This is a very important question for me. One of my biggest fears is not being prepared enough for my class. How can I be best prepared for that first day? #NVEdChat
You will never be prepared fully because something is going to happen that is going to throw off the best of plans. Be prepared to fly by your seat and roll with it #nvedchat
A3. I bet I have interviewed hundreds of teachers ... let's see ... what are some of the proudest accomplishments of the students who attend this school? #NVedchat
Glad to see that asking for help, building relationships in the classroom, and not being afraid to fail are the answers for Q2 in #NVEdchat they seem small but will be a huge help once I’m in a classroom
What type of professional learning and mentoring is available to you? So important to know that the district/school is there supporting you to be successful! #nvedchat
Many new teachers suffer a bit of culture shock when the school/district that hires them has a different demographic than their training. The reality that each classroom/school/district is different and changes each year can frustrate people who aren't ready. #nvedchat
Have clear expectations and don’t worry about wasting time to go over them again and again - you will more time if you let behavior slide. Be consistent but loving - relationships go along way! #NVEdChat
a3) what extra duties do most new teachers do..I was told.. Poms, Cheerleaders or Prom.. Hello Prom Advisor.. and there were no major injuries in cheer that year! #nvedchat
A3: Always ask about the Ss and the overall culture of the school. But if you have a question ask it. Don't worry about asking a question for the sake of asking a question. Just be you. You got this!
#NVEdchat
A2: Teachers need to know and be willing to show that failure is not only okay, but a critical part of learning when approached correctly. Model grit! #NVEdchat
A3) Ask about the school culture, but also the supports that in place for new teachers. For example, mentor programs and professional development. #nvedchat
All teachers must remember that classroom management is about being FIRM, FAIR, and CONSISTENT. If you are those 3 things, you will be RESPECTED. Students (and even adults) need and WANT boundaries. #nvedchat
And for Oklahoma teachers, even though you worry you won't find a job, there is a teacher shortage and you are in the driver's seat! Make sure its a good fit! #nvedchat
A3. Ask what opportunities are available to continue to learn and grow within the school. Ask about the ability to collaborate with others. Ask why students and teachers love being in their school/district. #nvedchat
I love this! I never took a tour when I interviewed - but, it would have been a great way to get a feel for the school! If they don’t offer it, I would ask! #NVEdChat
If you like that.. then volunteer while in college.. get experience and learn about safety etc.. It will make you super marketable as a language arts person. #nvedchat
A3. Ask about the families of the students and the community. Ask about long term goals and if pizza is offered to teachers on Fridays <-- threw that one in to see if anyone is paying attention :-) #NVedchat
A2 just knowing where to get help, resources. One of the nicest things a teacher did for me first year was just send for extra copies if she was doing an assignment, then she would offer it to me “just in case I needed something” @DrTerriC#nvedchat
A3-How do I grow, learn, become a better professional? What is the PD plan for educators? What options do I have? etc... #NVedchat#edcuation = #learning for all!
Put together a resume and achievements folder and drop it off at the school after applying, ask to speak to the principal and tell them that you look forward to speaking with them further #nvedchat
It's great to let them know you want to be involved! Do you have a digital portfolio to highlight you?! (and your teaching/coaching prowess!?) #nvedchat
Remember that rules are for the 3-7% of students that need it. It isn’t a “gotcha” game either. Some Ss need those boundaries and it’s part of educating Ss. #NVedchat
All teachers must remember that classroom management is about being FIRM, FAIR, and CONSISTENT. If you are those 3 things, you will be RESPECTED. Students (and even adults) need and WANT boundaries. #nvedchat
Be consistent. Be fair. Listen, think, respond. Keep parents informed. Treat students as you would want to be treated in the same situation. Be respectful. #nvedchat
A2 I tell all my students to cleanup their social media. Belong to FB groups related to education. Involve yourself in Twitter chats and do some PD in PJs via webinars. Employers will “Google You” so have a positive online presence #NVEdChat
A4: I try and talk to teachers to get advice and see what works for them and what doesn’t. Many of my family members are in education, so I have them for support. I’d love any other advice any of you can give! #NVedchat
A3. Ask what opportunities are available to continue to learn and grow within the school. Ask about the ability to collaborate with others. Ask why students and teachers love being in their school/district. #nvedchat
CREATE YOUR DIGITAL PORTFOLIO!! So awesome to have a website that highlights your teaching strategies, maybe some lesson plans you've created/ photos of student teaching.... Let them SEE YOU! #nvedchat
"What brought you to (school)?"/"Why are you still at (school)?" Great opportunity to get some intel on your admin & the bldg, culture. Also buys you some time. #nvedchat
A4. Volunteer - this fraternity group came for a week and set up the leveled book room! Talk about a HUGE task! There are SO many tasks a school needs help with. #NVedchat
A3) One thing I really want in a future school is a supportive staff community that is one that that is really important for me in considering a school. #nvedchat
I actually LOVE mock interviews.. I find it fun... I also will discuss using the Be Employed App which gives you practice interview questions on the last day of class. #nvedchat
R4: figure out where you want to be. Do research on schools. Work on your non-negotiables. Learn SMS, LMS, and learn how to use @Google in your classroom. #NVedchat
A3: I ask (and look for interviewees to ask) what opportunities exist to contribute to the school outside the classroom or take on leadership roles. How does the school encourage parental and community involvement? #NVEdchat
A4 practicing in the classroom with students whenever possible! I’d volunteer in several different classes to see different teaching styles and get ideas #NVEdChat
A4: familiarize yourself with state & federal ed policy. Meet your legislators, supplement your coursework as needed with learning about cultural competence, trauma informed teaching. Don't rely solely on prep programs. #NVEdChat
Where I work depends on two crucial components - freedom in the classroom & collaboration. My question would be, "Teacher autonomy & collaboration are crucial in terms of innovation, creativity, and student learning gains. How do you balance both in your district?" #nvedchat
@mrrogers311 We talked about students making their own expectations in one of my classes! How do you keep students on track when they are making their own expectations? #nvedchat
A4: Make yourself marketable. Earn extra endorsements, VOLUNTEER w/Ss who are in your desired teaching age group, attend conferences, READ READ READ & stay in the "know" w/education in your county, state, nation & world. #nvedchat
A3 great question, what support is offered through school, department, is it a collaborative environment, get some examples, do they offer #Pd or will they send you to #professionaldevelopment#nvedchat
I had already been "selected" by my student teaching school so my CCSD interview was a formality, but I used this question in both of my other interviews. #nvedchat
A4) Ask other teachers for advice. Also look at developing your teachings skills by becoming a Google Certified Educator. Technology is a great resource! #nvedchat
Thank you for participating in #NVEdChat - please remember that teacher education students & new teachers have lots of questions and may be afraid to ask! Make sure to engage them and let the know you are happy to help them become amazing teachers!!
Thank you @DrTerriC@oueducation for moderating tonight's #NVedchat on New Teacher Questions! Don't forget to follow all the great tweeters from tonight. See you next week!
A4. Find as many community meetings as you can. Add them to your calendar. Try for one each day. Then, before leaving, set an "action item" what will you do in the future that stems from attending? BE INVOLVED! Care ... #NVedchat
A4. Join organizations such as NSTA, NCTM, NCEC, NCSS, ISTE they have great rates for students. Alternatively, at least follow them on Twitter. You will a lot #NVEdChat
A4: Put in as much time in the classroom as possible. Substitute teach, long term-sub, teacher aide, or volunteer at a school you think might have an opening. Pass out business cards to sub at the school. Actual expierence in the building is a huge plus!
#NVEdchat
A4) Ask other teachers for advice. Also look at developing your teaching skills by becoming a Google Certified Educator. Technology is a great resource! #nvedchat
A4: I am currently am trying to get in as many different classroom experiences as I can. I hope to get a better idea of what works in different classrooms and different environments before I work full-time job in one. #NVEdChat
A4. Be able to articulate why you became a teacher. Be able to have a conversation about words like assessment, continuous improvement, feedback and reflection. Have an idea about how to gather, evaluate, and respond to classroom data. #nvedchat
You are not their friends. You do not need them to see you as the “cool” teacher. Kids want structure and want to learn. They will respect you and learn more from you when you have set procedures and expectations that are fair and consistent for everyone. #NVEdChat
Q4) I feel as if my field experiences and practicums have better prepared me for my future jobs. I try and get as much out of them as possible and stay connected with the educators. #nvedchat
#NVEDchat Great chat tonight! Good luck to you all & make sure to continue to network with as many educators from across the country as possible. It's been a pleasure! Awesome questions--keep them coming!
For all of you soon to be new teachers in #nvedchat tonight, good luck finishing up and going after those first jobs! If you want some light educational reading, check out my blog at https://t.co/6DoiC7WMic
Thank you all for allowing me to participate in my first twitter chat. As a future educator it is great to see so many teachers that are enthusiastic about their jobs. #nvedchat
I know it is so important to stick with the students until they have that aha moment- do you have any tips for what to do when the aha moment takes a little longer for some students? #NVedchat#EIPT3043
What a great question.. If you can plan to have some work time for all students, it will allow you to go back to the ones that struggle.. Some schools require reading apps, and that can be circle back time. #nvedchat
Find multiple ways to get that Ss the information they need. When they own their learning, they "get it". It's not about giving the same info louder and slower or more of the same! :) #nvedchat

Do your research on a school and it’s needs. Ask what a school’s philosophies are in regards to teacher and student expectations. Ask what supports are available for new teachers. Ask what challenges the school and the administration have faced at that school.
#nvedchat A3 New teachers should ask what kind of professional development is offered to new teachers. They should also ask if they will be assigned a mentor or an instructional coach.
Know what is essential and what is nice to know. The essential needs to be understood. Have students collaborate. Let them reflect on what they need to better understand. Reflect on the strategies you use that are most effective. Not easy. It's a puzzle. #nvedchat

More on subbing: if you’re focused on Elementary, try High School, and vice versa. Sub at Middle Schools as much as you can, because if you can survive there, you can survive anywhere! #nvedchat
It is a powerful dance.. Clear with the rules but still show you care. Sometimes you will mess it up, but as a whole students should see who you are! #nvedchat
#nvedchat A4 I would suggest observing master teachers as much as possible. I would read #kidsdeserveit and books by @mrronclark_. I would collaborate with a master teacher.

Great discussion tonight @DrTerriC. Thanks for joining us preservice teachers. Come join on Wednesday night #IDedchat at 10:00 PM EST and Thursday night for #INeLearn at 9:00 PM EST #NVEdChat
This is the thing that excites me most about teaching! I’m glad you mentioned this! The classes I remember most from elementary school are the ones with the teachers who took the time to know me. #NVedchat#EIPT3043
#nvedchat It is important for new teachers to share with their team, instructional coach when they don't know what they don't know. Sometimes, you can't pinpoint what you don't know, just share you know you need help, but are sure what. We can help you!
#nvedchat to all the future teachers, thank you! Thank you so much! Remember procedures and routines will help you so much! Also, don’t be boring! Just like you, kids hate to be bored and will act up! Hell I did when I was that age!
Eyes wide open. Believe that every class WILL BE different and welcome opportunities to use some of the diversity in your classroom. ALWAYS embrace opportunities to learn about the people and world around you.
