Kirk here from the Chicago Northshore. Teacher of 6-8th grade double accelerated math in a flipped classroom.
Joey from Milwaukee, WI. 7th grade social social studies teacher.
Hi,
I am a Grade 4/5 Student Teacher in Surrey.
First question coming up in less than a minute for
I am a grade 6/7 generalist teacher from Surrey, BC Canada
Q1. What is differentiated instruction to you?
Welcome!! Awesome to see student teachers jumping in to tonight.
A1 Ts adapting content and lessons to ensure all Ss have mastery
A1. To me it is about personalizing instruction to meet the varying needs and strengths of the students in your classroom.
so true... gone are the days of one size fits all educational experiences.
A1. I also like to listen to suggestions my students have. They often think of things that never crossed my mind.
A1: Giving students autonomy in making choices in their class regarding their own education.
strengths is key, will serve as motivation to complete task
A1. I like to call it guided autonomy. free to make your choice within the criteria established by class & I.
Bronwen, grade 7 teacher in Surrey, BC joining in
A1. realized that in order to gain engagement in the learning I needed to be open ridding myself same same for everyone
A1). tailoring your instructions, content and creating multiple paths for S to share their learnings
Welcome... quesiton 2 is about to come up!
A1 For me it's allowing all students to be successful and supporting them along the way
A1. Product and pathway don't matter if all students still meet the learning target
Q2. How does a differentiated classroom look? How does it feel for the teacher? student?
here here on that... more than one road to enjoy the journey on
"tailoring" What a perfect way to describe it
Yes... sometimes we need to realize as well that the learning targets for some might be slightly different for others
A2 Small groups/individual > whole class. Lots of conferring and check-ins
A1. It feels like more than just choices in learning... the environment is also conducive to choice too. Seating... policies...
A2 Seeing kids who are motivated and successful feels so rewarding
A2 On work days I create a Google Form that Ss submit to share their progress with me-Adjust next day plans based on results
and students collaborating to clarify their goals and learning
A2. Designing lessons to build in feedback for learning in multiple learning environments. lots of purposeful chatter
What a great learning environment...love the tables. Are those engaged kids or what?!?
Welcome!! Personal goals is so important in differentiated instruction.
What a great idea. Do they check in during the day? Or when reflecting at night?
So proud of my 7th graders. They start class without me, discussing the content from the video they watched https://t.co/7IOEEG0rk6
Personal goals and regularly check-ins
Exit Ticket. I give last five minutes to complete and then remaining time is free time as a reward for good work
Q3. Share some of the ways you differentiate learning in your classroom.
Give kids guidance, stand back, & watch their imprint on classroom. Giving up control gains trust. https://t.co/ccWXpMbEp6
Haven't taught a lecture in 4 years! I give kids the control in my flipped classroom. https://t.co/foiEXXRgPi
Give kids guidance, stand back, & watch their imprint on classroom. Giving up control gains trust. https://t.co/ccWXpMbEp6
Welcome! We are on question 3 now.
Perfect formative assessment in action :)
Thanks! I am lucky to have amazing students!
amazing students and an amazing classroom!!
A3 Our lit and math sections are 60 min instruction, the 30 min focus time. Ss work in small groups based on individual needs (1/2)
A3 no new instruction in the 30 min block. Ss work with teacher and other support staff to reinforce skills
Have Lots of opportunities to be the guide on the side in my class. Caught myself talking too much yesterday
A3 no new instruction in the 30 min block. Ss work with teacher and other support staff to reinforce skills (2/2)
what kind of exit ticket does everyone use? https://t.co/JuOZM0Vfbi
Exit Ticket. I give last five minutes to complete and then remaining time is free time as a reward for good work
Yes. SO LUCKY to have amazing classrooms. They have speakers built in everywhere..and these..https://t.co/ZfLnFrOY96
Nice! The rule to myself is that I should never talk more than the students.
A3: Students can work at their own pace, on whatever they want and choose when to take their end assessment.
EPIC!! I love the theme music!! haha
I use exit tickets to find out how stdnts feel when learning something new. A quick easy checkin.
catch myself once in a while. remind myself that the person/people doing the most talking are doing most learning
I try to tie the exit ticket to the learning target to ensure they meet it, or if Ss need more time
A3- love the exit slip idea. i use it on socrative.
Q4. Describe how you motivate the unmotivated learner in your classroom.
use a no hands policy in my class. We think, chat 1st & then larger discussion with whole group
agree... the one who talks the most is the one who learns the most. heard that from a brilliant member of my pln.
A4: I tell them that failure is not an option. Also to really get to know them and form that bond of respect that a teacher needs.
A4. I agree with premise but don't use the term fail. I talk them up about new discoveries they made. Quit=fail
we all need to scrape our knees sometimes
A4: Looking into why they are unmotivated; too hard? too easy?
Good evening I am student at Coe College in Iowa. I am a teacher in training and was hoping to learn a little from other educators
Let me clarify... Failure is 100% okay and needed to learn but accepting failure as an end is not. https://t.co/INerYF9O8G
we all need to scrape our knees sometimes
I need to use more of an exit ticket idea. Anyone use google form for this? How do they run it?
Ty to all those joining tonight! Make sure to follow Ted talker and host tonight
Welcome!! Awesome to have you!! Jump on in! on question 4 now. Question 5 is coming up in 3 minutes. https://t.co/LDima9c3IO
Good evening I am student at Coe College in Iowa. I am a teacher in training and was hoping to learn a little from other educators
we use google classroom which will push the Google form out to all Ss in class. Really convenient
A4 I find stdnts are far more motivated if they feel that they matter and that they are valued
A4. Maybe they are bored?!? Looking inward helps this rather than pointing fingers.
Q5. How do you provide choice in activities and assignments? What challenges and successes have you had with this?
Cedar Rapids... not too far from where I taught for my first 12 years.. the Quad Cities.
A4- i like to use UDL. begin with goal and let them choose how they want to get there.
relationships relationships relationships!
Welcome! Nice to have you join in
A5: Students choose when to do the work and when to take the assessments. Most work far ahead of what I would have scheduled
Come on to twitter to meet our "neighbours" I enjoy twitter chats. :D
Relationships with kids is my highest priority. I love greeting them in the morning and "catching up"
A5 Upcoming Presidents' Day project-Ss choose pres to research and what aspect to research. They will choice in how to present
me too! Really difficult to plan for differentiated instruction if you don't acknowledge where you would like to go 1st
Do you have a blog that shares some of your strategies? I am sure many of us here at would love to read more.
Sure do! I have a blog and vlog that goes through how I've changed my class. https://t.co/saCTmCl05X https://t.co/HirkyYPwcT
Do you have a blog that shares some of your strategies? I am sure many of us here at would love to read more.
A5 classes with Ss that need more structure will not always work well with many choices
I do too. A must for me to make eye contact and a small verbal connection with each of them. Many come in early too.
So you allow students to work freely or do they still have to meet certain deadline?
I would love to know more about what strategies you use
I will say you need to complete this unit on exponential functions by Feb. 20. https://t.co/CEVFJmr0n1
So you allow students to work freely or do they still have to meet certain deadline?
A5 Ss who work at higher level will blow you away with what they produce. How can we get similar results with lower level Ss?
Q6. What are some quick & not so quick strategies you use to know your students and understand what each individual learner knows?
A6: I use . Simply an amazing tool to poll and safely text students (and parents)
A5. I found you need to invest more of your time discovering their interests & letting them know they matter at school
when you would assign that unit? (how much time do you give?)
A6- talk with them and play at recess with them. stay away from the staff room and get outside.
I have thought about that method before. I think student discussion is a good way to promote learning.
I plan about 1 day each but Ss almost always work ahead and delve deeper into topics or we do activities. https://t.co/PjXfudtAOM
when you would assign that unit? (how much time do you give?)
We are getting closer to the end of our chat tonight.
Also, compared to last year... 8th graders are 13 days ahead. 7th are 7 days ahead and 6th are 4 days ahead https://t.co/PjXfudtAOM
when you would assign that unit? (how much time do you give?)
Yup, my kids work collaboratively all day. NEVER QUIET. Let me upload a video of them working https://t.co/ZeyYvvyjWH

TY and all who joined tonight. make sure to build your pln.
We are just about to wrap up a wonderful chat tonight. Thank you all for joining us. Any suggestions for future chat topics?
a6. no hands policy, greeting them at door, open door policy before school, journal/blogs, think pair share, 5 minute conferences
Thanks so much for leading tonight's
so are you ever at the front of the class "lecturing"?
