Hi all! I'm Daina, Educational Technology Learning Coach for FWISD. I'm very excited to help teachers implement technology along with the learning model because they fit so well together! #FWEdChat
Ready!
Mark Jasso
Secondary Literacy Coordinator
And I'm excited about putting together some collections on TweetDeck to share with students to use during their research. #FWEdChat
Hello from Denver International Airport! Tech Coach from Fort Worth ISD waiting to get back there. Eager to learn more about UbD and Problem Based Learning in the near future! #Fwedchat
John from @fwsocialstudies - An instructional strategy I want to learn more about is conceptual thinking applied to regional contexts in World Cultures. #fwedchat
I'm Andy, a 1:1 Technology Learning Coach from @FWISDTech, and I'm always wanting to learn more about digital storytelling and its democratization of the classroom. #FWEdChat
Hi! Allison, here. EC-8 EdTech Coach. I’m eager to help teachers truly implement blended learning. I want the tech to just blend in and not be viewed as separate. #fwedchat
#fwedchat Michael Cummings Technology learning coach - I can’t wait to see all the ways to use our LMS #itslearning with our new learning model and technology integration
Hi, I’m Khechara from Florida, living in Texas, so proud of the #BestPractices videos. The vocabulary strategies in science 🔬 really appeal to me! #FWEdChat#Academics
A1: We can always learn more no matter how long we’ve been working or how great our classroom environment is. Sharing #BestPractices helps everyone refine the great things that are already happening in the classroom, helping our Ss in the end #FWEdChat
#FWEdChat A1 I agree that best practice is a refinement of everyday teaching. I feel daily lessons without incorporating a best practice or two would indicate an alternate practice less than ideal for our learners.
A1 #FWEdChat Agree - Most teachers already know how to teach, but sharing best practices is a great way to hone ones skills and grow. As teachers is it important to model #lifelonglearner
Victor Chapa, librarian and forever Social Studies teacher. I’m interested in Realia opportunities for students as an instructional strategy. #FWEdChat
A1: I agree with the thought that best practices are refinements of every day teaching. Best practices really allow you ways to tackle the curriculum/content in a way that's proven to be successful. #fwedchat
Jim Ekrut, EC-8 educational technology coach, loving PBLs. Some of my favorite practitioners use TouchCast Studio, PowerPoint, Sway, iMovie among others. #fwedchat
Q1: Teaching strategies/academic best practices are the refinement of the art that is teaching. If something works out if the data shows positive correlation, run with it. Make it work. That's good teaching! #fwedchat
#FWEdChat A1: Agree!!! Watched a phenomenal math teacher at Jacquet MS use QuizletLive to get his students to use the math vocab in academic discussions. He took “turn & talk” to the next level with a simple, free tech tool.
A1: Best practices make use of time-tested instructional strategies, but must be future-orientated where current teaching practice has become outdated or irrelevant. Remind us what works, but introduce teachers to inventive and effective new teaching skills. #FWEdChat
A1 #FWEdChat Agree - Most teachers already know how to teach, but sharing best practices is a great way to hone ones skills and grow. As teachers is it important to model #lifelonglearner
A1. We agree that academic Best Practices refine everyday teaching. We get to pick and choose the extend to which we learn & grow and how open we are to build on current practices. 🌟 #FWEdChat
I agree with you! We have to focus more on Ss reflecting on real world learning. They have to make connections, not just take a test. #Constructivism#fwedchat
A2 #FWEdChat Working with the implementation of the Learning Model one of the questions I hear is how to structure student reflection other than journaling? #bestpractices
A1: I have to disagree that Best Practices are the refinement of everyday teaching practices. Time has proven that everyday teaching practices are not always effective. Best Practices should be research driven and highly impactful. #FWEdChat
I agree....in sharing information/refining teaching you bring solutions to shared problems & learn new resources...we’re never to old to learn & perfect teaching strategies #FWEdChat
A2: Best practices associated with differentiation/language acquisition pose the greatest implementation challenge. These strategies are often identified as “just good teaching,” when in reality the selection, implementation, and monitoring must be deliberate. #fwedchat
A2: I love formative assessment, but it's always a work in progress. We constantly have to adapt and evolve our strategies so they don't become mundane and irrelevant. #FWEdChat
A2 #FWEdChat Group critiques are always a challenge - getting them to flow and stay on topic is difficult. I would say work in progress, because it changes every year.
A2: I always felt very successful w/my Ss when implementing close reading strategies & I also felt very successful at giving clear goals to the Ss & supporting them with encouragement/positive feedback. #FWEdChat
Time to take a breather...Breathe. (Yes, Joe's questions might make your head hurt a bit. Rest assured it's perfectly normal.) Shake it out. Breathe. Think a happy thing. Now...let's roll...Q3...
#FWEdChat
Q2: I've never had building relationships fail me. I think it's overlooked in education too often. It IS a strategy and it requires work and dedication. But, annotation & close reading are also near and dear to my heart. It works when Ss default to it without direction. #fwedchat
#FWEdChat Testing definitely leaves it mark, but I’ve seen creative & intentional teachers using best-practices to keep students engaged even in test review. I saw Gamification & stations this week in FWISD.
#FWEdChat A2. I used the problem solving process in the context of literacy strategies in the math classroom. I find it a successful process, but have continued to make improvements over the years.
Who approved these questions 🤣 is this social media or a dissertation? LOL! Twitter doesn’t give us enough space to respond to this!! #FWEdChat#FWEDDissertation
A2 #FWEdChat Working with the implementation of the Learning Model one of the questions I hear is how to structure student reflection other than journaling? #bestpractices
A2: Adding on to a comment earlier, I think making time to reflect on learning experiences is a best practice. This is something that has helped me grow as an educator and a learner. I add reflections to my ePortfolio. #fwedchat
I've found that video reflections are so impactful for everyone. You learn more when you're talking about it. Plus you can view what your peers/colleagues are reflecting on as well. Apps like @flipgrid are fantastic for this! #FWEdChat
#FWEdChat A2. Building strong, positive relationships and strong communication has not failed me yet! Tell the truth, but through love and make your feedback meaningful.
A3: Though there are "tried and true" strategies, how will new ones ever be discovered if people stop reinventing the wheel & trying new things? While I do agree that there are some best practices that will always be great, it never hurts to discover new ones! #FWEdChat

I think hearing those questions can only help promote the kind of thinking we need in education today.
I think one of the best ways is to remain learners ourselves. To place ourselves in situations where we have to be the learner using these practices.

A2: I have tried to focus this year on reflection in trainings I give. I make sure they are stored somewhere Ts can always go back to so that they can revisit what they’ve learned or if they have ?s #FWEdChat
A2 #FWEdChat Working with the implementation of the Learning Model one of the questions I hear is how to structure student reflection other than journaling? #bestpractices
A2) I fell like good practices are works in progress that are continually refined. Writing online is a good practice, but the avenue is always changing. #fwedchat
Q2: I've never had building relationships fail me. I think it's overlooked in education too often. It IS a strategy and it requires work and dedication. But, annotation & close reading are also near and dear to my heart. It works when Ss default to it without direction. #fwedchat
A3: I think the tried and true strategies have been tested in certain conditions, which is why they work. The challenge is to bring in new situations and perspectives to keep them relevant and engaging. #FWEdChat

A2:Strategizing units to increase use and understanding of Academic vocabulary is a major hurdle, but an incredible success when common practices are realized in assessment of learning. Word walls, flash cards, CLOSE bore students, but eventually work in raising lexile. #FWEdChat
A1: I agree that the best practices are a refinement of what we do in the classroom every day. Lots of teachers do lots of meaningful things and best practices helps encapsulate and contextualize that daily practice. #FWEDChat
A2: I value #reflection in the classroom to give Ss a way to think about their own learning. Time constraints often push it to a back burner, though. We have a lot to cover and not much time to revisit past work. #FWEDChat
A2: student-directed learning, a work in progress. Letting go of teacher-focused instruction takes time. A principal once told me, “people go into teaching for a sense of control.” #fwedchat
A3 #fwedchat Just because it worked in the past does not mean it will work in the future. I always ask teachers “Do you see a difference in our student than you did 5 or 10 years ago? “ If yes then the same stuff will not always work #trysomethingnew

#FWEdChat A2 -Quick Writes in literacy are truly to me an essential, daily best practice that addresses so much in a short time- get to know your kids, chance for SELs, cultural relevance, kids WRITE about things that are relevant to THEM - NOT prompt response writing.
Q3: The beauty of best practices is that they're ALL rooted in the same basic premises *cough**Learning Model*cough* How can we research in the modern age? How do we communicate? Etc. Work smarter by looking at the base. #fwedchat
A3: The statement I hate the most is “but this is the way we have always done it”...as educators we have to shift our strategies and techniques because we are teaching Ss in an ever-changing world. #fwedchat

A3: something that is often missing in the best practice conversation is student feedback/choice. Seeking student input might help take the “what’s old is new” conversation to a higher plane. #FWEdChat
Breathing. A3. Our students deserve more. The careers they are entering do not require them to use tried and true methods. The future looks much more agile, digital, and innovative thinking is required. #FWEdChat

A3:Hello I'm Dwight Cotton and when I hear people respond that they have used best practices and question why we Re reinventing the wheel. I wonder did they use the BP appropriately and consistently. Can we collaborate on what the strategy should actually look in class.#FWEDChat
#FWEdChat A3: Chats like this are a place to start! Teachers sharing successes and getting ideas from each other helps risk-taking flourish! Creating a culture of learning for teachers will benefit students.
#FWEdChat A3 Don't reinvent the wheel, but improve upon it. I believe a lot of what we do we tag as new when, in fact, it is connected to an older practice. So I think communicate efforts and ask yourself is it really a new thing? Give credit where credit is due!
#FWEdChat A1: One of the most challenging parts of problem solving is teaching students how to comprehend the problem itself. So I’ve experienced both A and B. The implementation is a work in progress but once the student has reached understanding, we experience success.
A3: Twitter is a fantastic start! #FWISD has a fantastic learning community that supports and learns from each other at all times. The more we share, the more we can all learn #FWEdChat

A3: I think we should be consistently assessing what we ask students to do in light of what their careers will ask of them. Recall and recitation are still important but the soft skills are becoming more needed too! #FWEDChat

A4: I think the model we have set up for Ts w/these videos is great. Quick, valuable, relevant snippets of best practices, followed by face-to-face sessions for even more support! I think this is great for Ts. It's never enough to watch a video & then expect mastery! #FWEdChat
A2: Teaching self reflection and peer reflection is a great strategies but it is a work in process cause you must be flexible to get the flow and expectations of reflection to become natural. #fwedchat
A4. #FWEdChat
I would say that I am getting the chance to learn new things from educators that I may not always get a chance to work with on a daily basis.
We can't be everywhere, and I like that any teacher in our district can view these resources on their own time.
A4) I like that we are modeling on-demand learning for our teachers. I am hopeful that more teachers will run with idea of their own on-demand videos that their students will have access to. #FWEdChat learning anywhere anytime!
A3: Time/tested practices and strategies are not reinvented when integrated with technology or given relevant makeover. They’re improved. Tell the colleague: The wheel may turn as it always has, but have you’ve seen the rims and tire technology these days! #FWEdChat
A4: The most exciting thing about the Academic Best Practices videos is the SHEER EXCITEMENT from all involved: @FWISDTech, @FWISDCurriculum, and so many others! With all of that energy, you know it's 💯💯💯 #FWEdChat
#FWEdChat That’s awesome! I’ve tweaked an inference routine for math word problems that helps students see connections between reading strategies and math. Powerful for students!
#FWEdChat A2. I used the problem solving process in the context of literacy strategies in the math classroom. I find it a successful process, but have continued to make improvements over the years.
A4: I love that it is getting Teachers to dip their toes into a blended learning environment. They can watch a video and get resources on our LMS and then receive in face to face support to follow up. #fwedchat
A3... Innovativeness is not always a matter of changing what good habits you've established, but more a matter of shifting your perspective to allow for more possibilities. The challenge is developing a system that allows old and new to co-exist in the same classroom. #FWEdChat
A3: I think the tried and true strategies have been tested in certain conditions, which is why they work. The challenge is to bring in new situations and perspectives to keep them relevant and engaging. #FWEdChat

THANK YOU for engaging in tonight's #FWEdChat! It's been a privilege hosting this community of learners. I look forward to next time. Until then, in the words of Dr. Seuss.....
“Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.”
A4. I love that teachers & school leaders can watch these Academic Best Practices videos anytime...24/7! And now that we have them created, we can use them for so many purposes with so many audiences! #FWEdChat
A4: What I find exciting about these on demand video series is the opportunity for creativity. Pen and paper are always great formats for delivery, and now having another approach strengthens our ability to connect with our teachers and students. #FWEdChat
#FWEdChat A4: Just-in-time learning is accessible for busy teachers. It is also personalized PD! Get what you need, when you need it. Hmm...another best-practice. 😁
A3: something that is often missing in the best practice conversation is student feedback/choice. Seeking student input might help take the “what’s old is new” conversation to a higher plane. #FWEdChat
#FWEdChat A3- “tried & true” based on what- results?
We do need tangible results to measure - yes, I said the bad word, data, but it’s important. I know there are practices that have been around forever, but how are they TRULY working? Collaboration is ALWAYS great!
A3: “tried and true” has more to do with unchanging necessities such as engagement, challenge, creativity, and achievement. What changes are the methods. #fwedchat
#FWEdChat A4: the videos allow me an opportunity to critique myself and open doors for self-reflection. The videos give an understanding and support with just a click!
A4: Videos powerfully share information, concepts, & culture. Videos reach people and help mold the way people think & feel. Look at the impact media has on our lives. Using video as a tool in all aspects of education should be a constant. Thrilled EdTech is on board. #FWEdChat
I've had SO MUCH fun working on this project. I'm excited to see where it leads us in the future, finding new ways to produce more blended and on-demand learning for Ts #FWEdChat
A3) Nothing new under the sun but everything changes in the shade. My grandmother use to say: Tried practices must change or improve depending on the student, content or situations. Don’t reinvent but definitely Upcycle to fit the need of your students #FWEdChat

A4) The ABP on demand videos give Ts a chance to sharpen their skill and give insight to the framework from the @FWISDCurriculum Writers perspective #fwedchat
You know it was a good #FWEdChat when my scroll bar in Tweetdeck never got above about halfway, and I'm still reading 10 minutes after it ended.
See everyone in two weeks (May 1st) for the next episode!
