I would describe it as learning which stems from a student's curiosity .. an intrinsic motivation to find answers to their own wonderings
#digitalEDchat
A1 Getting students involved in the 'what' of learning - knowing their passions, what makes them excited and tailoring teaching to those as much as practical
Knowing who learners are. #digitalEDchat
Hi Steven, great tweet and welcome! RT of Q1 #digitalEDcha. The more students are advocates in and for their own learning, the greater the gains IMO. RT of Q1 #digitalEDchat
Finding out Ss wondering re Topic from curriculum is a great way to find out where Ss thinking ๐ค is in relation what they know & what theyโd like to know #digitaledchat
the problem is ... when students have been 'told' what to do for a number of years, this becomes their idea of learning and it is hard to unlearn this!
#digitalEDchat
Ditto I think we all do at some point... I've found finding something else to keep me busy so learner can't ask me has been a good strategy :) #digitaledchat
not doing that and they know!
It is quite funny sometimes ... they look at me and go 'oh ... ummm ... oh ... ' and then walk away and try and figure it out!!!
#digitalEDchat

teacher barriers ... maybe our own understanding about HOW tล go about it ... finding out what foundational skills students need and teaching those first!
#digitalEDchat
A2 teacher barriers can be
1. Curriculum demanded
2. System & school requirements
3. Teacher pedagogy knowledge
4. Parent expectations
5. Lackey of collaboration in curriculum design
Just to name a few
#digitaledchat
A2 Letting go, knowing that even if they don't achieve what you set out to do in your time frame they're still learning realising that giving them time to take onboard new learning & fail more than once is going to be better in the long run. #digitalEDchat

A3
student barriers ... not been empowered to learn this way before so having to unlearn/relearn that their own wonderings are valid and worthy of pursuing
#digitalEDchat
a3. joining in late! #digitaledchat Mental barriers, technical issues, often times teacher holding too much control over content. Lack of risk taking cultures. Too much focus on assessment type instead of process type.
True 5. is so important and eventually gives better outcomes if you've had more than one person looking at it.. when running well - less work or at least more in depth focused on what learners need. #digitalEDchat
Hi Sashi, great start and welcome! #digitalEDchat. The control over content is a funny one as this is something students can access easily outside the classroom! #digitalEDchat
Yes I agree! I find that the more students create the learning (even if in partnership), the more engaged they are and for longer. They also value it a lot more. #digitalEDchat
a1. #digitaledchat The word agency comes to mind but its more than that. Content has elements of student interest + is implemented in a way that allows students to show leadership skills.
Ss not understanding the processes that can be drawn upon when working scientifically, historically, geographically, mathematically etc - itโs not only content they need to learn across the many learning areas #digitaledchat
A2 IMO a barrier for some teachers is the fear of potentially losing control or being seen as not knowing and until they learn to let go things will not change #digitaledchat
Great point Steven. We've shied away from this in teaching over the last few years. We then wonder why the students aren't resilent as adults. #digitalEDchat
a4. #digitaledchat teachers always struggle with ways to make content exciting/interesting/engaging. Learning more about how student-centric/created learning experiences can help is a win-win for everyone. The balance of knowledge control is better with student ownership.
A2 Excellent point and welcome to #digitalEDchat! Maybe teachers need to understand that resilence and genuine learning rarely happens in a controlled (totally) environment. #digitalEDchat
A4 I can do it myself students - becoming adults that actually go out and solve problems rather than one that moans and does nothing and/or creates problems #digitalEDchat
A4: A major benefit of student-created-learning is student responsibility. A key goal for teachers should be to progressively increase students' responsibility for learning as they develop their skills and shape their dispositions. #digitalEDchat
A5 it certainly can move beyond text book although edtech needs to be utilised in a way that empowers Ss to be creative in developing new knowledge from their learning
#digitalEdChat
lots of work needed to show students what balance is, teachers need to model too... #digitalEDchat playing around with how we're going to do this next year
definitely believe in teacher modelling - I am currently creating a driftwood whakapapa tree which tells my story of my new school:)

Having a play with this framework for looking at why of tech been around for a while but simple and seems fairly useful https://t.co/1gtVpLdCxr#digitaledchat
Thanks! We've got this as the core focus for Term 4 PLD. We felt the NZC KCs were not explicit for what we needed. Go to love Design teachers!!! #digitalEDchat

A6 one of my most memorable student created learning stemmed from a simple letter to Dave Dobbyn after a discussion around copyright which culminated in him visiting and performing for the school #digitaledchat
Student-driven learning is the ultimate pinnacle of teaching ๐๐ป Itโs the aim - students being in control of their journeys ๐๐ป #digitaledchat
P-2 Play-based learning 3-6 Educational Research Projects - as Director of L&T was able to see 650+ students create their own pathways in their learning & working with 26 classroom teachers & within their classrooms
#DigitalEDchat
I find that students need a good grounding in Metacognition and a growth mindset for student-centred or student driven anything to work effectively..... itโs an awesome thing though ๐๐ป #digitaledchat#learning#teaching
A6
to be honest ... I have a lot to work on to really get this concept happening the way I envision it. I also think it needs others on board to inspire and korero with
#digitalEDchat
A5. Use student choice to help amplify student voice. Let students choose the how, why, and what. Different tools offer different ways to empower different students! (Applies to digital and non-digital tools or a blend.) #DigitalEDchat
