We will follow a Q1/A1 format with Q1 popping up at 7:35. Subsequent questions will appear every 10 minutes thereafter. Please include #dubMSela so that everyone can see your tweets!
A1 The authentic audience depends on the product. It can be a peer group of 5, the entire class, a symposium in the library. This is a portion of the cycle that I will really have to think about when I try to come up with design project ideas. #dubMSela
A1: To be honest, the actually "launching" is what I struggle with the most. The book spoke of TedX events and other such inspirational launches, but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around that sort of endeavor. For now, I think i'll start small, with things... #dubMSela
A1 I struggle with finding authentic audiences for readers. We don't have elementary schools or other organizations that we can walk to, and forget about trying to take Ss anywhere. I need to learn how to use technology to get kids in front of audiences. #dubMSela

I also feel like the use of Twitter is a great start. I was so surprised when people outside of this book chat liked something I had commented on during our first week. That was my first dose of an authentic audience on Twitter! #dubMSela
I feel the same way. It would be cool if you could connect with another classroom even within the district for one of your units. Like to compare results or "challenge" one another. #dubMSela
No, but I often have families comment on student work and send me their thoughts and replies. Love the idea of having large family events, but that sounds bigger than starting small. š± #dubMSela
A2 Selling creative ideas is a means for Ss to find validity and worth in their creation. In the launch cycle, students have to believe in their product in order to get their audience to realize they canāt live without it.#dubMSela
A2 I had never thought about Ss having to sell their ideas. It seems like it would help Ss see the value in what they are doing for real-world purposes, not just doing "school." #dubMSela
A2: When students take the time to create, get to know their audience and fine tune their product, they are ready to "sell" their ideas! This is part of the LAUNCH cycle, because it keeps the entire process authentic, and not necessarily just for a grade!! #dubMSela
A1: I totally agree with @Worldhistagram. I think the worst thing I can do it try to go big... I take one day at a time, start with small things and work my way to big. Confidence is a huge thing for me. #dubMSela
I know how that feels... used to take kids out when I was at DMS and SMS. Not anymore at KMS. But I know in my heart this is where technology is key in establishing connections. #dubMSela
A2: I think that the whole process gives students the ownership and confidence to believe in their creation- and to me the confidence and faith that they develop through the process is the "sell" if that makes sense?

What did the 7th graders do at Deer Run? #dubMSela
Totally unrelated random side note: There was a mama deer and 2 spotted twin fawns in my yard yesterday!
I had several students present projects to me in study center because they were so fearful of presenting in front of the entire class. I think back to Toby's suggestion of presenting to table groups. This may be a way to build the confidence, #dubMSela

A3: The idea of marketing is brilliant, I get stuck more on the actual producet that students create, more than the marketing - but I loved what the authors said about ethical marketing and marketing as a life skill. #dubMSela
Having students take ownership is key, but it is also the biggest challenge (at least in my classroom). This will definitely be a priority for me next year. #dubMSela
A3 As mentioned in the text, learning about marketing allows students to view the world with a critical eye. They also learn about the ethics of marketing which is a vital life lesson. #dubMSela
A3 I had never thought about all the life skills inherent in marketing. I liked the points about developing courage, gaining creative confidence, becoming more critical consumers, and building empathy. #dubMSela
A3 cont In the school setting, marketing/buy in strategies have been used in social studies quite a bit. I at least have that model to follow and try to apply to science. #dubMSela
A4 In science there are several topics that naturally lend themselves to design type activities. It will be a gradual transition or me to a full blown design cycle throughout the year. #dubMSela
A4 cont In addition, we all have technology standards that involve the design process. Students creating tutorial videos for their peers could cover both content and tech standards and use at least part of the design cycle.
#dubMSela
A4 This is really a struggle for me with reading intervention. I just really don't have any ideas what I would have Ss design or make that would support them as readers and their specific individual goals. #dubMSela
A4: I don't know if it is a balance of integration of launch cycle into curriculum standards and maps. I think there is less pressure and more room for "failure" because SS is not tested like Math and LA #dubMSela
A4 - This is one of simpler parts of the LAUNCH cycle for me. I feel like their is a lot of room within the curriculum for student choice and initiative, and Launch is perfect for that. Now finding an authentic audience is a different story... #dubMSela

Sorry Iām not participating tonight...on vacation with the family in @chincochamber Chincoteague Island and am looking forward to the swimming is the ponies tomorrow. #dubMSela

A5 The section āshould I assess the product or processā did not help me with this. The bottom line is standards mastery which is always the goal with all types of topics/activities/projects. The development of a design project must be planned around the standards. #dubMSela
A5 cont The students need to be aware of it throughout the entire launch cycle. Similar to our learning targets we use now. We already check in on them on a regular basis and self assess our understanding prior to formal assessment #dubMSela
A5: I love using Google Surveys as a way to gather student feedback on their learning. Students are usually very forthcoming about their work ethic, their effort and their understanding. #dubMSela
So what do you think that would look like? I don't know the science standards for 7th grade, but would you have a standard ad then evaluate how close the Ss came to mastery in their projects? #dubMSela
I find it interesting when students self assess their level of understanding and then take a formal assessment. When they go back and see how they did compared to their prediction and figure out where the disconnect occurred. Powerful. #dubMSela
I find myself directing Ss back to the standards in activities like these. It seems they lose sight easily, if you don't help them see the connections! #dubMSela
I would love to see an example of this! What do they typically do with that information? Can you see students making adjustments as time goes on? #dubMSela

I am not sure how to go about this. Last year I "initially assessed" a project and allowed students to revise their work a final time before a grade was entered. Lots of time but beneficial for the kids to figure out what was incorrect, etc. #dubMSela
A6 I plan to start small with a timed design challenge. Simply to get students thinking along these lines. As I get to know my students, more complex design projects will hopefully evolve. #dubMSela
A6 cont Eventually, the goal is to have students go through at least one complete launch cycle. Prior this, Ss will be sharing their work with an audience on a regular basis in order to bring more validity and pride to their work. #dubMSela
Yes.. with writing in language arts, I always want students to revise and work through sever "iterations" before they turn in a final project. But inevitably, I end up chasing down the final submissions for a lot of Ss. #dubMSela
Over the course of the year, the self awareness of the students really does improve. They begin to figure out what types of things they are misunderstanding and become much more active participants in their learning. More proactive. #dubMSela
In Rhonda's PBL class, we've done a lot with Google Suite. I'm starting with that - from building online tours of historical places, to creating websites reflective of their learning. #dubMSela
