Q1: @shakeuplearning Kasey Bell says, "Teachers and students live in a culture of testing and prescribed curriculum that do not always fit the needs of our students or...the future workforce." Do you agree - why or why not? #TxEd
Are you a transformational leader? Consider sharing your story to others so they can learn from you & grow their own campus. It's summertime, a great time for you to provide your story so others can start off the next year with some ideas. Give it a go! https://t.co/dYqmTMHsAC
A1: Anything that is "prescribed" is supposed to be for ONE PERSON - like when a medication is prescribed. It's not for everyone. We don't prescribe narcotics for allergies. Why do we prescribe the same curriculum for each kid? #txed#ShakeUpLearning
Q1: @shakeuplearning Kasey Bell says, "Teachers and students live in a culture of testing and prescribed curriculum that do not always fit the needs of our students or...the future workforce." Do you agree - why or why not? #TxEd
A1: Agree! The future is rapidly changing for us and our students. We have to prepare them for an ever changing life. One size fits all does not work anymore, because the future takes all shapes/sizes/creeds. It's our job to pave the way. #TxEd
Q1: I agree! We should be a lot more concerned about preparing students for life and their personal success than test scores. Our ed system needs an update to better prepare our students for the future. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
Agree. Because we are educating students for jobs that have not even been considered or constructed yet. Some kids may not be interested in those jobs. #txed
Q1: @shakeuplearning Kasey Bell says, "Teachers and students live in a culture of testing and prescribed curriculum that do not always fit the needs of our students or...the future workforce." Do you agree - why or why not? #TxEd
A1-I agree. The world is becoming more and more complex. Preparing students to bubble on a test will have not significant impact in helping them overcome the world's challenges #TXed

A1 100% agree! Life doesn’t follow a curriculum or meet the needs of every student. Technology and needs change often & that’s not always in a guide or standard. #txed
A1 I agree that they live in that culture and that it does not completely meet their needs. Other skills that are not in the prescribed curriculum would help meet their need in reference to the future workforce. #txed#ShakeUpLearning

#txed A1 STAAR Tests ARE aligned to the TEKS. If you are teaching the curriculum, then the STAAR tests are basically final exams. The question is... TOO MANY tests probably doesn't benefit the Ss. NO TEST can assess the greatest lessons Trs teach, which is LOVE JOY KINDNESS
A1 I think that education can be tailored more for the needs of the students and where they are headed. Testing also doesn't have to be pencil to paper all the time either. No one evaluates me like that! #differentiate txed
Like financial literacy. I took "financial literacy" for a week in high school. It was like "Don't forget to pay your credit cards. Also you should not spend all your money in one place." Thanks; very helpful. I got a certificate. #txed#ShakeUpLearning

A2 My son is a perfect example! There are so many things that he has learned on his own by using Google and Youtube! Interest, self-choice, at his own pace. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
Howdy #txed from Barbara, newly retired school counselor after serving for 34 years. Time now for my encore career in consulting, mentoring, coaching and writing.
State testing misses the most important success skills of empathy, compassion, kindness, respect, responsibility.
#txed A2 Over the past 28 years of teaching I have discovered that the more you encourage collaborative learning (peer tutoring) learning grows. When the kids are teaching their peers you can actually HEAR the learning. Teaching kids to work together is KEY!
A2-Information is easily access at a fast rate. Answers are easily googled. We have to understand the availability of information at hand and the understanding that the effort to produce quality questions are a must to enchance learning. #TXed
A2: I learn by experience. I use Hopper/AirBnB and other apps to travel easier. Tech is changing the way we do everything (blockbuster vs. netflix). We have information ready at our fingertips, we have to tap into that for our Ss. #TxEd
#txed A2 Over the past 28 years of teaching I have discovered that the more you encourage collaborative learning (peer tutoring) learning grows. When the kids are teaching their peers you can actually HEAR the learning. Teaching kids to work together is KEY!
A2: We can learn what we NEED to learn for free, but we pay to "learn" things we don't necessarily need just to open doors to learn what we DO need. Education has become transactional. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A2: I love that learning is at our fingertips, just a click away, unlimited sources and a #PLN that provides accountability, passion and joy. Sharing that experience by trying out new ideas with my students so I can grow alongside of them is the icing on the cake! #txed
A1: Does the assessment focus on the gaining of skills? If we truly focus our practices on measuring skills and work intentionally focus on real world generalization we can prepare our students. Critical Thinking is timeless! #TXed
A2: "When it's your work, your job...of course you want to do less of it". It has stuck with me since the first time I viewed it. How do I get motivated if its work? Same for students. I have learned much from social collaboration. Collaborating is key. even in classrooms. #TXED
YES. Kids are becoming influencers making exponentially more money than anyone else, teaching others online, and learning online. How are we not praising them for this? You got 1,000,000 people to watch your tutorial - you deserve praise. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A2 My son is a perfect example! There are so many things that he has learned on his own by using Google and Youtube! Interest, self-choice, at his own pace. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
We got it as a one-week special class during economics in senior year. Nobody taught me that student loans were not dischargeable and I could have put college on a credit card and Chapter 7'd that debt away at 21 years old and made a full recovery by now. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
Q1: @shakeuplearning Kasey Bell says, "Teachers and students live in a culture of testing and prescribed curriculum that do not always fit the needs of our students or...the future workforce." Do you agree - why or why not? #TxEd
A3: Teach kids how to make money doing something they love. Teach kids how to communicate VERBALLY. Teach kids how to use their connections to boost everyone up. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A3 3 changes I would like to see in education would be: more flexibility with "minutes" in subjects. Not everyone needs the same thing. More real-world PBL learning in schools, and less pressure on state assessments. #txed
A3-Second, there could be a debate between traditional and standard base grading. I see great benefits in standard base but seem that we fear of losing the traditional. #TXed
A3: I’d love to see the weight of attendance in determining TEA distinctions reduced. The reality is that we can put many systems in place to improve attendance, but ultimately have little control. #TXed
A1: I agree that the two don't always mesh, however we are charged with preparing are students for the end of the year just as we are for years down the road. Both are important. #txed
Q4: Kasey Bell says, "As an educator, you are most effective when you communicate with students in ways they understand." How does this apply to the knowledge we have and vocabulary we use? #txed
But do we really care whether they can guess which word the author could have used instead out of a selection of 4 relatively reasonable choices? Or should we be measuring something else? #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A3: A better way to assess students! Make it authentic, reliable and valid. Create more opportunities for Ss to find/explore their passions in school. Create opportunities for Ts to find creativity in the way they teach and not be tied down to prescribed curriculum. #TxEd
A3 How the state assesses students, how to create digital citizens through tech experiences, and how to provide meaningful experiences for all learners throughout the campus and district. #TXed
#txed A3 1. DO NOT tell our Ss that if you don't go to college you are basically a loser 2. DO NOT create state assessments that have a 38% as passing! 3. BRING BACK a vibrant job works program where high school kids can be taught a trade. #AlwaysBelieve
A2: Technology is changing how we teach and how students learn. With that being said, collaboration has become more accessible and vital from campus to campus, district to district and grade level to grade level. #txed
A3- state testing has to change...
Smaller classes or more aides in classes to give all kids a fair shot in school. Kids that can't read and kids reading 4 years above level don't learn or behave the same #TXed
A2: Wow! What an eye opening video. Motivates me to create lessons that are more engaging for students. Lessons that will not make them ask "will this be on the test?" or "are you grading this?", but instead will make happy like creating art. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A4 Vocabulary and standards aren’t going away. However, how we introduce and immerse students in academia does make a difference. Giving Ss a purpose for learning and through more than one route. #TXed
A4: All language serves a purpose. If we're trying to communicate information, we don't need to turn it into a vocab lesson. Communicating and teaching new ways to communicate are two different things. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
Q4: Kasey Bell says, "As an educator, you are most effective when you communicate with students in ways they understand." How does this apply to the knowledge we have and vocabulary we use? #txed
That's where my gripe with some standardized tests comes from. Recently read an article (I'll find it and share) about an author whose poem was used on a state exam and she couldn't figure out the right answers to the MC questions. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
#txed A4: We have to expose our students to a wide range of vocabulary in different ways. Making connectiions is crucial. Vocabulary is important for any job and daily interactions
A3 -
1. More evidence-based practices
2. Eradication of edumyths in the classroom (learning styles, the learning pyramid, only use 10% of brain, left/right brained, etc.)
3. Less 'bells and whistles' in the classroom that don't produce results.
#txed
A2: Information is at our fingertips! Have a question? Google it! But it reminds me that we have to begin to ask un-google-able questions... move up the blooms! Growth in skills and information processing leads to critical thinking. OUR FUTURE! #TXed
A4: Make content relevant to students by finding out what they are passionate about or what they think is cool. If having them drop a Bitmoji on their explanation gets them excited- add the Bitmoji! Speak THEIR language without lowering your context expectations. #txed
Q4: Kasey Bell says, "As an educator, you are most effective when you communicate with students in ways they understand." How does this apply to the knowledge we have and vocabulary we use? #txed
Q5: With instant access to information, the value of rote memorization has declined. What practices could be set aside or altered if this is true? #txed
#txed A4 This is one reason why I wrote my book "The Story of Always Believe" coming out this fall. A big key... You NONVERBAL communication trumps your actual words. There is power in everything you do with the kids. #BELIEVE in them is the tops!
A3: Less testing!! More devices in every classroom to make tech available to every student at any time. More movement and interactivity while learning. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A4: I find their language and platform, then incorporate it into the content to build relevance. This builds student engagement, personal interest, and student buy-in. #txed
#txed A5 I have my Ss match math vocabulary words to tables graphs and pictures. The Algebra STAAR Test has A LOT of vocab problems. Ss need to know what the math terms are in these diagrams. It's not the memorizing of a definition, it's the APPLICATION of the meaning of the word
A5 - Memorization...knowing things...is essential. You cannot be creative with, or assimilate new information, if you don't have the knowledge.
Rote memorization isn't the end game, but it can be important in schema development and application of material.
#txed
Q5: With instant access to information, the value of rote memorization has declined. What practices could be set aside or altered if this is true? #txed
A5: Yes and no. We CAN google everything, but life is hard when you have to google how to spell every word you write. Doctors need to memorize anatomy but don't need to memorize the exact symptoms of 1000000 ailments. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
Q5: With instant access to information, the value of rote memorization has declined. What practices could be set aside or altered if this is true? #txed
A4: Read this in Ch. 2 this afternoon. Speak their language and if you don't know what it means - Google it! Make sure your vocab and language are current and on level for your students. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
#txed
A5 It’s not about memorization anymore; it’s application of vocabulary, situations, and how to extend. While memorizing still has a purpose for some, it’s how the information applies now. Shifting from paper/pencil to live situations. #TXed
A3: 1: The latest and best in tech not just the most economical (Interactive touch devices to simulate the tactile need of our students) 2: A focus on external collaboration to build real-world preparedness 3: Structures that are built for creativity and analysis #TXed
A5: Teachers must evaluate what content IS still needed automatically and which can be googled. There is some knowledge that we must have at the ready, and some that we can be familiar enough with to be able to run a search and easily find the answer. #txed
Q5: With instant access to information, the value of rote memorization has declined. What practices could be set aside or altered if this is true? #txed
A5: I’ve been saying for a while we need to reduce the length of time on analog clocks, coin identification, etc. in primary math. A simple understanding, yes... half the school year? No. We are looking at the time on our smartphones and using debit cards for payment. #txed
#txed A6 Technology (especially social media" has enabled me to spread my #AlwaysBelieve message to a GLOBAL audience. With my upcoming book "The Story of Always Believe" hopefully I can start presenting to others schools how my 1st rule has impacted OUR kids.
A6: Now instead of worrying about irrational things, I can google my way to rationalization. SOME STUDY SOMEWHERE AGREES WITH ME, right, Google Scholar?! #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A6 Technology keeps me informed, organized, and up to date. Twitter has introduced me to so many things and has revolutionized my PLN in the process. #TXed
Thank you. I don't try to be contrary on purpose, but I also don't fit the mold of the typical teacher who just buys into anything. I spend a lot of my time/effort with cognitive processes and how they apply to learning and the classroom. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
#txed A6 part 2 Since it is summertime, when you have 7 minutes check out how #AlwaysBelieve impacted Dayton, TX, a place I taught for 20 years. It is POWERFUL! https://t.co/H1n2oPC6Lp
A7: Fortunately, I'm part of the same generation as the kids I teach, so it's not a "change" for me - it's all I know. Ask me again in 20 years when I'm a generation or two apart from them. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A5: Memorization is still important in come cases (math facts for example). However, being able to memorize something long enough to take a test is not really learning. It's time to change the way we assess our students. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A7: With social media tools at our fingertips, we can tell the good news about our schools everyday! We can communicate so much more frequently and easily with our parents and community. #txed
Awesome chat #TXed peeps. Many thanks for joining us. Special thanks to @ShakeUpLearning for allowing us to do this book study! Have a great week and #ShakeUpLearning
#txed A7 21st century kids are SENSITIVE to EVERYTHING! Every single word or action you do has the potential to be what you are remembered by. BE POSITIVE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IN ALL YOUR WORDS AND ACTIONS! When you do this JOY is produced.
A7 The 21st century has opened my eyes to flexible seating, more possibilities, and voice/choice. It has also given me ways to protect my eager learners through internet safety. It’s a world of possibilities out there. #TXed
A4: Clear communication and rigorous vocabulary exposure are not mutually exclusive. Know your students, use rigorous language and provide incidental vocabulary instruction. Clear concepts and higher level vocabulary open new worlds for our students! #TXed
“The new total of 100,445 affected students marks a roughly 30,000-student increase from Morath’s previous estimate of the number who encountered computer problems.”
#txed#txlege
A6: When I was in HS in the mid-90's it was still pretty rare for someone to have a computer in their home or a cell phone. The changes I have seen since then have been astronomical. My students would not even recognize that world. #txed#ShakeUpLearning
A7: Though I wish I had followed my heart and became a teacher earlier, since I have only been teaching 3 yrs, it is easier for me to embrace tech in the classroom because I didn't really know teaching without it. #txed
A5: What do we do with the information we have? The amount of information we have coming in impacts how we ask questions. The book “Big Data” really impacted my thinking about how we process data. This critical thinking is more crucial than rote memorization. #TXed
