Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
What a gift it was to lead an amazing group of educators through a design challenge that helped us imagine real tangible ways we might educate for #Reconciliation. We were left with a sense of hope that this IS possible. @sj_bartlett @crconsortium #dtk12chat
Hi Everyone. Brian here from NC. I am a new DT teacher in North Carolina at North Rowan High School #dtk12chat I am excited to learn more about DT and teaching S the process. Favorite 80s movie is spaceballs
A0: Hey there! It’s Ellen back from China and tweeting from the SF Bay. So bad at picking a ‘favorite.’ Only thing coming to mind now is Bill and Ted, altho I know there were others. ;) #dtk12chat
We went onto the land with two Indigenous Elders, who shared stories of the place and helped us understand it in a new way. We noticed our place deeply, and observed and listened with heart. #Dtk12chat

Jill checking in from MN only to say Top Gun all of the way & a quick hi- off to celebrate birthdays. I look forward to connecting w/ #dtk12chat next week
Man, that’s harder than the fave movie question! I’m gonna have go with Doc…fumbling around in my own head, dangerous around electricity… lol… #dtk12chat
Metacognition is a less talked about aspect of design thinking, but fits in perfectly. Setting goals, reflection, assessing what works and what needs to be learned. “Five Ways to Boost Metacognition In the Classroom” by @spencerideashttps://t.co/wLO9jEr9RP#dtk12chat#dtk12lab
#ohedchat will be in a Q1, Q2 with responses A1, A2, etc. HOWEVER! Tonight's chat is GIF only answers. We are going to test your creativity in answering the questions. No words. GIFs only.
Hi, y’all! Every time I watch a favorite 80’s movie with my kids, I cringe at how racist and sexist they all are. Have y’all WATCHED temple of doom in the past 20 years?? #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat ack wifi is super spotty & full disclosure, I'm distracted by my seatmate a producer on "Naked & Afraid" with the craziest stories to tell. May have to catch up later. #BestofIntentions
A1 I had to create an 3-d model of the atom in physical science. Up till then, I had never done that and did not get # of protons/neutrons. After creating model, I got it and majored in chemistry as a result
#dtk12chat I loved chemistry after that challenge
A1: I didn’t have a lot of memorable learning in HS, but I had one teacher who exposed us to world lit, and loved to debate current event issues. #dtk12chat
A1 when I was a senior, my government studies class continued a project started the year before to research & promote tele-voting in rural communties; I hand delivered our white paper to our congressional delegation in DC; it was neat #dtk12chat
A1: i remember getting into finding symbolism Steinbeck’s Snake. Most memorable pt, working w/a grp where everyone into itall into it… probably a 1st.Also loved 12th grade psych class #dtk12chat
As the school yr. rolls on, our mind can get consumed w/stress about past experiences or anxiety for the future ones. Being mindful of our 5 senses can help bring us back to the present & empower our mental well being. Hope you can share your strategies w/is #ohedchat#dtk12chat
Let the busy begin! Checkout these questions from #K12ArtChat host @epesART tomorrow, as he talks all about the importance taking care of our own mental health as the school year gets going!
White papers, authentic research, community based???? Somebody went forward in time to grab that? Or maybe we were always there...but we've forgotten our place. #dtk12chat (#sense?)
I had to move from my home town between 9th grade and 10th grade. It was a blessing and a curse. I got to reinvent myself without being reminded of my past or being annoyed by the boy who had sat behind me in homeroom since the 1st grade. #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat A1) Memorable HS learning challenge: Eng/Soc Stud simulation as Polish immigrant Mary Mikeselowski, single mother of 6...two w/symptoms of bronchitis. Grade dependent on successful emigration through Ellis Island (ability to fake to make it).
Completely! Barbara Herzberg is retired but still performs at her local theater. @RutgersPrep has been hiring folks like Barbara for 250 years... #dtk12chat
A1: I also learned that words matter, and I could use them to induce headaches in my teachers because I wasn’t being intellectually challenged. 😜#dtk12chat
It was pretty cool; sometimes we didn't know what we were doing and it felt a little vague; still, it gave me a feeling that young people can do important things -- also we partnered w Canadian researchers! #dtk12chat
The nebuluousness of it at times.. it could feel like we were not necessarily learning a lot.. until we reflected on it.. our teachers were good at helping us "wake up" to it #dtk12chat
A1: my HS didn’t do any memorable design challenges it was pretty much “sit and get” type instruction with an exception of an “applied biology” class where we a few project activities. #dtk12chat
I often think they had it down more in the 70s and 90s. left out 80s cuz i didn’t have a very positive experience in high school. then along came no child left behind. #dtk12chat
A2 I learned that I could teach myself and that I could be a better researcher. I learned that I was controlled my learning, not the teacher. It was empowering especially since I did not enjoy the teacher #dtk12chat
A1. A learning challenge was physics and figuring out that I was stronger at building the models than parsing theory and formulas. Good thing I had a good lab partner #dtk12chat
Q2 I thought having the “best” ideas meant arguing for, & then voting for your ideas. This was the beginning of understanding synthesis, & about not just finding the right partners, by being the right partner #dtk12chat
I think that was such a great revelation for you. #dtk12chat It makes a difference when S learn about challenging themselves if the adults are not challenging them
A2 self worth. It was huge. I felt like I could contribute to something, even if that something was kinda confusing and some days it felt like we were just stuffing envelopes. But that was all part of it. #dtk12chat
Asking smart kids to help out the other kids isn’t challenging. That’s what I love about the shifts happening today. All kids are given opportunities to grow #dtk12chat
I’m doing a birdwalk question… when did folks graduate from high school. Different decades, different learning experiences 1987 (but I skipped 1st grade ;) ;) #dtk12chat
Joking aside, #dtk12chat I’d have to say a challenge in HS for me was not having any career exposure and limited exposure about college choices. I did find my path junior year through the @boyscouts Exploring program I did @KetchumPR where I ended up getting a job!
A2: I got the first hint at how I wsa fine unless things didn't fit the way I wanted to work. I didn't have the capacity to flex with my surroundings and work with things I didn't have control over. Coulda used that! #dtk12chat
As a new DT instructor, I am experiencing that now with one of our classes. We have to shift to focus on S growth for all S #dtk12chat it shows them that we care about them and their individual growth

A3: As a teacher, I tried to vary experiences so students could connect at the level they deemed appropriate. Don’t teach to the middle. Teach to all. #dtk12chat
I think folks were interpreting "learning challenge" as a design challenge. Our whoops - we were only speaking of challenging moments in learning, nothing design specific. #dtk12chat
A3 I don't often recall that particular project, but I recall the relationship I had with my two teachers -- how they believed in me and my talents, trusted me, and showed genuine excitement about my contributions #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat A3) Simulations are my a major, student-centered way I prefer to bring content to life while instilling empathy, imagination, and agency. Works every time, yet is never duplicated. I always learn as much as the Ss.
A3: It makes me think about the experience of my students and how I can give them as much control as possible over their own learning. If I can help them find their road into the topic, I've done the most important part of my job. #dtk12chat
A3. I became a designer and eventually taught on the university level. As an instructional coach I try to help break down theories like #designthinking into practical applications. #dtk12chat
A3: I don't remember a certain learning challenge though HS (with the exception of tests, which I hated), however, I do remember the teachers that allowed us to create and innovate and how that empowered me as a learner. #dtk12chat
@ED_by_design i think it’s interesting 2 look at this… Different yrs were different trends in educ look what no child left behind did. & high schoolers in 90s had different experience than i did in 80s & friends in 70s also different. pull what works from each era. #dtk12chat
I left my isolated Innu/ fishing village @ 14 to attend a semi private school w/ uniforms. Incredibly smart people and I really had to work hard to keep up & deal with the culture shock.. take a city bus, don't leave a purse by the sink but take it 2 the stall #dtk12chat
His sys was flawed - Final Exam ?: Using what you learned in Civics, why will you vote @ 18?” I said, “I won’t, because I don’t have to. And if you don’t give me an A, then all you taught me about free democracy was a lie.” 😉 #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat A4 We bring guest speakers into our classrooms to share their stories. Actually teach a class on the 1980s. Here are some of the history makers who have visited our class.
A4 We have to get to know our S on a personal level (how they learn, challenges they experience in learning, etc). We keep this in mind as we help them develop and encourage and support them moving forward #dtk12chat
A4: as an admin in a school - fundamentally shifting almost every system defined as we know it in most HS to our more progressive model that supports real-world rigorous learning #dtk12chat
No...I kept the paper to a minimum, I read all the information on the Trapper folders...and it just worked for me. Never had trouble with the velcro...that I can recall. #dtk12chat
A3&4) In 8th grade, I failed honors algebra. I didn’t understand and fell farther and farther behind because I didn’t like my teacher and literally hid behind my book while she talked. I try to actively reach all the kids, esp if my instinct says “ugh...” #dtk12chat
A4: Oops, kinda answered this in #3, but the most obvious way was that I created The Learning Project, a crazy, independent study course where learning content doesn't actually matter and learning the skill of being able to learn when/wherever is everything. :) #dtk12chat
Joking aside, #dtk12chat I’d have to say a challenge in HS for me was not having any career exposure and limited exposure about college choices. I did find my path junior year through the @boyscouts Exploring program I did @KetchumPR where I ended up getting a job!
YAAAASSSS - I just tried to avoid all uncomfortable interactions and for me, admitting to the T that I didn't understand / follow them was SUPER uncomfortable. #dtk12chat
Interesting that he played the #momcard when you broke the system. It is almost like he was more concerned with maintaining status quo instead of seeing the great thinking that occurred #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat A4 our live speakers have been Brad Long, Buddy from the movie Hoosiers, Philo Barnhart creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20. Engage our Ss!
#dtk12chat the other thing an unpersonalized high school experience did for me as an educator was teach me about the value of really getting to know Ss + staying in touch w them after they graduate.
A4. in coaching T's I push them to look for learning opportunities across the curriculum so when students work on projects differentiated learning is leveraged. #dtk12chat
And they make you a better teacher and create a strong learning environment where students can grow much more #dtk12chat I appreciate S who challenge what I say and are thinking about it
In reply to
@LSpencerEdD, @Ed_by_design, @mrterborg
I often wonder how much differentiation there is available in just opening the door and walking down the hall. Thinking about what you see today... #dtk12chat
A1A2 I did a program where we went to the hospital to learn about careers. People seemed so sad and there was a loss of dignity (-an elder had peed the bed but a nurse just sprayed a vile mist) I realized I could not be part of that system. #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat A4 Our guest speaker program started in 2013 thanks to Original MTV VJ Mark Goodman who agreed to speak to my 1980s class. He has returned each year to speak with our Students. Cannot thank him enough for supporting education!
High school felt so disconnected from real life to me. I couldn’t wait to get out and do something that mattered. My favorite T had nothing to do with class, it was that she saw, heard & valued me as a person. I could feel it. Still in touch w/her now. #dtk12chat#empathy2action
A5 this is something we hope to collect & use via the #sicmbc; a lot of #designthinking underground, in the cracks; bias to action before training the mindset; gonna try to get students in other classes turning free choice projects into free choice problem solving #dtk12chat
A5: Many students are challenged by proclaiming their interest in something. Not all of them know their interests, and when they can discover them, they are often worried they might be wrong. I try to remind them that they can be interested in more than one thing #dtk12chat

A3 My peers also left home fairly young for school. Even under difficult conditions, people can find success if there is a good match with internal drive and external expectations. That may be biased though.#dtk12chat
Interesting. I ate high school for lunch once I figured it out. Still, I could have figured it out & vomited, too. The whole "must do public school/compliance" issue is dispeptic. #dtk12chat I hate that I once told my debaters 2 "play the game of school" so they could debate
I am always taken back when S in high school have difficulty telling me their interests. I wonder if they feel that their interests may not be valued as opposed to really having them #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat#dtk12chat A5) Seeing Ss identify community needs & design products as solutions to needs w/ support of @RWScholars#edcorps is incredibly exciting. Need to design ways to see these compassionate enterprises throughout school years.@SNWANeedEdcorp@GrantLearns knows!
Man, time has gone by so quickly I feel like I'm cruising down the road in a stainless steel car at 88mph... Our last #dtk12chat question is right around the corner.
Watching Ss shed assumptions about people. Realizing when you are designing with, you are learning someone & their whole story. You can’t assume you know what matters or what challenges them. Ss work with or #EdCorps, #LightningOrthtotics has hammered this home for me #dtk12chat
A. 5 When I see the kids working with a real end-user-how much they get into solving that problem. I've had this experience watching students at @DrewCharter#dtk12chat

Anytime you can bring a guest speaker that can shed some #gnarly viewpoints of #mtv when there was actual music and videos is #totallytubular#dtk12chat

A1: Stock market challenge in economics. Naturally, I picked a little technology company that very few had ever heard of at the time, Google. I tried to invest real money in the stock, but my dad told me it was a waste of money. #dtk12chat
A6 As a new DT teacher, I am working on this. I have realized that many of my S lack confidence in themselves. They don't feel quite "worthy." We are working to help them re-image themselves so they realize that they are quite capable & can design their future #dtk12chat

A6: make it as real as you can, when you can. really getting to know & understand real users creates paths to deeper empathy. #empathy2action#dtk12chat
A. 5 When I see the kids working with a real end-user-how much they get into solving that problem. I emphasize in project lesson plans to have a game plan for involving real end-users, stakeholders and experts on some level. #dtk12chat
Heading back to bricks and mortar schools after teaching online folk aged 14 to 50+ Socials 11 looks like it will be a fun course to incorporate DT. I probably have the same mixed bag of emotions as some of my future students !!! Which is a good thing. #dtk12chat
A2: I knew that I needed realistic projects and assignments. I wasn't connecting with the content anymore, my grades weren't as strong, and I didn't have the motivation or love for learning that I had early in my education. #dtk12chat
In my experience, many of them have never figured out their interests. With a traditional school experience, they haven't had to - it hasn't been about them. :/ #dtk12chat
Agreed on the depth and the challenge, but it’s a challenging, organic challenge that Ss can engage in no matter their “level.” Reading on grade level isn’t a prerequisite for empathy, reflection & action. Why I love DT in school. #dtk12chat
In my credential program (‘93) I was told human connection didn’t matter. I’ve argued about this with educators in the past. Good to see this has shifted/is shifting. #DTK12CHAT
Success & Innovation Center at Mt Blue Campus #dtk12chathttps://t.co/yJI7FLSNYS my new gig at the same public high school I've taught in for 20 years thx to @GearUpME grant
A3: I think it's more critical with this generation that we make learning authentic and connected to the hyper-connected world they live in. These Ss know about what's going on in the world, see kids their age doing amazing things, and desire to make an impact. #dtk12chat
"good job" = evaluative and empty...like grades. "I see you struggled with ... X. Can you tell me how you worked through it?" is feedback. Substantive and probing. #dtk12chat
Truth! They have had education done on them. We have to change the system #dtk12chat That is why I find DT so empowering as an instructor. Our S are struggling with our new method. But I know it is worth it in the end #dtk12chat
Gotta run! Thx to @BryanLakatos@Ed_by_design for such an awesome back to school #dtk12chat Have a great week all. Remember to follow new folks you met tonight. Cheers!
A6. I find that making the curriculum more transparent and allow students some space for co-designing the learning engages students as designers. Having students develop their own rubrics and best practices (5th grade +) can create more ownership #dtk12chat
In my credential program (‘93) I was told human connection didn’t matter. I’ve argued about this with educators in the past. Good to see this has shifted/is shifting. #DTK12CHAT
#dtk12chat Thank you for allowing me to share tonight! Glad to be part of this chat. Leave you with some of our other speakers that we have had at North White (IN).
Hmmmm good one. My approach is more about values. There is often a confusion or a conflict when there is a values mismatch. I saw a interesting exercise... Write for as long as you can to finish ´I am a person who....' That is the inner story other people interact w/ #dtk12chat
And we are gone...GIF battle anyone? 80s movie theme? Thanks to @lndeutsch for getting me in touch with @BryanLakatos . Great team work to bring this first #dtk12chat together. Lotta fun and deep reflection (as deep as Twitter allows).
Is human connection really most things these days? #dtk12chat I tell S life is not about how much you know but more about who you know that can help you
Q6: When we create real world challenges for our Ss, are the challenges from their real world or ours? Ss will solve problems with great passion if they are relevant to them. Concede that your project design may not include their input. #dtk12chat
