Q0: Welcome to #MinecraftEDU Chat! Please introduce yourself: Name, Role, Current Coordinates and current definition of Game-based Learning? #MinecraftEDU
Good Morning, Good Evening all you Miners, Crafters and Creepers and thanks for joining us on Tonight's #MinecraftEDU Chat. I am joining briefly from @Bett_show in London, its 1 am here. Super excited for the chat and conference
Good Evening Minecraftians! #MinecraftEdu Garrett Z here. I am a Minecraft Mentor, Master Trainer, and GBL Expert. I define GBL as using a True Game to effect and empower learning. (as opposed to just using game elements to motivate learning)
Mark G, Educator and co-founder of the chat along w/ Mr. @PBJellyGames Definition is using games as teachable moments. And the next step is designing games to express learning. #MinecraftEDU
Agree 100% "true game" must be in GBL definition. I think engagement is also a word to be used, as that is the main point; to engage students in learning. #MinecraftEDU
A0 - Hi All from Canada, otherwise known as 0 0 0. #GBL for me is "Any proactive use of games for the purpose of learning skills useful outside of that game." #MinecraftEDU
Well TBH I use the term "True" as an attachment, mainly to enforce the fact that what is a game is defined in a lot of research. #MinecraftEDU
But new to GBL / Gamification folks aren't yet aware.
Stakeholder buy-in is essential. I have gained overwhelming support fro parents and admins by being transparent and exposing them to learning opportunities through games, both observationally and first-hand! #MinecraftEDU
If I may Chris, I think the point Ivan may be trying to make is that outside of class kids are still learning via games. Can we call this GBL? In it's truest meaning? #MinecraftEDU
Q0~ MinecraftingDAD back again. I am a Minecraft content creator, Philadlelphia, PA. I define game-based learning as games that provide positive play environments with ways to teach new skills outside the game #MinecraftEDU
A1: Noa, #digitalliteracy T, from 32°04'52.1"N 34°48'24.0"E. Current def of #gbl is very vague, since you can't define something using the same terms. Learning is a process of gaining knowledge and / or skills. But it's VERY hard for me to define "game". #minecraftEDU
Q1~ What is some of the common language around games in education that you've seen cause confusion? How can we best overcome these breakdowns? #MinecraftEdu

I believe one part of that definition is that games need to be voluntary. I don't have my copy of Reality is Broken by @avantgame handy, but that is how we need to get buy-in in schools, voluntary learning. Not complacent. #MinecraftEDU
In reply to
@PBJellyGames, @WiseDad_Games, @avantgame
@WiseDad_Games I'll urge caution on saying it will fail. For example PBL with #MinecraftEdu AND even Gamification have shown positive increases in learning. But they're not #GBL and I would argue that GBL shows greater benefits.
Yep! As you absolutely should! Of course you can blame me for forcing you outside the box a bit. Not too much though... that's far enough! #MinecraftEDU :D

@c_johnson007, @WiseDad_Games, @ABCmouse
Hey MCDad! Great to have you back! Love the definition, especially "positive play environment" and "Outside the game" Any tips on transferring skills from in game to out? #MinecraftEDU
That is one of the most widely accepted pieces of the definition of GAMES - Voluntary! So how do we make class have that same voluntary appeal? Via good GBL design. #MinecraftEDU
Hello Aliff! Welcome to the chat! Absolutely correct in definition IMHO! It is about using the GAME to achieve the learning obj. Great answer #MinecraftEdu
Q1: Most parents don't make the correlation that games based on fun such as Minecraft could also be used as education tools, maybe we need more mainstream support to show how it can be used. #MinecraftEdu
A1: Good Q! I hear often that #MinecraftEdu is far too much 'play time' but playtime for some is learning and accessing the world in which they feel comfortable within to show and share there learning and understanding
Q1~ What is some of the common language around games in education that you've seen cause confusion? How can we best overcome these breakdowns? #MinecraftEdu
Hey Noa, definition of a game, in a nutshell, has 4 components: Goals, Rules, Feedback System and Voluntary. I derived this from @avantgame seminal book Reality is Broken. FOund this pdf: https://t.co/ms3ZPkzKXy#MinecraftEDU
A1 GBL vs gamification vs PBL vs student choice are all terms that need to be clarified and defined. They all have their place in effective course design but serve a different purpose #MinecraftEdu
A1 - Acronyms in Games That Cause Confusion Volume 1 or AGTCCVI for short: "Noob" - it sounds dirty but isn't. "#GBL" - Games Based what? Don't forget the learning! "#PBL" - Project Passion Puzzle Problem... I could go on! #MinecraftEDU
A1 - The biggest hangups I find that many have, not just Ts. Is the difference between using #MinecraftEDU as a Tool (PBL, Design, Creation) vs. as a game (Survival, Mechanics, Adventure, NPCs, Quests Etc).
A1: I think to overcome these breakdowns we need to provide the voice in which indicates that #GBL#MinecraftEdu is valuable and meaningful learning in a discovery / inquiry based approach! #Share#Craft and #Collaborate w/ others so they can see the value we see!
Q1: What is some of the common language around games in education that you’ve seen cause confusion? How can we best overcome these breakdowns? #MinecraftEDU
A1 - So to avoid breakdowns I think the best thing to do is to engage in these types of conversations. Engage with peers, academics, and experts. Even more ASK Why something is defined as such. Go deep to the roots #MinecraftEDU
A1 - The biggest hangups I find that many have, not just Ts. Is the difference between using #MinecraftEDU as a Tool (PBL, Design, Creation) vs. as a game (Survival, Mechanics, Adventure, NPCs, Quests Etc).
Q2: What practices do you regularly participate in to gain content specific knowledge to drive pedagogy when working with games like Minecraft? How do you apply these to the classroom? #MinecraftEDU

A1 CTD - As an example - to understand the definition of #GBL when I first started to research it, I went deeper into understanding WHAT IS a GAME. the definition of GAME is integral to the definition of GBL. #MinecraftEdu

A2: Co-creation w/ Ss, taking a step back and becoming the learner from my Ss! Tweetmeets and lots of personal reading and PD that works within my timelines and busy schedules help too! #MinecraftEdu
Q2: What practices do you regularly participate in to gain content specific knowledge to drive pedagogy when working with games like Minecraft? How do you apply these to the classroom? #MinecraftEdu
A2 Student ideas an input is key. They play the games a lot more than we do so their ideas on what would make a good Minecraft project are key #MinecraftEdu
A2 - I love building engaging lessons that teachers can bury large amounts of curriculum in. I read the news and Twitter for hours it seems. Then for example... I have a #Minecraft lesson on the new Russia/USA joint Space Station evolve from that. Reading Rules! #MinecraftEdu
A2: Training is good, connecting with others is better, but sometimes it's best to play and see what's possible. Also when it's a game as open as #MinecraftEDU where it's open to most content, you really just have to see what the learning needs are and get them game ready.
The most valid point of the night so far! Definitions help us know what others are talking about. Going to this point, we need to be careful not to poo poo others definitions, they could be doing the same thing, just defining it diff. #MinecraftEDU
Agreed! Working hard on that! Want my game to actually TEACH Ss, not just 4 motivation to do the "old" task. @iLearningUK has been helping me with that. 1st task in my Jungle game: Go meet the jungle teen media stars and interview them 2 find pros & cons of being 1. #minecraftedu

@PBJellyGames, @WiseDad_Games, @MGrundel, @avantgame, @iLearningUK
Totally agree! We have been dabbling in my board for a bit now! What I do not appreciate is Ts taking credit for Ss work within #MinecraftEdu we should never do this...I seen it far too often and have trouble looking people in the eye #disrepectful#disgraceful
#MinecraftEdu It's not just about convincing others tho. It's about - as we'll seen in a upcomming Q - developing strong affinity groups, and supporting good research and best practice.
A1: People seem to have issues when you say students are 'playing' as though that means they col;dn’t possibly be learning. A lot is just changing that mindset. #MinecraftEDU
Yeesh! YES this troubles me greatly! #MinecraftEdu It's also an issue for me when Ts craft basic exercises in #MinecraftEdu that have Ss build for hours. We need to do work in the game as Ts as well. Cannot just tell Ss to build XYZ as learning.
Q3~ Often, it's academic researchers who evolve terms, but how can we, or do we, involve students in the formation of common language around game-based learning lessons and projects? #MinecraftEdu

Thing is, I'm a very TLDR person. Lucky @MatthewFarber can teach me himself 280 characters at a time! Bonus: don't have to pay for shipping to Israel. :-) #MinecraftEDU

This is for you to research! #MinecraftEDU I strongly reccomend that ANY teacher looking to use GBL should have read @avantgame 's James PaulGee's definition, and more.
A2 : learn from experts through tweetmeet like this, read related article, and the most common thing is youtube-ing. Its help me design my content and pedagogy #MinecraftEDU
A3: Great Q! Why not create a #Onedrive#Cloudbased#OneNote that is Co-created alongside Ss? Get the experts to add the information in that they think is important for people to know! Darn....I will be making now! Never going to get these report cards done #MinecraftEdu

If you really want the cognitive science/learning principles behind learning with video games, Gee's "What Video Games Have To Teach Us About Learning And Language" is the one. #MinecraftEDU
A3 - I'll refer back to @BBTNB 's response here in A1. It's not enough to know academic terms, not if we want to meet kids where they are! Do we know enough of the game vocabulary to reach kids where they are? to understand what they're talking about? #MinecraftEDU
Q3 - Just as teachers grade papers and assignments. The game based learning tools should request feedback at the end of the gaming session. Ask questions like, how can we make it more fun? How can we make it better? Kids will gladly give feedback. #MinecraftEdu
A3 We need to meet in the middle; teachers should teach students relevant academic language but we need to take their knowledge of games into account when developing lessons #MinecraftEdu
#MinecraftEdu It's not just about convincing others tho. It's about - as we'll seen in a upcomming Q - developing strong affinity groups, and supporting good research and best practice.
A3 - I'm terrified to involve students in the formation and creation and understanding of common language around #GBL! Have you seen what they did to texting! TTYL BRB LOL Seriously! Leave #GBL Alone :) #MinecraftEDU
When I watch James Paul Gee (isn't he on twitter?) I feel like a freshman in Uni. Always taking notes, which I never do. Then I translate everything to Hebrew for my FB group of Ts, more than 1.500 Ts interested in games and learning. https://t.co/t4vbJAs1ve#MinecraftEdu

Great idea! I've had students start suggesting ideas for Minecraft activities now that we have done a few. I didn't use the most recent suggestion but we did a whole project based on one of their ideas this winter #MinecraftEdu

THIS IS AN important Question! As it's what we all are when we use common language to achieve common goals of teaching Ss. Language can be important. IMHO. Though I would love experts like: @MatthewFarber@BronSt to share their thoughts #MinecraftEDU

My interest in #MinecraftEDU involves learning how to create these tools. I can hopefully move from a content creator and parent and use my experience with Minecraft to help make some future tools. That is my goal.
HAHAHAH! Love that answer! Doing it in survival, adds most of the things that make it a game. It becomes more immersive, and challenging. But there are other ways too. #MinecraftEdu

A1: #GBL and #gamification, Elements and Mechanics. It's especially hard to get the fine print while translating to Hebrew. Here's my two cents: #minecraftEDU
A4 Not yet. Minecraft is still a pretty new and limited tool in our curriculum. My hope is that it develops over time as use within the classroom increases #MinecraftEdu
A4: This is something I can totally comment on! And my answer is yes! I see tons of groups form between the players over common interests. @PBJellyGames had these awesome "personality type" cards that showed this perfectly! And Ss in those groups bonded really well! #minecraftedu
Q4: Great question!!! We actually had a Lunch & Learn with our team in our #MinecraftEdu Lab @MontourSD to review common languages within the game. We thought it was important for relationship building w/ our kiddos. Covey: Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

#MinecraftEDU BRILLIANT Description of WHY we need to focus on common language with Ss, Ps, and other Ts. Well said and I'm happy to hear that @JustinAglio

I usually give them a start in creative but we spend a lot of time using the game as a simulation. For example, we use the game as a simulation of life on a medieval manor #MinecraftEdu

A5 - For me my #MinecraftEdu and #Games language all started because I was a Gamer, but I've also found lots of value in Ts watching Youtube, Speaking with Academics / Experts, and Playing with their Ss / Kids.
Q5: These chats are my go to place to improve my teaching skills. I don't have any specific places aside from good ol fashioned google! #MinecraftEdu (though most of what i do isn't along a curriculum)
A5 I encourage Ts to watch some #Minecraft videos on Youtube as these are GREAT for understanding both the language, and the Game Capabilities (therefore helping us find authentic ways to teach with it.) #MinecraftEDU

OK Well lets wrap up the #MinecraftEDU Chat with an outro!
Outro: Name, Role, Location - Please share your most significant learning or favorite tweet of the #MinecraftEDU Chat
@YouTube is such a fantastic source of knowledge! You can see trial an error, follow steps, and learn so many things. Seeing language used by the players helps build a great understanding of it! #MinecraftEdu
A5: Following these Twitter chats, YouTube is a great resource, and my students are so much more knowledgeable than I and they ❤ to share #MinecraftEdu
Check out our teacher's lab journal and sample lessons for a preview of how Sciencce teachers can use the Chemistry Resource Pack in the classroom. Coming to all users next month! #MinecraftEDU#MicrosoftEdu#edtechhttps://t.co/zDCKuQmxbk
A6 Chris from ROWVA; my big takeaway is that we need to keep working with students to make GBL significant for students and relevant to the classroom. #MinecraftEdu
The Chemistry Update introduces four crafting stations to #MinecraftEdu, allowing players to build elements from subatomic particles and compounds from elements. The possibilities are endless! #MicrosoftEdu#edtechhttps://t.co/88eyuBMQOM
