#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Hey all! Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 6/7 US History I&II and am the founder of #waledchat (Thurs @ 9pm ET) and #Edusations (Youtube). Thrilled to be here! #learnlap
Hi Colin & Melissa! I'm Paul Solarz, a 4th grade teacher and author of #LearnLAP from Arlington Heights, Illinois. Thanks so much for moderating tonight!!!
Hi I'm Karen from the Gold Coast Qld 🇦🇺 I'm a Grade 4 teacher, coach and Beginning Teacher Mentor. I also host the #TLAPdownunder chat. Happy to be able to join in while on summer break. ☀️ #LearnLAP
Hi all! Melissa from Nebraska, 11-12 ELA.
Usually I'm hosting #games4ed at 8pmET on Thursdays, but tonight I get to help guide the reins of #learnlap!! Very stoked!
Loving your tweets this past week John! Keep those great ideas for WeVideo coming!
Hey #LearnLAP folks - check out John's Twitter feed (especially 12/13) - so many fun video ideas!!!
thank you Paul! I appreciate the retweets. Im a little obsessed with video creation lately. If folks are curious about student video creation with WeVideo my personal YouTube channel is here: https://t.co/V7BnlEduJw#LearnLAP
A1: students need check in points for them to stop and see where they are in comparison to what is being asked of them. I like reflection at the end of projects as a way for personal growth but instructor feedback to better serve students.
#LearnLAP
Have them grade their work, think about what they got correct and wrong. What does this indicate about their understanding of a particular topic? How can this influence their future studying?
I’ve written a bit about this here:
https://t.co/XYLENXBlK0#LearnLAP
A1: Being intentional about building in enough time for reflection - it shouldn’t be rushed! Having students reflect on their mastery daily through the use of a mastery tracker. Modeling reflection as a teacher (and making changes so Ss see the purpose!). #learnlap
A1: I have students reflect digitally each week with a "high" and a "low" By doing this, I've learned that there have been issues within small group pairings that I wouldn't have known about because of me teaching in my small group during the same time #LearnLAP
A1: One of the most important things we can do is provide Ss with TIME to reflect. Reflection is an integral part of the inquiry cycle, yet far too often it gets neglected in a push to "fit more in." We are actually accomplishing much less when we neglect reflection. #LearnLAP
A1: Gotta say @sowntogrow made my ability to have students reflect seamlessly. I have students reflect after every graded assignment. They analyze their errors and make a plan for improvement. #LearnLAP
A1: As a history teacher, what we have previously learned continues to affect us. As I ask students to draw on a previous lesson or unit, they are bound to reflect on what/how they learned it. #learnlap
A1 To have Ss thinking about thinking using sentence stems is a great way to get them to consider, reflect & then articulate their thinking about their learning #LearnLAP
A1 - We have formal & informal reflections, depending on the activity.
- Formal: https://t.co/8ytcAnSQZn
- Informal: (see attached image)
We also reflect on our goals, on our daily behavior, effort, etc.
#LearnLAP
A1: Have a weekly opportunity for students to reflect on a piece of work they have completed for class. What went well? Why are they proud of it?, etc. What did they learn? #LearnLAP
A1: reflecting on learning - before DURING after the learning. Yes! Video creation is great for this because 1. loads of decisions to make about how to express an idea 2. instant feedback on how you (the S) are doing (what you look like sound like etc. 3. shareable
#learnlap
A1: students tracking their own progress towards goals. Academically I plan to meet with every 3-5 grader in January so they can tell me where they are. #LearnLAP
A1 - Repetitions of learning. We do some kind of reflective activity every day. Whether it’s cold calling questions or a daily activity or even a game. Kids learn by doing and being interested in class. #LearnLAP
A1: in the art room when they ask me if “they’re work is complete” I turn it back on them and say “you tell me”. My answer is great and all but I want them to self reflect on if they gave their all, can they add more, as one day my answer won’t be there #LearnLAP
A1b - students must know “why” reflection is important. It’s not okay to just present information and expect kids to understand and master it. #LearnLAP
A1: We promote a culture of reflection by ensuring clarity of learning & that students know what the need to do to succeed, & ensuring students have time to use this to identify what they've done well & where they need to improve. Then set goals for themselves. #LearnLAP
I agree and feel grateful that in my class I can always find time (or make it). However, in talking with math teachers, I find that they feel constrained bc their content is so rushed/packed. How do we shift the culture? Our Ss need it. #learnlap
A1: At the end of major papers/projects, my Ss reflect on the standards and how well they met them. Only then do I share my own feedback. Then we discuss what their next goals are. #LearnLAP
A1: As a practice, I like to consider the questions to ask encourage thoughtful self-reflection and dialogue between the students. As a protocol, it’s important to stop for reflection during the learning. #LearnLAP
Have them grade their work, think about what they got correct and wrong. What does this indicate about their understanding of a particular topic? How can this influence their future studying?
I’ve written a bit about this here:
https://t.co/XYLENXBlK0#LearnLAP
I forget sometimes how much we have to model over and over again for Ss. This is my weakness a high school T. They get so many different inputs. I forget they need a lot of repetition for it to stick. #LearnLAP
Yes! And it's especially good if they can actually 'see' where they are. Are use all their senses to self evaluate. You can tell this kid has practiced & improved her comm skills. #LearnLAP
A1- anytime you have to really explain the WHY you do something, along with the what to a genuine audience - real peer or near peer mentoring. And I agree that purposeful, timely reflection is key. #LearnLAP
A1c - Showing students the importance of listening is also a key to being successful. Reflection at its core is grounded in being attentive and aware of how we can improve and why it’s important. #LearnLAP
A1b Within every lesson I always include different moments at the beginning, during & at the end for Ss to tap into what they are thinking about their learning
A great strategy I have used is to spotlight students' thinking about their learning & ask them to share
#LearnLAP
A1: Gotta say @sowntogrow made my ability to have students reflect seamlessly. I have students reflect after every graded assignment. They analyze their errors and make a plan for improvement. #LearnLAP
A1: One of the most important things we can do is provide Ss with TIME to reflect. Reflection is an integral part of the inquiry cycle, yet far too often it gets neglected in a push to "fit more in." We are actually accomplishing much less when we neglect reflection. #LearnLAP
Agree that self assessment of mastery is HUGE! Way more important than our feedback. Equally important is helping kids reflect on their process - what went well, what they would improve, what they’d do differently. #learnlap
A1: I love giving them a Google Form to fill out about the activities, what they liked, learned, etc. Gives me data as pretty graphs too. Just waiting for “all pink” add on feature in Google Forms. Opening up a store. Just pirate and science stuff #sevinskyshenanigans#LearnLAP
It’s a tough balance. Some people commit to posting one a week or once every other week.
That doesn’t work for me...the deadline takes the fun out of it.
I simply blog when I’m inspired...may be twice a week or once a month.
#LearnLAP
A2 A high quality reflection is when you can see that Ss have engaged in different thinking strategies to articulate & communicate their learning #LearnLAP
I agree that a culture shift is needed, Jennifer! We need to remember quality over quantity. One can pack tons in and students can comply and memorize...but that is far different from true learning. #learnLAP
A2 - A high quality reflection gets students to think about & evaluate their process, synthesize new learning with prior knowledge, and results in more permanent understanding.
#LearnLAP
A1 To have Ss thinking about thinking using sentence stems is a great way to get them to consider, reflect & then articulate their thinking about their learning #LearnLAP
A1: some activities are highly reflective in themselves. Creative activities tend to be like this. It's a powerful framework and allows reflection to happy a bit more naturally. Encourge self exploration. Self understanding. Context. Connection #learnlap
I’m in MS but used to work with college Ss. I struggle with this, too! I think it has to do with the fact that they’re in 6-8 diff classes with 6-8 diff procedures. It’d be awesome if ind. schools could teach a set of reflection practices to be used in every class #learnlap
One succes I have found for students to reflect on their learning is by offering constructive and actionable feedback on their work. It helps them see both their strengths and areas for improvement. #LearnLAP
I do all I can to reduce the power that grades hold over students, a power that often prevents them from doing their best work. Students self-report their grades based on my feedback + their own self-reflection (sometimes with me face-to-face). This demystifies grading. #LearnLAP
A1b - for performance groups like our daily streaming announcements show, we have agreed upon norms that a norm checker evaluates and presents each day. We take what they say under consideration, get context and strategize for how to do it again or make needed changes. #LearnLAP
A1 I have a learning journal that students use to create MP goals. Every Friday they reflect on their progress towards our goal. It is a routine, and they remind me if I forget. #LearnLAP
Erik, this is exactly what I aim for, too. I tell the students it's as much for me....tell me what I need to do to help you learn and reach your next reading/writing goals #learnlap
It's important that we making the thinking visible to all in every area of learning by incorporating thinking routines in every lesson #learnLAPhttps://t.co/UVIgZSJj4g
I view this as incredibly important for my middle schoolers who always want to know the "why!" If they're not able to provide a why, what have they really retained throughout a lesson or unit? #JustThinkingAloud#LearnLAP
So true. It is so hard to get people to agree to do something alike but it is so powerful for students. I am hoping interactive notebooks could be something we do building wide one day. I dream a lot #LearnLAP
Agree 100%! The fact is that this is not how math (and other subjects) is taught in our country. I’d love to see it change! My Ss do amazing work (I teach CS) and they find so much meaning in the work we do... just wish it were in every classroom! #learnlap
A2: In high quality reflections, we thoughtfully consider the world around us along with our own experiences. We evaluate our strengths and weaknesses in order to grow and learn—both academically and personally. #LearnLAP
Love this method and totally agree. I wish there was more time in the day for more face to face conferences, but alas...there never is to do as much as I would like :) #learnlap
your wording is my wording! LOVE!! With my students with special needs though, I almost feel as though they don't always believe me that I'm being 100+% honest with them when I say I want to know how I can help you! #LearnLAP
I think I may have to give myself a deadline. I get inspired but I get wrapped up in other stuff and never write. I started posting every day on twitter. Have an alarm to remind me. It is helping me find something to tweet about and do it. #LearnLAP
A2: meaningful to the student, not just to the teacher. Addresses the outcome, but focuses on the process. Highlights successes and areas for growth. #learnlap
A3 Students can reflect on their reflection. If it’s poorly done, why? Do they not see the connection between the original task and their current and future experiences? Maybe more discussion is necessary. #LearnLAP
A3: Disagree. Students must learn the process of writing a good reflection and that may start with writing some poor reflections first. They just aren’t there...yet. #learnLAP
Q3: I don’t think of it as a waste of time but instead as an opportunity to reteach and build trust. Then have student reflect again, possibly using a rubric. #LearnLAP
A3a: No! If every student is writing a poor reflection, that’s information for me. I need to provide better instruction in writing reflections. #LearnLAP
A3: nothing is a waste of time as long as you use it to learn and grow. That example, a bad student reflection, is the perfect teaching opportunity right at your fingertips! #LearnLAP
A3: Disagree. It's an opportunity to improve. I see poor reflections as either a) they aren't convinced it will help, or b) they don't have time.
We can help them improve by being consistent, responding to their reflections, and giving them time to reflect #LearnLAP
A3: Disagree. It gives the teacher the opportunity to reflect on why the student’s reflection was poor, and reshape the process to better meet their learning needs. #learnlap
A3 Disagree
Even if the written product is not what you want, the thoughts can be there . I have several students who have trouble putting their thoughts into words, so I have them spend at least 1 full minute thinking before they pick up a pencil. #LearnLAP
When we talk about reflection at @Skyline_WC, the peer writing center I direct, we talk about reflection being metacognitive, a link between theory + practice, a way to have conversations around problems of practice + an essential part of our commitment to equity. #LearnLAP
A3:
Reflection is never a waste of time. I believe proper reflection is a process and needs practice. Even ineffective reflection is still practice at effective reflection.
#learnlap
A3: well first question is why are they writing poor reflections? Have they been taught how to properly reflect? A poor reflection is an opportunity to come together and come to an understanding from varying perspectives.
#LearnLAP
A3:
If Ss are writing "poor reflections," we need to dig deeper to uncover WHY.
Have we modeled reflective thinking?
Have we provided thought-provoking questions and/or sentence stems?
And: have we provided learning opportunities worthy of reflection?
#LearnLAP
Q3: Agree or disagree?
“When students write poor reflections, this process is a waste of time.”
A3: if the framework is valid - we shouldn't worry about quality. It's school after all. Learning you know? Reflection is hard - even for grownups!
#learnlap#growthmindset
A3 - Not necessarily, but if you don't stress the value of true reflection to your students, they won't get as much out of it as they would if you did. Reflection can be POWERFUL when the value is understood!
Great blog post by @langwitches: https://t.co/U1wQSBbZ3C#LearnLAP
A3: Disagree! It means I, as the teacher, didn't meet their need of learning and instead...my instruction was a "waste of their time" because I didn't provide a "WHY" as @Shapiro_WTHS continues to talk about tonight! Poor reflections help me restructure! #LearnLAP
A3b: If it’s one or two students, then I may need to gather more information from that student about their reflection before making a judgment. Do they understand the content enough to make a reflection? Do they understand their success criteria? #LearnLAP
A3. Disagree, Some Ss aren't master's at putting things in writing and can verballize their thinking better! Different methods make work better for different Ss! #learnlap
A3 - 100 percent disagree!!! It’s about the process and practice. Most educators don’t reflect all the time. Students need to see what and how it’s done. Nothing that guides learning is a waste. #LearnLAP
A3 We need to give Ss many opportunities & different opportunities to articulate their learning-we need to differentiate-a Ss reflection should not be a reflection of them as learner it's a reflection of learning in the moment-we need to think of other ways to write #learnlap
Yes yes yes to this. Many Ss have never had the opportunity to reflect. Or felt that someone would listen. With time and consistency, they can get there! #LearnLAP
A3: Disagree. Students must learn the process of writing a good reflection and that may start with writing some poor reflections first. They just aren’t there...yet. #learnLAP
YES YES YES! Google Classroom could absolutely work in a similar way! #LearnLAP The reflection also helped other students agree/disagree with their peers' responses.
A3: Disagree. Some Ss need to be guided on how to write a well-thought out reflection. Your class might be the 1st they have ever done it. Praise them for their work, and help them learn to improve their skill. Sometimes your common sense is not common sense to others. #learnlap
A3: Disagree. Think any reflection is good. Got to start somewhere. Also just because they don’t write down doesn’t mean it didn’t go on in their heads. #Learnlap
A3: Disagree. Anything done poorly informs us of what students need more modeling, instruction, support, practise, time, etc in order to do well. We need to find out why they reflect poorly and take action to correct it. #LearnLAP
A3- a waste of whose time? It's certainly a waste of students' time if you don't teach them how to do it, or give them enough time to do it well :) #LearnLAP
A3: Disagree. Reflection is a critical aspect of the learning process. It gives the teacher an opportunity to assess student progress as well as give students and opportunity to improve upon their learning. We must be the ones to model how important it is. #learnlap
Hey #learnlap! Here’s a creative student voice project the includes many skills and is great for January! Hope it can help students reflect on 2018 and look forward to 2019!
You are so right. I don't worry about quality but I do want my students to learn a process well so that they get really good at reflecting. I think it is one of the main skill sets that will help them have a great life. #LearnLAP
It can be tricky! I've seen folks do a certain amount per assignment where every student would have a face-to-face conference once over the course of a term. I also presented on face-to-face grading at this year's NCTE conference! #LearnLAPhttps://t.co/CDQgtDtMWj
A3 This scenario seems like a great time for a private conversation to begin between a Teacher/Guide & Student(s) who are learning to become better metacognitive (reflective) thinkers. #learnlap
A3: well first question is why are they writing poor reflections? Have they been taught how to properly reflect? A poor reflection is an opportunity to come together and come to an understanding from varying perspectives.
#LearnLAP
A3b If a Ss' reflections are poor in writing maybe it's up to us to model/demonstrate what reflections look & sound like - let's scaffold the learning to ensure that Ss know & understand the importance of tapping into metacognition #learnlap
This topic is incredibly important! Reflection, both for students and teachers (leaders) is how we see what next steps are necessary for mastery and growth. It’s why giving a test and then just moving on defeats a large part of many learning goals. #LearnLAP
A4: Give students examples. Even the good examples can be improved. Ask students for their input on how an example can be improved. This way it shows them a process. (Obviously leave the Ss example anonymous). #learnlap
And if you're around Twitter tomorrow evening, please join @MrsAsztalos for #5thchat which she's moderating tomorrow at 7pm Central. All grades welcome!
TOPIC: "Reflection & Gratitude"
A3: I would say most Ts would agree w/this statement. I think it is because we think learning is happening only if we are telling Ss something or Ss are doing something. Dewey's quote is so relevant here. How do we change this in education? #LearnLAP
A4 Reflect aloud. We have to model the reflection process and show students it’s important, purposeful, and the difference between “done” and “YES! — High fives — What’s next?” #LearnLAP
A4 modeling and giving purpose
If you are giving time in class, explain the why and what you are looking for. Reflection is not a natural process, but it can certainly be taught and fostered with time and attention. #LearnLAP
A4 - List below.
1. Start small
2. Model great work
3. Allow for practice
4. Always positive
5. Redo the same ideas
6. Have goals that are challenging but attainable
7. Thank students
8. Ask them for feedback
#teachpos#LearnLAP
I think finding a way to respond to student feedback is important, such as what is available in @sowntogrow. Repetition and practice with consistency are also important. I’m not sure those are teaching strategies, though. 🤔 #learnLAP
Asking students to critique an example, awesome! At times I feel as though a critique of a ready made example is more helpful to Ss than a teacher sample in the moment. #LearnLAP
A4:
As with many things: model, model model!
Share student-created exemplars.
Provide thought-provoking questions and/or sentence stems.
Most importantly, provide learning opportunities worthy of reflection.
💖🌟💖
#LearnLAP
A4: I like to pose the prompt "What's best? What's next?" to students. Reflect on what you're proud of, reflect on what you want to improve on next. Plus, that guides my teaching and the lessons I need to hit #LearnLAP
A4 - From simple tips like the graphic attached to sentence starters to specific questions to recording reflections on video to teaching students to be metacognitive & providing time for them to reflect without prompting can all help students get better at reflecting.
#LearnLAP
A4 - sounding like a broken record - but why write them? why not make videos? Or rather - write for the purpose of making a video. It actually changes the process massively (also makes it fun, relevant, etc.). And of course the video itself becomes a rich reflection. #learnlap
A4: Start by telling them WHY they are reflecting. We do this at the very beginning of the year by discussing research on how much better we retain info when we reflect on learning. Then, add small daily practice- I use the mastery tracker pictured. #learnlap
Q4- clear expectations/norms create a better sense of how they are measuring their performance. "Segments appear rehearsed" or "good leaders need good followers and good followers need good leaders" help frame reflections. Also, practice and feedback of course! #LearnLAP
A4: Think aloud; questioning; modeling; deconstructing WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) so students have clarity; timely peer & teacher feedback (we use Tickled Pink & Green for Growth); goal setting. #LearnLAP
Helping students see possibilities is a significant part of improving reflective practice, which might mean ensuring that they can act on those reflections. Often reflections are poor quality because they're assignment autopsies. Reflections aren't just for the end! #LearnLAP
Especially when writing is involved, I'm always shocked when Ts don't model. Modeling is such an easy accommodation that can assist such a diverse group of Ss. #LearnLAP
The magical answer! It's so hard for students to know what to do if they can't see or hear what a good reflection sounds like or what the process is for you to write it #LearnLAP
A4:
As with many things: model, model model!
Share student-created exemplars.
Provide thought-provoking questions and/or sentence stems.
Most importantly, provide learning opportunities worthy of reflection.
💖🌟💖
#LearnLAP
A4 cont: it’s also important to build in reflection at the end of every major project... and then bring what they’ve learned into what they’re doing next. #learnlap
A4 Journalling, blogging, reflection, prompts, sentence stems, paragraph scaffolds, class diaries ......
Amplifying students' reflections through apps e.g @Flipgrid
If we want to improve the quality then we need to show them what this can look/sound/feel like ....
#learnlap
A4:
#Metacognition Strategy = Being SPECIFIC!
For Ts, being specific with their FEEDBACK.
For Ss, reflecting more deeply HOW to raise their reflection quality.
Here, a lesson plan & poster for a reminder:
https://t.co/oX7zYK1szB#LearnLAP
A4 conti: Also give students praise for any LITTLE THING that they did correctly on their reflection. Even if it is not ideal...it will give them confidence and they will move in the right direction. #learnlap
So true.
Reflections aren't just for the end. Especially for longer activities and projects, we should be building in reflection opportunities!
#LearnLAP
Helping students see possibilities is a significant part of improving reflective practice, which might mean ensuring that they can act on those reflections. Often reflections are poor quality because they're assignment autopsies. Reflections aren't just for the end! #LearnLAP
A4: some can include but aren’t limited to...modeling, scaffolding, giving guided prompts, peer support...there’s no one size fits all approach and think it’s more about meeting the student where they are at in the reflection learning process. #LearnLAP
AHHH!!! This is somewhat I say to my students. I am getting this poster. Thanks for the share. I love it when people have created good stuff that I can use!! #LearnLAP
A4: model metacognition with our own reflective practices. practice with them on their own, provide good examples, give them time to reflect and revisit, sit with them and help them communicate their thoughts. This should be a list like @Shapiro_WTHS always does! #LearnLAP
AHHH!!! This is somewhat I say to my students. I am getting this poster. Thanks for the share. I love it when people have created good stuff that I can use!! #LearnLAP
I love PBL. Reflection is a key element in it according to @BIEpbl. It was an element I was horrible at for most of my career. Have focused on it a lot the last three years. I now know how to make it ongoing in a PBL thanks to BIE. #LearnLAP
A4b- reflections aren't just for the list of things you could do better. It's so important to celebrate successes big and small and be metacognitive about doing something well so you can do it again! How did you have that success? How can you repeat it? #LearnLAP
Here’s HOW I got students to think about their learning & future, #learnlap: not Best Work portfolios, but Growth Reflection Websites! They became centerpieces for teacherless SLCs. This is a student sample with student/parent permission. #unlimitedteacherhttps://t.co/zPdHtrbP7e
Absolutely agree we need to engage Ss in different ways of reflecting on their learning to capture their thinking about their learning - leading them to a deeper level of understanding about their learning - by doing so increases participation and inclusivity #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP My name is Pamela Ward. I am administrator of an early college program in Greenville, MS. Our program is housed at Mississippi Valley State University.
Absolutely! Or if they stumbled into a success, let's raise that up and honor it and help figure out how to do it again purposefully in another context! #LearnLAP
A6: I sadly never thought about having students look back on preivous reflections but since my Ss reflect digitally, I could easily have them look back at their reflections and reflect on their reflections/progress #LearnLAP
A6: I've used Google Slides in the past, but using @sowntogrow this year. I really like that we can go back and see how Ss did on previous writings. #learnlap
A6: Students Keep track of their reflections in @sowntogrow, which allows me to respond and offer feedback on their reflections as well as reflect on MY teaching practices based on those reflections. #learnLAP
A6: I need suggestions to this question. Working on this for the first time this year and failing miserably at it. Anyone have a comprehensive list of learning strategies? I got some from self-regulated learning by Richard cash but could use more. #LearnLAP
A6b: Also super important, I think, is giving students time in class. Too often in secondary ed, Ts want to assign it as homework. But if we want good reflections, my Ss' best ones have come during classtime set aside for just reflection #LearnLAP
Sometimes I worry about how constant formal reflection hurts metacognition & excitement for learning. Some students are filling out forms after every learning experience! Let's be mindful of this & teach them to be metacognitive & love learning!
#LearnLAP
A6: There are many ways our Ss reflect, depending on the context: Google Site portfolios, process journals, @Flipgrid video reflections, reflective discussions with reading/writing partners...#LearnLAP
One of the techniques we use in #HumLit1819 is a Commonplace Book, which is a kind of thought space + metacognitive journal to keep track of thinking throughout the course. I make comments on the side with Google Docs + create dialogues with students about their work. #LearnLAP
A6: I have never really had them look on past reflections. I do spiral warm-ups from previous topics & we will discuss. In the learning support classroom we do budgets so they have a chart the complete weekly. This way they can monitor their spending and earnings. #learnLAP
IA6. I think keeping a notebook and having them take some time to go back and reread some of their reflections, and see how they have grown, changed, come up with new ideas and challenging questions and problems! #learnlap
A6: I find it highly important each yr to do a learning inventory such as Vark. Helps the kids understand how they learn best and it's a great way to reflect in future project and activities back to it.
#LearnLAP
A6: To be honest, we don't really track reflections. I think this would be a powerful process. We use @Seesaw, so Ss can look back there. I'll def look into setting up a formal tracking system. #LearnLAP
A6: By keeping student reflections (images, videos, drawing, writing, etc) in a portfolio (digital or other), Ss can go back and look at their learning over time and select items that show their growth over time. #learnlap
A6 Digital portfolios is a great way in which students in a classroom can keep track of their reflections & their learning - this year introduced @Seesaw for all students - these were used for class reflections and their portfolios were used also for S/P/T conferences - #learnlap
A6 #learnlap
We use a learning journal that I created to record all our reflections. At the end of the MP, students go back and reflect on all their work and progress.
Sometimes I worry about how constant formal reflection hurts metacognition & excitement for learning. Some students are filling out forms after every learning experience! Let's be mindful of this & teach them to be metacognitive & love learning!
#LearnLAP
A7: Technology allows for a range of choice and student voice in the reflection process. However, it can become a problem when the tool is the focus, or the final product is the focus and not the reflective process....#LearnLAP
A6 - In addition to using @sowntogrow in our classroom, students also complete #SMAARTER Goal sheets: setting goals, making plans for achieving goals & citing evidence towards those goals.
LINK: https://t.co/bfVQnOvd8m#LearnLAP
A7: If it is an online platform that they have to reflect...the conversation/discussion could continue to go way after class is over. It could hurt if the Ss start to talk about off topic information. #LearnLAP
A7:
As with any resource, technology can help when we are using it to enhance learning. It can hurt when we are using it just for the sake of using it.
We must always ask: is this what's best for kids?
https://t.co/u4aSQQEJz5#LearnLAP
Oh, lord. Now I think I missed Q5 and 6. Well. Here is A7: I think tech helps with it being a great way to not lose the work and allows for multiple ways to implement. It can hurt in the sense some Ss may not respond as well?? sorry, really can't think of a hurt #LearnLAP
A7: Help: removes barriers in terms of writing (spelling, poor handwriting, time), allows for collaborative reflection, easier to give feedback as the teacher. Hurt: there are LOADS of distractions at their fingertips that can interrupt true reflective practice #learnlap
A7: Tech is how I have encouraged student reflection. I have been able to receive more feedback from Ss because they feel more confident (sadly) behind the screen. It's hurtful for Ss who lack literacy skills and don't want to reflect due to spelling difficulties #LearnLAP
A5: Having students do exit tickets when they leave the classroom. This way they can reflect on what they have learned and/or what they are still confused on. #LearnLAP
A7 #edtech allows all students to have a voice. Recording options can capture video that can be replayed. Slides can be turned into a running records of learning. Capturing understanding, curating, and being available for future reflections are positives. #LearnLAP
A7: I think technology can help as it provided S choice in how they reflect (written, verbal, etc); & digital portfolios store & track evidence of learning. Ss are also able to provide feedback to peers. Need to ensure we use tech in an intentional, purposeful way. #LearnLAP
During this whole process, I long in to review student reflections, offer encouragement and feedback when appropriate, and use what students are thinking to reflect on my own practices for the unit and the future. #learnLAP
A5: The workshop model is an incredibly effective routine/framework as it provides share time for reflection each day. Reflection is woven throughout the minilesson and work period (especially conferring! 💗🙌💗), too. #LearnLAP
This is another important conversation about instructional design: integrating reflection into the activity in ways that don't make it seem like "something else" + an extra burden is vital. Reflection can be simple, quick + even engaging! #LearnLAP
A7 With any aspect of learning - if we know the why - the purpose of tool in the process is secondary to the learning - obviously if the tool is getting in the way - Ss haven't had enough time to play with it first #learnlap
A7 - We reflect on our learning experiences on our @Weebly ePortfolios. Students record videos that explain what they learned & their process. Then, they often synthesize the experience through specific reflection questions.

A7 Drawbacks of #edtech use for reflection is accessibility. Not everyone has an opportunity to connect at home. Another drawback is the amount of time spent on devices. We want to strike a healthy balance. #LearnLAP
We've seen similar results @sowntogrow where students are more willing to share thoughtful reflections behind the screen. Powerful results come when teachers have the one-on-ones with students about these honest reflections #learnlap
You provide so many options. And that's something I know some teachers do is allow students to use different types of media (video, written online, written hardcopy, etc.) to record their reflections. #LearnLAP
A7 #edtech allows all students to have a voice. Recording options can capture video that can be replayed. Slides can be turned into a running records of learning. Capturing understanding, curating, and being available for future reflections are positives. #LearnLAP
A8: At first, you get a lot of "I don't know". Then I model what could be the reason and they get better. I so hate the "I don't know" or shrugging shoulders by Ss. I know they are being honest but its so tiring. #LearnLAP
A8: I occasionally can't reach that one student to have them understand/see the importance and power of reflection. So they put little effort or do it jokingly. I try to discuss with them one-on-one and show them what I have to do with my job. #LearnLAP
A7. Technology can help because it's quicker, and easier to use! It can hurt if Ss try and copy parts of reflections from previous ones or share with other Ss! #learnlap
A8: The biggest barrier is making sure students have enough time and don't feel rushed in the process. We try to cram so much into the day that the reflection process often gets over-looked. #LearnLAP
A8: I think most challenges stem from Ss not having clarity of expectations. We use WALT; WILF; WAGOLL to ensure all are clear on the success criteria. Also requires a class culture of trust so Ss feel comfortable reflecting. #LearnLAP
Thanks so much to everyone who participated in this evening's #LearnLAP chat! Thanks especially to @cgilbs & @mpilakow for moderating!
#LearnLAP will be taking Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve off, so please enjoy the holiday! We'll be back on 1/7/19!
See you next year! :)
A8: Metacognition can be a challenge at first because they simply have never done it before. They are used to memorizing & moving on, rather than internalizing & learning. 😢 We can help by providing opportunities again & again for them to develop metacognitive skills. #LearnLAP

A8: Ss don’t know how to do it because they do it so rarely. Some get frustrated because it’s hard. The trick is starting small + building into their routine. I also model reflection by asking for feedback on my teaching + then asking questions to help myself improve. #learnlap
