A1 Definitely a tricky aspect w/ high school Ss sometimes but I enjoy simply laying out the path for them; they want to know where we're going, how to get there & why they need to care. Tying in a real life, relevant example has never failed to get Ss engaged for me #masterychat
A1 No spectacle or ceremony here. I just make each unit about a topic that matters to them: connecting with friends, our relationships with our neighborhoods, approaching each other with courage and love, intersecting identities, and resisting oppression. #MasteryChat
Hey Autumn! So happy to have you here... Lurking! Feel free to jump in! We would love your insight now that you are an offical #masterychat Family Member!

A1: Multisensory learning experiences... Lots of hands on activities, songs, use of technology, experiments, and food. They all love food activities for some reason. #Masterychat

a1 Inquiry learning definitely infused excitement for math. I had to buy tennis balls for my chair feet bc my Ss jumping up and down was disturbing other classes. #MasteryChat
A1 I honestly think about what would be fun and exciting for me, and if I’m not excited I can’t expect kids to be! I’m almost through #wildcard so I’ve been super inspired lately!! #Masterychat
A1: get excited about it myself, and if I’m not especially excited about the content...make it fun! Model being in awe of books, language, mathematical concepts, science, people...they’ll follow suit! #masterychat
Definitely! I also took this mindset into the end of my class too. If I had been too harsh on the class, I did something to perk them back up before I sent them out to the next teacher! I was responsible for them all day! #MasteryChat
A1- I try to give my Ss as much of voice as I can in the classroom and in their learning- alternate seating, class design, Ss generated seating arrangements, inquiry projects, tech, fun challenges and problem solving, lots of outdoor time #masterychat

A1: Teachers have to have a connection with their students.
Laugh at yourself. Let them teach you. Learn about what they enjoy.
All questions are good questions. Change your voice, no one wants to hear monotone... boring. Give projects to connect their learning. #masterychat
A1: I love to use a video clip of something related to the end product of what we are about to engage in learning. It's such a hook to pique their curiosity. Estimation180 or Dan Meyer or Career Math are a few examples. Sometimes, I use funny clips from other media. #MasteryChat

A1: We have ridiculous class chants, music blasting (blew out a speaker this week.. hope my principal isn’t reading this 😂), funny accents, and room transformations!! They come in excited for everyday 💗💗💗 #MasteryChat
A1 I try to relate the subject to their lives, interests, and/or current events. History & geography can be dry to some (or many!) but when they can see how learning SS can help them understand things that do interest them, they try harder #MasteryChat
It has completly changed my effectivness in the classroom. Showing students WHY to lean before what the content is and how to master it adds such value... AND it is WAY more fun!
My favorite part is the Community Element though. Love that everything is local #masterychat
A1: Today I purposely taught my lesson in monotone until my ss asked why...I said because that's how they were acting. They replied "Well we don't like it." So we both changed our attitudes. It was hilarious and engaging #MasteryChat

#masterychat A2: Each day Ss compete on the board...get to show off what they've learned. Also, new plan for this year....Ss will make video lessons I'll upload to my Haiku page. These will be available for next year's SS to access and use for extra help.

A2 Ooh! I have a fun one to share for this. My Ss created elevator pitches using @flipgrid to get "investors" for their genius hour project. They had to decide who in the world could help them & how they could sell their idea in 60 seconds! #MasteryChathttps://t.co/UAtGV4waOI
A2 We’ve done the @yesmagazine student writing contest. But mostly my students’ writing is very personal and they would rather keep it private & only share with me and their trusted peers and family members. #MasteryChat
A2 I remember using blogs for the first time many years ago. It was quite an adventure. I use social media as learning. I want my students to have a global audience. In Sept. Watch out! Nowak’s class is redefining global learning. #masterychat

A5: Every. Single. Day. My students work in teams based on the number and letter at the seat pick. Some students are Coaches so they lead their team daily #MasteryChat
A5: On Monday, my students worked together to break out of my room. It was a great experience, and although it was hard giving up my control, the Ss learned so much and had great things to say about it. #masterychat
A5 My Ss sit in pairs and two pairs form a team. As a team they help each other earn points by encouraging each other to follow rules, clean up, do some group assignments together, and sometimes they have to help pull up teammates who might be struggling #masterychat
Checking out early. I'll probably still browse. I've got some podcast editing to do. Busy weekend ahead so I have to work ahead. Thanks for the great conversation! #MasteryChat
A5: Teamwork is so important in school bc it carries to the real world. We collaborate thru pair share, #PBL, jigsaw projects, and when a S doesn’t know the answer we work on using “phone a friend”. #masterychat
So far in the last 2 months we have had students who have had SEVERAL students who have lost parents and siblings. Let them know that they are not the only ones who go through it. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR KIDS! They need you! #masterychat
A5: flexible seating and the option to share the work they are doing throughout the day. Problem solving together doing escape the classroom is my fav activity. #MasteryChat
A5: Silence isn’t my style. Ss learn more from each other than I could ever imagine to teach! I encourage collab in every subject! Kagan strategies are great too! We do walk ‘n talks around the black top for book discussions. #masterychat
A5 My Ss use accountable talk and collaborate all day in small group and whole group discussions during Number Talks, Close Reading, science experiments, performance tasks #MasteryChat

A5 I teach a Spanish 3/4/5 in one class period, we collab a lot, also in preparing to present at #edtech conferences, they are amazing how they prepare the presentation and work as a team #Masterychat

A5: My students collaboratefrom day one! Such a key for them to learn how to build relationships with each other to solidify the classroom community. @SSCMSStallions#MasteryChat
A5: I offer team challenges in every content area. There are team roles for everyone on the team, and they hold each other to their roles: time mgr, communication mgr, team leader, materials mgr. #masterychat
A5 lots of team projects! We are currently about to start westward expansion and poetry group projects with a resident poet. Can't wait to see what they create #masterychat
LOVE self-paced. My students are still struggling a little because they have been subjected to kill and drill their whole lives, but we're getting there #masterychat

A5: Life is all about working well with others... it's all about TEAMWORK and COOPERATION. My students love to work together each and every day in all subject areas... especially buddy reading, math challenge problems, and creative writing! #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A5 I have my Ss in grps led by a peer They are a team & as they whiteboard, question, answer & collaborate I expect them to do it as a team #Masterychat
A4: Giving students choice and voice. Listening and planning around Ss interests. Choice in learning activities, choice in expression (writing, dictating, drawing), choice in seating (beanbags, carpet, wobble chairs). Empowering Ss to become independent learners! #MasteryChat
A5: We are in teams all the time. Using a gaming system Ss earn points and coins when they work as a team, help out a teammate, support the whole class. Sometimes I tell them it is an individual event but we always go back to the team to debrief the activity. #MasteryChat
A5- in science I make students have lab partners and groups. It is amazing to see how some of the students that struggle the most become the leaders! #MasteryChat
A5: Chemistry Labs always lent themselves to collaboration. I let the students pick their lab partners and change them if necessary LOL. There were some classes where their "elbow partner" was their teammate for that assignment. It taught them to work with EVERYONE #MasteryChat
A5: I create STAD groups to seat students.
Assign group work with individual components that require working together to make the final project complete. Ss have to communicate and listen to each other. #masterychat

James - you are speaking my language! PBL, Inquiry Learning, Choice, and adding Purpose all in one tweet?!?!!?! This is my jam!
Can we talk through this some time in a DM or virtual coffee?! #masterychat
a5 Most days my Ss work in teams of 4 with assigned roles. They are learning to navigate social challenges while focusing on productivity.. #masterychat
#masterychat A5: Small groups going over the hmwk allow more voices. Qs are relevant, answers are personal and come from Ss. No way I could do as much by "leading" the homework review. I just float and help when a group has trouble. (Math).
A4 I get to know them. Then I try to bring their passions into the classroom. I offer them choices so they could really work with enthusiasm and dedication. I meet them where they are to help get them to THEIR goals. #MasteryChat

I've been using it for a year and a half off and on - this year I've gotten away from it a bit. I also struggled a bit to connect our curriculum and the book we use with making it self-paced. Many of my students struggle with the wording of the questions. #MasteryChat

A5: We are working as a team to win the attendance race in third grade. My team built this great bulletin board to motivate the students. We go in the hall every morning to move our skier and so far no one has been absent in my class! This is from the 1st week👍 #MasteryChat
A5: Stations/rotations have really helped with more meaningful collaboration. A structured time limit lights a fire under my motivationally challenged Ss to put their heads together and accomplish tasks. Also, showing others what they've done can motivate teamwork. #MasteryChat
A5: we love to have our two classrooms team up and even interact through tasks over teleconferencing. Here is an example of them playing musical chairs & writing in both locations and they had to work as a team to see who could complete it first. #masterychat

A5) I have my students work alone and as groups. Sometimes the groups need to be adjusted. We do daily group as well as weekly groups to help move things along. #Masterychat
A5: During center time Ss have a chance to collaborate and work as a team. They play academic games together and do partner reading. They have learned this year that working alone we are good but working together we are great! #MasteryChat
A6: I use stations and carousel activities. Would love to add some more ideas that I find tonight. I used to play vocabulary/discussion basketball back in the day. That was fun, too. #masterychat
A5 My students work with a partner for the trimester. They learn techniques for having meaningful discussions - e.g. eye contact, sayback, asking questions, responding to the person instead of waiting to respond to the original question. #MasteryChat
A6: @classcraftgame has been a gamechanger (see what I did there) in my class. Ss love it and are more engaged and working together like never before. #gamification#MasteryChat

It is about celebrating the small steps consistently. Then when something big happens it means more. If you hit and miss then the drive is lost. #masterychat
A6 Tried our first @classcraftgame quest this week! Can't wait to do more. Movement is always allowed as long as you're not distracting someone else. Fidget toys, wiggle stools, bubble timers, or just get up! #masterychat
A6 I feel like I answered this earlier in the chat by going on an on about how much I love #Gamification, lol. I'll share another tidbit with you all though, I rope in my husband to be our official "quest-giver." The kids LOVE it! https://t.co/XAjaRucIY3#masterychat
A6 #Masterychat We have incorporated hula hooping and scooters in math lessons. We have also used the Price is Right and Human Hungry Hungry Hippo. My Ss ❤️being on contestant row on the Price is Right😊
A6: We move every day! Walk and talks instead of lectures. Musical chairs instead of small groups. The more movement, the better! In fact, I wrote an entire chapter on it! #MasteryChathttps://t.co/q4IAEHHKvP

I love to see the transformation that happens over the course of the year. September and October they get so annoyed. By January and February they are resigned to "That's just how she is." Come April and May, they are empowered learners forging their own path. #MasteryChat
The walk and talk has totally changed our class discussions! We usually go walk around the outside of the school (weather permitting) as we chat about things. Ss totally enjoy it, and the time flies by. Ss even ask to do it! #masterychat
