We need more school leaders to share their unique stories of courage, hope and vulnerability. In other words, the stories that have less to do with the ‘doing’ of the role and more to do with “being”…

A1 - I think there are a lot of great quality CPD books available... a cpd library in school is a great idea. Or book swapping. I always like to go on recommendations for cpd books as they can be expensive. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A1 Ones I have read have been generally well thought out and researched. The best ones provide practical advice and this is provided in a format that is easy to read when you are busy rather than in a style that is more appropriate for a thesis.
#UKEdChat A1 There are some brilliant books for CPD, but there are also lots that are dubious. It's incredibly difficult for people early in their careers to tell the difference, and vital that they get good advice from mentors and ITT, and are aware of key debates. @beachhist
A2 - personally prefer easily digestible cpd books. I love pictures of practice or resources etc. Or pictorial representations of ideas. I like short and snappy chapters with reflective questions, activities or resources to consider. Some also include action points! #UKEdChat
A2. Tend to prefer a kindle book because it is cheaper (don't hang me). Books with diagrams/tables are better for me than just text, a casual style of writing, with authors anecdotes to explain ideas or processes. #ukedchat
#UkEdChat A1 Really glad to see an increase in the number of subject-specific CPD books available; more useful for teachers than books on generic pedagogy, in my opinion. We need a @mrbartonmaths for every subject!
A1: In recent years they are much better. Evidence informed. Practical examples. Advice & guidance rather than preachy 'this is the way'. There's choice including generic teaching as well as subject specialism books. But it is expensive for ind teachers #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A2 When mentoring busy teachers, they need something that provides information in a variety of formats - quick summaries perhaps in the format of bullet points with the theory behind it also available for when they have more time...
#UKEdChat Q3
How are CPD books on the whole school level – i.e. use as the basis for whole school training, or a teaching book club to inform CPD?
Pls use the hashtag & A3...
A2: I prefer ones I can dip in and out of. Unfortunately with ft teaching plus family & other commitments I don't always have time to read a full book that builds on previous chapters. I need to be able to select key areas for me from identifiable chapters/topics #ukedchat
A1 I think the quality of CPD books is good. I like ones that give practical advice, related research and questions that make you think and reflect on your own practice and beliefs. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q3 again
How are CPD books on the whole school level – i.e. use as the basis for whole school training, or a teaching book club to inform CPD?
Pls use the hashtag & A3...
A2 I prefer CPD books that start with questions/issues, go through research and what that means in practice followed by questions so you can think about your own context and how the research and practical advice is relevant or not. #UKEdChat
A3. As a school we have used some books as a basis for CPD e.g When the adults change everything changes. There is a also a Guernsey teacher book club that meets to discuss reading (correct @Louisa_J_22 ?), as well as discussing things we have read on twitter chats. #ukedchat
A3: Whilst the FE ITT books are re editions I've noticed that they still peddle some outdated ideas and so for pedagogical cpd they don't work in conjunction with the much more modern secondary thinking. This disparity concerns me esp when promoted as a must buy! #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A3 I think there is great power in shared language. I worked in a school where @TeachLikeAChamp was a big deal, and it made feedback more efficient and more useful because we had a shared starting point and language, and kids benefitted from consistent expectations.
A3 A couple of CPD books were given to all staff when we had a focus on formative assessment and maths. It engaged staff in talking about research and follow up staff meetings meant we could share our ideas and how we were implementing changes. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A3 I reference books when carrying out training and have lent copies to staff (although these can often disappear with the overwhelmed teacher looking at you blankly when you ask about its whereabouts!) Teaching book club great idea, but many staff would cite no time :(
#ukedchat A2 - I'm a big fan of books that allow you to dive in at any point to find any relevant gems. Cover to cover style is alright during the hols, but too time consuming during term time.
A4: Mark.Plan.Teach. Sensible ideas. Easy to dip in & out. Practical advice & I was able to share ideas easily with staff to help them after I'd trialled and tested different options. This saved money for NQTs and time & effort for us all. Also great benefit to students #ukedchat
A4 I really enjoyed reading Bounce by Matthew Syed. The idea of talent vs practice is an interesting one and fits in with fixed vs growth mindset. The impact on my teaching was a change in the language I used (and as a result chn's use of language too) and expectations. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat@HuntingEnglish Closing the Vocabulary Gap and @JudithCHochman The Writing Revolution. Clear, evidence based guidance for implementing strategies to support students. Both are practical and inspiring in equal measure

@atharby and @shaun_allison's Making Every Lesson Count really made me take stock of what and how I was teaching, so glad I made that purchase and I'm sure my students are better off for it too.
Q3 - books like @AlisonMPeacock’s #learningwithoutlimits can have an impact on whole staff pedagogy if you’re looking to communicate whole school vision but tbh most books are simply shown or recommended during cpd, that’s it #UKEdChat
A4 Also Mary Myatt's High Challenge, Low Threat: How the Best Leaders Find the Balance. It was easy to read and I read a chapter at a time. I tried to implement the ideas in my own leadership where relevant and I think it helped me to approach issues in a positive way. #UKEdChat
A5 I have tweeted about particular books I found useful. I was lucky enough to hear @matthewsyed talk about Bounce at a CPD event a few years ago. Also we had whole staff training from an author about formative assessment when the school changed approach. #UKEdChat
Ross Morrison McGill @TeacherToolkit teacher saw one of my 5 min lesson plans and told me off and explained how to use the template properly! It was fantastic to have such input and college have uploaded the generic template to staff moodle for all to use #ukedchat
Q5. Many are on social media or have blogs. It’s not as difficult to interact w/authors as it once was. If you’ve got Qs or want to converse with them about what they’ve written, they’re usually pretty happy to engage! It’s also great if they’re leading workshops etc. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Would be fascinated to learn what ideas they left out of the book because they were not effective and why. Was it due to the cohort, size of class, previous experience of pupils...? We can learn so much from what didn't work and reflecting on that.
A5 - As many of my CPD authors are American, I have linked up with them on Twitter through twitter chats and taken part in webinars they have held. #ukedchat
Let me help you create bespoke: #SEND polices, practices and procedures, be more inclusive, develop children's communication skills (signs, symbols and simplicity), make environments #SEND friendly

#ukedchat A2 I like authors to share anecdotes, stories, examples from their own perspective/career etc. of whatever they are writing about. Adds some personal insight, credibility and can also add some flavour that makes reading easier/more enjoyable.
A6: More FE cpd whether it be vocational (there is much online for this) but esp teaching A Levels as there seems very little that I can find or that anyone has recommended. Generic secondary stuff is always practical in an FE setting #ukedchat
Scratch Space Invaders Pupil Activity Pack - Pupils can learn to program a Space Invaders games in Scratch using inputs, scoring and random variables. Includes a series of video tutorials. https://t.co/eQ00qgLC8K#edtech#scratched#ukedchat

Q6 - I think it’s worth mentioning that some people might prefer specialist blogs or shorter cpd docs that can be found online to books. Information is so readily available online & there is so much great stuff out there. I often opt for online rather than a purchase. #UKEdChat
A7 I'd love to read about picture books by @smithsmm His tweets about picture books remind me of some great picture books and many others are totally new to me. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Veteran teachers who have stayed in the classroom for 40+ years and who are living legends within the school community. They would undoubtedly have fascinating insights, advice and wisdom to share.
Q8 - recognition can be as simple as a positive comment. I think it’s important to share CPD w/colleagues. A quick 5 mins in a staff meeting to explain what you’ve achieved/learned/read is so easy yet doesn’t happen enough. Lots of people still keep CPD to themselves! #UKEdChat
I think @lucy_crehan's Cleverlands is a great example of balancing personal experience with insights and new information. It's very readable! #UKEdChat
In reply to
@Sian_Rowland, @connoracton, @lucy_crehan
A8 - Don't necessarily want recognition from others - just own knowledge that my practise is better is enough. If others here/see what I am doing, then happy to share. #ukedchat
A8: We can upload ours to our individual digital CV. Whilst no official recognition as such, we can also mention in our yearly appraisals. Occasionally this can result in us being asked to run a short workshop, if we are willing. #ukedchat
