New to this chat Thanks for having me! Librarian in Independence Missouri
A1: The gaps in learning cannot be overstated...esp. in primary grades...it sets them up for failure!
A1 Truancy not so much, Attitude behind truancy is much more damaging.
Elementary AP, from VA checking in
A1: Truancy directly affects the Ss' learning experience and quality. Additionally, it interrupts flow of class to address.
A1 Truancy effects the school environment bc kids miss out on bonding with each other and the T.
Hey, Deb. Thank you for being with us tonight.
A1 truancy impacts our ability to deliver the curriculum - here a day and gone two
Good evening ! George here, assistant superintendent from IN. Eager to learn what you are doing to address this issue
A1) Truancy has a major impact on the learning of the individual. It impacts those schools utilizing group work and PBL as well.
We've been working hard getting kids to school this year. Attendance has been a focus.
A1 It impacts all of us negatively. Our district is so large w/so little support to enforce. Laws in Tx. minimize importance- SAD!
Toshila, checking in from Houston, TX
Hello George, thanks for stopping in!
A1 Truancy really sets S&T routines backwards bc we have to find time to make-up missed learning, our schedules are already tight!
A1:makes our desire to improve Ss achievement more difficult because being absent or tardy take important instructional mins away!
A1:Puts a lag in T/S & S/S r’ships & also lag consistencies & structures in place to help Ss succeed.
https://t.co/R4ewAmHFKA
Q1: In what ways does truancy impact your school environment?
Would you mind going deeper on this one, Brett? https://t.co/t4lH7KQf7m
A1 Truancy not so much, Attitude behind truancy is much more damaging.
Yes! Order and flow is important. Too any issues when learners are always playing catch up. https://t.co/z04PIMOk3t
A1: Truancy directly affects the Ss' learning experience and quality. Additionally, it interrupts flow of class to address.
A1 On the selfish side, it's hard to keep kids caught up and working with the class when they miss school a lot
A1. It's nearly impossible to truly educate the whole child when truancy issues are present. Negative impact on group work too
A1: Truancy affects student learning experiences and relationship building. Takes away time from other students.
Q1 I think truancy makes a huge negative impact on relationships due to inconsistent opportunities to build relationships.
Yes he is! is rocking his first year as an admin. I'm so thankful to be working with him! https://t.co/dy7msGD6Qu
Is your assistant principal? Tell him to join! I know he has a lot to offer! Hope he's having a great year!
Yes! It has ripple effect on the classroom community. https://t.co/dLN1Rvuwc4
A1) Truancy has a major impact on the learning of the individual. It impacts those schools utilizing group work and PBL as well.
Research shows that a student in K-2 who is truant has less than 10% chance of reading at grade level in 3rd grade!
A1 Truancy must be addressed early in a child's educational career. Must get at root cause & find solutions before it continues
A1: We can do little to help them if we can’t get them to come through the door
Right on Ben! https://t.co/mSoRL6Xlx5
A1: Truancy affects student learning experiences and relationship building. Takes away time from other students.
Really feel that truancy is a symptom and not the disease. The disease is disconnection and disenfranchisement.
A1 Truancy is more of an attitude prob. for me. Kids often feel school's not imp. It's boring.
Research shows that if a student misses more than 18 days (even excused) K-3, the chances they learn to read is minimal!
A1b: it takes away from the community we try to build, both for the Ss truant and those present w/out them.
A1: Kids come in and out of lrng. They are disconnected. When tchrs plan for lrning just so many holes, the cycle just keeps going
A1: Truancy is loss of instructional time and it interrupts the continuum of learning.
A1: It impacts out ability to properly educate our students when they aren't in school.
A1: Lots of ways! Hard when Ss can't control situation. Tough conversations w/ even young S are necessary to encourage attendance.
A1 interrupts continuity of instruction for students, staff & the individual learner
hello all! New to this chat. High School ELA teacher in an alternative environment.
Bonding is a huge part of building a solid relationship between Ss and Ts! https://t.co/pnEejapJWf
A1 Truancy effects the school environment bc kids miss out on bonding with each other and the T.
Definitely means going back to the root of the problem! Not just "get here"
https://t.co/mEDidJW0Nx
Really feel that truancy is a symptom and not the disease. The disease is disconnection and disenfranchisement.
That helps, thank you for providing more for me, Brett. https://t.co/CxnnAhpclv
Really feel that truancy is a symptom and not the disease. The disease is disconnection and disenfranchisement.
A1 If they skip because "it's boring" they bring that attitude into the classroom when they are there. It can be infectious
A1: truancy isn't identified Prek isn't mandated by the state.at this age u set the foundation for the importance of school
When adults don't feel like a few days missed is a big deal there is a disconnect. https://t.co/O3d4FCwG4c
Would you mind going deeper on this one, Brett? https://t.co/t4lH7KQf7m
A1 Truancy not so much, Attitude behind truancy is much more damaging.
The key is connecting to parents/setting high standards in elementary - we want you (parents) and your kids here!
A1: Miss a day, miss a lot. So much more happens in a day than the work assigned. Work can be made up, experiences can not.
That is the hardest part in our school. When the weather is cold and Ps don't want to leave the house... https://t.co/Cbpzoh02sp
A1: Lots of ways! Hard when Ss can't control situation. Tough conversations w/ even young S are necessary to encourage attendance.
That learning time is already so precious; to have to make up means they’re missing out on something else. https://t.co/1BiQXxRtht
A1 Truancy really sets S&T routines backwards bc we have to find time to make-up missed learning, our schedules are already tight!
A1: Our kids need to be in school not only for the academic content, but the social emotional connections as well. Best place.
A1 With my HS kids, if they aren't coming to class, they aren't connected to anyone. That's the bigger problem
A1: We have a Truancy officer so Ss families don't connect to any one person. We often communicate with families in advance
A1: All Ss are needed to participate & share to provide diverse learning experiences
Yes, the parents are going to play a humongous role! Too many extended vacations and "oh wells" hurt... https://t.co/mJzrwLIR0y
The key is connecting to parents/setting high standards in elementary - we want you (parents) and your kids here!
A1 truancy is complicated. Lots of reasons for kids to miss. Some unengaged, some abused, we need to treat each kids separately
Love it!
https://t.co/4BtXewZ3ap
A1: All Ss are needed to participate & share to provide diverse learning experiences
I think there has to be a less punitive action to get better results for trancy
A1 truancy: the question is why do some kids not want to come to school? Is it something the school did or is it the kid?
I'm sure he is! Great, great person!
Gets harder to play "catch up"
I find this especially in primary grades...they don't realize the foundation we are setting here! https://t.co/kHydy13GCu
Yes, the parents are going to play a humongous role! Too many extended vacations and "oh wells" hurt... https://t.co/mJzrwLIR0y
The key is connecting to parents/setting high standards in elementary - we want you (parents) and your kids here!
A1: Students who have huge problems with absences tend to lack an internal locus of control. They put the blame on others.
i feel like it is all about convenience for the parents & not whats important life skills for children in life you get up & work
A1: Truancy affects the development of relationships with teachers & the student's peers -
Truth. If we are going to address the issue, we must find the root cause and not always the same. https://t.co/R2cJNxsP6a
A1 truancy is complicated. Lots of reasons for kids to miss. Some unengaged, some abused, we need to treat each kids separately
A1 It's not only the kids. Some Ps make it easy to stay home. "Help at home" should not be an absence excuse most of the time
Very true statement! Experiences are what cement the learning. Thanks Chris for this point https://t.co/Xxm0XcI5SD
A1: Miss a day, miss a lot. So much more happens in a day than the work assigned. Work can be made up, experiences can not.
Exactly. Elementary isn't just coloring and recess...
R’ships w/ families are just as important — have to get them to value what we’re doing! https://t.co/OCm8Ngm4cN
A1: Lots of ways! Hard when Ss can't control situation. Tough conversations w/ even young S are necessary to encourage attendance.
it affects their learning- educational and social. Both super important.
It is a sad one...and it is so easily remedied with regular school attendance!
There's that awesome word again! "Relationships"
https://t.co/KZtpaIxB5J
R’ships w/ families are just as important — have to get them to value what we’re doing! https://t.co/OCm8Ngm4cN
A1: Lots of ways! Hard when Ss can't control situation. Tough conversations w/ even young S are necessary to encourage attendance.
A1: in my case, a lot of them are children being raised by parents who were dropouts and don't see the point in coming to school
We are off to a great start! Keep your responses coming. Q2 coming right up!
A1 Low attendance has resulted in HS pathways to Industry Recognized Certifications so kids WANT school in Independence MO
you are so right!!! thank you!
Q2: What are factors that cause truancy PK-12?
Each student voice is needed! https://t.co/aIPuG8jOxx
A1: All Ss are needed to participate & share to provide diverse learning experiences
If kids are not in school is it generational. Parents do not value being at school, then the kids will not.
A2. 140 characters are nowhere enough to cover the variables... https://t.co/oxLy0X3VDj
Q2: What are factors that cause truancy PK-12?
A2: Home situations/poverty.
A1 If parents are apathetic about getting students to school on time, in ELEM., what else do they model devaluing for Ss?
Sounds like a great way to combat truancy...great work! https://t.co/35UKfhVNlz
A1 Low attendance has resulted in HS pathways to Industry Recognized Certifications so kids WANT school in Independence MO
A1 Truancy, means we have to dig deeper
Or is the partnership not solid with the family to make it a priority? https://t.co/1HPimdQwY3
A1 truancy: the question is why do some kids not want to come to school? Is it something the school did or is it the kid?
Q2 Many- parent attitudes towards school. Ps and Ss connection to school is critical. We have to make them all feel connected.
A2 For some, no connections. They don't feel anyone cares about them at school. No one will notice if they aren't there
True for youngers, olders often do it on own. https://t.co/qyCUAg4jdT
If kids are not in school is it generational. Parents do not value being at school, then the kids will not.
A2 in our district - Ss need to work, Ss need to stay home for younger Ss, mental health, disengagement, lack of importance
A2: Home situations, illness, poverty, drugs, gangs, bullying, disenfranchisement, boredom, fear, lack of transportation, apathy
New Post: Through The Looking Glass of Learning - What We Can Learn From Alice about Education Technology https://t.co/O4maWWxM9E
Boom! https://t.co/w9YZnWAnfv
Q2 Many- parent attitudes towards school. Ps and Ss connection to school is critical. We have to make them all feel connected.
Agree! If parents had more of a connection, then hopefully kids would too. https://t.co/9pkYtGyhYx
Q2 Many- parent attitudes towards school. Ps and Ss connection to school is critical. We have to make them all feel connected.
A2 W/ some of my kids, their parents don't care what they do. School isn't a priority.
I'm not sure. For my kids, I provide so much at school that my class is rarely missed. Pencils, paper, snacks, etc.
Stephanie, teacher from Laurens-Marathon - 1st time joining in. sorry I am late!!
A2: part generational, but part privilege, my kid doesn't need to know that- they'll learn it in Kinder
A2. Little or no value of education coming from the home, strong school community/communication, transportation, many factors.
A2) Parents didn't like or had a negative experience in school therefore do not see the value for their children.
A2: Elementary it's more on the parents, than in high school. High schoolers have more control over their situation sometimes.
Hey, glad you came back! Welcome!
sometimes it is generational. Lack of transportation, poor health, no connection to school. We must find ways via relationships
A2: Truancy--lack of support at home or school, friendship issues, learning disabilities w/o support, mental health, bullying.
A2: Low regard for the value of education.
A2 at the HS level it is often the p's who do not get the s to school on time or they have to get a younger sibling on the bus
A2: Some families had a negative experience in school and associate bad feelings toward it. Also Ss feel disconnected.
A2: apathy w/Ss & Ps -see school unimportant- larger issues at play- abuse / neglect - school not relevant https://t.co/J6Fax3T0be
Q2: What are factors that cause truancy PK-12?
A2 And, some kids have learned to work their parents (who are overworked). They can fake being sick and P believes them
A2) There r many factors that cause truancy…family factors, school factors, economic factors, student variables to name a few.
Many factors - I truly believe some families don't believe we want them in school, we need to reach out & go out!
A2 There are many factors. Initially, it may be a lack of positive experiences at school for many Ps. Why would they force Ss!
A2 I have seen increase involvement of parents because teacher is constantly “in” the home
A2: role models to show that schooling is important- no foundation for the future- hopes, goals
A2: Parents don't see school as a priority, thus building a "Pass the blame" culture on to their kids. Need to reach parents!
Parents aren't totally off the hook, though. Especially in rural areas. Ss are still reachable in secondary.
A2. Little or no value of education coming from the home, lack of strong, constant communication, transportation, many factors.
A2 Some kids have anxiety about school, teachers, peers - but avoiding school creates more anxiety - vicious cycle.
Kay, Principal KS, I'm late but interested in this topic
A2 But mostly, I think it goes back to relationships. If P and S don't have a connection in school, it's easy to stay home
What if every student in every school had an adult in their corner. Someone to always turn to, a reason to come to school?
My thougths EXACTLY! https://t.co/j4WkB0VQL3
A2 There are many factors. Initially, it may be a lack of positive experiences at school for many Ps. Why would they force Ss!
Parents’ attitudes re: school are critical! Yes! https://t.co/DFS3YXoY3O
Q2 Many- parent attitudes towards school. Ps and Ss connection to school is critical. We have to make them all feel connected.
A2: many factors, sometimes the student is acting as the caregiver for younger siblings.
A2 Influence of peers, lack of self esteem, bullying, bad relationships with teachers, family factors, lack of academic ability
Glad your could join us! Welcome!
A2- Erik Buchholz coming late. Truancy simply causes heart ache. Caused by students not feeling school is the right place to be.
Totally agree. Just thinking about the elementary students who can't drive.
A2: starts w/ being connected. Ensuring ALL Ss are connected is essential. Can't build relationship if they don't come to school.
Good to see you, buddy. Thank you for being here.
A2. Admin, Ts, and a whole school community that truly believes in a child makes them WANT to come to school. Goes a long way
Haha... There are those who have tried. :-)
A2. Factors:Misinformation, parents don't realize imp, mental illness, transportation, bullying, teachers. https://t.co/ZXU7RSgA2Q
Q2: What are factors that cause truancy PK-12?
parents who had a poor experience academically or socially when in school may influence child's attitude.
Truancy is a symptom from apathy towards education. Some kids are victims of their environment.
A2: my kids miss because they don't have the required uniform. I've quit writing referrals for that. I need them in class.
A2: Often our students don’t feel successful at school. We usually don’t like to be places where we don’t think we can succeed.
A2 everything between knowing diff between sick&uncomfortable/not feeling conn. to school/priorities not centered on being present
We have many problems getting our little ones to school consistently, need to reach parents more effectively ideas?
Lacking Relevance: at ISD in Independence MO a clear pathway to college credit or an Industry Recog Certification gets attention
This is SO important! This helps in many ways and easy for us to take a special interest! https://t.co/japArfYIpf
What if every student in every school had an adult in their corner. Someone to always turn to, a reason to come to school?
Yes. And create connections with those parents.
Very true Dale....Apple and tree!!
Absolutely. We have an obligation to do this.
Does your school do Power of One?
Agree! If they are not reaching out to us, we need to go get our message to them…. https://t.co/KSXuIHenOH
Many factors - I truly believe some families don't believe we want them in school, we need to reach out & go out!
A2: too many for 140 characters…every reason may be different, many are because of parents…if parents feel connect, Ss attend more
Trend in may districts- hope to find ways to advocate for more resources & funding to help schools w/this issue
Lelabon Dyer A2 Children taking care of themselves, lack of parental involvement makes it so hard
A2: is becomes habit. they miss a day, then 2, then it becomes easier to skip/stay home.
Agree! Solid partnership needs to be valued on both ends. https://t.co/DZQz4ODeT1
A2: Parents don't see school as a priority, thus building a "Pass the blame" culture on to their kids. Need to reach parents!
build relationship to find out the barriers then work to connect S w/ peers & purpose for learning.
It is sad. They take what they learned in elementary and carry it over.
A2 I have a S where my connection with her, my getting after her when she misses, is important. She told me it gets her to school
A2: Hard for some to see that school should be a priority. Some have the, "Well I'm fine..." attitude. We must change this!
Q3 is right around the corner. Keep this chat rolling!
A2b: Student disengagement. Routines are great, but variety is the spice of life.
Don't forget, the Iowa conference is approaching! Attend, present, or more info. https://t.co/RIbZ0MNzQV fun to connect/share
Agree with this...many families are dealing with things that I can't even begin to understand! https://t.co/786vfcmWed
A2: Home situations/poverty.
mental health is a tricky variable because it is scary how little that is supported sometimes
it is where staff/faculty identify struggling students & we mentor them. Encourage them to be at school. Genuinely
Q3: What steps has your school taken to reduce student absences?
A2:Parents who work with us, kids don't become Hab.Truants. Those who never show up for truancy mtgs, don't show for court either
Kids will come to school if they choose to be there. That means creating a culture that they would never want to miss a day!
Sometimes…. or almost all the time!!!
Yes! Love Rita! Every child deserves a champion.
upset if they miss. Praise them for jobs well done. We "take them on" as personal investments.
A3: to reduce absence principal calls, checks up, goes and gets students if need be
A3: Ts are encouraged to connect w/ Ps regularly in various ways (Remind, email, phone, website, etc.) https://t.co/ef4IRIvy8v
Q3: What steps has your school taken to reduce student absences?
A2.1: I think a big part of getting Ss to school & part of the action is developing engaging real worth learning experiences.
At 1 school I taught each staff“adopted” a struggling student & made a personal connection with the kid each day. It really helped
A2: Family/parents, illnesses, phobias, depression
A3 Wrote a grant for $10K. Using it for bus tickets, rewards, and other items. Wish I would have just bought a bus!
all faculty/staff is involved. Have seen our attendance rates raise as result.
I really like the sound of this!
A3: Mindset and programs promote recognizing Ss achievements outside the usual sports & academics.
A3: Elementary-Rewards for having whole class on time for 5 days in a row, then 10, and so on. Attendance Wall of Fame too.
A3: I wouldn’t say this is the reason, but it does have Ss at school at 7:30am and that is our
that sounds like an amazing program! does her school serve many SES?
Love this idea! each teacher taking I e child who struggles {with attendance}. https://t.co/grUKlV3G6l
it is where staff/faculty identify struggling students & we mentor them. Encourage them to be at school. Genuinely
You would not believe how many students I go and get...eliminate excuses!
BAM! Cant control what we can't control. Focus changes and meeting ind. S needs is imperative to success. https://t.co/dRFSkyndXE
Kids will come to school if they choose to be there. That means creating a culture that they would never want to miss a day!
we also have a PBIS team at school. Do you have this as well?
A2 educating families of what has changed since they were Ss & forming relationships is key.
A3) Bett functions under a “Students 1st” mentality. Anti-bullying measures, a safe envirnmnt & online attendance have helped.
A3 - Learning not all students learn the same. Some classroom, some online. At risk programs and alternative programs, etc.
A3 I like our homebase idea. A work in progress, but kids know they have an adult in their corner
A3+ Academic Interventionist, , works with Dean of Ss, , for home visits, luncheons, supply bags, etc.
Yes, we utilize the PBIS model at and
you are right and let them know they are missed! that they matter!
A3 BY law, now,we are required to create an Attendance Improvement Plan as needed. While ting is the main thing, we are to do more!
does cause heartache but this cause is too simplistic. I have a student who LOVES school when he is there! https://t.co/9SwIdDmL1S
A2- Erik Buchholz coming late. Truancy simply causes heart ache. Caused by students not feeling school is the right place to be.
I teach alternative with the school. Called Success Academy. Our whole program is power of one.
A3) Home visits communicate to parents that we care!
A3: Working hard to build relationships w/ families. Helping them see importance of being at school through pictures/blogs.
A3: We've made sure that the student voice is heard. Students created a mentor program so that new students can make connections
- Home Visits - Phone Calls - PBIS - Celebrate Great Attendance - Create Plans to Support Parents @ home
A3+ Moving toward more intervention times during the school day so that we don't have to rely on bus, parents, etc.
we linked our Power of One with out PBIS team.
A3: Rather than punish S not showing up, we started making incentives to reward S doing the right thing! Truancy dropped 35%!
i might have to pick your brain and get more info! :)
If we are at 90%+ in attendance, how hard should we push to be 100%? I’m just saying. Food for thought. Only so many resources.
A3. Sp transp, incentives/prizes, mentor grps, free breakfst, positive communication home, mental health. https://t.co/VfpwuMvqie
Q3: What steps has your school taken to reduce student absences?
Right because it could never be the school culture, Ts, admins, overall coercive, topdown, punitive model. https://t.co/ODtDjqO0mZ
A2: Family/parents, illnesses, phobias, depression
Great idea...consequences are not always the right choice. https://t.co/Z1cMCZawMt
A3: Rather than punish S not showing up, we started making incentives to reward S doing the right thing! Truancy dropped 35%!
Start bldg relationship w/ Ps. I've gone 2 houses & picked up kids. Every situation is difference. We should respond diff 2 each.
A3 P & S conferences to help make connection and work to instill value and importance of school
A3: When we struggle to connect with famiies at school, we meet them on their turf and conduct home visits. Great practice.
A3: as new principal I’m trying to build parent relations, many Ts do incentives in their rooms…looking for whole building ideas
A3: Secretary calls home daily if don't hear from family; counselor and admin meet with student to problem solve situation
Unfortunate that we have some P's that see this as intrusion and the long arm of the man. https://t.co/GUX2HTruoX
A3) Home visits communicate to parents that we care!
Sometimes out of Ss control— Ps oversleeping, make school not a priority. Hate to see Ss suffer for P inconsistency.
you are right providing relevance to their learning is so important! it puts them at the forefront of their learning
A3:Buy alarm clocks, provide bus tokens, gas cards, pick up students and chat with fam.
We give ACE bucks weekly to be redeemed at the school store for attendance and cooperation everyday.
please do! I am on our PBIS team and have six students who are currently my power of one lovelies.
A3: home visits. involve parents in plan. teachers intentionally make positive connections with students.
A3 Part 1: Formal: Phone calls from nurse, counselors, admins; attendance contracts; home visits
Love this! Especially the alarm clock idea -
https://t.co/aAl0vvE2gT
A3:Buy alarm clocks, provide bus tokens, gas cards, pick up students and chat with fam.
So how do we reach those parents that need that help? we have to invest in them as well? but how?
A3 Part 2: Informal: Welcome Ss back the day after they are gone. It let's them know that you noticed and that you care.
A3: our elementary kids don't start until almost 9. That helps SO much!
