#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Wahoo! Sam here from MA, 7th grade world geo. I'll be completely honest, our curriculum does not include Canada or the rest of North America... So I'll do my best to be part of this chat! #worldgeochat
Canada for a while wasn't in our curriculum 😢 Now that we have a thematic curriculum I'm looking for ways to weave Canada and our friends in the North into our course. Excited to learn a lot tonight! #Worldgeochat
I’d name you an honorary Canuck if you’d like Pete :) Allison from #Ottawa by way of #Arnprior / #Burnstown which is Algonquin Territory (unceded) #worldgeochat
I'm Chris from Illinois. I went to Niagara Falls once and drove across the bridge from Detroit another time. So I'm pretty much an expert on Canada.
#worldgeochat
There are a few inside jokes here at #worldgeochat... We're not telling you what they are but you might want to grab your favorite beverage while we play.... you'll know when ;p
Hi all! I’m a secondary geography teacher from Mississauga, Ontario which is just west of Toronto. I’m now an instructional coach. We are on the traditional land of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation #worldgeochat
A1 #worldgeochat I've never personally done a #canada unit but I might try having students (w/tech) try and list as many famous discoveries, people, places, et al that they can find.
Small groups
Whiteboards
Try to spark curiosity by using a wikipedia wormhole lesson
Laura here coming from Brampton, Ontario, Canada...30 minutes from downtown Toronto, 1 hour to Niagara Falls #worldgeochat recognizing that I live on the land of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations. Thought I would give you sense of place.
A1: As a Canadian educator, this is tough. From hockey, to parks, to poutine. Right now it's looking our country for celebration of diversity & the rights we have that my 7/8s know they are lucky to be part of in comparison to other parts of the world right now. #worldgeochat
This is my first true social studies class (have taught history for 20 years). I am starting to swim a little after mostly treading water for the first month. It IS a super interesting and exciting class #worldgeochat
A1
Years ago, I used this scene from Canadian Bacon to introduce Quebec. Looking at it today, I'm not so sure it was a good idea!
#Worldgeochathttps://t.co/zSNhADG3cP
A1: I have not led an extensive unit of Canada. Just got down the road to how it became a country.
I'll assume if I bring poutine to the party, I can hook most. That is an amazing dish! #worldgeochat
Ken from western Oregon university & center for geo education in Oregon. Checking in from daughter’s soccer practice on phone. Going to be in and out tonight #worldgeochat
A1/part 2 I also give Ss a pre-mosaic template where to record anything they already "know" about C. I then break a plate to "break up" preconceived stereotypes. My EQ/driving unit ? Is "what similar tiles & differing hues make up the past & present mosaic of C?"#worldgeochat
hI founds this students study of the language to be interesting; though he is not Canadian and their are OODLES of #FNMI based resources, thought I would share it anyway. https://t.co/DmKioVlEXn@JayOdjick has some amazing language learning #worldgeochat
A1 Not specificallyCanada but they’re a part of it. I like getting students to think about map perspectives with an Arctic centered map https://t.co/GgxvwDOfBO: #worldgeochat
The landscapes! No question! Having such beautiful locations makes for incredibly deep and meaningful discussions on the beauty and power of nature! #WorldGeoChat@ThePioPress
Absolutely. Start with understanding our #FNMI people. They were here first & so their history should be shared first. The French/English come second. #worldgeochat
Current events provide overwhelming opportunities for relevant discussion to whatever our reading covered on any given day - good problem to have! #worldgeochat
A2: #worldgeochat
1. The diversity of climate/ecosystems found in Canada.
2. Influence of different cultures in building Canada.
3. Population distribution and distribution of resources.
Nunavut should be a topic of discussion.
A2: 1. Understand the history of Canada from our Indigenous People 2. Understand the diversity of this country & its beauty. 3. Understand our role in protecting the beauty of the country & continued respect for the environment/people #worldgeochat
A2
I haven't taught Canada in a decade, BUT...
I'd want my Ss to understand that there is more to Canada than the Single Story of syrup, hockey, & friendly faces. Somehow, because they are "positive" stereotypes, people have no problem using them.
#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat I would start with @googleearth inspiring inquiry through exploration and sparking curiosity to develop passion for the students to learn more about the region going forward.
A1: How BEAUTIFUL it is! I've kayaked around Ontario and it was one of my favorite locations. Also, stressing that Canada is more than the Biebs. #worldgeochat
A2: 1. Understand the history of Canada from our Indigenous People 2. Understand the diversity of this country & its beauty. 3. Understand our role in protecting the beauty of the country & continued respect for the environment/people #worldgeochat
Too bad I cannot write correctly. Language is a huge part of my class (all in French) and learning a bit more about various indigenous languages & showcasing how it can be learned though I would prefer they learn from the likes of @JayOdjick . #worldgeochat
In reply to
@GeoSpiegs, @ecasey77, @JayOdjick, @JayOdjick
A2: 1. #FNMI stories must be part of the narrative 2. Similarities between southern Canada’s climate and US 3. Rich in cultural diversity #worldgeochat
Okay, I cannot help but share this but did you know that we have a goldfish problem in Lake Ontario? Don't get me wrong, I swim in the beautiful #MadawaskaRiver but this blew my mind to know: https://t.co/p8Cz7yxzdh#worldgeochat
A2: I have not had the pleasure of teaching Canada yet, but it will start VERY shortly for me! I want my students to see how diverse Canada is, and to be able to develop compare and contrast skills regarding the US and Canada #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat I would start with @googleearth inspiring inquiry through exploration and sparking curiosity to develop passion for the students to learn more about the region going forward.
A2 (1) That Canada's population is mostly within the Quebec City to Windsor corridor and the rest are within 200 km from the border (2) the people in the city are highly multicultural and the rural areas are not (3) the land varies from high mountains to prairies #worldgeochat
Question 3 #worldgeochat
What current events/issues/topics do not get enough attention that maybe we should take a risk & try diving into in the future?
A2
I think one of the most bizarre things is that parts of the US/Canada border are literally lines plowed into wheat fields. No threat of walls being built there.
#worldgeochat
@JaimeJiggs shared so many amazing Indigenous artists our National Gallery a few years ago. Shifted a bit about who I share in the classroom and the perspectives etc. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat looking at historically significant players, the role of hockey in residential schools or its development to being a part of an identity could all be entry points
A2 physical diversity (ex. Boreal forest, coasts, mountains, flatlands), cultural diversity (ex. Quebec v other Provinces, First Nations, African-American), First Nations rights & story compared to indigenous in US, #worldgeochat
Incredibly power and a must read for any educator, Canadian, human really. Seven Fallen Feathers has influenced so much of my planning this year. #worldgeochat
Okay, I cannot help but share this but did you know that we have a goldfish problem in Lake Ontario? Don't get me wrong, I swim in the beautiful #MadawaskaRiver but this blew my mind to know: https://t.co/p8Cz7yxzdh#worldgeochat
Guess I should have included #worldgeochat
When visiting Vancouver went to ski resort at Whistler. Also a lodge further North in mountains. Big difference from gardens on Vancouver Island.
A1. Checking in from Chicago. I have vacationed in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Beautiful country. Great history. As climate change continues, and world warms, I expect Canada to also have great future.
Apparently our Starbucks equiv? All I know is that it was open during White Juan when I was in Nova Scotia for school & I had snowgoogles to get there and I think one of my roommates jumped from our second story window into a massive snow bank. Serious. @Cl3verFox#worldgeochat
A3: This article is a couple of years old, but it highlights some of the issues facing Canadians. Interesting perspectives. https://t.co/E3OxoV98uD#worldgeochat
I used this story about the U.S. town located inside Canada for our borders unit https://t.co/EFPx9V37US I learned about it from this chat! #worldgeochat
Here's something @patagonia has been part of - https://t.co/79884DoPca - great documentary as well that highlights the beauty of the back country & the need to proetch it for Indigenous peoples, wildlife, and more. #worldgeochat
Amanda from Dallas here, sorry I’m late..(kids bedtime)...I introduce Canada by telling my own personal experience from my first time I went to Vancouver to last summer in Quebec....it’s always about the diverse culture that hooks my kiddos. #worldgeochat
I use maps to show where organized, #mentor_rich k-12 youth programs are most needed, based on poverty, poorly performing schools, etc. Graphics illustrate need to be long-term. I point to list of Chicago orgs at https://t.co/Ivly9IG6Jo Browse the list & pick one or two to aid.
A4: The impact of rising sea levels on the landscape of the coastal cities of Canada. How will this change impact the population in these areas? Other areas? #worldgeochat
A4: Climate change. I think it would be fascinating to compare and contrast photos of places, for example, in the Yukon to see if there are any noticeable differences. #worldgeochat
A2 Issues my students investigate centre around resources (esp piplelines) & indigenous (esp water on reserve). Also the effect of climate change on arctic sovereignty. I love my circumpolar map for this. Blows their minds--all the countries involved. #worldgeochat
It's so different to think about Canada and coastal flooding. Most students focus on low lying areas such as The Netherlands and Florida. What cities in Canada are in the most 'danger'? #worldgeochat
A4 can look at climate change on issues occurring in the boreal forest (ex invasive species, changing weather patterns), sea life & deregulation USA government impacts on geography in Canada #worldgeochat
A4 Weather & climate in the far north is pretty incredible, how they go from lakes in summer/fall to ice roads in winter/spring. Would be great to find data when the ice roads have opened over the years to compare changes in climate #worldgeochat
A4 - Relative location & population distribution related to climate & early settlement near rivers - leading to population centers today. Tundra & permafrost mini-lesson. #worldgeochat
I used to joke about Canada being too smart to annex a certain part of MI. Now part of me wishes I had moved to that locale and that they did annex it .... #worldgeochat
This should be A4.... #worldgeochat We also look at the 4 geographical thinking concepts. Interrelationships, Spatial Significance, Geographic Perspectives, and Patterns and trends.

As a sometimes stereotypical Canadian, I would like to apologize for consistent spelling/grammar mistakes in tonight's Tweets by me. @MsIppolito is exemplifying that she is the far better Canuck tonight. I just get excited. @GeoSpiegs@cheffernan75@NatGeoEducation#worldgeochat
Eep. Laura help? I don't think it is? I don't get offended but that being said maybe? This could be a big learning for me on a public forum! #worldgeochat
In reply to
@cheffernan75, @MsIppolito, @GeoSpiegs, @NatGeoEducation
I thank you I am also super excited. I recently moved out of my classroom so I have resources laid out throughout my house #worldgeochat I am trying to make up for not being able to follow along or keep up

@mrburnettOGA - you may want to join these weekly chats... great for ideas and camaraderie. Sort like how your 5th grade team incited children to seek revenge on those Brits by invading Canada 1812 #worldgeochat
I don't find Canuck offensive but now I am interested in looking into its roots just to make sure. In all fairness I rarely if ever use it. #worldgeochat

I just told the kids to read books by themselves. They actually turned the lights off by themselves and fell asleep around 8:30 #parentingwin#worldgeochat
Agreed, the “cultural mosaic” can be misleading, I like to discuss the issue of Quebec and it’s mostly French inhabitants and where they fit in...or don’t fit in #worldgeochat
Ca·nuck

INFORMAL
noun
1.
a Canadian (sometimes derogatory in US use).
"as a true Canuck, Hayden loves pizza"
So Canadians can use it, but US should not?

Yup! So excited that this is going to be part of our learning space in the near future. #FNMI education & #GlobalGoals are at the root of our learning this year & moving forward. #worldgeochat

I loved using the giant floor maps. I used the Canada map when I taught an international summer school with students from China. It was super fun and made discussing location and space easier #worldgeochat
A lot of #natgeocertified educators are from Canada, and one of our favorite recent blog posts detailed how she used puppetry (arts for the win!) to introduce issues of immigration and ancestry. Good stuff! #worldgeochathttps://t.co/5JlJ4J1FSH
"The Sweater" after Quebec studies - it illustrates many of the historical cultural tensions in a way students can grasp. https://t.co/xPogzwMdFg#worldgeochat
Heritage Minutes https://t.co/KjhDB3RE6q#worldgeochat another place to start about Canada is we have these quick minute clips that could lead into inquiries

Have to run as daughter’s soccer wrapping up. A last tidbit about Canada. Quebec City has been called Gibraltar of North America because of its strategic location on St Lawrence #worldgeochat
A6 Not for the squeamish, but these necropsy videos from @PBS and the good folks at the @ROMtoronto are the most popular resources on our blog. Ever. Be glad you don’t have smell-o-vision. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/1lfUtd0jTv
I used the printable tiles to get the students to make a collaborative art project. I shrunk them down to 1/4 of the size. They each coloured their tile in their own way--using an assigned colour for the provinces/territories. It was a fun way to build community. #worldgeochat
