Thank you #COLchat for a great discussion @RodneyHetherton @MicheleCorbat And @rickwormeli2 ALWAYS great to learn from you!
  • heisterj Dec 4 @ 9:01 PM EST
A7-Disagree. Bad analogy. Grades are important for Ps to understand how well their child is learning at Sch. Feedback is important to Ss to understand how well they know the LTs being taught/assessed. #COLchat
  • BradLatzke Dec 4 @ 9:01 PM EST
Thx @kenoc7 for leading #colchat tonight and to all participants too.

The wealth of experts willing to share their knowledge via chats like this (and #sblchat Thursday’s) is astounding - and at times more engaging than at a conference #Colchat

A correct answer is actually a C because you’re either correct or incorrect. That’s average. 50/50 chance of being correct or incorrect. C is also for choose - choose to accept your grade, choose to fix mistakes, or choose to go further #colchat
    In reply to @rickwormeli2, @MicheleCorbat
  • JoyKirr Dec 4 @ 9:02 PM EST
Thank you, @MicheleCorbat, @RodneyHetherton, @rickwormeli2, @kenoc7, @Aricfoster2, @MonteSyrie and so many more for another #colchat to help us grow as professionals!

Right which is why C stands for Choose - Choose to accept your grade or choose to fix errors or choose to go further #colchat

  • kenoc7 Dec 4 @ 9:07 PM EST
That is not a choice that students should be allowed to make. We need to be “Warm demanders” and demand at least proficiency. #COLchat

Still remember a friend getting 85.4999999999% and teacher would not adjust it even after he “found” a mark on a test (it was an attitude punishment) #colchat

Thanks for posting this. That is the cover of the second edition. The fourth edition was published in October and is available from Corwin, Amazon and Barnes and Noble. A lot of #COLchat and #SBLchat people have contributions in the book.

I would love to kick % to the curb. #COLchat
    In reply to @kenoc7
  • rickwormeli2 Dec 4 @ 9:13 PM EST
It's prohibitive to do that for all 100 down to 0 levels, and it splits hairs with a false sense of precision on the 100-point scale. 'Much easier to vet evidence, and calibrate it for consistency's sake teacher to teacher when using smaller scales. #COLchat
    In reply to @stampingout, @technolandy, @WaltKozlowski
  • technolandy Dec 4 @ 9:16 PM EST
Symbols are metaphors for a broad range (too broad) need descriptions and artifacts of learning to have a more complete understanding (as opposed to giving a 3/B to avoid ‘those’ conversations #colchat
    • rickwormeli2 Dec 4 @ 9:11 PM EST
'Really think whatever symbol we use has to be directly linked with a longer, more thoughtful, description of evidence we don't have time to write out for every student. I see grades/percentages as place-holders for that kind of reporting, not as descriptors themselves.

  • rickwormeli2 Dec 4 @ 9:16 PM EST
#COLchat Holy crap. That's all I can say about a teacher who does this. Unbelievable -- wow.
    In reply to @technolandy, @stampingout, @WaltKozlowski
  • LisaDegnan1 Dec 4 @ 9:16 PM EST
Setting goals with a percentage is silly. What do you want to learn! Percentages will NEVER tell you. #COLchat
    • kenoc7 Dec 4 @ 8:16 PM EST
Rubrics with levels and clear descriptors are so much better than % - real rather than just symbolic meaning. #COLchat
      • mssackstein Dec 4 @ 8:14 PM EST
Rubrics aren't always terribly useful either... And are grades a function of a rubric, I mean, really? #colchat
        In reply to @stampingout, @MicheleCorbat
  • technolandy Dec 4 @ 9:17 PM EST
Even more so when 0-50 essentially mean the same thing....as my Russian History professor shared from his teachers4 point scale: 4 is for God. 3 is for me. The rest are for you.... #colchat
    In reply to @rickwormeli2, @stampingout, @WaltKozlowski
  • maverikcrq Dec 4 @ 9:18 PM EST
Just read what a “warm demander” Is. Now I understand. Unfortunately, what our Ss and their parents understand is the A-F scale. I try to use the scale as a way to encourage deeper learning & for Ss to persevere #colchat
    In reply to @kenoc7, @rickwormeli2, @MicheleCorbat
  • maverikcrq Dec 4 @ 9:19 PM EST
Most grades are based on completion and accuracy, not quality or depth of learning. A correct answer does not mean you know your stuff. It means you can answer that item. Describe and explain concept & process. Use items as textual evidence & examples #colchat

Looking back - we were her first class and we were rough on many teachers.....many. teachers. But we defended the ones we liked to the nth degree #COLchat

  • maverikcrq Dec 4 @ 9:21 PM EST
This is why I like standards based grading. However, I recommend turning the imperative statement a standard’s objective into a good question that can set the instructional focus & serve as a formative, summative, or authentic assessment of deeper student learning #colchat
    In reply to @kenoc7, @rickwormeli2, @MicheleCorbat
  • maverikcrq Dec 4 @ 9:22 PM EST
Most curricular and asssessnenf items are not aligned to the range or depth of knowledge demanded by the standard. They are usually 1-2 levels below the DOK ceiling of assessment #colchat

Snark, 'really? #COLchat I'm there to teach so that he learns, matures. Snark, gruff demeanor, sarcasm don't do either of these. In fact, they turn him away. It's more demanding, maturing, to incorporate thoughtful consequences and hope, not the stuff that makes him turn away.

    • rickwormeli2 Dec 4 @ 9:13 PM EST

Sadly, assessment “questions” are not even questions. They are imperative statements given as directions accompanied by an item that serves as a sample or snapshot of what a student know, understands, can do, or how deeply they can think at that moment in that situation #colchat

#students can sometimes be more critical of themselves than a #teacher. #colchat
    • maverikcrq Dec 4 @ 8:59 PM EST
I had my Ss choose their grades & always gave them the opportunity & choice to improve the quality of their work, not just the accuracy of their responses #colchat

  • maverikcrq Dec 4 @ 9:40 PM EST
If there is a question on an assessment, it is usually a multiple choice question - and that’s NOT a good question. Good questions have Ss think deeply express & share their learning insightfully & in their own unique way,not choose the correct answer from 3-4 detractors #colchat
    In reply to @Erik_Youngman
  • maverikcrq Dec 4 @ 9:41 PM EST
Yep - and I encouraged them to go for the B or the A. Make grading a formative and continuous learning experience, not just a summative review #colchat
