Monday 9-10 p.m. EST. Building a Culture of Learning. "We invite all educators, parents, students and any member of a school community to join our mission of moving away from compliance to create and foster a true COL."
A7-Disagree. Bad analogy. Grades are important for Ps to understand how well their child is learning at Sch. Feedback is important to Ss to understand how well they know the LTs being taught/assessed. #COLchat
The wealth of experts willing to share their knowledge via chats like this (and #sblchat Thursday’s) is astounding - and at times more engaging than at a conference #Colchat

A correct answer is actually a C because you’re either correct or incorrect. That’s average. 50/50 chance of being correct or incorrect. C is also for choose - choose to accept your grade, choose to fix mistakes, or choose to go further #colchat
More information on what colleges are expecting in the light blue tabs here: https://t.co/L9zGtjwSYY Also, home-schooled kids have gone to college. #COLchat
Still remember a friend getting 85.4999999999% and teacher would not adjust it even after he “found” a mark on a test (it was an attitude punishment) #colchat

Thanks for posting this. That is the cover of the second edition. The fourth edition was published in October and is available from Corwin, Amazon and Barnes and Noble. A lot of #COLchat and #SBLchat people have contributions in the book.
It's prohibitive to do that for all 100 down to 0 levels, and it splits hairs with a false sense of precision on the 100-point scale. 'Much easier to vet evidence, and calibrate it for consistency's sake teacher to teacher when using smaller scales. #COLchat

Symbols are metaphors for a broad range (too broad) need descriptions and artifacts of learning to have a more complete understanding (as opposed to giving a 3/B to avoid ‘those’ conversations #colchat
'Really think whatever symbol we use has to be directly linked with a longer, more thoughtful, description of evidence we don't have time to write out for every student. I see grades/percentages as place-holders for that kind of reporting, not as descriptors themselves.

Even more so when 0-50 essentially mean the same thing....as my Russian History professor shared from his teachers4 point scale: 4 is for God. 3 is for me. The rest are for you.... #colchat

Just read what a “warm demander”
Is. Now I understand. Unfortunately, what our Ss and their parents understand is the A-F scale. I try to use the scale as a way to encourage deeper learning & for Ss to persevere #colchat

Most grades are based on completion and accuracy, not quality or depth of learning. A correct answer does not mean you know your stuff. It means you can answer that item. Describe and explain concept & process. Use items as textual evidence & examples #colchat

This is why I like standards based grading. However, I recommend turning the imperative statement a standard’s objective into a good question that can set the instructional focus & serve as a formative, summative, or authentic assessment of deeper student learning #colchat

Most curricular and asssessnenf items are not aligned to the range or depth of knowledge demanded by the standard. They are usually 1-2 levels below the DOK ceiling of assessment #colchat

Just discovered "Levidromes" on https://t.co/PyzEzxbudt a word that spells a different word when read backwards like Stop and Pots. Kudos to this 6-yr-old innovator who clearly lives in a home with a #colchat#cotoakland
Snark, 'really? #COLchat I'm there to teach so that he learns, matures. Snark, gruff demeanor, sarcasm don't do either of these. In fact, they turn him away. It's more demanding, maturing, to incorporate thoughtful consequences and hope, not the stuff that makes him turn away.

Sadly, assessment “questions” are not even questions. They are imperative statements given as directions accompanied by an item that serves as a sample or snapshot of what a student know, understands, can do, or how deeply they can think at that moment in that situation #colchat

I had my Ss choose their grades & always gave them the opportunity & choice to improve the quality of their work, not just the accuracy of their responses #colchat
If there is a question on an assessment, it is usually a multiple choice question - and that’s NOT a good question. Good questions have Ss think deeply express & share their learning insightfully & in their own unique way,not choose the correct answer from 3-4 detractors #colchat
Yep - and I encouraged them to go for the B or the A. Make grading a formative and continuous learning experience, not just a summative review #colchat
