One hey it’s time for the #HogFBChat! As always, I’m Robert Ortiz aka your favorite coach’s favorite coach. OL coach at Murrieta Valley HS in Murrieta, CA. Let’s get this started boys!
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachDingus: Coaches! It's time to for Check-ins even if you lurk please check in. Tell us who you are and where you coach. Lets see some awesome gifs! #hogfbchat
Ryan Higgins, Chisholm Trail HS in Fort Worth, Texas. I’m a little late to #hogfbchat because I was eating Fuzzys tacos. Figured that’s an approved reason
A1: Essentially everything we teach is rooted in #OLPBuiltToDominate principles. But yes, ideally we try to vertical set, especially against the elite DE’s we face on a weekly basis out here in D-I California ball #HogFBChat
A1: Huge fan of the vertical set. Kicking back and getting depth off the line allows you that extra few tenths of a second to handle stunts, twists, blitz, etc. #hogfbchat
A1: yes. Will teach to uncovered OL or tackle on Zone side of pass pro to create “triangle.” Tackle creates wall with guard, eliminating the gap. #hogfbchat
Negative ghost rider. We see very few teams that have the rushers that offer that kind of rush. And we’re very run oriented so we don’t see many wide alignments either #hogfbchat
A1: Paul Alexander has his tackles adjust based on reads. “Air read” is a more vertical set. This means the DE is over air. If my G or C EVER vertical set I’ll kick them in the ass. A QB drops back to get depth. Vertical set prevents that. #hogfbchat
A1: Teach it as part of the tool box but it's not used often. We dont face the kind of elite DE that can get up field and turn the corner that quickly. #hogfbchat
@CoachRmcD60 No, b/c a vertical set does not make a pocket bigger. You cannot fight pressure with pressure effectively & against wide rushers, you lose the 1/2 man relationship that keeps DL from taking an easy inside path #hogfbchat
A1: I'll piggy back on what @CoachOrtizOL said. Everything I teach is now rooted in @OLineWorld65 drive catch principle. But with a wide 9 I want my tackles to have confidence to vert. #hogfbchat
A1: with my varsity guys I do both, then I see what we are better with and go that. With my MS guys....we do good to get 101 protection down... #hogfbchat
Brian Hamilton President of the Murray State chapter of #OLineMenofMayhem and now super talented edit editor (I turned KY into a championship belt) #hogfbchat
A1 I'm a fan of the vertical set. Get depth on the kickback. Can help to identify and pick up twists and stunts. Gotta rep it a lot though in practice through various drills. #HOGFBCHAT
A1) Absolutely. Especially to my interior OL, starting with my centers. Creating that initial separation gives us more time to react to the DL. The OG’s learn it when we teach man on the backside of the half slide protection. I can’t imagine teaching pass pro w/o it. #hogfbchat
A1: We teach it as a tool for the arsenal, but not as an automatic thing. Necessary if you have a speed rush type guy. When I played we were taught an automatic 3-step “back pedal” and I was not a fan of that. #hogfbchat
A1: We mostly use lateral pass sets for pass pro and stress to our guys to protect their gap, but on the backside of our Sprint outs we teach a vertical pass set #hogfbchat
A1: I’ve been a part of teams that have and have not. Ideally I like to teach vertical pass pass set because it creates a natural pocket for the QB and does good vs a Quick DE #HogFBChat
We have in the past, but have found with our offense and quickly we want the ball out, it’s not generally the best option. Our tackles kick step, but only twice, while guards and center attack. We like how it can freeze a LB. #HogFBChat
A1: We teach more lateral sets because we want to get on the down lineman quick and keep the DL on the LOS so our QB can step up in the pocket. Will be talking to different coaches about vertical sets this weekend to learn a different way. #hogfbchat
A1 cont: separation off the ball is key to me. Get depth, get your eyes on your responsibility, and be prepared to fight. That depth off the ball gives you time to build your house and be ready to go! #HogFBChat
A1: I have been on teams that didn’t do vertical pass set because we didn’t have lineman who couldn’t get the kick step down. I got one don’t care the blocking scheme as long as dudes are getting blocked #HogFBChat
A1: for our athletes, if you've already established knee to crotch relation, there's no need to keep driving out. It all comes back to how tight a defensive player plays their gap. Double A gap players (DL/LBs) warrants a full line vertical set to pick up the stunt #HogFbChat
A1: We don't use vertical. We are more of a man/gap pass set. Man side and gap side with the back as an extra on the man side. Also in our offense our QB isn't getting deep enough to use a vertical set. #hogfbchat
A1 - No. I believe it’s a good way to get steamrolled, Fail to anchor the instep, and thus give up sacks. QB’s are better with room in the pocket anyway.
#hogfbchat
Yes and have been using it almost exclusively for over a decade. As a HS coach it allowed us to compete with smaller OL and protect as an NCAA coach it allows us to compete against elite speed and dynamic fronts #hogfbchat
Very true. But widening the pocket and keeping an inside relationship with the drive catch will prevent an inside move from@being successful. #hogfbchat
We teach it vs an athlete on the edge who is wide, if it would take a big angle set or two angle sets we want to set vertical and try to keep him on the edge when we are locked on him 1 v 1. If we have the slide it’s less critical. #HogFbChat
A1) cont…vertical sets CAN be used situationally at the HS level. You don’t have to teach one way to set. I’ve coached both ends of the spectrum when it comes to football IQ on the OL in HS and they all can grasp it. You just have to teach the Why first and foremost!! #hogfbchat
A1: We teach vertical sets, but that’s purely to teach them. Don’t really think it fits what we do schematically, as we half slide and gap protect. Just don’t think it’s fits that type of pass pro. #hogfbchat
A1: I do - primarily on backside in sprint out protection. I want backside guys to get off the LoS, create space, work inside out - take away pursuit angles. ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
A1. No. Tackles need to set the width of the pocket. Also like taking the angle to the DE and engaging him with more force. C and G need one drive off the ball and set depth of the pocket. #hogfbchat
A1: My favorite pass sets is what I call King/Queen. Tackles vertical Set the D ends while the Guard and Center are reading the 1/3 techs and the will and mike backers. The running back steps into the unconcovered whole #HogFbChat
A2: We have a TFT rule, two for two. Two OL responsible for two defenders based on half slide call given by C. If no one approaches, track TFT rule first then find work and clean up the pocket #HogFBChat
A2: check backers with your eyes. If no one comes, clean the pocket. Center check both guards if you don’t have work. Guards check inside out. #hogfbchat
A2: Keep your head on a swivel and look for work. Ear hole the defender your buddy is working on. Main thing is too make sure that backer isn’t on a delayed blitz #HogFbChat
A2: same I use for inside zone when uncovered. Set to callside and get eyes on DL hip then go from there. We use 90/10 rule to determine who is a threat to our space. If no threat, look for work and #fullslab somebody. #hogfbchat
A2: initially we want to give a hand with eyes still in our gap. If nothing shows look for work find something to clean up. Pass pro isn't passive.
#Hogfbchat
A1) cont…There must be different definitions of “vertical set.” 🤔 To me this is a very quick & abbreviated 1-2 step vertically. Used solely for quick separation against an active DL. It sounds as if some guys think vertical set as a back pedal pass pro. Not the case. #hogfbchat
Q2: Get off the line, create space...since no one is there to get half man on, scan to your side for most immediate threat to your backside , then look for someone to bury. #HogFbChat
A2: 1-2 step vert set. Look to help double team any DL with eyes on gap backer. Heard earlier in year on here about R.O.C. Can’t remember who said it to give credit, but have already been working that with guys and their eyes. #hogfbchat
Make sure your gap (for our zone side) isn’t threatened, keep your head on a swivel and violently help your buddies out. On the man side if your guys leaves head on a swivel cause somebody else is likely replacing him #hogfbchat
A2 be patient. Someone will likely cross your face. If not, help out the guy next to you. Don't overcommit though, maintain your position in case someone comes. #HOGFBCHAT
A2: give a 2 count (thousand 1 thousand 2) and then look for work. Week to week will depend where we look to support first. Majority of the time we're working inside out to help our center #HogFbChat
A2) First be ready for some kind of twister or looper coming back to you. If nothing comes at you then try to get on the same level as another OL and find work and get a full slab! Pass pro is not passive! #hogfbchat
A2) inside-outside-backside-hunt for ribs. Always set inside, then look outside. If nothing shows turn backside and find work. If not then hunt unprotected ribs. #hogfbchat
A2 think of it is someone trying to break into house if you shoot them in the portch you are going to jail if you wait till they kick open your door it’s game time #hogfbchat
A2) AAS: Alignment, Assignment, Snap count. That’s always #1. After that, be aware of where the next down lineman to the pro side is located. Backers? How does their depth and alignment compare to film study/previous snaps? If nothing comes…LOOK FOR WORK! #hogfbchat
A2 cont: To add to this, the free man(6th man) is RB responsibility. Goes opposite the slide call. TFT usually clears up any issues we may have, at which point we find work and clean heads #HogFBChat
A2: Continue to roll cookie dough in your hands ready to throw a strike. If someone leaves, someone else is coming back. And the worst thing you can do is pose for trading cards by doing nothing. Find work. #hogfbchat
A2: Basically just plan to show them the video of Quenton Nelson absolutely STONING that free rusher. I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about. #hogfbchat
A2) cont…forgot the most obvious 🤦♂️ WHAT IS THE DOWN AND DISTANCE? Proper preparation in the film room will tell you everything you need to know. DC’s are creatures of habit! Trust your eyes! #hogfbchat
A2) AAS: Alignment, Assignment, Snap count. That’s always #1. After that, be aware of where the next down lineman to the pro side is located. Backers? How does their depth and alignment compare to film study/previous snaps? If nothing comes…LOOK FOR WORK! #hogfbchat
A1: I teach vertical just not as a true 90. Slightly less intense. tailored to the DE. Want to make sure we’re staying in a powerful position ready to take fight pressure with pressure. #HogFBChat
Rule of butts and faces, if you see a butt leaving there is a face coming. Maintain a blind post inside, provide body presence to protect the next man from a late move, break down a DL late into the rush #hogfbchat
Also tell G to default to helping C when possible because he has the toughest job. That said we're moving a D1 G to C gor next year so we probably won't worry about him as much. #hogfbchat
A2: Find work! Work inside-out, but FIND WORK. Short of a sack, Nothing chaps my arse more on passpro then a unoccupied lineman defending air. Look inside - no threat. check blitz - no threat. look outside buddy tied up, HAMMER that D Lineman.⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
A2: Eyes are a huge part of it. Typically if something leaves, something is coming back. You play with your eyes so be ready for something to come (protect your gap/assignment 1st). Be ready to clean the pocket or help your guys out. Communicate! #hogfbchat
A3) throw weight off back, natural curve of back is the strongest. Post/Inside foot always up. Punch at lock-out with thumbs up fingers out. If wide, once to your hip punch closest hip, turn and run him twice as fast as he wants to go. FINISH! #hogfbchat
A3: mine aren’t 90°. Basically I tell them to draw a line in their mind from the DE’s position to the QB, then draw a line for your set where you intercept him. Then we rep the piss out of it. #hogfbchat
Q3: What are your coaching points regarding the Vertical Pass Sets? A3 inside foot first plant the post and look for work guards responsible for 1los, and tackles responsible for 2los, C check mlb
#hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A3 get out of your stance fast, kick slide twice is fast and deep as possible, shoulders Square, knee to crotch, eyes on near pec, elbows in, hands up.
A3: Imagine there is a string from the DL to the QB and you have to get on the string to cut off the angle of the DL. Good strike with the hands when you get in front and shoot head and chest back to stop his charge. #hogfbchat
A2: They definitely need to find work, but doing so responsibly. I don’t want an athlete to go to clean up the pocket and be out of control and then miss a late blitzer. Shoulders square, head on a swivel. #hogfbchat
A3) 2 Quick, abbreviated steps. 6 inches max. Anchor in. Don’t collapse the pocket. It’s not a complicated technique, so don’t treat it as such. Repping on air daily is as effective of a tool as any. Drills can progress from there. #hogfbchat
A3: #hogfbchat Even a “Vertical” set isn’t truly vertical. Draw a line to the QB depth. Keep inside foot inside of that line. Keep shoulders square if he continues vertical past the junction point of your set and his line he’ll run by the QB. Make him take the long way.
A3: “Sit in the chair” & “Shit in the Woods” are a couple of my favorite coaching points. Can’t over extend, have to be able to post up and cut off the inside move as well. #hogfbchat
A3: Get depth off the line. Shoulders square to the line. Work inside half of DL, keep weight back and strike violently when the time comes. It's passive/aggressive. Let the fight come to you then win the fight. #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: Q2: What are your coaching points for Offensive Line when they don't have any defenders immediately approach in pass pro? #Hogfbchat
A3 #hogfbchat keep shoulder square to LOS as long as possible...post foot toe pointed to LOS will help keep shoulder square, by 3rd kick defender should show his intentions
A3: Post foot drags the ground. Back foot kick with ball of foot striking as your move. Strike with quick blows to near number. If they lean inside it’s now a board drill and game on. Once they’re even with you punch near hip and run them as far as they want to go. #hogfbchat
A3: Shoulders square, maintain relationship to guy next to you, establish inside hands on the defender. Target the punch, don’t just throw hands and hope to hit him #hogfbchat
I’ve had success with it. A lot of time spent walking through and learning angles. Even drew it in the board a few times. You really need to teach the intricacy of it to the guys. But if you spend the time it becomes second nature. Paul Alexander.... again. #hogfbchat
Get out of stance. Aiming point is INSIDE v of the defender neck. We dictate what the defender does. Don’t get him a 2 way go. Defending on what type of defender depends on whether are sets are wider or deeper. Deeper if he is speed and I need to beat him to his spot. #HogFbChat
A3 con’t #hogfbchat key near point for two drive/catches, if you see the little number (sleeve) o/s hand punch and take a cut off step to straighten his hoop. Close the door for his counter with i/s hand to hip/armpit and look to finish when he tries to run the hoop.
A3. Don't teach true vertical set but tell guys you have to match their width with your depth. Working to outside knee to crotch relationship. #hogfbchat
Simple twist drill. Or half line pickups. Depending on the front we see and where we are calling protection for that week dictates if it is a 4 man slide or 3 man slide. #HogFbChat
Coolest thing ever for me is participating in the same #HOGFBCHAT with my favorite center of all time @KevinMawae . I looked up to him as a player and now as a coach! #Legendary
A4. I like a 2o2 pass pro drill. Have the defensive players throw their stunts at the offensive players and force them to keep their eyes up in their set and work together. #HogFbChat
A4: either a modified inside drill or line them all up and point to the DL or LB coming and at the snap only he is live...makes OL focus on who is coming #hogfbchat
A4 We work lots of 1/2 line blitz pick up. G/T must work together and communicate. We run a lot of blitz pickup during team as well. We see a lot of “A” gap blitz to stop run. I work “circle of death” which is a punch timing drill that my kids “enjoy” to simulate a LB #hogfbchat
A4 cont. attack the looper. 3 bags in front of Man. One crosses face, other loops. Read/hand off the spike. Attack the looper before he gets there. Really helps with their eyes #hogfbchat
A4: we do one called pass off drill. Forces them to handle one rusher and then accept a looper. We do a blitz pick up where I’ll draw cards for scout team to do what our opponent that week is gonna bring to us. #hogfbchat
A4: Half line drills are always good for that kind of stuff. Live fire with all 5 and a back is useful as well. Anything you can do to build trust between both groups is a plus. #hogfbchat
A4) Film study and understanding stunt combinations before we hit the field. Walkthrough, then try to get as close to game speed 1/2 man combinations #hogfbchat
A4: Front recognition - walking through stunts and blitzes, half line pick ups, full speed drills. Really anytime you can expose them to the stunt or blitz is a great way to rep pass pro vs those things. #hogfbchat
A4) Blitz pickup period is a must at least twice a week imo. But we also have a “Wave drill” where OL will work laterally between two guys and pick up a rusher and then pass it off to the next guy then immediately go back to pick up 2nd rusher to pass off other side #HogFbChat
A4) cont…And honestly, one of the best ways to prevent games from beating you is to know what’s coming and when. FILM STUDY. The kids won’t be surprised and will be more confident during practice that week in prepping to stop it! #hogfbchat
A3: @OLineWorld65 3 Tenets of PassPro- 1) Get your A$$ out of your stance 2) Create space 3) Work inside out. The rest is mechanics/foundational (hips square, drive back off front foot staying powerful - low / chest up, catch w/instep of back foot PUNCH/reset! #hogfbchat
A4: Walk-thru pre practice, then 2 man bump switch with defenders, same drill with 3 man for slide side. Guy on looper must get depth and bump other man off, overtaking guys knifing. #hogfbchat
A4: everything we do is again rooted in our TFT rule. Basic full-line blitz pickup repped daily is all we use. Drill TFT more than chasing etc. #HogFBChat
A4: seems like just about everybody is doing the same stuff essentially. Glad we aren’t treating it like rocket science and are able to keep it simple. #hogfbchat
A4: 5v5, if you have enough quality players to give a good look. Throw anything and everything at them preseason, then opponent's most common blitzes in season. I like to make it look as close to what they'll see in an actual game as possible #hogfbchat
A4. Work team pass pro v our defenses stunts. Even if it doesn't match what we're gonna see it gives a us a look at game speed. Our backups running scout show us opponent stunts. #hogfbchat
A4) cont…Throw one or two “worst-case scenario” blitzes/games at them. Explain why it’s described as such and how we plan on attacking it. Makes everything else seem so much easier to manage! #hogfbchat
We just had The Man comment on our chat. Are you guys doing everything YOU can to help your players? #FISTfootball#hogfbchat#OLPBuiltToDominate
Also... pick up his books! Just bought both of them for my summer reading!
And that is a wrap! Thank you for participating in the faster hour on Twitter! We at the #hogfbchat appreciate you all for being here and making Mondays great! #AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo
A4: con’t #hogfbchat big cue we use is sink/search. When your man leaves the LOS we want to squeeze the direction he is going to contact. (Search) and sink to let the pincher we can’t see cross our face back to our kick foot. Don’t want to get hip/shoulder knifed.
A4) Half-man SKAQ from a knee, Hip to hip switch, Trade crush....if all OL get off the ball, create space & keep Half-man relationship, all that's left is to jam DL together as they switch. #HogFBChat
Not a drill but a RULE to drill in 2v2 or 1/2 line. Only the looper can call “Switch”. Never pass a defender to air. If you’re locked on the penetrator stay with the win until you hear and FEEL THE SWITCH #hogfbchat
