Cara from Pittsburgh, PA - middle school mathematics. Glad to be joining the chat again after having to miss the last few weeks coaching soccer ⚽️ #formativechat
#formativechat@katyisd I’m so glad that you hosted a webinar at our conference. Everyone needs to learn about the capabilities of @goformative and use them to grow our students! @EBESBees

A1 Used @quizizz and @plickers to gather data for skill based small groups. Also 4 square math problems to do spiral checks on skills. Informative for smaller instructional groupings. #formativechat
A1: I’m not in the classroom anymore but one of my teachers tried being way more intentional with her questioning during class. She was able to get more in depth data about what her students knew and did not know #formativechat
A1 - The combination of using min-whiteboards and @goformative was something new for me and I loved the results. Great combination of data from multiple choice and show your work that gave me awesome formative data to help guide my teaching and student learning #formativechat
A1: I tried to have my students peer review each other’s work as they worked in groups on math activities. Definitely a work in progress but there were some great conversations taking place at times! #formativechat
#formativechat A1 I finally broke down and used the recorded option with my students to show me their metacognition connected to skills that I assessed. I found they were open, but they asked for privacy while responding! That made me happy! #BeTheChange@katyisd#geinspires
A1 This year I used @msonenote to have students write their weekly thoughts in dialogue journals. This ended up serving as a formative activity because my Ss freely shared their learning successes and challenges. #formativechat

absolutely, I just created a grid to use with my @TED_ED club that I started, building confidence and sharing our passions, fears and plans for summer #formativechat
A1. I long-term subbed this semester. For me teaching was something new. However I did try an idea I got from Hacking Literacy. I had Ss write quotes on sticky notes. Before leaving they shared with w/a partner and then placed on the whiteboard as an exit ticket #formativechat
A1: I have tried the technique "reject self report" combined with cold calling this year for most of my formative assessment. It's eye opening when done consistently because it truly shows how much students are and are not understanding in terms of instruction. #formativechat
Yes, I wrote a blog about it, and love the story behind it, #pbl school, so many opportunities for authentic learning. @mrmatera did an interview with @gimkit creator #xplap#formativechat
In reply to
@cooper1503, @gimkit, @mrmatera, @gimkit
A1: More focused comments on written products. More closely related to students' intentions and purpose. Seemed more effective to focus on intent than deficiencies. #formativechat
A1 Continued: Key insight for me was what @dylanwiliam has said on this subject, "students do not always (or even often?) learn what we teach, and we had better find out what they did learn before we teach them anything else." #formativechat
A1 Used more tech to assess learning at the beginning. EdPuzzle and Socrative were my go tos this year for that, now want to explore other tools to do it also
#formativechat
A1: I’m not in the classroom anymore but one of my teachers tried being way more intentional with her questioning during class. She was able to get more in depth data about what her students knew and did not know #formativechat
A1: Small chats with students on their writing as they worked on writing assignments. It helped me understand what issues needed to be addressed as a class and individually while they worked. #formativechat
A2 I want to keep learning more ways to assess Ss, best practices and ways that enable me to assess regularly and provide the most authentic, timely and purposeful feedback for Ss #formativechat
A2: Allowing the students to take ownership of their learning and teaching them how to have genuine conversations about their work in class #formativechat
A2: Although I've been more intentional and pointed in my feedback, this is still an area of growth for me. I need to devise a better system that will not take as much time. Though then again #kidsdeserveit#formativechat
A2: I want to get quicker with formative assessments on student writing. I take too long. I have been receiving feedback from other teachers as to ways to make it quicker, so I have some strategies for next year. #formativechat
A2 I want to build stronger relationships with Ss so that the F2F formative has more meaning for both of us! The tech will always be available and "new". I have a limited time with the Kiddos! #formativechat
A2. I know I made a zillion mistakes this semester. One I didn't formative assess every day. I'm hoping for an opportunity to correct my mistakes this year #formativechat
A2 Involve Ss more in creating ways to show their understanding. I have given choice in some things, but I want to make that more universal. #formativechat
A2: Keeping things "cheap." I want my formative assessment to be as simple and replicable as possible so that I will do it consistently throughout the year. This could be as simple as listening more intently during turn and talks. #formativechat
A2 - To continue to make learning the priority of grades. To improve self and peer assessment. To provide more choices for Ss to show their learning and understanding. #formativechat
A strategy I've been using is that, if students choose to Resubmit an assignment, they must indicate what they've addressed from my comments or the assessment rubric. Ensures that they are using my feedback to improve. #formativechat
Or they do read it, but they do not necessarily act on it. I remember loving the comments left by my Ts, but that did not mean I actually used their feedback. #formativechat
A2 Next SY i want to get more buyin from Ss when it comes to FAs. I want to move away from yay we don't have homework to I know what I need to work on and what i have mastered b/c of feedback #formativechat
#formativechat A2 Because I will teach math for the first time in the last ten years, I’m really excited about the whiteboard options, and I intend to practice during this break. I’m moving from TEKS to Common Core Standards in HI, but I have my @goformative, so I’ll be great!
We all make mistakes Tim, I know I make tons every single day, always learning in them, and we keep moving forward, reminds me of this #formativechat#learning
So true, I make it a point to have conversations when I hand them back, even if brief, and if I don't get to it right away, I make sure to find time soon . #formativechat
Perhaps we can "bake" it into the assignment directions. Maybe ask for a proposal where a student indicates her purpose/intentions for the written product. #formativechat
A2 continued: Also, I want to actually use the formative assessment to make more mid-lesson adjustments to my lessons. Small-chunking each step of the way, and reteaching when necessary...not just plowing ahead because it's on the lesson plan. #formativechat
A2 Collaborating coaching myself and colleagues to do a better job inviting student questions in science and making room to investigate those ?s within the curriculum #formativechat
Funny. Today I a colleague asked me for advice on a Ss for whom I am "the bomb". My reply was we do have a strong relationship, but that does not mean he does any work for me. I'm just as stuck as you are on this kid. Don't know what to do about it... #formativechat
A2: An area for my improvement would be in using formative feedback strategically. So effective when I'm able to provide the right feedback at the right time for a student. Can really change the trajectory toward mastery! #formativechat
Time for question 3: What's something you learned at the end of this year that you wish you had started with at the beginning of the year? #formativechat
#formativechat A2 I also intend to be a @goformative Certified Teacher! I’m about to loose connection, so I have to run! Count on me for next week because I love my @goformative tool! It’s truly been there for me to grow my students and myself! See you next week!
A2) I want to leverage technology to work on developing more student agency. I want to get to the point where students choose their own literary adventure. #formativechat
great reminder to be flexible in our lessons, have to make time for unexpected teachable moments, or for fun too, that can pop up in . a lesson #formativechat
I really noticed a difference by getting rid of the HW, nothing to be copied and Ss spent time practicing or creating more meaningful work #formativechat
#formativechat a2 After seeing Word 10 has read aloud function; I am searching for an app to do the same. Ss can sign, voice, caption, the whole package. Allow for maximum differientiation in their assessment #auslan#tesoloz#21c#learning@skymazef3
A3: Posing questions to cut to the heart of a student's learning. A question can be so more effective and purposeful than a declarative statement about their work. As teachers, we can become too accustomed to establishing declarations rather than questions! #formativechat
A3: By the end of the year, students were a part of the creative process-- helping me pick apps to use in class and helping decide how we used them. There was more buy in on lessons, and the atmosphere was more fun. I will begin the year this way next year. #formativechat
This is a great goal! I wonder if starting with the written feedback that they give is a good place. In my experience, it was a little easier to first learn how to improve that asynchronous feedback #formativechat
A3: PBL protocols and planning methods that I can use to help my work with teachers to help them leverage edtech without all of the stress of having to plan in a silo #formativechat
Time for question 3: What's something you learned at the end of this year that you wish you had started with at the beginning of the year? #formativechat
A3: I can’t think of anything specific but with all the amazing updates from @goformative lately, I will be busy all summer working on new and improved Formatives for my students!! #formativechat#thanks
that is what I want to hear from Ss, so often I hear that they are not reading, don't enjoy it, I remember the books I read in HS, and actually had to read, we didnt have tech ;) Process vs.. product #formativechat
I have enjoyed using Flipgrid as a formative assessment this year. The kids love it and it allows me to hear their thoughts and what they learned and still want to learn #formativechat
A3) I've done a lot of work at improving my pedagogical approaches for cognitive differences. I've become hyper-aware of the impact that I have on my learning disabled students, and I wish I had been more aware at the start of the year. #formativechat
I appreciate that word "weave", I think it is key to recognize that we are not just layering one more thing on top of teaching, it needs to be weaved into what we do, and can be in many ways. Great point David! #formativechat
Time for question 3: What's something you learned at the end of this year that you wish you had started with at the beginning of the year? #formativechat
A3: Teaching all, but especially my 5th to organize their Drive, and have many checks along the way. As they were preping portfolios I realized how many of them had a big old mess of Untitled work. I see most again next year, so we'll spend 2 weeks doing that! #formativechat
I know, but you applied it and created that experience for your students, so that makes all of the difference. We can read a lot, but what actions do we take, you made the choice to implement it :) #formativechat
A3: I’ve enjoyed using @Flipgrid and @padlet as a formative assessment this year. Students can share in a way that suits them best and I can keep track easily #Formativechat
A3 - How to use @goformative better. Throughout this year especially since becoming at Formative Certified Educator I have a way better understanding of the tools available and how to use them. Thanks @goformative community. #formativechat
Time for question 3: What's something you learned at the end of this year that you wish you had started with at the beginning of the year? #formativechat
This! Organizing drive and have Ss setup Google Keep and that a lot of Ss at my school don't have their emails setup. This is happening beginning of the year #formativechat

Thank you so much for joining us in #formativechat everyone! It was energizing to hear all the awesome things you've accomplished this year and your goals for next year! #NeverStopLearning
#formativechat A3 After doing some reverse chats on Twitter where the answer was posed and we put up the question; discovered that it was way harder than I thought and pushed my brain further. Made me think about the terms in the answer too. @skymazef3#question#learn
#formativechat See the there is the answer and the question would be....
How has Twitter chats changed you? Augh, sure there is a better question to respect yr great answer, but you can see it does push the thinking @skymazef3
A1: Small chats with students on their writing as they worked on writing assignments. It helped me understand what issues needed to be addressed as a class and individually while they worked. #formativechat
For me it helps me trim the fat and reduce my teaching, assessments, and overall educational philosophy into something as simple, focused, and meaningful as possible. #formativechat
I teach 9th and 10th, but can do a pre-assessment paragraph assignment and get a baseline. From there, I can use their essays. I have attempted this before, but fell to the wayside. Will try again. #formativechat
