#4thchat Archive

#4thchat is a hashtag for teachers or anyone to talk about educational issues relating to 4th grade. Using #4thchat will create a network of 4th grade teachers or teachers working with 9-10 year olds across the world.     A1: We have always spent time focusing on Biographies - even in the younger grades. Kids even choose to read them with the great "Who Was" series. #4thchat

    A1 and 1a Students love reading biographies, so I do a unit where we all read different types of biographes, so they have a chance to choose them during the rest of the year. They learn about others and think about their lives. #4thchat

    A2: Most recently, we read Love That Dog by Sharon Creech, where the mc wrote an author. We bridged that to studying bios of authors, and eventually others. A River of Words about William Carlos Williams was amazing. #4thchat

    A1: #4thchat, biographies is one of the genre units we study, there are 10 units so about a week is what we spend on the genre.

    A2: Since I don't have my own classroom...I have seen other classes this year have Ss select indiv from our state & research those folks. Mass is full of such historical figures. #4thchat

    #4thchat I would encourage anyone remotely interested to give it a go. Google really has done a nice job on the certification. It's not really a test but a to do list to show you can do it. No multiple choice tests. I learned a lot going through the process.

    A teacher in our school actually has Ss interview teachers & then write bio poems for them. They share the poems at an all school assembly. Kind of nice, really @srintchr #4thchat

    It is challenging to get them to read something from way back. My students really LOVED the Little House in the Big Woods (not considered biography) but were fascinated by how difficult life was back then. #4thchat Helped we read a lot together & discussed.
