Join in the #HISDAdminChat conversation each Sunday night at 6pm CST as we discuss the challenges we face and the successes we celebrate while learning and leading as an HISD Administrator.
Lauren Dill from @ELLevationED living in N. TX and I will share whatâs itâs like working with principals - a unique and highly competitive group that consistently care about kids over process! #HISDAdminChat
Erika Carter from âTHEâ Betsy Ross Elementary and one thing folks donât know is that the last thing we want to do is write folks up...so not fun! #HISDAdminChat
Hello #HISDAdminChat Iâm Maggy, AP @DoganElementary and am so excited to join tonight with more characters for my answers :) One fact is that leadership can be lonely!
Iâm Amanda, AP @Braeburn_HISD. I feel like most people donât realize how many urgent issues can come up in the span of a day. It makes scheduling tough! #HISDAdminChat
Happy Sunday! Darryl. Principal at El Bosque del Norte. Fact: There is a pressure to be as close to perfect as possible in everything that you do for the students and the campus. đŻ #HISDAdminChat
Angel Wilson. Cornelius Elementary. Nothing is ever really completed. We manage moving parts daily and we really do think about things over and over and consider everyone's viewpoint more often than not when making decisions. Oh and we are burden bearers lol #HISDAdminChat

Hello everyone! Iâm Errica from @DoganElementary! One thing I feel many people donât know about the principal position is that each day, one is wrestling w/ how to improve the educational experience on the campus for Ts and Ss. And each night, theyâre prayed for. #HISDAdminchat
Angel Wilson. Cornelius Elementary. Nothing is ever really completed. We manage moving parts daily and we really do think about things over and over and consider everyone's viewpoint more often than not when making decisions. Oh and we are burden bearers lol #HISDAdminChat
A1: doesnât feel accurate to me. Good principals can and should insulate their school from outside forces, and I donât think âmiddle managerâ conveys that. #hisdadminchat

A1: Depends on the District and the level of autonomy the principal has. The more trust a principal has by Central Office the less true I find this statement. #HISDAdminChat

A1: Absolutely not. Iâm much more of a teacher and instructional leader than I will ever be a manager. Admin folks at HMW can help with that stuff! #HISDAdminchat
A1: I don't think it's accurate if we truly accept our roles as leaders. Many times upper management askes ME what needs to be done and what support I need from them to accomplish goals or problem solve. #hisdadminchat
A1) So we are leaders for sure however we absolutely manage people and stuff (compliance). The art is in how you balance them & make your choices. #HISDAdminChat
A1: Yes, it can be deemed appropriate because the role calls for one to be a student advocate & a teacher developer. You also manage all staff, engage parents & community, while utilizing central office resources w/fidelity #HISDAdminchat
A2: I think the word manager has a negative connotation but I DO feel we are in the middle. We have people we answer to on all sides.. #inthemiddle#HISDAdminChat
Breakthrough Coach had me re-evaluating my life and role, and sometimes we are Managers. Coaches stand on the sidelines and make sure the right people are in place. I consider myself a leader and manager at times. Managing teams of people who support our vision #HISDAdminChat

A2. I am convinced I am going to always do whatâs best for my kids and my community. I will think about getting my hand slapped later! đđŠđđž #HISDAdminChat
A2: Iâm not so sure that I protect it all that well. I often find myself kicking against it for the good of my kids...donât tell anybody! đ#HISDAdminChat
A1: Coming from a teacher and parent I dont think of principals as middle management, they are the leaders that guide and help build the campus to become great. #HISDAdminChat
đđžđđžđđž then get up and fight for what is right. I remind myself daily not to put the convenience of adults or initiatives above the value of kids. Our scholars are not numbers and their futures are not to play with. We can only survive if they do. #HISDAdminChat
Making sure all decisions are for the benefit of students. Prioritizing and knowing which bureaucratic responsibilities need my attention during the day or can be handled after ss are gone. #HISDAdminChat
Eric Tingle @SugarGroveHISD. Sorry I'm late.
A2. This is a forever work in progress! Data is my answer. If you have proof that it works, people will support it.
#hisdadminchat
A2: Before protecting that stability, make sure you know WHY you are doing that. If the answer is, âItâs always been this way,â thatâs not good enough. #hisdadminchat
A2: Its an art. To some degree you must believe in the changes and see how the support the kids. Then you create the vision and the culture for the campus. Itâs not for the faint at heart! #HISDAdminChat
A2: I think balance comes when you allow yourself to "zoom out" and see the big picture. Then you can figure out how to advocate for change in a way that leads down the path of least resistance because it matches district goals. #hisdadminchat
A2: I think the word manager has a negative connotation but I DO feel we are in the middle. We have people we answer to on all sides.. #inthemiddle#HISDAdminChat
A2: The key is knowing your school community wellâtheir experiences, their expertise, their needs, their lack and their goals. Once you have a clear picture of who you are serving, you will know exactly what to advocate for and what to steer clear of. This is đ#HISDAdminChat
A2) If you are pushing for your kids and challenging the system to be better than you can walk that line. It's when bureaucracy fights back to stay the same that frustration comes (because kids miss out). #HISDAdminChat

Okay, this is more of a read and learn topic for me. Iâm soaking up the knowledge these great principals are putting out. So, Iâll be tweeting less and reflecting more tonight...taking a backseat to listen. #HISDAdminchat
A3) I work hard to debunk the "stiff & aloof" stereotype (1950s type principal). Visible, approachable & positive - that's the juice for me. #HISDAdminChat
A3: Trying to debunk that we're always in "Gotcha" mode, especially when I visit a classroom. I want teachers to feel excited to share their classroom with me, not panic when they see me enter the room. #hisdadminchat
A3: Always in the office. I make a point to do morning and afternoon duty and sometimes lunch duty as well. Iâm not too good to do any job on campus. #HISDAdminchat
A1: Iď¸ believe leaders naturally encourage people to practice their strengths aligned to a vision while a manager simply focuses on âmanagingâ an organized structure #HISDAdminChat
A2: Always know your WHY. Be mindful of your setting, audience, and tone. It's not what you say, but when you say it, who you say it to, and how you say it. #HISDAdminChat
A3) I work hard to debunk the "stiff & aloof" stereotype (1950s type principal). Visible, approachable & positive - that's the juice for me. #HISDAdminChat
A3: I think there is a stereotype that APs donât necessarily know instruction. I think maybe the role used to be that way, but Iâm in classrooms and coaching every day! #hisdadminchat
A3. When parents say, âOh I didnât know you were the Principal! I always see you!â #debunked Be visible, Be reflective, Be honest, Be transparent! #HISDAdminChat
A3. The ''forgotten what it is like to be in the classroom principal.'' Our administrative team just completed #shadowastudent and we are exploring ways to shadow a teacher soon. #HISDAdminChat
A3: I will also say as a vendor now - I work super hard to be seen as a trusted advisor. I am not trying to sell you anything - just trying to make your life easier. #HISDAdminChat
School principals are FAR REMOVED from the classroom and demand things they never did as T's or they demand things they are not competent enough to model and lead first. I try to always remain a student of the practice and also learn from my T's as much as I canđ #HISDAdminChat

A3: âshe forgot whatâs itâs like to be in the classroomâ Iď¸ donât ever want my Ts to think this, so I make it a point to teach at least once a month #HISDAdminchat
