Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to #INeLearn Chat. We will begin with introductions. I'm Michelle with the @INeLearn team and I'll be your moderator tonight as our Two Techie Teachers should be enjoying their spring break this week!
Tonight's #INeLearn Chat topic is one we can all discuss no matter what our role in education, but we especially welcome the classroom teachers' voices! If lurking is more your style, that's okay, but don't hesitate to jump in anytime!
Hi all. I’m Kevin from Indianapolis @LCHSBears. I teach biology, Earth/Space Science and serve as an eCoach. Just finished school for the week today. #INelearn
I'm Amy, and I'm a coach from North Posey. It's definitely a tough choice, but I'll always be an art teacher at heart. Gimme a chalkboard, and let's practice some shading! #INeLearn
We’re going to cut right to the chase with tonight’s topic! Q1 will feed the rest of our chat. Here it is!
#INeLearn Remember R is for Response, but accept Answers too :)
Hi! I'm Dianna, the technology instructional specialist for @ClayCommSchools. I'd choose a tablet with question marks, a smiley face, a tree with roots, and a smartphone. 😊 #INelearn

I expect these responses to be interesting because not only are we naming perceptions; we’re also defining what tech integration can be. #INeLearn#INeLearn
R1: I think it is hard to group all Ts together. Some see it as "one more thing" others "a necessary evil" and others fall under the "best thing ever" category. Personal experiences and building culture really play a role in T persectives #INeLearn
Good evening #INeLearn! Mike from @wearrrichmond | Leader of Leaders | co-creator of #RCSeLearn Twitter Chat | Member of the #RCSNextGen Cadre |Tablet with a lock screen of my kids.
R1 - We've spent the last 4 years helping schools make the leap to e-learning in Math, ditching the textbook. Younger teachers jump right in - digital natives. Others are hesitant and struggle with trusting the technology. Every year gets easier. #IneLearn
A1: It totally depends on the teacher! I embraced the power that tech holds but others are resistant. I think the biggest factor in making tech integration as powerful as it can be is by training and coaching. #inelearn
Tech integration is measurable. Do you agree? There are a number of frameworks that we can use to determine transformational integration. I’m going to reference the RAT model https://t.co/sp5NICrXvj which is fairly simplistic. #INeLearn
R1 I'm finding that many are very excited about the prospect of technology in the classroom once they get over the fear of the unknown. Seeing that transformation in a teacher is just as exciting as seeing a lightbulb moment for a student. #INeLearn
You all have ID'd some good ones. There are three broad themes we are going to look at when it comes to perceptions. Let’s take them on with the next three questions! #INeLearn#INeLearn
R1: Integration takes a lot of time. Some are willing to put forward the effort, others don’t wanna. Some see it as “how can I take the worksheet and get the kids to use it with their paper weight.” Others are looking at it as redefinition of learning #INelearn
For R2: Let’s think about the teacher’s role in the classroom, how Ts/Ss and Ss/Ss interact, assessment, instructional preparation, and how administrative tasks like collecting/returning work and grading are managed. #INeLearn#INeLearn
A2: Oh my goodness! My teaching has changed so much! I am no longer confined by 4 walls and a text book. My students are collaborating like never before. All of my students are finding their creative side and practice critical thinking skills. I adore tech. #inelearn
R2- I see technology as a way to capture formative assessment data—questioning, rich tasks more quickly and take instructional action more quickly. #INeLearn
R2 When we think intentionally about integration as it relates to Blooms/DOK-then we really start to see some amazing things happen. Creativity blossoms. #INelearn
R2: Teachers can see tech contributing to their instruction with REAL TIME DATA. The information we can glean from assessments allows for intentional remediation and immediate filling of gaps. #IneLearn
R2 We need more characters for this answer! But my #1 is the way responsibility for learning/finding answers has shifted from teachers to students. Students are empowered by tech. Teachers become guides and cheerleaders. #INeLearn
I like how it allows me to interact with my Ss more...I can also personalize things a little easier w/o making a big deal about modifications. Ss can also work together more. #INeLearn
#INeLearn A2 I saw the integration in initially as a way to connect my Ss to experts who could share their stories with my Ss. We have continued to expand this program in all our SS classes. Also, we have expanded opportunities for our elementary Ss to go beyond classroom walls
For R3: There is a lot to consider under this umbrella: learning activities, thinking processes, knowledge transfer, Ss motivation and attitudes, and the learning environment. #INeLearn |P.S. Feel free to spend more time diving deeper on Q2
#INeLearn A2 I saw the integration initially as a way to connect my Ss to experts who could share their stories with my Ss. We have continued to expand this program in all our SS classes. Also, we have expanded opportunities for our elementary Ss to go beyond classroom walls
R2: I use it as a means for Ss to create something that they couldn’t do with traditional means and share with an authentic audience in ways they would NEVER share otherwise. Ss final products are higher quality. #INelearn
R2: Tech allows them to not have to be the expert but more of a facilitator/guide/mentor/coach. It allows for more immediate and meaningful feedback with ease and helps to reallocate time so there is more time with kids to have true conversations. #INeLearn
R3 Ts need to teach/model for Ss how to match different tech apps and platforms so they match the task at hand. They need to show them the subtle differences in how they interact in the places they go online for research/learning/collaborating. #INelearn
R2: as a T I felt empowered by the ability to bring the world to my Spanish classroom. Many in our rural community don't get an opportunity to experience the world (or even what our great state) has to offer. #INeLearn
R3- collaboration allowed through technology impacts the more traditional learning practices and enables students to be college and career ready. #INeLearn
R3: wait for it...5Cs. Ss can collaborate, create, do critical thinking, communicate, and work with community members. Having the ability to learn more information from an expert in the field is powerful. Authentic audiences also. #INelearn
#INeLearn A2 We have been able to collaborate with classes outside of the US. This year, our HS CE debated with a class from Monterrey Mexico over current events. On Wed 4/4, @1988project sociology class will be discussing gender inequality with a class from Argentina 🇦🇷
R3: Tech allows us as Ts to apply principles of Universal Design for Learning. Allowing for multiple means of expression, representation, and engagement to help all learners. #INeLearn
I don't think we realize what a serious game changer this is! The idea really dawned on me when I was in a science lab one day and the T was running around repeating herself at every table #INeLearn
R2: Ss feel empowered and have more accountability for their learning. Students are immediately opening sites like Kiddle to find As to Qs independently. #INeLearn
R2 squared: the ability to provide immediate, meaningful feedback to assignments or be accessible to my Ss after hours, S ability to collaborate in real time on assignments. The list is endless! #INeLearn
R3: Because Feedback can be much more streamlined there is the potential for Ss to have multiple “takes” with an Assignment. So the do-feedback-do cycle can have a “tighter” loop. And there are ways to have peers give feedback too. #CloudAssignments#INeLearn
Yes! So do admins. If being a "A" school is the end-all, be-all or test scores are the only thing that matter - the shift is super difficult. #INeLearn
Q4: How do/could Ts see tech integration as contributing to curriculum goals? #INeLearn In terms of curriculum goals, consider knowledge and concepts, experiences, and processes or procedures. We can also lump in content: digital materials and resources.
R3: again, it is not just giving them a device and away they go. We MUST provide PD for Ts and Ss. It takes time. Assuming Ss know how to use tech is a misconception. Must provide #DigCit for both Ts and Ss to make it worthwhile #INelearn
I definitely see it. I've flipped instruction in my Alg II classes this semester and sometimes I'll see Ss re-watching the video for help when we are working on the practice set in class. #INeLearn
R4- with the transition to ILEARN, we are discussing how to assess computer science and media literacy standards. Technology changes the way we can assess what those standards intend. #INeLearn
R4 "Experiences" really stood out to me. I think about sending my students on a virtual field trip using @googlearts to the @MuseumModernArt. Never would have been possible without tech. #INeLearn
R4: Content curation & creation are huge right now for Ts facing loss of textbook resources. Someone mentioned this earlier, but students can now be partners in curating content. This is an amazing shift in edu! #INeLearn
R4: We are (among other things) trying to ramp up our DOK in math. Desmos Activities are a walking, talking DOK 3 machine. Saves mucho stress on Ts trying to create DOK 3 activities from scratch. #inelearn
A wealth of knowledge is at your Ss fingertips with tech! It allows you to go deeper, reteach, meet different learning styles, and create experiences you didn’t even know were possible! #INeLearn
R4: Our @VimmeLearning Ts are continually setting goals for classroom averages on cumulative assessments. Beauty of this goal: creates a sense of community, as Ss help one another to increase classroom average.#IneLearn
R4: it isn’t simply taking a formative assessment. How can Ss create a video that is uploaded to @YouTube to help fourth graders learn about genetic diseases? What about creating a website showing Pythagorean Theorem? How about a @Flipgrid explaining Anne Frank #INelearn
Screens create a shift in our literacy skills-especially in terms of focus and perseverance...there is a need to teach not to click through materials. #INeLearn
R4- with the transition to ILEARN, we are discussing how to assess computer science and media literacy standards. Technology changes the way we can assess what those standards intend. #INeLearn
R4: Relevant content. As a bio teacher I think tech and the potential of OER and VR could really help students understand concepts that they can't see. I'd like to think that it has the potential for us to dig deeper, too
#INeLearn
R4: Tech helps support a deeper & more personal opportunity to be tied to the curriculum. This is possible because Ss can interact more easily with individuals and situations in real time. #INeLearn
R4: We are (among other things) trying to ramp up our DOK in math. Desmos Activities are a walking, talking DOK 3 machine. Saves mucho stress on Ts trying to create DOK 3 activities from scratch. #inelearn
R4: hopefully an invaluable resource to meet goals other say 1 more thing on their plate. Suggestion: start with how techology can help you first instead of last.#INeLearn
Great point @techbrarianDSC and I should note that we don't expect Ts to be experts overnight either! That's why there's the Digital Content Workshop Tour for beginners https://t.co/iKCEpVCAMH#INeLearn
R4: Content curation & creation are huge right now for Ts facing loss of textbook resources. Someone mentioned this earlier, but students can now be partners in curating content. This is an amazing shift in edu! #INeLearn
I'm getting carried away in the chat and need to remind myself that I'm moderating tonight! Next Q coming up...here's a visual of the TAM model #INeLearn
R4: I love that using tech lends itself to a more collaborative way to map curriculum. Hopefully Ts don't feel as if they have to follow the roadmap of the textbook #INeLearn
Q5 Q5: Considering the TAM model, how do we help Ts work through perceptions to reach intention to use, so that they actually integrate tech in a transformative way? #INeLearn
R4: I don’t want to offend anyone here tonight but skills that we are teaching kids with tech are going to last far longer than any test that I give a student at any point. It’s about career readiness. 3D printing/manufacturing skills, video creation, etc. #INelearn
R4 Curriculum goals are fulfilled by technology because students participate in one another’s learning, share in responsibilities, have custom learning environments, can build skills beyond the lesson....let me count the ways! #INeLearn
Gladly 😎
Check out https://t.co/RbZxCalTxG to start. There are pre-made activities on site, and it's super easy to make your own. There's also a handful of good activity banks online. #INeLearn
Good approach Lori! I have heard it said repeatedly and believe that we need to consider the digital foundational and not a piece-it makes a world of difference #INeLearn
R4: hopefully an invaluable resource to meet goals other say 1 more thing on their plate. Suggestion: start with how techology can help you first instead of last.#INeLearn
It's a major shift in thinking. We don't need to deliver content like we did in the past when we were the keepers of the content. We need to teach transferable skills. #INeLearn
R5: If I showed that TAM model to most teachers, they would immediately shut down. Teaching effective integration shouldn’t feel intimidating. #INeLearn
R4: Allowing students to collaborate, share, and respond to students opinions using book talks among other topics in curriculum. Widening their view on books and experience new authors. #INeLearn
Really enjoying tonight's #INeLearn chat. Sorry to cut out early, but motherhood is calling. Thanks for sharing all of your awesome thoughts #INeLearn friends. Looking forward to reading them later!
Hi everyone joining mid chat! Nadine Gilkison Tech Integration Specialist in Franklin Township. I’ll be responding to chat tweets from Q1 to catch up 🤓❤️#INeLearn
R5 I'm learning that teachers needs to experience the benefits of tech as if they're Ss. I taught a @ClassFlow lesson about how to create content in Classflow. Bombed. Taught again with Ts experiencing classflow as "students." Ended with Ts actively planning to use!
#INeLearn
That is a great strategy. Not only are they experiencing the tool, but when professional learning is thoughtfully designed, they are experiencing the shift in instruction too! #INeLearn

#INeLearn
I know for me at least that was always a key in willingness to use a new tool - what do my students see when they use it? Then I can figure out how to use it in class. #INeLearn
I don't think showing it to someone who is not a part of this discussion is needed. Those here are motivated-they are already through the process and can relate to it. I share it as a visual to help us see the process #INeLearn
R5: If I showed that TAM model to most teachers, they would immediately shut down. Teaching effective integration shouldn’t feel intimidating. #INeLearn
R5: some schools think that we should throw Ts in the deep end and let them sink or swim. We MUST provide the safety net for them to integrate and get comfy. They DONT have to learn it all. Find a tool and get great at it. #INelearn
R5 I don’t have a great response here, but one thing that has helped us recently has been asking the question “How can we get this lesson to move beyond these four walls?” #INeLearn
That was the me reason why are #RCSeMadness Bracket is so successful. Ts get to experience what it feels like to submit an assignment in @CanvasLMS and get feedback within the system. #inelearn
In reply to
@letscreatemoore, @ClassFlow, @CanvasLMS
It's so easy to be overwhelmed by the limitless tools Ts could use and I think sometimes the #1 obstacle. I always urge a T to find 1or 2 they can use and get comfortable, then add to their toolbox. #INeLearn
Yeah, I realize WE are assessed on this. My thought is that IF we engage our Ss with great opportunities and I can sneak that curriculum into the learning opportunities, the reinforcement of these activities will carry over to those THINGS we get a letter on our school #INeLearn
R4: Oh I definitely feel that when I talk about tech integration with our teachers focus is on curriculum goals and how tech can enable a T/S to reach those goals. Our district focus on Hyperdocs with IN standards aligned helped. https://t.co/dguD1Lm533#INeLearn
R5: Build a relationship first so they are comfortable with "Not knowing" in front of you. Then build confidence. Build upon success by showing them how they can, not how you can #INeLearn
I hope you saw my response to Sherry! I shared TAM with those in the chat because you have been through the process-sometimes it's good to see and remember so you don't get frustrated with those still in the early stage #INeLearn
R1 | Teacher perceptions of tech in the classroom vary greatly, and I think it depends on access and frequency of use. You can have one building with varying access, which can unfortunately allow teachers to push the responsibility on to the next year's teachers #INeLearn
I think even to many coaches & integrators that model can feel overwhelming because of the language & word choices. You know me... practical, simple, & down to earth! #INeLearn
R6: Tech integration is a subdomain on our evaluation tool. Our Math DC led her meeting this week modeling how to use GSlides to gather Ss responses to a bellringer prompt, for those Ts struggling to find a way to dip a toe in the water. #inelearn
R4 | Tech integration is a natural support for cross-curricular teaching, and a fantastic way to incorporate those process standards. It can also support collaboration across grade levels. Build those relationships! #INeLearn
R6 I think it's still a box to check on an evaluation form. There's also still some perception that if the T is using tech, the box gets checked. What about the Ss? #INeLearn
R6: it’s on RISE or whatever it is being called. As an eCoach, I’m evaluated on how I incorporate in my classroom and how I help out Ts in my school. #INelearn
R6: #INeLearn Currently district wide tech goals are at basic levels but each year adding elements as devices have increased. Goals for implementing digital lessons have made the transition to digital easier. Reps created a starting point so a lower tech teacher had support.
R2 | Tech has been a life-changing tool for assessment. There are now easy to implement tools to help me assess learning for different students, based on their individual learning style. Education and assessment are not a one size fits all situation. #INeLearn
R6: In our district it varies from admin to admin. Some look at it as a box to check. Some don't understand technology integration themselves. We're still growing and learning...daily. #INeLearn
R6: Required Ts assignments each month. It could effect professionalism points if not done. Eavh T has a different personal success track. If we make it about Ts accountability and a "gotcha" then we forgot the reason for "why" tech is needed. For the students! #INeLearn
R6 It's not in our eval system in so many words. But we all know there's a correlation between effective tech integration & great teaching. However, I do think some ts who are extrinsically motivated would be more likely to buy in if it were plainly stated in eval. #INeLearn
This is a good strategy, but we have to remember that there are times when our learners don't know what they need to know. This doesn't make you a know it all, but we do need to have that bigger picture in mind #INeLearn
I am so eager to explore and experiment with Hyperdocs. I am bringing 25 Ts to the @edtechteam Indiana Summit and have encouraged many to explore these! #INelearn
In reply to
@nadinegilkison, @LCHS_Bio, @edtechteam
R6 | Accountability has to be linked to access, and teacher understanding of effective tech use. The more we develop teachers' skills on developmentally appropriate tech use, the stronger the practice should be. The impact is two-way, for student and teacher. #INeLearn
R6: I love seeing the expectation for technology usage being modeled from the top down by the lead learners. Not expecting teachers to do/try things without learning alongside them is a powerful example in leadership #INeLearn
It gives me a bit of a road map. Sometimes Ts are forced to be there also. I’ve had that happen in the past and feel like I’m wasting their time. How can it be beneficial for all involved. #INeLearn
That is unfortunate. Administrators would never tolerate their teachers doing that to students. It's hard for me to understand such a double standard. #INeLearn
R7: I would like to further discuss evaluation of tech integration. How do we get admin & coaches on the same page? How do we evaluate the work coaches are doing in addition to the work Ts are doing? #INeLearn
R7: Lot of firepower in this room. Side convos were awesome. Tech in service of student learning & curriculum goals could be a whole chat by itself. #inelearn
