Hi, this is Fran from Madrid. Even though this year I'm not teaching, I've taught Music in Secondary Education (mainly 12-14 years old) for 21 years #EduGoalsMooc
Welcome our guest expert @IamDrWill who is an instructional technologist for a K12 school district in Mississippi. He is also the creator and host of The Dr. Will Show https://t.co/yfNrYR1t3C#EduGoalsMOOC
A1: In general, people get most excited about ideas and goals that are THEIR OWN. I think giving students options to *own* the process is the best way to motivate #EduGoalsMOOC

A1: Activities in which students create. @Desshondraw has done a great with her students creating travel brochures and as well as videos to provide evidence of their understanding of biomes. #EduGoalsMOOC
A1: @elle_gifted has also done great with her students in letting go of control and encouraging her students to go productive struggle. See an example of a cardboard challenge #EduGoalsMOOC
A2: They can encourage them to
•keep up working on skills not recognized by grades,
• increase their confidence
• set their goals
• document their achievements #EduGoalsMOOC
A2: "Rich" is the key word here. When we attach evidence and issue Badges for MEANINGFUL achievements, it turns the Badges into storytelling devices that communicate a deeper, richer narrative about learners and their accomplishments #EduGoalsMOOC

A2: I see it being more effective when you gamify your classroom or part of a portfolio. Badges can be great if they lead students to something bigger at the end of completing something or if they are completing against classmates #EduGoalsMOOC

A3: Two suggestions here:
1. Require that evidence be attached to make Badges more meaningful
2. Know the "WHY" so you can communicate to skeptical students who ask, "Why should I care?" #EduGoalsMOOC

No problem Mirian!!! So nice to see you here, amiga! Argentina in the house! Vamos todavía! Seguí el #EduGoalsMooc Fijate las preg Q1, Q2 etc rtas A1 A2 y así hasta la 6!!
I’m so glad you mention a platform that makes the process easier and manageable especially when teachers already have so much on their plate #EduGoalsMooc
Great idea, indeed. I usually create the rubrics with them but I've never thought on giving them the possibility of designing not only the #badge but also the evidences attached to them #EduGoalsMooc
A2: Students respond to game analogies, achievements & competitions (esp. when they compete against themselves). Plus, they love stickers. Doesn’t everyone? #EduGoalsMOOC
Late to #EduGoalsMooc Tweeting from bed, I've been sick with bronchitis all week :( so I'm behind with the badges and the mission, but excited by the thoughts of it. Susan, Spanish teacher in Dublin
With the learning mission, love the idea of students having to prove they've fulfilled the criteria - key in making them accountable for their learning. #EduGoalsMooc
Thanks. I always try to sell technology to teachers with "what's in it for them." I have learned not to start the grandiose ideas about transformation and Netflix generation of learners. If I can save them time, I have their attention. #EduGoalsMooc
A4: Mixing it up is huge. Even the most cool tech grows stale if overused. Variety is good for Ss + Ts alike. Keeping track of what we've done can help as it'll help us bring back "oldies but goodies" that we may otherwise forget to cycle back into rotation #EduGoalsMOOC
A2: am totally new to using badges so this is a new departure for me. Found the video very informative. Planning to use badges first with my Form 1 (Grade 7) probably. It will tie in with a new curriculum we have in Ireland. #EduGoalsMooc#jcreform
A1: I did not use badges for my student, but I will certainly do it in the future. I know what it feels like when I have won a lot of badges at various courses. #EduGoalsMooc
Absolutely, and so many tools add new tricks so that when we come back to them they have new bells and whistles to keep all of us more engaged ;) #EduGoalsMooc

A4: Mix it up. Don’t overuse Kahoot It or Nearpod or other platforms. Develop projects that take weeks to complete, and give students creative license and freedom to express themselves. #EduGoalsMOOC
We´re currently on Q4: What are your top tips for motivating students with technology? Answer A4 but you can answer any of the previous 1-3 any time #edugoalsmooc
A4:Know what colleagues are doing,so that you(& they)don't overuse 1 https://t.co/XAHebEtAaA's great for Ss to see tools across different subjects, but when you see eyes roll at previously-loved Quizlet, take a break.Or tweet to see how other teachers mix it up! #EduGoalsMooc
A5: So many of things I've done, LOL:) My most negative impact is when I fail to consider what's best for ELLs and Ss with special needs when lesson planning. What's good for these learners is good for ALL learners so neglecting accommodations is negative for all #EduGoalsMOOC
A4 Agree! Ss need to see the mission goal, if not it´s like using tech for the sake of it and pedagogy needs to go first! Ss opinions DO have value!! #EduGoalsMooc
A4: Best teacher tip: Keep paper copies of all students’ ID & login codes handy on one clipboard or in one binder or on cards. When a student is a struggling learner who can’t memorize a code, that can be embarrassing for them & a deal breaker. #EduGoalsMooc
A4: when trying a new tool, get the Ss on board by telling them you're learning alongside. Let them teach you what they learn as they go along; value their voice & their response to the new tool/activity. #EduGoalsMooc

A5: Stuff that is focused on testing. Programs that drill and kill students by focusing on their deficits. Remediation is needed, but putting students through tests after tests after tests wears them out. #EduGoalsMOOC

A5: All the opposite of what we have been saying gets them going! Exam season is a testing time (terrible pun, I know but it's true!!) for both Ss & Ts and results/feedback can be demotivating instead of encouraging students forward. #EduGoalsMooc
And this is a huge issue. School leaders demand Teachers focus on "what really matters" and this is great...BUT comes undone when Teachers' eval is weighted on standardized test scores #EduGoalsMooc
Remediation is very important, but the best remediation starts with building a culture of high expectations and hope in the possibilities. When students believe there is a future out there for them, they will put in the work. #EduGoalsMooc
Testing drills provide Ss with some ability to face other exams, but with stress, pression we go nowhere: just frustration and depression #EduGoalsMooc
Thanks! A lesson learned after many years. I’ve toughened up about how kind & respectful we are to each other, but I’ve softened when it comes to forgetfulness or disorganization. I know each child has their own learning curve. #EduGoalsMooc
A6: So many!
- Student surveys at start of year
- Borrowing ideas shared in my PLN
- Here are some bookmarks I've saved as well: https://t.co/eUOmjmZ6fx#EduGoalsMOOC
I want to banish all state testing that requires students to meet a cut score. If you don't care about growth, you don't care about learning. Focusing on a cut score isn't caring about learning #EduGoalsMooc

Yes! I just took out this week one of our projects to go over material I saw they hadn’t achieved and I think the next project will be stronger for it #EduGoalsMooc
Before you go please share your top takeaways from our guest experts @IamDrWill and @SenorG and don't forget to follow them on Twitter and read their blogs! #EduGoalsMOOC
A6: I suggest teachers learn more about families and communities their students come from. Success is a mindset. You can talk about relationships all day, but you have to get your students to believe that they belong to a world outside of their neighborhood #EduGoalsMOOC
It's such an honor to learn with you all! Huge thanks to @IamDrWill and @ShellTerrell for allowing me to share your air! Y'all are amazing gifts to the profession!!!! #EduGoalsMOOC
Q6 on the air now! A6: Talking to Ss, if they feel like doing so! EFL-ESL or foreign language classes are ideal for that discovery! Group discussions, pair work, updated news content are good resources: oral or written way #EduGoalsMooc
A6: Students have to believe that they can play on a larger stage. Once they have that knowledge, nothing is going to stop them from realizing their dreams #EduGoalsMOOC
I know! Money makes the... doesn´t it?. I´ve realized that while teaching in NC for 6 years, Dr Will! I didn´t understand it at first! Cultural difference lesson learned! #EduGoalsMooc
MIl Gracias for everyone's patience with my scheduled tweets the first half of the chat...was giving a talk at a conference. So glad I got to join in live and learn live with you geniuses! #edugoalsmooc
Love this. One of the greatest gifts we can give to colleagues, students and any other human is the encouragement they need to give themselves permission to be audacious #EduGoalsMooc
