I’ll be in an out of chat, too. I’m at my mom’s in Fremont, which made it easy for me to attend yesterday
Ok here we go everyone! Q1 is on the way Watch for
a1: Helping students generate questions and discover student misconceptions.
Darn it... you were at edcampsj ehh?
https://t.co/w76AGaWnlF
I’ll be in an out of chat, too. I’m at my mom’s in Fremont, which made it easy for me to attend yesterday
Q1: What are some characteristics of good design in learning? (lessons and/or spaces)
A1: Lessons where the teacher is not the center...love those guide on the side rather than sage on the stage opportunities!
Craig, I followed tweets from *5* s this weekend! Yay for dedicated educators!
A1: Did someone say spaces!?! My fav topic. Choice and flexibility are important for both.
A1 - good design allows students to explore/find answers, inquire about the world around them, come up with their own questions
A1: Good design in learning engages S's and speaks to their hearts and minds
differentiation to meet student needs and most importantly interests to keep them engaged!
A1: Flexibility, in both space and learning experience
A1 Good design begins with the end in mind, whether lessons or spaces.
A1) Fun, flexibility, portability, modifiable, checks for understanding, relevant.
A1) Good design allows for students to incorporate their interests. It allows for student choice.
A1. Apply current educational concepts to relevant real-life events and communicate it.
So hard for the flexible learning spaces in science classrooms - lab areas are not flexible - but they also allow for hands on
A1: Lessons that allow all students to discuss opinions and learn from each other
the more the students do the better
A1 In lessons we should build in choice and challenge, exploration and drawing on prior knowledge for connection
Need to frame that
https://t.co/NdqQhu95Zr
A1: Good design in learning engages S's and speaks to their hearts and minds
A1: Great lessons can not only expand the brain, but expand the mind, heart and spirit as well.
Those CFUs are so important. They almost become tiresome in T prep programs, but are vital to know direction.
A1 I do really like opps for Ss to engage in 4cs--Ss explore, think, negotiate ideas, create, where the T facilitates the learning
Ha! That's Q2. But elaborate on that. How does it speak to <3 and minds?
So funny - I had an adult tell me that they don't like choice, but they encourage it for their students
A1 Student centered. Goal/objective oriented. There's others for sure. But miss these n you might as well send 'em home
A: 1 in which Ss want it & make it with the T..
A1: engaging, fun, sometimes "tricks" Ss into learning while they're having fun (those are my favorite lessons) 😄
Yeah... we're still working with our space. Making little shits and learning through the process
https://t.co/cM9Ht04Gzy
So hard for the flexible learning spaces in science classrooms - lab areas are not flexible - but they also allow for hands on
Negotiate ideas. I like. Elaborate on that
(literal & metaphorical) is important. They need to be doing the talking & the learning.
Lessons that they don't want to end.
https://t.co/8QxUnQxmZp
A1: engaging, fun, sometimes "tricks" Ss into learning while they're having fun (those are my favorite lessons) 😄
A1: Good design starts & ends with assessment and objectives. It links to standards. It strives to engage learners.
it’s not my doc to edit - sorry - hopefully fixed now? https://t.co/T9fOv6b4rX
Couldn't open the gdoc, David. Can you change the permission settings?
I have not seen this - I guess I need it on my 'to-do' list!
I call them thermometers.
Good learning design allows for inquiry, authentic connection to learner & application/ sharing beyond classroom

Hi - David, Palo Alto HS - I’ll be in and out tonight
I thought there may be a Katie sighting here tonight! Hello!
A1- SPACE - The physical environment should increase the feeling of classroom community, and give students a sense of empowerment.
A1: Where Ss can collaborate/exchange their thoughts, a lesson where Ss can teach each other, a space free of judgement.
Couldn't agree more! I love learning something new everyday from my students
Very true. I call them check-ins, followed by check-ups as needed.
A1 Spaces that make use of the space and promote movement both of the objects and students within.
Love Iron Chef - learned it from the best... and at
thinking about exploration & collaboration part in this--how they will communicate/display learning w/ one another
Little shits? Not very PC. haha!
. S's need emotional connection to class, trchr, subject before they lower their defenses enough to learn
Note to self - 💭
📝Edit tweets before pressing Tweet. 😳1stGr
I do think that SPACE and LEARNING go hand in hand with successful learning
Love that — movement of objects AND students within. And mindsets, too. https://t.co/KVXW8J9Z7i
A1 Spaces that make use of the space and promote movement both of the objects and students within.
https://t.co/0mNF0uEvHM is mobile. It is pushed away, united and shaped according to the needs of the activity and Ss.
Yeah... we're still working with our space. Making little shifts and learning through the process https://t.co/cM9Ht04Gzy
So hard for the flexible learning spaces in science classrooms - lab areas are not flexible - but they also allow for hands on
A1 As for spaces.. Methinks they're less important than who's in there with you. Spaces should encourage movement (kinesthetic)
A1 Good lessons involve my voice.
Ok. Here comes Q2 in a min. Look for
That is awesome Craig - I need to keep that quote for sure :)
I wonder how I can get more of Doug’s voice in my lessons? https://t.co/EoD7ymN782
A1 Good lessons involve my voice.
Well, then I need to borrow your voice....does anyone have the little mermaid octopus?
Q2: How are design and feelings/emotion connected in regards to education?
Yeah not in 1stGr. Too many opportunities for movement means kids "cleaning sponges" during a 7min "lecture".
Furniture is mobile. It is pushed away, united and shaped according to the needs of the activity and Ss.
A2 - we keep saying it...but if you don't connect with kids, the best design/lesson falls on deaf ears
My voice is for sale. I'm an eduguru.
Q2: To rephrase: WHY are feelings and emotions tied to learning design?
A1: great question: If relationships are key to learning, then design needs to take emotion into consideration.
a2: Kids need to feel a connection to their learning..if you give them the power to design the way it looks, they OWN the process!
A2 Design reflects the emotion of the creator and affects emotions of participants. Thoughtful = good, lazy = bad
Melinda joining all the way from Katy, TX
A1: Ownership of the learning. Do Ss have a time and place to learn and masterful Ts Orchestrating the experience?
I couldn't agree more! Without assessment and observation, we are sailing blind.
a3: Flexible learning requires a flexible physical space. I would love to get some modular desks for many diff. configs.
A1 Include the learners ideas in all aspects of both--designing class space and class/indiv. learning direction, options, ideas.
Agreed. Ss also need to feel comfortable w/each other, too. 🤓 EX: Share3➕RE📝
A2 - think about your own learning, if you don't care about someone/something, why would you work with/for them?
A2: Learning is not a solo endeavour, it is collaborative and thus needs emotion to tie together.
A2) Space affects mood and learning. Have students in charge of their space
Littles are special that's for sure
A2 : "see Ss in the way they see themselves" if we don't know our Ss we can't develop learning exper. relevant to them
A2: wow - good question. So many “how” answers. I wish more people were even aware that they’re connected at all.
A2 Depends how well designer/teacher involved their learners in the process. Best way to find out? Ask them. Then fold in a story
This is especially true as we want ss to work together in groups or partnerships. https://t.co/RijiUQN1iS
A2 - think about your own learning, if you don't care about someone/something, why would you work with/for them?
A2: If Ss don't see you interested/excited about the lesson you get the same reactions back. Ts have to model what they expect
Sad that this statement is true right?
A2 (waving from WA) it's hard to learn if all your needs (incl. emotions) aren't met https://t.co/jfE8aQnHU5
Q2: How are design and feelings/emotion connected in regards to education?
A2: When you create an environment where people can be open to new knowledge, ideas, perspectives- endless possibilities
A2 in addition, when a T is passionate about what they're teaching the passion becomes contagious and learning spreads!
Good answer good answer!
https://t.co/EQmsaUpA10
A2 Design reflects the emotion of the creator and affects emotions of participants. Thoughtful = good, lazy = bad
Well said! I couldn't agree more.
A2: As designers, we must have empathy for the audience that we are designing for. Seeing other POVs!
A2 Most surprising lesson I learned about design thinking is the importance of the role of empathy
Exactly. Hopefully most teachers see that emotion and learning are intertwined.
Some of my fav. science--outside the classroom
A2: The central tenet of is that we are teaching feeling humans. Emotions power engagement, create focus
Education is a human endeavor, and emotion cannot be decoupled from that. Design with humans in mind first.
I love this answer so much. Thanks!
A2: I wish I had more control over pays. design. As p/t teacher (0.6) I float in/out other Ts’ classrooms.
This is really powerful as well when we consider the PD we offer teachers (as well as admin!) https://t.co/z2hu7OfduI
A2: As designers, we must have empathy for the audience that we are designing for. Seeing other POVs!
A2: Sometimes we let our feeling towards our "favorite" lesson get in the way of doing something more instructionally sound
Have an answer ready for Q6
Agreed! independent Learning time HAS to be conducive to Independent Learning. Can't blame Ss.
I hadn't thought of the adult pro-d connection. Great point, Todd.
OK! Here comes Q3. Watch for
A2: corrected: wish I had more control over physical design for my classes. As p/t teacher (0.6) I go in/out of other Ts’ rooms
A2: when I'm excited or enjoying something I'm engaged, it's the same no matter what age you are
That's aa great point. Stop reflecting and updating when you've got a favorite.
A2) (Hashtag assist)
https://t.co/MFRx2QLKHO
Education is a human endeavor, and emotion cannot be decoupled from that. Design with humans in mind first.
A2 They're not zombies. Avoid the apocalypse by engaging their interest.
Q3: How can the design of a learning space affect the ability for students to learn?
When Ss have choice good things happen
A2: 1/2 Such a crime that empathy, conflict resolution, teamwork, grit, real problem solving is not measured on the SBAC...
A3. First of all move them out of rows. Allow for movable classroom seating. Wheels.
Agreed. Which involves finding out what they are interested in = empathy
. yes - and design of learning spaces and experiences can influence Ss’ emotions.
A3: Design of the learning space is just as important as the design of the learning. It needs to be safe and collaborate.
I had gotten ALL the Ss the same desks:⬇️disruptive behavior + max learning space. (and make it pretty.)
A3: If we know ss integration & relationships are impt, desks in rows facing the front won’t encourage that.
A2 Reminds me of Mihalyi Ctsenmi(?)’s concept of FLOW, where we feel immersed in the present when fully engaged, incl emotionally
I have always wondered if the learning space means more in elem as it does in secondary?
A3 If the space feels sterile or friendly or chaotic students feel that. Make it creative and as open as possible.
A3: When the desks only face the front> S's are only supposed to learn from the person on the stage, usually the Tchr. !
A2: 2/2 Because emotion is not measured many systems fail to address this important need. SBAC < API < real learning.
A: Ss need to feel comfortable & respected, engaged in a positive vibe, w a creation of an energy that flows a learning network
I used to decorate my HS classroom with themed walls - but I'm not sure if kids liked it or even really noticed
I'd say they mean different. At secondary, the 'rows and columns' are being replaced with exploratory spaces.
I've got a lot of no seats
Thanks for the encouragement, ObiJon! https://t.co/Im7Zdb9urJ
Don't be modest for aggressively listening and acting - you took action!
That’s great when Ss can move out of the classroom.
Yes! Castors make all the difference. I want my room to be like a theatrical set--ready for scene changes at any time.
A3 it's the little things that can get in the way, Ss things to see, room to move and learn together https://t.co/ztyrLdYwab
Q3: How can the design of a learning space affect the ability for students to learn?
That is very true - I guess I forget that people still do row seating :(
A3 an open environment allows Ss room to design and collaborate
A3 Depends. At a minimum the space should have resources needed to ________.
A3 different persp.--recently was @ a high school where campuspolice stood @ hallways during passing period. How's that 4 trust
A3: I do think that there is a time&place for everything that happens in the classroom. Config flexibility is key for me
. I read somewhere that after 1 week or so anything you put on your walls becomes wallpaper to S's
A3: designing a space for students to interact more with each other will encourage collaboration and will feel more comfortable
I think about doing that but never do.
I could not agree more with this. Nor can it measure community involvement & volunteering.
A3: Kids with learning disabilities or behavior problems benefit from unique design. Keeps them interested and on task.
Let's ask that Q then: What is you have no $ to revamp a room? What CAN you do?
A3: Design directly affects
Scientifically proven. There is an indepth Edu📰out there somewhere.
A3) Flexibility in the space allowing for varied activities. Students have ownership of the space.
A3: Learning occurs within architectural space, not just mentally. When space is flexible, it engenders
A3 when schools look like prisons w/ high fences, closed hall doors & campus police staked out--it makes me even want to escape!
A3:Ownership and collaboration. Does the space reflect our views about the learners If we want discourse does the space allow it?
Oriental Trading Co and were best buds back then :)
a4: One place for creation could be at the assessment phase. Or DI and add creation this point. Create shared understanding.
A3) Remember to use outdoor spaces too.
Yes in Csikszentmihalyi's concept of Flow, challenges match skills. Optimal learning state for Ss. https://t.co/pGJifV8UZQ
A2- It's important to build a community of learners that want to learn rather than 'have' to learn.
A3: The design has to keep in mind the needs of all Ss and meet them to the best of its ability.
My fav answer so far - outdoor learning!
Nothing that's nailed down needs to stay where it is. It's fun to have kids push desks around
OK: Here comes Q4. REDESIGN the lesson with the correct focus! Watch
Who needs a room? 1972 Mr Keith at Colton High had us Lear Pythagorean Theorem measure flag poles and river fords..
Worked on developing outdoor spaces this year. Ss use them all the time. Great investment of time and $$.
Yes, the authentic list of skills employers will reward handsomely is not even remotely close to the SBAC https://t.co/fObtEwjqsJ
I could not agree more with this. Nor can it measure community involvement & volunteering.
A3: it's the mood you create in your room, saw present in boring conf room but was engaged entire time
A3 As stated in the intro the questions in the doc, the key is Accessibility (in lessons and spaces). So moving furniture is good
A3 Even with learning spaces, allow for choice. Some love groups--others need a quiet ind. space. Water cooler, healthy snacks+
How do we improve on those favorite lessons
I would take Ss outdoors to learn about projectiles and other physics topics
do you have photos? Would love to see!
allowing for change from period to period and Ss to Ss is essential!
And is there ever a time to retire that lesson
. Yes! A lot of creativity can happen outside! I send S's outside all the time--to work on films and other projects.
No money? Add light, add , add more art, rearrange furniture, go outside, move teacher's desk
Maybe try looking at what you have with one eye open? What might McGyver do if he were in your classroom?
A3) Classrooms should be enticing enough to empower S's. Involve them in the process of redesign. See the difference it makes!
A4 Introduction-> State goal -> say Make a Thing -> Move out of way to guidance position ready to step in
A4 Relevant problem -> empathy -> tools -> brainstorm -> share solution -> rinse/repeat
Howdy, Kimberly Knight from Beaumont USD
A4: Give Ss authentic problem to solve.
A4: Ss observe sci event, figure out ? they need to measure and how to make it larger/better/faster. Then do it themselves.
Hi Kim! Thanks for joining us tonight!
Go to the local carpet store + buy squares (for Ss to sit on + learn space + SEL +
. Nice, Melanie! S's can learn a lot from the redwoods!
thanks, appreciate the photo
A4 Absolutely, they are the future and the future has needs! https://t.co/UbkAYCssQN
A4: Ss observe sci event, figure out ? they need to measure and how to make it larger/better/faster. Then do it themselves.
A4 (roughly): provocative question > exploration > analysis > new question > draft/prototype > analysis > revise > publish
A4: Content creation implies critical thinking. Stu asks: what is the essence of my inquiry? Then shares learning.
It's so hard to measure emotions in our testing env
A4: Put out exs of simple machines>see how they work>build rube goldberg mach> assessment is if it completes task
A4 the /backwards design way - Students/Classroom Profile-> Goals -> Assessment methods -> activities and flex methods
Brill! https://t.co/lgNHvtK2tN
A4 (roughly): provocative question > exploration > analysis > new question > draft/prototype > analysis > revise > publish
A4--immediate thoughts: explore (research read, teach), share, connect, prototype, test, play, share--all driven by essential ?s
Controlled chaos is good when designing
More scholarly syllables than my answer, but I agree! https://t.co/jhW4vP5w02
A4 (roughly): provocative question > exploration > analysis > new question > draft/prototype > analysis > revise > publish
A4: What we’re seeing is ss involvement jumping to the forefront - get them engaged ASAP.
Great answer! https://t.co/8aj71atMXw
A4 (roughly): provocative question > exploration > analysis > new question > draft/prototype > analysis > revise > publish
Nice, sounds like about 16% of Ss are covered. My 3000 Ss share 40 Chromebooks - about 1% coverage. https://t.co/8d0tStl563
Absolutely, if you can imagine we share 30 Chromebooks for 177 students in our rural K-8 school!
Perfectly embraces what should take place in the classroom! Love this! https://t.co/9DnBgPVVPY
A4 (roughly): provocative question > exploration > analysis > new question > draft/prototype > analysis > revise > publish
A4: paraphrasing Shakespeare, if to know were to do then were all [great teachers]. Meaning: I talk a better game than I teach.
This right here! Lots of time to collaborate, question, get feedback, change direction, explore! Love it! https://t.co/461ht3FdLS
A4 (roughly): provocative question > exploration > analysis > new question > draft/prototype > analysis > revise > publish
Thank you! And you're very right, teacher is in control of the mood
Yes, if you do have S's move desks, teach them the pinwheel design
A4: next year taking on 2 sections of English that are more PBL. It’s that inspires me. I’ll be coming to this PLN for help too!
That's how my room feels. It also feels like learning.
Sorry guys- I blipped out to fix the strawberries and angel food cake for my Sunday dinner
If you talk it, you’re at least thinking it. Wish more colleagues did so we could support each other https://t.co/NKdVkF7cMO
A4: paraphrasing Shakespeare, if to know were to do then were all [great teachers]. Meaning: I talk a better game than I teach.
A4) Activity -> Redesign Activity -> Conduct -> Repeat
Students leading process.
Share? *perk* https://t.co/0q6IfmeKwm
Sorry guys- I blipped out to fix the strawberries and angel food cake for my Sunday dinner
Leila here from Escondido jumping in late
A4 A rriddle.. Two transportation methods, Route 66 & rail.. Why would one go straight and the other not? https://t.co/B6IJca89ej
in a way, talking is what pushes me to improve. I could lay low and carry on, but talk the talk --> walk the walk
A4) T's or S's Introduce a problem, S’s inquire & solve problem using varying methods and present in varying ways. T's facilitate
a5: The brief activity could be collaborative. Group students to dig deeper into topic.
A5 Caution: I provide alternatives to constant collab after Susan Cain’s TEDtalk on Introverts. Some work best alone occasionally
Wish I had enough to share with everyone here. They are delish! My mom and dear daughter ate it up!
A5) Stop, collaborate, and listennnnnnn
Students are back with a brand new edition.
A5 Create modular learning spaces Ss and Ts can move on the fly to circle up the wagons.
When Ss are designing it doesn't matter where they sit
Ditto - saying it out loud/ on paper makes me accountable! https://t.co/WeuYZQ0F1y
in a way, talking is what pushes me to improve. I could lay low and carry on, but talk the talk --> walk the walk
A4 I get that student success is grounded in objectives but asking a question should not elicit the same response 32 times..
A5- Q or inquiry at the center & opportunities/access to connect/collaborate with people in class, experts, community, networks
Here comes Q6 from . It's on PD :)
These days- I allow projects to be choice of team or solo.
A5 Gameification oozes collaboration. We learn more abt each othr in 5 min of play than 10hrs of work
A5: Introduce task that requires multiple abilities - all students have some of these abilities/skills, but no 1 student has all
Q6: How would you redesign “sit&get”, “1&done” professional development for teachers?
I like that! Give them the freedom to work on their own if they choose to do so
A5: EX Math: I had Math Wksps w/Ss grouped by varying ability levels + manipulatives at each table.
Worked WELL.
My district is rolling out new LMS so they designed self-paced online tutorial for T's to learn the basics.
A6: Open up the time for Ts to learn and grown in ways they need. Provide time to share & learn from each other.
A5: Entry event > Inquiry > Assess > Team setup > Refine question > Research > Collaborate > Shared doc > Present
A5 T&S generated essential ?s with both exploring, prototyping, sharing/publishing with experts from the community involved
A6: Bring "Genius Hour" to Ts...give them choice, support, resources, & time...no more weekly staff mtngs...make them PD instead!
I like this so much. Brilliant idea! https://t.co/xRzfdtRe52
A6: Bring "Genius Hour" to Ts...give them choice, support, resources, & time...no more weekly staff mtngs...make them PD instead!
A6: Embed PD in practice. At least follow-up sit & get PD with evidence and coaching.
Hi, ! Check out our educators’ — that’s what I was responding to. https://t.co/AuQMC5tGaW
A5 Caution: I provide alternatives to constant collab after Susan Cain’s TEDtalk on Introverts. Some work best alone occasionally
or help them discover an authentic problem to solve?
A6 A lot of what we talked about at tonight - make choices an T leaders the key! https://t.co/C5qzYPuBOK
Q6: How would you redesign “sit&get”, “1&done” professional development for teachers?
A5: As we think about redesigning lessons, instructional spaces etc. We should also think about developing cultural proficiency
a6: The Edtechteam GAFE events also provide a lot of time to dig deeper.
a6: I love the Edcamp model. Except I come with a question rather than an answer. Seek answer from the room.
Love the idea of learning from each other https://t.co/E1QnXZHkY1
A6: Open up the time for Ts to learn and grown in ways they need. Provide time to share & learn from each other.
A6: Not too sure what these are? More clarification please?
https://t.co/3OIjgzaETG
Q6: How would you redesign “sit&get”, “1&done” professional development for teachers?
A6) Incorporate the unconference model in PD. Put in place instructional rounds with team based professional growth plans in place
OMG from your lips to Admin ears! Please! In my lifetime! https://t.co/2f37dmWc3Y
A6: Bring "Genius Hour" to Ts...give them choice, support, resources, & time...no more weekly staff mtngs...make them PD instead!
A6: currently experimenting with using snapchat for PD, narration and authentic viewing and sharing of ideas/implementation
A6. Allow for Ts to make choices on topics that focus on their learning needs.
A5: Clarification:
1️⃣Engage
2️⃣DI
3️⃣🅰MATH Wksp w/group work
=(brief activity)
3️⃣🅱Hmwk = IndependentWork
4️⃣Assess
How to we change typical 30min afterschool PD for teachers sitting in a room, trained on a tech tool?
A6: Have Ts create something based on shared resource then present to/share with each other.
A6: Develop a culture of learning. Ask and communicate the WHY. Show Ts and support Ts. Let Ts chose the path to the why
totally agree, so much is learned from the conversations that happen
For Ts who are a little hesitant to be on their own, have teacher leaders lead cohorts of best practices! https://t.co/bnfVPKymIy
OMG from your lips to Admin ears! Please! In my lifetime! https://t.co/2f37dmWc3Y
A6: Bring "Genius Hour" to Ts...give them choice, support, resources, & time...no more weekly staff mtngs...make them PD instead!
A6: Keep professional learning sustained over time. No PD should be isolated. Use tools like for for PLNs
A6a Facilitator shares their WE (Worst Ever) PD experience then ask others to share theirs. Everyone can dig up a something bad..
A6 make PD active--define pedagogy to occur in classrooms w/ Ts & model PD same way--give them time to collaborate and see models
Over and over Ts say they want to hear from each other. We’ve got to give time for that.
So true. Keep that PD going and going and going https://t.co/vT8Y5Tl84y
A6: Keep professional learning sustained over time. No PD should be isolated. Use tools like for for PLNs
Yes. I'd like to see Ss find their own problems to solve. . This doesn't come easily to all Ss.
ooh! Why not give them opp to learn a pedagogy or tool, with the promise to deliver a PD sometime later in yr?
🙋🏻iDo PD. I can differentiate like I teach Ss.
hard for me to get over a certain anti-Snapchat bias - doesn’t have adult/professional associations for me.
OK! Here comes Q7 from Another redesign!
A6b After the tissues have all been blown into ask teachers to find someone in the room they can help make it better. Then do so..
I wonder why not just share it within Google Classroom https://t.co/ENCbl7vcwf
hard for me to get over a certain anti-Snapchat bias - doesn’t have adult/professional associations for me.
A5
Explore topic
Research at least 3 sources to verify info.
Share learning--Ss choice 4 audience, style
+reflection ind.+group
