Join in the #HISDAdminChat conversation each Sunday night at 6pm CST as we discuss the challenges we face and the successes we celebrate while learning and leading as an HISD Administrator.
Kristina Woody. Dean of students at Tanglewood Middle School. My highlight was taking my son to Sesame Street Live today. He loved it ❤️ #HISDAdminChat

Hi it’s Kristy from @CodwellES. I’ve missed you guys!!! My week consisted of Principal meeting, HAASBE TOY and hanging out with the @HISDSupe. #HISDAdminChat
To the Palace of Versailles and through the human respiratory system. We were going to do one and then they wanted to experience the second one! I love that part of our meetings focus on our own learning! #HISDAdminChat
Q1: Students are more than test scores. At my school, I’m proud we are improving _______________________ regardless of any state test or scores.

A1. I love this question. I am proud we are improving the opportunities and choices that we give our students daily, whether that is academic ownership or extra curricular activities. #HISDAdminChat
A1. As an elementary school principal, we began to move towards focusing on SEL and incorporating restorative circles on campus with students. This approach allows you to get to know the students and families you work with, on a deeper level. #HISDAdminChat

Have been thinking about this a lot too! There’s so much more to being a good reader than STAAR scores! I love what @malene_golding posted recently about independent reading and choice, too. #HISDAdminChat

A1 I am proud we are working on seeing every student and what they walk into us with, their story. Our work with Brene Brown in August has been a focal point. #HISDAdminChat

A2-I think we would still focus on students showing growth from the being of the year to the end. The lack of a test might make it more individualized for every student. #HISDAdminChat
A2: Meaningful assessment should always be a part of the process, even if the 'big scary monsters' were to disappear. I wonder how students would answer this question? #HISDAdminChat
A2: It would be one big science fair or research project. Dialogue about what if and taking time to test it out to see if my hypothesis was proven or not. #funtimes#HISDAdminChat
A2: I think teachers would feel a sense of relief to teach more of the things they really feel mattered, especially in the IB curriculum. I think we would see more risks taken to really go outside of the box. #HISDAdminChat
A2. I believe that some level of assessment is important, but I do think that more innovation, creativity, outside of the box thinking, freedom, and fun would take place if the stress of testing was not so evident in schools. #HISDAdminChat
And just like I loved the 100th day of school celebration, we are about to celebrate the 100th episode of #HISDAdminChat ! And @texasbuckeye and I are EXCITED!
Can you believe?
Wanna join the celebration?
A2: Hard for me to answer because assessment is so important for planning and learning, but I do think that without SO many tests, Ts might have more time to dig deep, do that book study, try a new hands-on lesson, make time for that project, etc... #HISDAdminChat

A2-Regardless of a test or not we show work in instilling a love of learning. Students will graduate from school, but they will never leave learning. Let them see if at a gift rather than a chore. #HISDAdminChat

A2: i believe Education is trying to evolve into a new norm of problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration but our assessments are still left behind on the 20th century. #HISDAdminChat

Q3: How are you reaching your students at different levels to make sure they feel safe, accepted and cared for regardless of their academic performance? #HISDAdminChat

I can tell you they are OVER the tests! It would be interesting to see what suggestions they might have to monitor their progress! A2. It would be more anecdotal and narrative. Less numbers and checking boxes. It needs time and focus. #HISDAdminChat

A3: in the words of my area superintendent @hisdnorth , take the time to celebrate. We have to praise progress. Set attainable goals for all learners and celebrate when they move the needle. #thatshowyoueatanelephant#HISDAdminChat
A3. I few ideas I have ran across... class meetings, individual "data" conferences, providing a confidential way for students to communicate with you, an open door system that allows students to communicate with the counselor/principal, student led lessons, etc. #HISDAdminChat
Q3: How are you reaching your students at different levels to make sure they feel safe, accepted and cared for regardless of their academic performance? #HISDAdminChat
A3. I think it goes back to opportunity. Giving kids the chance to shine in art, music, sports, debate, communication, kindness and leadership. Getting to know all of them, not just the academic part of them.. and celebrating that! #HISDAdminChat
A3: Trying to teach growth mindset & recognize EFFORT, not just performance. Some of our 3rd grd Ts had a pizza party for kids who met their own goal (that the S set) on their snapshot—I loved this. We want kids to see that it’s a process & we believe in them! #HISDAdminChat

A3: one challenge at ES is to ensure kids are connecting with other kids, as well as with the adults on campus. Relationships, relationships, relationships. #HISDAdminChat

A3. That is a big question and I would hope that everything we do, value and engage in makes sts feel safe and accepted. That focus has to be before anything else for learning to happen. #HISDAdminChat

Dan, I think it's important throughout school. The connection piece is huge to a kid transitioning into 9th grade successfully! #GreatPoint#HisdAdminChat
