Antoinne Ferrell @ Whitworth-Buchanan Middle 6th-8th grade Physical Ed. Internal motivation which always pushes me to want more, or to do better than my last time. #RCSTechChat
A1-Celebrating successes is vital to engaging students in the classroom. @MonLaRae & I have done several incentives with iReady & Lexia which included principal shout-outs & a Luau party. Inquiry & PBL activities also allow for active learning & engagement. #rcstechchat
I’m here late, never done this so not sure I’m doing this right 6th grade ELA at Eagleville and learning new things motivates me(and chocolate)#rcstechchat
A1 I think if you build relationships w/ Ss and grow a positive community in your classroom, the success, curiosity, and originality will naturally follow. #rcstechchat
A1 #rcstechchat My students are all special needs so I have to do a lot of hands on activities. We do daily journals where they have to draw the weather. I accept anything and everything they draw.
A1 #rcstechchat students also are given time to use their creativity in the play center. Everything I have is a life skill and they work together as teams when they "play"
A1
Originality: I allow students to decorate their classroom notebooks w/ magazine clippings that represent them so they'll LIKE them when they come in each day to get it. I believe that makes a difference. We contact paper them afterward.
#rcstechchat
A1 #rcstechchat capture and inspire kids to think outside the box with HOT questions! Engagement through technology lets students work at their own pace which leads them to success
A1. Begin with a focused finishing goal with explicit criteria results. Having no finish line is exhausting yourself for no reason. As ss are working toward that specific end result(s), talk to them, ask ?, listen to their journey & guide only when needed #rcstechchat
I always made a point to talk TO them. Not AT them. You have to get to know their interests - pop culture - and not be afraid to look like an idiot. #rcstechchat
A1: First you gotta love your subject area and know those standards DEEP. Add a healthy dose of creativity and inspiring lessons/units should follow naturally. #rcstechchat
A1-Make them wonder, think, discuss, question. Build a classroom community and take the time to get to know your students. Surprise them, shock them, wow them...they deserve it! #rcstechchat
Since I don't have a traditional "class" (I have all 750!) I have to make a point of learning their names asap. This helps me to build a relationship with them from there. #RCSTechChat
A1, A teacher should provide opportunities for all of their students to succeed in the classroom. Brief & small classroom celebrations and recognition should be incorporated into the learning. This builds student to student, and student to teacher relationships. #rcstechchat
Hi, Andrea Morris. Joining late. Social studies (Dual US History) teacher at LaVergne High. I am motivated by giving students an opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school to save time and expense later. #rcstechchat
I try to cultivate these by showing students that I care about them individually and their interests to help build that relationship. I try to develop lessons to have the students want to build on their own curiosity without me just giving them the answer. #rcstechchat

You have to get to know them and be interesting in them. I even try to learn some of their language. Which is hard...I am learning how to say hello in 9 different languages.
They know I care enough to try though.
#rcstechchat
A2-If students are engaged they are actively involved in the learning process. They are working collaboratively on authentic/meaningful learning activities. This may sometimes look chaotic but the students know what to do & they are motivated & challenged. #rcstechchat
A2 #rcstechchat student engagement is where ALL students are involved in the activity in some way. In my classroom some are non verbal so there participation is using their hands to point to their card that they want to "talk" with
A2. Student engagement means that all students are buying into your lesson and are able to discuss and teach the topic to other students in the class. #rcstechchat
A2 - student engagement is when they are all participating . This year I am trying Socratic seminar to give everyone a voice. Also through technology like kahoot or quizziz all students are engaged and have a voice . #rcstechchat
A1: The first item is relationships. I hope to develop a relationship where challenges are accepted as we try to move from high school to college level work. I try to develop questions to lead to further questioning and inquiry. Connect to modern when possible. #rcstechchat
A1 #rcstechchat Getting to know students, building community through activities that are built to feel comfortable and valued. Talking, discussion, and sharing your own struggles with content as Ss are working through.
A2
#rcstechchat
Manipulatives, students talking about their learning and their goals for Intervention, students retelling a story using little McDonald's Happy Meal Toys, Gallery Walks about an opinion piece, "I Have, Who Has Game"
A2-
student engagement doesn't look like a normal class with kids sitting in rows at desks. Kids who are talking to each other and discussing topics and are involved in their learning.
#rcstechchat
A2. Maybe you’ve set the learning target, but very quickly they can talk to you about it in their own words-not standards lingo. True engagement is deep understanding of what they have been working toward. Plus- talking TO them and letting them guide you helps! #rcstechchat
A2. I am in the gym, so I like for my students to lead the activities, peer teach and also "coach" and motivate their peers towards daily success.
#rcstechchat

A2 #rcstechchat students that are engaged are interacting, whether that is with peers, in a small group, with their own individual learning on their own. They are invested in the process. That’s engagement.
A3-Hands on, collaborative activities that include their interests. Use things that they enjoy in your lesson. Ex. Student created memes to demonstrate understanding after a lesson. They loved it & I knew if they understood the content. #winwin#rcstechchat
A3 #rcstechchat I find that starting out with some kind of activity that gets them moving. I fine some type of song that goes along with the subject we are talking about and that gets them excited. GoNoodle is a great tool for this
A3. For me, just talking with them is vital. I love to have "lunch bunches" with kiddos and see them interact with each other and engage with me, too. #RCSTechChat
A3. Being able to use their interests to motivate them. For instance my students are very active and enjoy competition. We will do math review by splitting in teams and playing basket. Everyone loves it and is very engaged in the review. #rcstechchat
A3. The majority of the students will simply tell you the activities that they enjoy. But for those shy students who don't participate much I ask them what activities would they be interested in playing and what can I do to make these activities appeal to them. #rcstechchat
A2 I really enjoy history labs, but seriously need to sit and plan more. We did a disease spreading simulation. I also like to try different ideas like these "steps" to the Am. Rev. sneaker designs. Always looking to improve here. #rcstechchat
#RCSTechChat A3 teacher student discussion. Collage of their interest and let them decorate their folders are all ways I learn their interest. Every Monday we have a rap session in which they share what they did over the Weekend.
A3 #rcstechchat definitely think just talking. They need to know and believe you care to share. One thing I used today was wordle on @Mentimeter after reading and it’s insightful to see what they pick out as sticking with them and you know if they got the concept too. Win win!
A4-Technology is a great way to allow students to express themselves. Giving options that allow them to be creative such as video, infographics, etc. can allow them to demonstrate mastery in non-traditional ways. @Flipgrid & @Seesaw are great tools to use! #rcstechchat
A4 #rcstechchat we make up lots of songs to go along with our lesson. The students are very much a part of making up the lyrics... helps them to remember things
A3- I try to be culturally relevant and use survey questions to start the year. I also speak to add many students as possible at lunch and discuss what they are watching, playing, listening to, etc. #rcstechchat
A3- I do a survey to find what types of animals, cartoon characters, and favorite things.
Right now we are studying animals, and we are all about sharks because it is one of my students favorite animals. Why not use what he likes to reach him.
A4 I want students to be able to utilize some sort of video/interactive tech to created their own physical ed activity or fitness routine. I would like for that activity to be posted on social media to display their creativity. #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat
A4
I do Guided Highlighting for the kids when we read long pieces of text. I give them a code for what to highlight...I would love for them to come up with their own codes to show me they understand the concept.
A4 - Through technology with more choice like a menu . With the help of a fellow teacher I have started using playlist. They can pick their options , but want a way where they come up with activity #RCSTechChat
A4. I want students to feel comfortable and have choices on what they are doing so giving choice boards helps them express how they like to learn. #rcstechchat
A4: I am loving Flipgrid's possibilities for student self-expression. I'm still exploring upcoming units and the best way to incorporate. I love discussion and debate. History is all about creating, defending and assessing arguments. #rcstechchat
A5-Find out what that student is interested in. Give them an important responsibility during the lesson. Show them you care & are genuinely interested in their success. Celebrate successes often. #rcstechchat
A5 #rcstechchat first and foremost, what do you know about that student. If it’s not much, start there. If they are not engaged something else is going on. Person first. They won’t care until they know you care.
A5 Get to know the student on a personal note. Talk to them when their peers aren't around and find out there interest. Try to incorporate that students interest into your next lesson.
#rcstechchat
A5 - I would advise the teacher to have a discussion with the student to see what interest them and then try to do activities that have the connection. Every kid likes something #RCSTechChat
Q5: Gotta look at the whole child. But learning is a continuum beyond August-May. Some of our students are dealing with a lot. Healing and coping takes time. But NEVER give up on them. #rcstechchat
A5- Keep trying until you find something that works. Sometimes it can be as simple as a sticker, a few minutes of free time, or a small treat. Sometimes you just have to keep trying to figure it out. It's not always an easy answer. #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat
A5
Look up their birthday and make the BIGGEST deal about it. Talk to their friends to see what they like and where they hang out to get a feel for what they like. Talk to them for at least 2 minutes each day and see what you find out.
Lots of our kiddos love to visit other teachers, especially from the previous year. This is a no cost way to encourage their participation and acknowledge their efforts. #RCSTechChat
A5- It takes a conversation. Doesn't even have to be about motivation at first. Work up to the "real" talk. Reach out home with a celebration for that student. Connect content to interests. Get involved- show up if they are involved in other stuff to show caring #rcstechchat
We had a kid today crying in Guidance because today was his birthday and he thought no one cared. So sad. When I saw him, I tried to make him feel loved and told him happy birthday!
#rcstechchat
A6-There are so many great tech tools to use with students! I like the ones where students have to use their creativity such as @Seesaw@sway@canva@Storybird@Flipgrid@AdobeSpark Have them write stories, share research, create graphics, respond through video, etc. #rcstechchat
A6: I try to use social media to my advantage. Classroom celebrations and positive celebrations are a must. I also think listening to your students is a positive first step- they have awesome ideas that can be tailored for content. #rcstechchat
A6 Seesaw video and flip grid are two of my favorite. Kids love recording themselves ;however, some like to do it privately. They love flip grid because they can decorate their face with hats and sunglasses #RCSTechChat
