Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
Good Morning #satchat glad to be here with you! I am with #CSforALL and have been a teacher, professor, researcher, and advocate in #CSEd since 1997 Excited to talk about CSED
I love #cs4all but do not think AP test should be the best route nor measure of success. I believe dual enrollment a better more equitable approach #satchat (https://t.co/QcvdJGd1w4)

Hey, everyone! Keisha, Instructional Coach in Iowa, here! I don’t know a lot about today’s topic so I’m jumping on to learn from all of you! Computer science is imperative to preparing students for the future! So excited! #satchat
Morning! I'm Pam, and Instructional Coach in Charleston, SC. I got to do 2 PD sessions for T's on Twitter yesterday and mentioned #satchat in both. "Yes, I set an alarm for a Twitter chat on Saturdays." Who knows which ones think I'm crazy. Lol!
The relationship also calls into question the bias around #cs4all. A test maker funds a program, which success of said program is then measured by the increased number of people taking said test makers test.

"Computer & information research scientists invent & design new approaches to computing technology and find innovative uses for existing technology. They study & solve complex problems in computing." (BLS) This will appeal to your brightest students #CSforAll ? #gtchat#satchat
G'mornin', #satchat!
Having a ridiculously productive AM already - laundry, lesson planning, some negotiations work.
Bring on more coffee!
I'm Karl - 3rd-6th gr basic skills ELA teacher. Today's topic is nowhere near my wheelhouse. Looking forward to being challenged today!

Q1: What is the big idea behind #CSforALL? #satchat
A1: #CSforAll gives all students the opportunity to learn a set of skills transferable to any career. The most important of these skills is computational thinking. #SatChat
Good morning everyone. Just me lurking and learning, and thinking about those massive boxes of cards the computer science majors used to carry around campus! #satchat

A1: Computer science for all is all about exposing students to learning, thinking, and processing skills that they can use now and in the future. #satchat
A1 #satchat I think about how #CSforALL is about creating pathways for all students to have experiences with coding. I think about equity and opportunities to ignite critical thinking through coding..

100% going full steam ahead though in trying to figure out what it takes for every k-6 student to get #cs4all experience and a secondary certification. At @scsu right now we can design a 6th year classroom specialist degree around #CompSci#satchat (https://t.co/zQ2o9Zbakg)
A1: One big idea: Built-in hardware/software accessibility widens audience participation. Check out https://t.co/GPQWlipmhb and @PBSKIDS that invites inclusion of Ss with varied abilities in the game Cyberchase Railway Hero https://t.co/vifIQmWujj#satchat
A1: being a math teacher, #csforall is imperative to the idea of logic and reasoning! If students are able to break down concepts and understand the working parts of math, they are really successful. #CSforAll is a huge help! #satchat
I’m reflecting on how Computer Science is like learning a different language. I would imagine it creates problem solving skills and critical thinking #SatChat
A1: Engaging learners in computational thinking individually and collaboratively to develop work ready skills such as but not limited to: prob solving, critical thinking, teamwork, coding, & so much more #Satchat
A1. This prepare students for anything they want to do in their future as students develop skills that can be used in different platforms and varied ways. #satchat
A1: the big idea in CSforALL is the ALL. It’s the idea that every student should have access to a rigorous, joyful CS education regardless of what they end up doing with those skills #satchat
A1 #satchat#CSforALL All students benefit from deep thinking and problem solving when they are given invitations to solve a problem. Authentic collaboration and problem solving occurs alongside all when given choice.

A1: #CSforALL allows students + teachers, no matter their zip code, to explore skills and mindsets encourage critical thinking thus eliminating barriers that computer science is beyond reach or not applicable to all. #satchat
A1: In short order, CS will be the paper and pen(cil). To not prepare our Ss and give them equal access will only arrest our nation's development. #satchat
A1: If, like the experts say, CS is “powering many approaches to the world’s toughest challenges,” then CS should be an integral part of schooling for all #satchat

A1. The big idea is for students to have a skill set that will take through the 21st century. We are embarking on the 4th Industrial Revolution which includes the need for students to understand #CS4All. #satchat
A2: This is not about one class in every school, but one literacy for every child. Every kid learns about cells because we are made of them. Every child should learn about CS because it will be a huge part of their lives #csforall#satchat
A1: The big idea behind #CSforALL is empowerment. Give ALL kids agency to become creatively, ethically and civically engaged in an era of ubiquitous technology. #satchat
A1: I think #csforall is about designing learning experiences with the principles of #UDL- letting students/educators choose the tools (tech and non-tech) that work for them! #satchat

Let's talk about computer science for all. First question is up!
Q1: What is the big idea behind #CSforALL? #satchat
A1- In working with Newcomers, specifically, #CSforAll is one onramp to language and content learning that crosses cultural fault lines. #satchat satchat
A2. Many students have never truly worked with computers beyond CCC labs or academic testing. In fact, the number of students who view their cellular devices only as social media and gaming platforms indicates a huge gap in tech knowledge #satchat
RT AngCleveland "A1 #CSforALL is truly for ALL - breaking down barriers to access so all Ss can access learning opportunities. It's about access to tools, informed educators, and a school culture with an eye toward equity & inclusivity. 💙 their focus on accessibility! #Satchat"
A2: All students need computer science because it is our world! Our classrooms need to change and we need to give our teachers the support to get there with their students...#csforall#satchat
This leads me to a question on why is computer science alwasy associated with math? Gone are the days when you had to be an engineer to program in a language that few people understand. We are at an age that I believe #CS4All can stand on it's own. #satchat
#CSforAll is thinking ... it is intentional and analytical ... maybe if we just stopped using the CS and called it thinking for all people would not be so afraid of it #satchat
A2- #CSforALL is about Increasing Critical Thinking Skills in Education and teaching skills for success is our role not just teaching content #satchathttps://t.co/mJz6RTGmTd
A1 I think the big idea for 1) all is cs literacy to understand the processes behind how CS makes things work - 2) for some it’s a path to career - not limited to CS but underpinning many careers right now. How important for future? Not sure #SatChat
A2: If we’re developing the whole learner to prepare him/her for a world we do not know, computer science, when implemented for all, opens doors for essential skillsets (coding, critical thinking, teamwork, creation) necessary for success. So, it’s about equity for all. #Satchat
This leads me to a question on why is computer science alwasy associated with math? Gone are the days when you had to be an engineer to program in a language that few people understand. We are at an age that I believe #CS4All can stand on it's own. #satchat
A2 All students need CS as it is become the way many objects around us work as in computers are starting to run everything we do including making us our fast food. #Satchathttps://t.co/CMT3Hi7bMy
There are also lots of jobs that are not “computer science” that do involve programming . “Computational X” is everywhere. Biology, finance, meteorology...you name it! #satchat#CSforALL
A2: This is not about one class in every school, but one literacy for every child. Every kid learns about cells because we are made of them. Every child should learn about CS because it will be a huge part of their lives #csforall#satchat
A2: As tech literate gen x, I know how to use computers, but don't really know how they work or the logic behind them. A missed opp for my Ss in my generation as @stormeducation says. #satchat#CSforall
A2: Computer science teaches students design, logical reasoning, collaboration and problem solving. All of these skills are valuable well beyond a computer science class and are needed skills for all students. #satchat
A2: They do not--and the format of the question belies a fundamental issue here. CS depends on logic (a good thing), and logic assumes premises.
The premise of this question is faulty.
#satchat
Early computer scientists were trained as mathematicians before computers were everywhere. They needed the math because computers didn't translate numbers to english. #History#NotAnymore#satchat
A2 CS helps Ss in more ways than just the tech aspect. It helps them develop the thinking and problem solving skills they need to succeed in an ever evolving world and job market. #satchat#CSforAll@CSforALL@lsudol
A2: Because we live in an increasingly digitalized world, which means you need both access to and an understanding of how to use the tools and technology. But more importantly, the tools and understanding allow you to be a self-guided learner #satchat
Due to the bandwagon regarding #CS4All there are many other places where student can get access to do coding but schools are the only place where it can be equitable for all students to have an opportunity to learn this skills set. #satchat
A2. The future is all about skills and having ability to use information to create-solve-develop-communicate-collaborate with others. #CSForAll allows students to be prepared for anything. #satchat
I can't think of a better reason! My sons are 2 and 4 and I continue to wonder what their futures will hold. Over 50 percent of their job market hasn't been developed yet! #satchat
I agree with your point Sandra. This made sense for us because we have a skilled and passionate teacher in the math department who could provide this starting point as one option for students. #satchat
A2 Is it a need for computer science? Or a need to have skills important to computer science? Students often see CS as math; but a good Logic course based in philosophy can build skills too. #satchat
A2 #satchat#CSforALL#PAEMST Computer science provides pathways to collaborate and solve global needs; water, waste, how can we be more efficient, less wasteful? The thinking behind code opens up many opportunities to explore higher level skills. All students need..
Q2. We study core subjects to help us understand the world around us. CS should be a core subject bc tech is integrated into so many parts of our lives. (Adults as well!) #satchat
A2: Computer Science isn’t just a subject area or a college major - it’s a mindset of exploring a bit deeper. With #CS you’re meeting students where they are (tech) and opening new doors. #satchat
A2: We study geology because we live on a rock, most people will carry multiple computers around every day - lets study them too! #CSforALL#literacy#satchat
As someone who JUST associated CS with math, I think this is a good point! It’s called computer “science.” It’s also an art. And in a way, it’s music. #cs4all#satchat
This leads me to a question on why is computer science alwasy associated with math? Gone are the days when you had to be an engineer to program in a language that few people understand. We are at an age that I believe #CS4All can stand on it's own. #satchat
A2: #CSforAll. A good example is a CS program called eagle eye where a student can use his/her eye gaze to communicate. It is the same type of program Steven Hawking used to communicate. The technology opens doors for everyone. #satchat
A2: I think as educators we have to move away from this business and career ready rhetoric. Of course it's important but I think we miss the bigger point, which is simply empowering students to be life-long learners #satchat
A2 As @codeorg says in my fav video: “Computer Science is changing everything!” https://t.co/Mfye5NbEVM Students are using technology and should have the opportunity to learn about the dev side! #SatChat#CSforALL
A2. Many students have never truly worked with computers beyond CCC labs or academic testing. In fact, the number of students who view their cellular devices only as social media and gaming platforms indicates a huge gap in tech knowledge #satchat
A3: At K12 CS instruction is different than college - Check out the K12CS framework https://t.co/JNGtDgFZvc for a great description of what kids should know and practice at each grade band #csforall#satchat
A2: I think as educators we have to move away from this business and career ready rhetoric. Of course it's important but I think we miss the bigger point, which is simply empowering students to be life-long learners #satchat
A2. The need for CS for all Ss is that computational thinking, design thinking, logic, resilience, etc. can be taught in other courses but the uniqueness of #CS4All is that the skills that are developed will be necessary when they leave education and graduate to work. #satchat
A2) I’m torn here because the word “need” is absolute. I think if we see CS as that important, then we should look at other areas that develop those same skill sets, like the arts or wood shop and justify a “need” for them too. #satchat
A2: The love of learning needs to be our focal point, not career readiness. When the two are reversed, then the message is that school is all about preparing you for the workforce; as opposed to preparing you for learning #satchat
A2 not sure everyone does but we have asked that question for decades abt other content we require - I’d love to supplant some old HS math requirements w CS and stats courses - CS applies logical thinking, makes math thinking visible, and things work #satchat
Computer Science shouldn't be an event. It should be WOVEN into the fabric of the classroom. Digital literacy should be an ORGANIC part of lessons and students must be given opportunities to CHOOSE the tech tool that best fits the learning task.
#satchat
A3: It should be integrated
into every curriculum. We need to get past the idea that computer science is just a 45-minute stand-alone class. #satchat#CSforall
A2: computer science and related skills are becoming as ingrained and necessary as core classes. Critical thinking, design, research, & comprehension #satchat
A3: Components of CS instruction can be a variety of things. Logic puzzles, games, makerspaces, robotics, using CS to solving problems and programing are all components of CS K-12. #SatChat
A2: Just as Ss r taught how 2 read so that they can b influenced by what has been written but also 2 write 2 express their ideas & influence others, learning CS can empower Ss 2 b authors themselves & create their own poems & stories in the form of programs & software. #satchat
A2: computer science is already a huge part of our students lives and learning. We need to ensure that they are literate in a language they are already speaking. #satchat
Portable hard drives, using them to create google docs, peer-edit documents, using Google Hangouts for discussions. Many students don't realize the power in their hands #satchat
A2. Many students have never truly worked with computers beyond CCC labs or academic testing. In fact, the number of students who view their cellular devices only as social media and gaming platforms indicates a huge gap in tech knowledge #satchat
A2 ALL educators are preparing Ss for sustainable careers of the future. We need to talk about CS + social sciences & other fields. This is a screenshot of one of most popular slides for @NCWIT Counselors for Computing. Look at this data I point to w/ arrows! #SatChat#CSforALL
A2: This is not about one class in every school, but one literacy for every child. Every kid learns about cells because we are made of them. Every child should learn about CS because it will be a huge part of their lives #csforall#satchat
Exactly but today things have changed. Many students that may not be strong in math but are fantastic programmers. I can say this because I have met several who are software engineers. #satchat#CS4All
A2- #CSforALL because the use of technology skills will be an increasing part of most jobs as demonstrated in this recent presentation by Bill Daggett #satchat
I want smart people to work on this problem with me. If you are looking to study, more importantly make #cs4all happen ask me about our graduate programs after #satchat We can tailor design a program just for you. Our flexibility is the bomb (https://t.co/cUWEgvOIvG)

OK, non-CS guy here. Question: what is the difference in the approach #CSforALL has vs introducing students to #digicit AND tech tool selection (right tool, right job) vs. coding vs general comfort level of tech use? Do all Ss need to know the backend language? TYVMIA #satchat
Design thinking, comparison, analysis, problem solving (not just the code or construction, but also life problems), teaching them to struggle and persevere #satchat
I think it’s important to distinguish that it’s not CS that teaches kids design, logic, etc., but the learning and doing of CS. It’s not a silver bullet. We have to be thoughtful and intentional about pedagogy, assessment, engagement etc. #Satchat#CSforALL
Exactly, the gaming, VR/AR, AI, website industries have changed the perspective of how CS is viewed today. It is an all encompassing subject and all students should be exposed to this subject. #CS4All#satchat
My son's elementary school just made one math teacher 1/4th #cs4all and that is awesome, but I think at K6 level we need to focus on issue as #literacies the web is simply the way we read, write, and participate. #satchat (https://t.co/P4a79vLE8b)
A2 this reminds of the question ‘When will I ever use algebra?’ Algebra helps us be a better thinker and problem solver. Isn’t the same true for CS? #satchat
Of course, and with music like EDM, tech is in music too. The question I have is in regards to the “need” to have CS regarded as so important where there are other disciplines that don’t get the love they need, yet foster the same skills. #satchat
A2: Not every child is going to be (or should be) a Computer Scientist. However, all children should be exposed to CS to learn problem solving and to identify those who are successful. I’ve seen incredible things from Ss I had no idea would be good at CS! #satchat
We just put in for a @mozilla#cs4all ethics grant to try and teach webVR through a lens of ethics using all of the awesome curriculum on @glitch#satchat Fingers crossed! Have scholarship money in there. (https://t.co/3muKTF6sdn)
A3: I'm a little hesitant on the idea of it being integrated in every curriculum. While I DON'T think it should be a stand-alone course, I'm also a proponent of creating digital-free learning environments. We don't talk enough about over-exposure to technology in ed. #satchat
Design thinking, comparison, analysis, problem solving (not just the code or construction, but also life problems), teaching them to struggle and persevere #satchat
A3: There is disturbing research about the negative effects of overexposure to digital technologies and I think this research must also frame our practices #satchat
A3: It’s an approach to progressive teaching and learning - not one thing b/c it will constantly evolve. If we focus on core skillsets (creation, collaboration, critical thinking, etc) & mesh them w/current tools (robotics, coding, unplugged) we will prepare learners. #satchat
If I am reading you all correctly, CS shouldn't be a module, or a moment somewhere in the curriculum, but rather infused and differentiated for all students at all levels. Yes? #satchat
Full agree. In the end we need to ask ourselves what the destination is. For me, we can value technology and digital venues for human interaction, but we’ve got to examine the goal. For me it’s about enhancing human face to face interaction #satchat
Because teachers constantly see students on phones and also perceive students to have more tech knowledge than adults, many assume students already understand computers. As soon as I take my students to a computer lab, I see how limited their computer skills are. #satchat
A3. Components of CS instruction include fostering inclusive computing culture, developing and using abstractions, collaborating around computing #satchat
Agreed but is the idea to expose students to CS? Not every student will develop mastery or love for CS but exposing a student to these skills prepares them for other areas. We need to change the pedagogy. #CS4All#satchat
A3: #CSforAll Too many parts to list but an essential component is digital citizenship. This must be taught early on so students understand the ramifications of their behavior in the digital space. #satchat#HTSDpride
A4: CS is definitely growing in schools but it is important for Ss and Ts to know that CS is not just for students who what to pursue a career in CS. #SatChat
A4: In two weeks @sigcse_ts will bring together almost 2,000 CS educators, researchers, & faculty to share the latest in #CSforALL Follow #SIGCSE2019 to play the home game! #satchat
A3. In Virginia, students in el school learn computer literacy and digital citizenship. As students move into middle/high school those components advance to working collaboratively online, coding. #satchat
I am not sure of the evidence that any transfer to becoming a better thinker comes from taking algebra or CS - in the way that either is typically taught #satchat

Q3. We can identify skills, but doing so may lead us to simplify what CSE should be about, analytical thinking & problem solving. Guidance from @ISTE, Standards for Students, https://t.co/9SoNUzEcTV, provides a more inclusive description for Computational Thinking.

Ok..I am about to date myself like you did. Attended college and learned languages based on a computer that filled up a room. These languages have evolved. I am happy not to have to typing major lines of code to the computer to perform 1 function. #CS4All#satchat
A4: We are seeing coding give way to broader problem solving - #CSforALL means thinking about the problems in your world and considering technology as part of the solution #satchat
I can see that, the question that keeps coming up in my head is whether it’s the world we want in the end, or whether it’s the world we are left with. #satchat
A4: In our experience, we are seeing a larger concentration of #CS integrated into all grades at the elementary level and at the middle/high it’s an elective - is that what others see as well? Why is that? #satchat
I facilitate the Fabrication Lab classes. I was asked yesterday How I teach that class ... my response "I don't" ... I assign a project and we build and that process teaches the kid what they need to do ... I show them how to use the equipment ... assist them in process #satchat

A4. CS is increasing rapidly within schools and allows students to see the impact of computers on their everyday lives while teaching them to use CS appropriately and safely #satchat
And not every child will become a scientist/mathematician/novelist etc. But we wouldn’t question the teaching of science or math or English lit (I hope). #satchat
A2: Not every child is going to be (or should be) a Computer Scientist. However, all children should be exposed to CS to learn problem solving and to identify those who are successful. I’ve seen incredible things from Ss I had no idea would be good at CS! #satchat
As @lsudol said, all kids learn basic biology. They don’t need to learn “a language”, but in order to be an informed, empowered citizen, they benefit from understanding basic programming, how networks work, how data is generated, used & collected etc. #satchat#CSforAll
I now try to teach our new teachers to throw away expectations and meet their students where they are. We must stop being the angry people yelling at clouds about what our students don't know. Instead, we must focus on teaching them what they should know. #satchat
Yes....I shake my head often and the word "incompetent" scrolls across my mind when I watch them try to do a basic task. But then I use it to teach them those skills.
A4: That more schools/districts and states are incorporating CS instruction, both as a stand-alone course, as well as it being integrated more widely among other content areas #satchat
I think #CSforAll is not really about teaching ... it is about creating opportunity for the kids to do ... letting them fail ... helping them think about different ways ... letting them take something that is inside their head and make it tangible #satchat
All for #CSfoALL but it should not replace high school math (Trig, Calculus) if a student plans to pursue a #STEM degree. Data proves math has a significant affect on #STEM degree completion. #satchat
A4: Another trend I've noticed is much more problematic. The design, use, and implementation of educational technology and tools is largely being led by corporate America (i.e. google, microsoft, etc.) rather than educators #satchat
In most states, students in elementary school start with a basic computer class. learning the components of getting online, online safety and learning how to search for a topic. #satchat
As @lsudol said, all kids learn basic biology. They don’t need to learn “a language”, but in order to be an informed, empowered citizen, they benefit from understanding basic programming, how networks work, how data is generated, used & collected etc. #satchat#CSforAll
A4: #CSforAll. Artificial Intelligence is the biggest trend in CS right now. We are already using AI to score students on state tests. Most people use Siri or Alexa to find information, and grammarly to help fix mistakes. Personally, I like the data viz trend. #satchat
Sorry about being so late to the conversation this morning! My hope is that someday we no longer need Computer Science courses and that tech education becomes seamlessly integrated into all learning...an essential tool enhancing all forms of learning! #satchat
A5: You need a teacher who is willing to allow the students to take risks and encourage students to persevere. You need an admin who is going to support the teacher and encourage the risks. #SatChat
A5: Maybe more CS for teachers. And I don't mean playing with cool gadgets that somebody brings out at a PD day. When I tried to learn coding I felt the same feelings of dread creep back as when I gave up on Math way back in HS. Incompetent! Fixed mindset. #satchat#csforall
A5. We have recently transitioned to a 1-to-1 setup with Macbooks. Many of our students do not know how to use many basic features. Thus, my ELA course in many ways becomes a mini-tech class. Not that I mind :) #satchat
Programming & network design are a separate skillset from producing, culling, & organizing data which is separate from general familiarity and tool use & integration.
We all drive cars. We aren't all mechanics. Many can't change oil or a tire.
So why is CS different?
#satchat
I’d go beyond exposure. We don’t talk about exposing kids to any other subject. A basic understanding to the extent that it allows them to be informed and active in a world that is increasingly built on Computational technology. #satchat#CSforALL
A4: Seeking ways to authentically embed CS throughout curricular experiences in purposeful ways. T’s & S’s engaging in a learning curve b/c it’s uncharted territory and there is so much we do not know/understand beyond the surface! #satchat
A4: When the concepts of computer science are embeddeed into daily learning / classroom experiences then there will be a trend in computer science. This can start with the problem solving thought process.
#satchat
I hear you. It is only a flicker, then I breathe deep and help them get the job done. Feels like tech for authentic reasons instead of just a CS class. #satchat#csforall
A4 More vertical planning! Check out this guide fr #MicrosoftEdu: “Computer science professional development guide How education leaders can build teacher, school counselor & administrator capacity to support equitable CS education” https://t.co/ZZefAc8Ip9#SatChat#CSforALL
Goal off #checkoutmydomain was to recognize there is no offline and online, only need for democratic education is civil society. Students learned #cs4all and then "checked out" their domain from school or local library, #satchat We can do this in your… https://t.co/aZyEm7qN6M
Held a sit down with high school Ss to hear their perceptions of our #digit curriculum. Heard loud and clear they would like #csforall as a requirement and not an elective. #satchat
Yes, agreed. I've worked alongside our tech director on those lessons and skills.
But the wide-ranging understanding of what #CSforALL is has me confused. #satchat
A4 make it contextual so kids see a real, tangible output from their input - can I make a Scratch game, can I make a script that will do something, can I make something move - I’m a fan of microcomputers as tools that make CS real, app production, game design #satchat#coderdojo
"He said, 'My mother just believes every word out of his mouth, everything she watches on FoxNews.
I can't reason with her. It's like talking to someone who's been brainwashed. She isn't the mother I knew.' "

As a programmer, I think this is a great point - with computer science, something can go wrong, but you think it through, correct it, and find out that it's just a step in the process #satchat
A2: I think as educators we have to move away from this business and career ready rhetoric. Of course it's important but I think we miss the bigger point, which is simply empowering students to be life-long learners #satchat
My daughter thought going to coding school, but then wondered, will there be a need for coders when coding has advanced to drop and drag? So CS must be skill based, not tied to a program or ideology. Students need to understand learning is a lifetime endeavor. #satchat
#satchat
Q5. Resources can provide technical solutions, but we need to help teachers see that these "ways of thinking" can be integrated, rather than isolated to the computer lab/CS teacher. Such an approach will help kids see the connections too. @istecert
Agree. Even if they don't have careers in this field, they will have the ability to fix their own issues at home or for family members. #satchat#CS4All
Sadly, due to limited school finances, I think many educators find themselves in a vulnerable position of “trying” new tech for free or trial periods. It’s a gateway for the corporations. #satchat
A5: Comprehensive + continual PD for all teachers and admin. Changing the mindset that #CS is a program or owned by a certain teacher because “they are good at math”. Allowing everyone to see how it translates and supports their students’ learning. #satchat
I think this is going to become more about teachers possessing the knowledge and the will to instruct students in how to use technology within their content fields #satchat
A5: One of the most valuable resources for computer science for all would be a list of classroom teachers, schools and / or districts that are having success, and would be willing to share the process they took to get to this point in #CSforAll#satchat
RT AngCleveland "RT ScottRRocco: A4: When the concepts of computer science are embeddeed into daily learning / classroom experiences then there will be a trend in computer science. This can start with the problem solving thought process.
#satchat"
Yes. It is the trend. The reason is that in introducing these skills early will better prepare students for middle and high school courses. It's like introducing a foreign langauge to elementary students. #satchat#CS4All
WIth the ##CSforAll mentality it can be rather scary because as a teacher you are NOT going to know all the answers and your solution may make it worse, but being able to keep working through it is the key. #satchat
A2: I think as educators we have to move away from this business and career ready rhetoric. Of course it's important but I think we miss the bigger point, which is simply empowering students to be life-long learners #satchat
A6: Our CS teacher and a few students recently presented at #Techspo19 in NJ. The presentation included some resources, along with some of the things we do out our HS. https://t.co/BGNZ5e2gKS#SatChat
Thanks! Love talking school climate and will join if I can. I can’t promise definitely on a particular chat and being on chats every evening but I always check out what topics are coming. #satchat
Yes, and I love that there are more and more opportunities for students to have access and be exposed to this teaching and learning from a young age so that they can develop these skills as they grow and become more actively involved. #satchat
We are collecting that! #CSforALL members include those districts, and we do monthly community calls where you can hear from them! Join @CSforALL - its free! to get notices for all of it #satchathttps://t.co/OaHjGHMe6f

Something else I’m reflecting on, #SatChat - when we build stuff (like robotics, 3-D printing, etc) what’s the “why?” Other than the feeling of power that comes with creation? Are we feeding our own egos as we teach kids the feeling of creating? Where does that take us?
A5: We have some resources, plugged & unplugged, as well as consultants & rubrics to help us w/PD. At our school, we are working to build capacity among student & teacher leaders to create support for others as we work to grow school-wide. #satchat

Increasingly yes! They are a core component of the @k12csframework and @csteachersorg standards and many new state standards that are being used to inform instruction in places like Chicago, San Francisco, New York #satchat#CSforALL
In reply to
@JeremyDBond, @k12csframework, @csteachersorg
I agree. While budgets are thin and stretched for schools, corporate America is profiting heavily off of education. I fear that the expenses of educational technologies/tools (which quickly become antiquated) will come at a great financial cost for districts #satchat
Perhaps we ought to be encouraging and structuring school fir more peer to peer learning. Perhaps the children and teens need to lead more, not the teachers. #satchat
I hear you, Jeremy. Thanks for thinking of us. Chatting every evening is really a difficult process so it is fun to chat with friends when we can. #satchat
It often appears to be checking a box for flashy and "cutting edge" instruction. If we do not encourage students to apply this further than creating artifacts, what separates it from the kinex, legos or lincoln logs from Kinder? #satchat

Is learning to crochet or knit like a programming language? I think so - input logical thinking output a sweater .. what abt writing poetry? Responding to a document based question? Building a rectangular box in a maker space? Making a board game? Writing a play? #satchat
But the best way to get started with #cs4all for students is to start on your own learning. To fix the world begin with yourself #satchat (https://t.co/KYCXKtUF1X)
A6: Join #CSforALL! its free, comes with resources (not spam) and connects you to a community of practitioners, researchers, curriculum providers and more! https://t.co/OaHjGHMe6f#satchat
@MaryAnnReilly Gamers fascinate me. They scare me too. I think about Neil Postman's book: Amusing Ourselves to Death. But there is definitely a continual learning curve with gamers; and, they teach one another. #satchat
Other than creating machines that will do our bidding and make our lives easier. As a sci-fi geek, I think about Star Trek:TNG episode “Measure of a man” #satchat
Yes! Telling our stories and sharing is so important! Come join us every other Wednesday at 7 Central for the #csk8 chat. It’s full of people rocking CS in their classrooms every day and they love to share! #satchat#CSforALL
Not learning to knit per se, but learning how to create a pattern others can emulate. I can knit; but don't have the ability to puzzle out how to design a sweater pattern, for example. @pammoran#satchat

Q6: We need to advocate for our students with our state lawmakers. CS is crucial in building 21st-century schools. States need to make it mandatory that every school from elementary to high school include a true CS curriculum. https://t.co/MrX6aHmmIu is a great resource #satchat
#satchat
Q6: Many resources avail from @iste. We need to recognize schools are also severely affected by data privacy laws which are clearly necessary, but have drastically reduced what Ts can use in the classroom. Not all districts are willing to have Ps sign consent waivers.
True - heard a parent describe a child teaching herself from YT the other day ... they go to the net as a learning tool to experience how to do do something while we baby boomers are still turning manual pages back and forth - #satchat
A6. Continue to work with our students each day to continue to build their tech literacy when problem solving. As teachers need to continue to collaborate on ways to incorporate technology into every lesson. #satchat
Actually I think this is onto something - we teach kids how to “knit” with computer science. How often do we teach the larger strategy that goes into making it useful? #satchat
THAT'S THE END OF TODAY'S #SATCHAT

A6: I think the next question for us is how do we better connect students so that they can continue to learn and grow in the area of computer science. #satchat
Pam, do you want to know how often I hear: "Mom, just Google and find a YouTube video!" Which ends with an eye roll and that mom-you're-so-pitiful sigh! @PamMacKenzieMCJ#satchat

In @NYCSchools when admins are caught cheating and fixing grades on state exams, they are not fired or put into jail. Just promoted you can just a quick Google search to reveal dozens of admin in the NYC due that cheat #edchat#satchat#adasa@csa_hs

Enhance our world by opportunities for all no matter their abilities. Being able to predict medical issues before it becomes a major issue using health data to run an analysis on a diagnosis. Doctors using 3D imagery to practice surgeries that are life-threating, etc. #satchat
I’ve watched kids in @coderdojo camps / multiage/ for years and they work to learn how to make things happen very differently than we adults teach them CS - they learn programming languages like we learn to talk .. very focused on doing something they need or want to do #satchat
