Hey #NoVAedchat! I'm Margaret, ed specialist in Fairfax. I work with schools as they shift their instruction to be more student centered and provide equitable opportunities to all students!
Hello #NoVAedchat Brian joining from Fairfax, former English teacher, now ESOL data specialist. Hoping to see @libraryms and @coreythornblad I recently learned that SIRI can turn on the iPhone flashlight, small thing but totally life changing.
Hi, I'm Debbie, a Technology Specialist at Vienna ES. There are lots of things I am curious about, but today because of #ETCoaches, I have been thinking about #blogging#NoVaEdChat
A1: research online, follow twitter feeds, read books, engage with other colleagues about similar interests, attend workshops or trainings. #NoVAedchat
A1 I usually learn about them on twitter or from talking to people I know. I'm a total talker... today @scholarcation and @Sa_rah_Olson and I were talking about books to read and podcasts to listen to. I now have a longer list! #novaedchat
Ooooh! Do you blog? I love to process my thinking that way AND I struggle to make time or make it a priority. I want to do more of that but have dropped the ball lately. #NoVAedchat
A1: my teacher tribe is always inspiring me! And OBVIOUSLY #novaedchat is a huge inspiration. Twitter really has been a game changer for my personal learning
Do you follow edu-peeps on instagram and learn that way? I have kept my personal stuff on insta and my professional stuff on twitter. FB is kind of in between when I use it... Don't want to miss out if the good stuff is on insta!! #NoVAedchat
Me too. Purchased her book, and now my cluttered daughter who owns 5 times more clothes than I do wants to organize. It will take days. We are on day two. This was before we started. We put ALL of her clothes in one place. :( #NoVAedchat
What is your goal? Do you want to start your own blog or something for your school? I'd start with a wordpress or blogger site with your personal gmail if it's not directly for your school/job #novaedchat
Sometimes I wonder if maybe “new” has been overhyped when it comes to edtech. We keep looking for something different and fail to make good use of what we already have. #NoVaEdChat
A2: for my k-3 school, a tool is good for our kiddos if it is easy to get to and has systems in place to support students understanding of navigating the tool. #NoVaEdChat
A2: it has to be relevant and practical. Just because it’s a shiny new thing doesn’t mean it’s going to connect with the kids. I’m constantly offering up new options, some don’t fit. Have a conversation, adjust and redo or move on #novaedchat
A2 So I pretty much attempt to use everything for my students even if outsiders say it won’t work for my students. It might not work for all but it might work for that one. It can cause stress but I want my Ss to have access to all #NoVAedchat
Very good point - just this week @Mrs_Ziab shared a new way to use a tool we have had for ages. Whether that feature was new or not, I have no idea, but it's new to me! I like learning more about the things I already utilize #NOVAedchat@timstahmer

A2.2. I really love it when a new tool clicks with real world applications: Adobe, google, etc. are all going to support their world post school #novaedchat
The tools that I recommend are those used by the students themselves. We need to work harder to give control of the technology to the kids. They often find more imaginative ways to use it that we can conceive. #NoVaEdChat
I’m Elizabeth, and I’m a 4th grade teacher at Mount Vernon Woods ES. I’m excited to see what the #NoVaEdChat community has to share tonight. Also, here’s actual footage of me making it through this week 😂
"have a conversation, adjust and redo or move on" modeling that reflection is KEY! Kids (and colleagues) need to know it's ok to try something and not love it. Figure out why... reflect, refine or bail out. @ProfeTravis#NoVAedchat

I just use it for listening practice and culture. But I have a dongle that lets me stream from my phone since Netflix is blocked... we’ll talk! #NoVaEdChat
Yes! I had an administrator once ask me, "So what's the new Kahoot?" But really I value tools which allow us to have Ss communicate learning in multiple, varied ways. Padlet, for ex, is a tool many Ts are familiar with and you can continue stretching how Ss interact! #NoVAedchat
A1: I’ve gotten sooo many great ideas from Twitter & peer observations. Being able to “peek” into other peoples’ classrooms has been one of the most impactful practices in my own teaching career. #NoVaEdChat
I tell my students to please tell me when something isn’t working. I’ll change it. Read more about it and try again. I count on them to tell me when something doesn’t work for them.
@ClassroomScreen has been a game changer in my room. I put up my objective for the day, the days to do list, a timer, a digital clock and a QR code on the board. I have recently discovered QR codes and their use in the classroom. #NoVaEdChat
A3: so a simple tool I have used for MYSELF recently is digital post-it’s and googles keynote. And analog tool I have used for myself recently is my #bulletjournal#NoVAedChat
A3: A new tool that I just started using is @instagram . I joined it to participate in @gcouros book study for Innovator's Mindset- but am finding new things to learn there too.#teachersofinstagram .#NoVaEdChat
@Flipgrid & @GoogleForEdu. Having the ability to listen to all of my students skip count and Note their errors and misconceptions on my own time and not to have to pull them one on one has been a huge timesaver. I can’t imagine teaching without #GoogleClassroom. #NoVAedchat
A2: A tool/resource that’s a good fit for my students has to:
-lend itself well to scaffolds
-have options for assessment
-provide opportunities for all students to be successful #NoVaEdChat
Your bullet journal is beautiful! I've been using my @getRocketbook - reusable notebook (never run out of pages) that has an app to send my notes to organized folders in google/email to folks. It's keeping me on top of notes from #AllTheMeetings#novaedchat
A3: the draftback extension is a new fave! See keystroke by keystroke student work in docs and graph progress. It’s awesome for digging in on digital work and seeing HOW students are working #novaedchat
A3: I've been playing around with @IFTTT recently, connecting a Twitter hashtag to a Google sheet, to help ESOL moderate our #ELchatFCPS Every time someone tweets the hashtag, their contribution to the chat is recorded #NoVaedchat
A3: I’ve been on a webquest kick lately. Curating articles, videos, texts, etc. and providing a prompt on Flipgrid has been very effective. I use a checklist to take anecdotal notes/check for understanding as I watch their videos, which helps me tailor instruction. #NoVaEdChat
A3 Another oldie but goodie - @alicekeeler created this chrome extension that allows you to record 30 seconds of video feedback for kids, automatically puts it in google and copies the link so you can leave it in a comment or google classroom #novaedchathttps://t.co/GwESXyNUn5
It really is amazing. I have another @IFTTT setup for our neighborhood pool. Life guards use a Google form when there's a weather related closing, and the info automatically gets sent out on Twitter and email. One click and everyone knows the pool's closed. #NoVAedchat
A4 I want to know more about podcasting - I've heard a couple lately that have me interested! @MrsLanghorne and @SraCory both have created podcasts interviewing teachers about learning in their school #novaedchat
A4 Not a tool at all, but I'm recently obsessed with the REAL history. Not the stories we've been taught. I read and have been listening to podcasts that are basically investigating and documenting what was left out. Now I want to learn all the things #NoVAedchat
A5 I currently need a way to embed all the tweets from a hashtag on a google site. Apparently twitter killed off this feature using embed codes (can embed a user timeline, a moment, etc, but not a hashtag) #novaedchat
A5 I want to be able to transition between audio book and ebook and not lose my place. Not really education related i guess... unless it's students who are doing the reading. #NoVAedchat
A5: my gap is always great feedback. The tools that best support MY end of the classroom help me give quality and timely feedback to my kids #novaedchat
YESSSS!!! There has to be a way. I'm often transitioning between audio book and paperback. I want a way for me to tell the app what print edition I have and it to give me page numbers. i can't always stop at a chapter end/beginning #NOVAedchat
Podcast fever has spread through @mcleanhigh! Many of our Ss are podcasting to demonstrate their learning or argue their perspective. We are making our learning audible! #NOVAedchat
Even better. I connected bookmark for your paperback that scans the page and knows where you are in the book so you can pickup where you left off in your eBook and audio book. #NoVAedchat
Having students record podcasts is a good start. The next step is finding a way for them to have an authentic audience for their work. They need to distribute their work to a world outside of the “walled garden”. #NoVAedChat

Could you start a student audio share site within the g suite so Ss can share their product WITHIN the garden? It’s not perfect but it’s a start! #NoVaEdChat
