One of my favorite ones was the Energy Skate Park. I loved the fact that you could change so many variables and explore different aspects of force and motion. Could also tie to great space phenomena. #NGSSchat
    In reply to @TdiShelton, @2footgiraffe
  • JMNorrisISP Aug 2 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: When I was in the classroom, the extent of my edtech was a Promethean Board. 😬 I have a lot of catching up to do, and I remain a healthy skeptic of much edtech. Must be transformative and purposeful and not overused. #ngsschat
  • ChristineMBolen Aug 2 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: We are 1:1 with Chromebooks in our HS. I have a bit of inner tech geek, so I love to find new ways for students to interact with information/materials to experience science in new ways. #NGSSchat

    In reply to @DrPrinceEdu, @PhETsims
  • BaronDana Aug 2 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1: The most common edtech tools I used in the classroom were collaboration tools (like google docs) that allowed students to work together in ways they could never have accomplished in my classroom walls without tech. #NGSSChat
  • 2footgiraffe Aug 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2 I love edtech in the classroom for the ease of connecting students with professionals outside the class. #ngsschat
  • Dassel Aug 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A1: #ngsschat I love Google spreadsheets for collecting data from multiple sections, you can create real data sets to analyze with the #SEP
  • Ted_NSTA Aug 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2: I think the most important aspect of #edtech is that students can more easily explore phenomena that can't be directly experienced in the classroom. Also edtech lets students manipulate data. Finally, it allows for different methods of discourse. #ngsschat
  • mlloesing Aug 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2 Ed Tech gives students chances to collaborate, even when they are at their own homes, to take data from simulations that would be unsafe to do in class, and to view clips of phenomena that can spark ideas and bring out preexisting knowledge. #NGSSchat
  • TdiShelton - Moderator Aug 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
How do use today's meet and padlet? #NGSSchat
    In reply to @2footgiraffe
  • susan_german Aug 2 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: When constructing explanations or arguments, allowing students video their answers instead of writing them provides equity. Sometimes, the student videos first, then transcribes (their decision to transcribe). Other students (with autism), do the video tape. #ngsschat
  • Ketchteachsci6 Aug 2 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Students are more engaged and motivated; #edtech gives Ss the opportunity to be creative, collaborate, communicate, and use critical thinking (4Cs of #21stcenturylearning) #NGSSchat
  • DrPrinceEdu Aug 2 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Ss use @Flipgrid or @Seesaw to share their ideas/claims/evidence/findings #ngsschat

A1: #ngsschat I love Google spreadsheets for collecting data from multiple sections, you can create real data sets to analyze with the #SEP
  • halliesmills Aug 2 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Edtech has allowed my Ss to more efficiently record data and analyze it. It has led to new ways to collaborate, to understand concepts, and to communicate. #ngsschat
  • ChristineMBolen Aug 2 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: I use edtech to enhance collaboration and to give students a variety of different ways to display their learning. It also helps them see/experience things that we wouldn't have been able to in the past. #NGSSchat
  • 2footgiraffe Aug 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT
I do need to find a better way to measure how these contacts with professionals benefit the students. #ngsschat - the contact makes me happy but not sure of honest student perspective. #ngsschat #scicomm
  • KristinOropeza Aug 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: How does it NOT benefit them? It makes learning so much more engaging, relevant, and allows for more collaboration than traditional methods. Ss are researching on their own - gathering knowledge and bringing ideas to the table that go beyond their science textbooks. #NGSSchat
  • krademaker Aug 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT
ME TOO! it is amazing how scientist, aquariums, and museums will zoom right into your class to chat with the kids.#NGSSchat
    • 2footgiraffe Aug 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2 I love edtech in the classroom for the ease of connecting students with professionals outside the class. #ngsschat

Love the video explanations-- we used them in our classroom as well! #NGSSchat
    In reply to @susan_german
  • susan_german Aug 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: Another example, using pHET simulations. While I like students to manipulate materials, the wave simulations allows students to get the information out of the investigation that I want them to without the slinkies being tangled. #ngsschat
  • AllieBBogart Aug 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: The addition of tech tools has the ability to allow for student creation (drawings, videos, models) so that students can demonstrate their learning. #NGSSchat
  • olgacammer Aug 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2 Ss are able to go deeper with their understanding of concepts. Learning doesn’t stop because the lesson did. #NGSSchat

  • revel56 Aug 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT
I love how good sims can help s’s see what is happening Sub micro. I esp love sims that allow s’s to manipulatevariables and figure stuff out that they question.#ngsschat
  • AllieBBogart Aug 2 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2.2: Using proves to collect and analyze data gives students evidence to use in a CER. #NGSSchat
  • krademaker Aug 2 @ 9:22 PM EDT
I also love how it can help our absent or homebound students keep up with what we are doing in class (if they choose that it). #NGSSchat

Q3: What are some of the challenges when using technology with our students? How can we mitigate those challenges? #NGSSchat
  • revel56 Aug 2 @ 9:23 PM EDT
I also love that edtech can diversify how students communicate their understanding. With a good LMS, feedback is so much easier and more effective! #ngsschat

Q3: What are some of the challenges when using technology with our students? How can we mitigate those challenges? #NGSSchat
  • halliesmills Aug 2 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3: Sometimes technology can distract from the learning. You have to use it purposefully - not just to say you're using it. #ngsschat
  • 2footgiraffe Aug 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Agreed. I told students today that I will be broadcasting class live. They were surprised and also excited. We will see if any toon in from home #ngsschat

A3. One huge challenge is dependability. One alwaysneeds a fall back plan!#ngsschat
  • mlloesing Aug 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3 The biggest challenges my teachers face are that sometimes the tech doesn't work, or the internet is down. This makes it necessary to always have a plan B, so that instruction continues regardless of the availability of tech. #NGSSChat
  • susan_german Aug 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3. ArcGIS will provide a challenge by being something new. I am currently working on smaller activities designed to help students understand how GIS works without the computer. For example, using overheads so students get the idea of layers for the maps. #ngsschat
  • TdiShelton - Moderator Aug 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Agreed-- creating the need to engage with tech and norms around its use is critical :) #NGSSchat
    In reply to @halliesmills
  • Ketchteachsci6 Aug 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3: Not all students (& teachers) are at the same tech skill level; time is needed for them to learn a new #edtech tool; games/chat can be a major distraction #NGSSchat
  • MrsBarnett_Tchr Aug 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT
In order to teach with tech I first need to teach the tech (how to use it, what to do with it) - so tech learning takes time b4 the application can begin #NGSSchat

Like others, I’ve found success with using cell phone for labs. For environmental science, I had Ss use the grid on their cp’s as quadrats for collecting quant data - Ss were engaged and took pictures on their cp’s for the sake of formal lab reports. #NGSSchat
