Hi everyone! Ted Willard, NSTA Resident Standards geek joining tonight's #NGSSchat from Colorado Springs where I have been attending a #FiveTools workshop this week at #BSCS.
Finally not traveling or with connectivity! Bev here from Lincoln, former HS teacher in Colorado; currently working on indigenizing chemistry curriculum. #ngsschat
#NGSSChat: Looking for new #edtech, #STEAM content or professional growth experiences? Registration is open for the 2018 California STEAM Symposium! Join us in Long Beach, Oct. 28-29th for 2 days of learning & inspiration. https://t.co/1opJ6ITQTV#cangss#CASTEAM18
A1. #Edtech to me is all about technology based tools that serve as vehicles for moving learning forward. They aren't the driver though; or at least never should be!
#NGSSchat
Educational Technology is a very broad category. Focusing on computer-based technology - I use Google Classroom and all related tools. I also have a projector plus interactive board. My latest favorite is MicroBit, Raspberry Pi, and Arc GIS
#ngsschat
A1. Students using their smart phones to record phenomena; to record their homework, to connect for tutoring sessions, and to remind collaborators of work & deadlines. #NGSSchat

#NGSSchat
A1: Since my class has 1:1 Chromebooks, we do a lot of work through Google Classroom. Students write CERs on Google Docs, work on collaborative slides, & we’ve been assigning our labs thru #hyperdocs. EdTech for me means using technology as a tool 2 enhance learning. #ngsschat
A1: Ss collaborate on Chromebooks using Google Apps, flipGrid, WeVideo. Ss use 3D software and 3D printers. Program Arduino, PocketLab sensors for data collection/analysis. #ngsschat
A1-I’ve used #edtech in the classroom for #stuvoice, @PhETsims, supporting literacy, sharing models, collaboration, and reflection. #edtech means using tech to support the learning environment. #NGSSchat
One of my favorite ones was the Energy Skate Park. I loved the fact that you could change so many variables and explore different aspects of force and motion. Could also tie to great space phenomena. #NGSSchat
A1: When I was in the classroom, the extent of my edtech was a Promethean Board. 😬 I have a lot of catching up to do, and I remain a healthy skeptic of much edtech. Must be transformative and purposeful and not overused. #ngsschat
A1: We are 1:1 with Chromebooks in our HS. I have a bit of inner tech geek, so I love to find new ways for students to interact with information/materials to experience science in new ways. #NGSSchat
A1. Students using their smart phones to record phenomena; to record their homework, to connect for tutoring sessions, and to remind collaborators of work & deadlines. #NGSSchat
A1. I use Schoology (LMS) imbed video and other media ... for online discussions. Gives quiet voices a place in the conversation. chromebooks and ipads.#ngsschat
A1: I’ve incorporated technology into our science lessons. Students worked collaboratively on Google Slides and Flipgrid during our study of Landforms and Plant/Animal Life Cycles. I also use @PearDeck for reviewing science concepts and vocabulary. #NGSSchat
A1 (Cont): EdTech to me is any “technology” (whether it’s brand new or created 20 years ago) that helps enhance good teaching in the classroom.
#ngsschat
we use hand lens a lot, students are amazed at what they can see and how there are amazing patterns in some organisms that can't be seen w/out magnification #NGSSchat
A1: The most common edtech tools I used in the classroom were collaboration tools (like google docs) that allowed students to work together in ways they could never have accomplished in my classroom walls without tech. #NGSSChat
A2: I think the most important aspect of #edtech is that students can more easily explore phenomena that can't be directly experienced in the classroom. Also edtech lets students manipulate data. Finally, it allows for different methods of discourse. #ngsschat
A2 Ed Tech gives students chances to collaborate, even when they are at their own homes, to take data from simulations that would be unsafe to do in class, and to view clips of phenomena that can spark ideas and bring out preexisting knowledge. #NGSSchat
A2: When constructing explanations or arguments, allowing students video their answers instead of writing them provides equity. Sometimes, the student videos first, then transcribes (their decision to transcribe). Other students (with autism), do the video tape. #ngsschat
A2: Students are more engaged and motivated; #edtech gives Ss the opportunity to be creative, collaborate, communicate, and use critical thinking (4Cs of #21stcenturylearning) #NGSSchat
A2: Edtech has allowed my Ss to more efficiently record data and analyze it. It has led to new ways to collaborate, to understand concepts, and to communicate. #ngsschat
A2: I use edtech to enhance collaboration and to give students a variety of different ways to display their learning. It also helps them see/experience things that we wouldn't have been able to in the past. #NGSSchat
I do need to find a better way to measure how these contacts with professionals benefit the students. #ngsschat - the contact makes me happy but not sure of honest student perspective. #ngsschat#scicomm
A2: How does it NOT benefit them? It makes learning so much more engaging, relevant, and allows for more collaboration than traditional methods. Ss are researching on their own - gathering knowledge and bringing ideas to the table that go beyond their science textbooks. #NGSSchat
A2: Another example, using pHET simulations. While I like students to manipulate materials, the wave simulations allows students to get the information out of the investigation that I want them to without the slinkies being tangled. #ngsschat
A2: The addition of tech tools has the ability to allow for student creation (drawings, videos, models) so that students can demonstrate their learning. #NGSSchat
A2: When constructing explanations or arguments, allowing students video their answers instead of writing them provides equity. Sometimes, the student videos first, then transcribes (their decision to transcribe). Other students (with autism), do the video tape. #ngsschat
I love how good sims can help s’s see what is happening Sub micro. I esp love sims that allow s’s to manipulatevariables and figure stuff out that they question.#ngsschat
.@Seesaw works on any platform. Teachers can post prompts.Students can post pictures, videos, text, or audio. It's choices allow all students to contribute, even in the primary grades.
I also love that edtech can diversify how students communicate their understanding. With a good LMS, feedback is so much easier and more effective! #ngsschat
Agreed. I told students today that I will be broadcasting class live. They were surprised and also excited. We will see if any toon in from home #ngsschat
A3 The biggest challenges my teachers face are that sometimes the tech doesn't work, or the internet is down. This makes it necessary to always have a plan B, so that instruction continues regardless of the availability of tech. #NGSSChat
A3. ArcGIS will provide a challenge by being something new. I am currently working on smaller activities designed to help students understand how GIS works without the computer. For example, using overheads so students get the idea of layers for the maps. #ngsschat
A3: Not all students (& teachers) are at the same tech skill level; time is needed for them to learn a new #edtech tool; games/chat can be a major distraction #NGSSchat
In order to teach with tech I first need to teach the tech (how to use it, what to do with it) - so tech learning takes time b4 the application can begin #NGSSchat
A3 limiting students to the sites they are suppose to be on, and the constant use of headphones (but the are not on) to listen to music when they should be listening to each other & sometimes me. #NGSSchat
A2: It gives students choices in how they present their work, it allows for students to have a voice (@Flipgrid or @Seesaw or video allow Ss to record answers or show their learning without having to do so in front of the whole class) & have different experiences #ngsschat
I think that is true to a point. More true with phones less true with computers. Many try to type with one hand and do not know keyboard short cuts. #ngsschat
We’d like to think that because they are digital savages, forget digital natives they understand all that there is to tech. They don’t. We have to teach them.
A2. Using video allows Ss to analyze their observations longer than the observation, more accurately than some of their drawings and notes. Good records. #NGSSchat
A3: I love this diagram of integrating technology. It shouldn't just be a substitute, we need to actually use technology in new ways. But, this also takes PD. #ngsschat
A3: One thing that I always worry about is students may assume that information collected from a simulation is proof that the world works in that way. Simulations need to be supported with data/evidence collected from real phenomena. #NGSSchat
A3: The biggest challenge I see is that many claims are made about edtech without much evidence, especially by developers and districts adopting programs. Just as we ask Ss to use SEPs, Ts should use them as well to evaluate tech use. #ngsschat
A3. By making it a regular piece of the instructional arsenal, students learn to use it powerfully and this alleviates distraction., it is not novel and they see that the instructor is comfortable and therefore on top of it... #ngsschat
A3: I always think Murphy’s Law with EdTech and try to plan lessons with that in mind. Internet goes down. Apps are slow and take forever to load. Things don’t go right. But it’s ALWAYS a teachable moment for both you as a T and for your Ss. They need to see that. #NGSSchat
A3: I find that the biggest challenges are getting students to use new tools (not fall back on the things they are used to) & being discerning consumers of information. #NGSSchat
A3. Keeping Ss on task instead of playing with the visual effects of the digital cameras on tablets and phones. . . and the ever lack of energy to charge everything. #NGSSchat
A3: There are such an abundance of tech tools out there that it can be overwhelming what to incorporate first. I think it helps to focus on the learning goal and then pick a tool that will transform the student experience(instead of just picking the tech that looks fun) #NGSSChat
A3: There are such an abundance of tech tools out there that it can be overwhelming what to incorporate first. I think it helps to focus on the learning goal and then pick a tool that will transform the student experience(instead of just picking the tech that looks fun) #NGSSChat
A3: I’m not as skilled with many of the tech tools that my Ss use, so Instead of saying ‘no’ or limiting use, I ask them to teach me how to use them, get tutored as they work. #NGSSchat
A3) One problem is access either at home or in the building. Could be an issue of not everyone being able to BYOD or the wireless not being strong enough. #NGSSchat
A3. Digital gaps can also be magnified for those without access to technology outside of school. Many school districts are putting WiFi on their buses. Those buses can be used throughout a community or in rural areas for students (and families) to use. #NGSSchat
A3: I’m not as skilled with many of the tech tools that my Ss use, so Instead of saying ‘no’ or limiting use, I ask them to teach me how to use them, get tutored as they work. #NGSSchat
A3 one of the biggest challenges for me last year was managing students on Cell phones. - I have a much better plan this year and so far so good. #ngsschat
A3) I was able to secure funding for 8 chromebooks for my classroom to help supplement to help kids who do not have access to BYOD. It should help. #NGSSchat
A3. Digital gaps can also be magnified for those without access to technology outside of school. Many school districts are putting WiFi on their buses. Those buses can be used throughout a community or in rural areas for students (and families) to use. #NGSSchat
A3: Also::: when tech doesn’t work immediately or the internet is down, I think that is an opportunity to model #techgrit and take your Ss through the Engineering process on how to try, try again #ngsschat
A3 one of the biggest challenges for me last year was managing students on Cell phones. - I have a much better plan this year and so far so good. #ngsschat
Leena Bakshi, Program Science Director @AlamedaCOE. This is my first official #NGSSchat! A3: Challenge: lack of teacher training for tech tools, especially in lower income schools: https://t.co/IwvscU4kxo
Q4: How are your #edtech classroom plans affected by School and District policy? In what ways are Schools and Districts supportive, in what ways would you like more support? #NGSSchat
A3: Some students don’t have access to tech. at home, so for Ts who assign homework that requires technology, this is a big challenge!! So, I don’t assign HW and if they need more time for labs or projects we have after school and lunchtime “Study Spot” #ngsschat
tech becomes a problem when admin automatically thinks we know how to use the tech they purchased so Ts get no training and then it just sits there unused. #NGSSchat
A1: I am seeing a lot of @scratch projects getting infused into science classes. It is a great way to look at mathematical and computational thinking. Teachers embrace the challenge and even if they don't know the program, they have students teach them. #access#ngsschat
A4. I know to follow school policy and who to get on board. As a user of ed tech and over 2 decades in the district, I am provided more leeway with being allowed to try things. That, and I am starting a doctoral program in ed tech. #ngsschat
A4) Only real policy issue is access to some sites they consider ¨offensive¨ but those are usually easily remedied. Bigger issue is funding for sites like @ExploreLearning that are useful. #NGSSchat
A4 District tech plan supported Tt and Ss learning. 1:1 iPads and Chromebooks. Tech coach for continued support. Now we have a coding school! #NGSSchat
A4:When we 1st got our 1:1 devices we had to record what we did with them every day to prove they were being used. Seemed like a wast of time b/c I was always using. Probably a lot of pressure for those new to tech. #NGSSchat
A4: I see schools supportive by having a technology coach work directly with teachers; having districts update their tech infrastructure to increase bandwidth and have multiple devices; AND an on-site tech manager @JohnnyTeqnico was awesome in helping with tech lessons! #ngsschat
A4: I think it’s a smart idea on the district’s part to provide Tech TOSAs who work directly with teachers. Districts can’t just invest in technology, they need to also put personnel in place to help guide those Ts that may not be as familiar with it. #NGSSchat
@mskmayer :) - have a set of 30 phone sized pockets on the wall. students must put the phones in the pockets when they come into class. #ngsschat - Didn't even need to remind them on the second day of school - I have a set of class chromebooks. We haven't turned them on #ngsschat
A4: Our District is poised to move and shake this year. We have a new director @JoeFuertsch and Tosa @RoniMacD who have pretty big plans for us. Rolling out @GoogleForEdu (hopefully) @nearpod and overall embracing change and innovation. I’m excited! #NGSSChat
Q4: How are your #edtech classroom plans affected by School and District policy? In what ways are Schools and Districts supportive, in what ways would you like more support? #NGSSchat
A favor to all my #ngsschat friends.
My daughter is just getting started as a writer for TV and film and she and her friends want to make one of her scripts into a movie.
Would you please consider donating $5 (or more!) to help her make this happen.
https://t.co/SelbRDB9h8
I'm not sure which Q! I LOVE @PhETsims and they also come with lesson plans that go with each of the simulations. I use the one on Forces and Motion all the time. It is a great tool especially for the "explain" in the 5E model. #ngsschat
YES! this is a huge problem - I took it upon myself last summer to participate in an #EdTechTeam summer cohort...I learned a lot (https://t.co/rAmNw4PN1S)
It's not how to use the tech, but how to implement it in a meaningful way. #NGSSchat
A4: I don’t want this to come across as bragging...but....#teambcsd offers amazing support for tech tools, integration, continuous training, workshops, site visits, but always with pedagogy of ‘only use it if it helps the lesson’ #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat we've had some complications switching to Chromebooks-which district likes b/c of cost- w/ all the probe wear we've collected over the years. Generally work w/ us to figure out plans
@Dassel@TdiShelton It was so great to have 0 phone problems to day in class. - Stresses me out so much when they are staring at their phones. I have seen other teachers use the pockets. Decided to use it this year for real. #ngsschat
Just your #ngsschat appeal for you all to DM myself or @VogelWendi about taking a turn on @NGSS_tweeps for a week to showcase your classroom! You know you want to so why don´t you?
One of our @spfii teachers @EbanezScience uses A LOT of google apps in his classroom. One of my favorite lessons to watch is when he uses Google docs and the chatroom to have students facilitate a Socratic seminar in the classroom digitally! #ngsschat
A4 B: We do have a tech coach & start each school year with PD provided by staff on different uses of edtech. The district also received a grant to send a group to our state tech conference each spring. #NGSSchat
A5) From a T standpoint - allows greater collaboration between a larger group collective to work on plans and activities. The Hive Mind is very helpful!! Love it myself. #NGSSchat
A5 EdTech is great to show phenomena that would not be possible to show any other way. Simulations allow students to analyze data and try to figure out the science behind the results. #NGSSchat
A5) From a S standpoint - allows them access to greater knowledge, tools to create and model phenomena they couldn´t otherwise, access to a large audience for creation. #NGSSchat
A5. Another project I am implementing with the MicroBits and Raspberry Pi is to have low cost sensors. So students are able to do more with investigations with improved measuring capability. #ngsschat
A5: There is so much we can do with EdTech in science. The collaboration opportunities...hands-on opportunities, PBL and inquiry-based learning that could be happening with NGSS just blows my mind. I can’t wait to try it in my teachers’ classrooms this year! #ngsschat
Our teachers from @AlamedaCOE during the NGSS@ACOE Project started the lesson on the water cycle, then used a card sort to build the algorithm, then input the steps into a @scratch project. Some teachers also remixed an existing project. https://t.co/yEPhM0xdVt#ngsschat
A4 - been fortunate to get Twitter unblocked on 2 school districts. Share the info and potential with school systems and there is a good chance they will listen. #ngsschat
A1. I use Google classroom to upload videos of myself to give directions/expextations when out. Improves student behavior when they see me. Subs love it! #ngsschat
A5) Edtech has allowed me the ability to bring practicing scientists into my classroom to Skype with them or to work with them on long term projects. This has added a whole new level to my classes. #NGSSchat
A5: There are so many possibilities to use #edtech to collect scientific data collaboratively and for formative assessment. Ss can use data from classmates to inform decisions. Formative assessment tools can give feedback to Ss and T’s to allow reflection on thinking. #NGSSChat
A5: #NGSS calls for students to examine phenomena and engage in collaborative discourse to make sense of the phenomena. #EdTech can help students make observations, collect and analyze data, and engage in meaningful discourse with their peers. #ngsschat
A4 In some ways I am very lucky to be in a small district where I am allowed to venture out and try new technology. I have been very fortunate using DonorsChoose as a means to bring new tech to my classroom. #ngsschat
A5) From a S standpoint - allows them access to greater knowledge, tools to create and model phenomena they couldn´t otherwise, access to a large audience for creation. #NGSSchat
Q5. Edtech can engage, provide access to the conversation, build common experiences, etc. all critical elements to NGSS implementation. Additionally, it can support colleagues. #ngsschat
#ngsschat Tech has been my reason to learn more -- I am fascinated by remote sensing and how to use that in the classroom. I've learned all kinds of science and tech to figure this out. Very fun.
Edtech can definitely increase collaboration and conversation, like using https://t.co/95FQW2aoGi to talk with scientists in the field and ask meaningful student driven questions. #ngsschat
Agreed-- agreed. Love how #edtech connected my students-- to each other, to students in other states, to scientists--- and how it has connected me + supported my prof growth! #NGSSchat
Q5. Edtech can engage, provide access to the conversation, build common experiences, etc. all critical elements to NGSS implementation. Additionally, it can support colleagues. #ngsschat
A5: I think it helps to see how and where edtech can fit in. EdTech is a supplement versus a substitution. Also, there is a fear factor. I was always afraid of CS because I didn't understand it. But then I see students just fly when they have access. #ngsschat
We used #GridPals with @Flipgrid this year and connected with a classroom in Texas. It’s amazing what technology can do to help our kids get together. #NGSSchat
Me too, I love those robotic kits and the ozobots. I bought some for my son, but really they were for me. He also is getting a drone for is bday! #NGSSchat

Closing the chat out tonight with Q6: What are some of your favorite #edtech tools and resources you like to use and why? What #edtech resources are you excited to try this year? #NGSSchat
Like others, I’ve found success with using cell phone for labs. For environmental science, I had Ss use the grid on their cp’s as quadrats for collecting quant data - Ss were engaged and took pictures on their cp’s for the sake of formal lab reports. #NGSSchat
Another EdTech tool is @goswivl where we had teachers film a group of students and then listen to their academic discourse about a science topic. Teachers were able to upload their videos and observe shifts in their students academic talk #ngsschat
Elements from NGSS:
INTER-E2: Tools and instruments are used to answer scientific questions, while scientific discoveries lead to the development of new technologies.
#ngsschat#ngsschat
A5.I'm looking forward to using controlled releases pathways in @itslearningUSA to force deep thinking on crosscutting concept prompts while assessing SEPs #NGSSCHAThttps://t.co/JABlyTv0Q1
More Elements from NGSS:
INTER-M3: Technologies extend the measurement, exploration, modeling, and computational capacity of scientific investigations.
#ngsschat

I collaborate with our EdTech Program Manager, @mexifornio. He is invaluable and I am so honored to be his partner! He helps with all of my EdTech! There are also a lot of tools to facilitate learning for English Learners (i.e. Google translate with photo recognition) #ngsschat
Closing the chat out tonight with Q6: What are some of your favorite #edtech tools and resources you like to use and why? What #edtech resources are you excited to try this year? #NGSSchat
A5 As we start to see students with 1:1 technology (chromebooks in Greece CSD) it makes it easier to implement DataHubs and probes that allow students to develop questions and conduct research #NGSSchat
A6) My goal is to have at least twice through the year to have my kids do podcasting and to create a video lab report. #ngsschat I think they could really get creative with the tech that way. We´ll see! @NGSS_tweeps
A6: Gsuite gives so many possibilities of what you can do & how you can do it. Cell phone recordings & pics of labs to include in reports. FlipGrid is great for student voice. Picktochart & pixton are fun ways to Ss to display learning. #NGSSchat
A6: I love Google Apps for EDU. They are so versatile. I love @Flipgrid and @Peardeck - ease of use helps newer teachers to tech. And then @padlet and @poppletny for mind mapping! #ngsschat
I am looking forward to using our swivel camera more during discourse, when s's are making their evidence public. Can edit video and upload to our classroom to review evidence. #NGSSchat
A6 We were fortunate to have a grant to pilot Explore Learning last year. This year, all teachers will have access. I am excited to see how they will use the simulations and how the Ss will respond. #NGSSchat
Closing the chat out tonight with Q6: What are some of your favorite #edtech tools and resources you like to use and why? What #edtech resources are you excited to try this year? #NGSSchat
A6. Spreadsheets for data analysis and graphing. Sensors for data collection. Microcomputers to teach coding (expanding on this for this school year). ArcGIS to teach spatal thinking (John Snow and the Poison Pump is taking on new meaning this year). #ngsschat
Q6. Using an LMS(Schoology) has been a game changer; especially when other involvements take me outfoxed my classroom. Additionally, google apps are super powerful collaboration tools. My new favorite I hope to explore more this year is google Science Journal. #ngsschat
Here is our collaboration with @mexifornio where we put together the principles of computational thinking and how it fits into the NGSS PEs by grade level. We also built a 5E learning sequence with math connections. Would love your thoughts! https://t.co/dOFbAVKcrt#ngsschat
A6: Our entire #mySci curriculum is now in Google Docs. I’m hopeful that this will make teachers’ lives easier and more collaborative, and I look forward to seeing how they adapt/differentiate the student journals to meet the needs of their individual students. #ngsschat
Closing the chat out tonight with Q6: What are some of your favorite #edtech tools and resources you like to use and why? What #edtech resources are you excited to try this year? #NGSSchat
