A1 Ive used art and music as bell Ringers to get kids thinking about things we’re doing that day. It doesn’t have to always be about creating art, right? #sschat
Good call, @flipping_A_tchr - it does NOT all have to be about creating. We need to think about how we INTEGRATE art into all kinds of work in our classrooms. #sschat
A1 Ive used art and music as bell Ringers to get kids thinking about things we’re doing that day. It doesn’t have to always be about creating art, right? #sschat
A1: one thing that I have personally done is discussed art values when teaching about supply and demand. It’s something tangible that students can grasp and understand #sschat
#sschat A1 We brought in Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and his friend Charles Moisant. They shared their story of art and animation. He talked with our 1980s class about the reemergence of animated films. Great experience for our students.
A1: I've seen some incredible lessons using music & art of various time periods being studied in ss. I've also seen creative use of artwork, including dance, integrated into lessons abt world religions & an amazing lesson abt the Holocaust. #sschat
I am a big fan of using political cartoons, photographs, paintings, etc to get conversation going in class. Have seen it be especially powerful when considering varied experiences throughout history. #sschat
A1. Just as music reflects history & culture, so, too, do the visual arts. Art is always a product of its time, and that's an important lesson in itself. #sschat
A1 We annotate music from different time periods as societal reflection, create WWI poems and visual to go alongside them, make original comics about history heroes, summarize events in an illustration, draw modern twists on fairy tales and more #sschat
A1) Passionate about this topic tonight! The arts help bring the story of history to life. Rather than a rigid curriculum routine in SS, I am all for variety. Music, cartoons, art creation - let's do all of that. #sschat
A1 Ive used art and music as bell Ringers to get kids thinking about things we’re doing that day. It doesn’t have to always be about creating art, right? #sschat
A1: Arts can be shown through education by not only showing Eurocentric art forms. Art is a great way to different cultures and lifestyles, and allow students to place themselves in the content. #sschat
A1: teaching APUSH and WHAP I use art all the time to teach culture and world events without spoken word. Been using Jacob Riis a lot lately in APUSH Period VI #sschat
A1. I use art in bell-ringers every Monday/Wednesday, students create sketch-notes, read and create graphic novels, use VTS to analyze art & contextualize the situation. #sschat
A1: I believe arts can be used in many different forms inside and outside of the classroom. Teachers can incorporate different types of art and show students different cultures and communities through art.
#sschat
A1: While teaching US history I have taught a rock and roll unit, which integrates the changing social dynamics of America in the 50’s and 60’s. Pretty awesome to have that dynamic lesson #sschat
A1 recently saw @APHxTeacher share a lesson about Realism's role in 19th c. shaping culture and wanted to head over to West Potomac High Va. where he teaches to check it out :-) #sschat
A1: Art in social sciences can be explored through the students learning about their cultures, homework assignments can ask students to learn about family traditions and where they begun. #sschat
Read that today. Really interesting idea. Love that it fits within the traditional school day instead of existing as a standalone charter/magnet school. #sschat
A1 I love trying to incorporate art into class. One of my favorite lessons is analyzing protest songs of the Vietnam era. 7th grade #HCS_SocStudies teacher #sschat
1- I’ve seen some world history Ts let SS spell their name in hieroglyphics or in Chinese letters or whatever unit they are on.I also like when teachers use modern songs that relate to history (Katie Perry’s “Dark Horse”, “High Hopes” references Manifest Destiny, etc) #sschat
In AP European History today we’re reading primary sources to learn about the Paris Commune and sharing what we learned using a mid-19th Century art movement called Realism. @FcpsSocial
A1) Similarly to @cheffernan75 I like to use images of art to get Ss asking questions and to pique their interest about the topic to be studied. I also like having Ss create art, such as icons for the features of civilization or logos for revolutionary movements. #sschat
A1: (continued) rock and roll gives students the opportunity to study a part of the racial dynamics present... one interesting thing to do is have students watch little Richard song tutti fruitti compared to pat boone #sschat

You are exactly right! Our National (and state level) fine arts standards place a great deal of emphasis on responding and connecting, not just creating/performing/producing, etc. #sschat
A2: Some of our students have language-based disabilities and challenges. Activating their knowledge in visual & auditory ways can be super-valuable.
#sschat
A2
I don’t know that it reaches ALL learners, but there are definitely some kids who are drawn to art in a way that others are drawn to text or videos or storytelling. It’s part of a balanced diet of teaching! #sschat
I've found that it gives students another avenue in which to express themselves. So far this year, I've seen incredible protest posters for the Progressive Era, postage stamps for WW2, and more.
#sschat
A2: By encompassing multicultural art all students to connect with the content. Without this connection students have difficulty wanting to learn because it is irrelevant to them. Further the art is a stimulus that allows different types of learners to understand the info #sschat
A2: Some of our students have language-based disabilities and challenges. Activating their knowledge in visual & auditory ways can be super-valuable.
#sschat
A2: I think the arts provide a method for tchrs to reach ALL students. Everyone connects in some way to music, dance, theatre, and art. These are great ways to reach students of different development levels and provides a great springboard for differentiating instruction. #sschat
A2: Provides different ways of connecting - besides visual and material art, I love playing music in the background. If you teach #worldhistory, follow @ERBeckman for his playlists #sschat
2: Hard to believe, but some people just don’t like SS like we do. We have to incorporate their interests, too, to reach them all. Not to mention, some students express themselves more clearly through art #sschat
A1: Using art is a way that students are able to express themselves and express their knowledge of a certain topic in many different forms. I believe it is important to incorporate art in the classroom and offer a variety of different options for students to choose from. #sschat
A2 History for music lovers provides fun music videos that use "pop" jingles to historical events & provides Ss visual learning for concepts, multiple perspectives, media literacy opps or just energizing bell ringers https://t.co/fsbZo3cAda#sschat
#sschat A2 Kyle Cook, of Matchbox 20, spoke with our students in our History of Rock & Roll Class. Shared his views on music and its history. He spent time playing the guitar 🎸 for the students. Made learning authentic and real.
A2 many Ss are drawn to the arts & can make connections to themselves this @facinghistory lesson connects art to Indentity & Individuality https://t.co/bRyRa7FMP2
"Ss analyze how their environment informs the ways in which they interact with the world"
#sschat
A2. What ELL students may lack in spoken language skills, they can make up in visual analysis and application. Art is a unique entry point that validates all learners. #sschat
A2) I like using images to help get the students to connect emotionally to history. I also like to have the ss do comic strips to tell stories. #sschat
Yes! Students making connections beyond just using language! Valuable tool! So many opportunities to incorporate movement and motion through dance and theatre, as well. Some students can benefit from that level of physical and kinesthetic connection! #sschat

A2) Using the arts in this word rich content area is another access point for all! Critical thinking & analysis when considering point of view can run just as deep in an image, as it does in an essay. #sschat
A2 Our Ss are so diverse and creative. Art brings history alive and sparks a special curiosity in Ss. For many, they can connect to history through art to tell a story. #sschat
Totally agree. I used a boombox and overhead projector in the mid-90s to have a "slide show" with music to introduce Vietnam War. Used a lot of clips from "Eyes on the Prize" for CRM which included a lot of music. #sschat
The arts take on so many different forms that can reach students who are different types of learners. A few ex: auditory through music, visual/spacial through illustration, and physical/kinesthetic through projects where they "get their hands dirty". #sschat
A2 you can also have Ss begin to see how art is all around them & has many POVs & meaning
https://t.co/y91LEwfyLl
Also can lead to Ss created their own public art on campus or in their community
#sschat

Great connection! I thrived in the "word rich" content back in the early 90s. Today's youth need more opportunities to interact and engage with content to truly make a connection and grow. #sschat
I used an old fashioned slide projector and tape deck in class today!!! about industrialisation. The Ss were so intrigued! The slides were mostly from the 70’s. #sschat
Music, Dance, culture, traditions, holidays, art is a way of expression so anything that uses expression is art. Include students are their culture in backgrounds by bringing them into the convo and allow them to share what they want about their history #sschat
A3. Music has been mentioned several times tonight, but I like to include poetry, fictional short stories, and am passionate about utilizing objects in the classroom ("reading" architecture & decorative arts, especially) #sschat
A2 Great convos and Qs from Ss about WWII using an image todat. They hit questions on all 4 Disciplinary Areas (history, civics, economics, geography) in the C3 Inquiry Arc we are using with the CA Framework Inquiry model. #sschat
Q2: We use Interactive Notebooks where the right side is for teacher-provided info & the left side is for student interactions. Those students who dislike the note taking part of class usually knock it out of the park by showing the information in a more creative way. #sschat
so true! I had some amazing SS teachers but I admit that I too would have benefited from this type of instruction today- more long term connections #sschat
A3
Art that I (me) leave out (I’m not speaking for all teachers)
Sculpture
Drama
Student created photography
Student created paintings
Comics (please don’t hate me)
#sschat
A3 I often began US History instruction by teaching students to read the engraved renderings of John White's watercolors from the 1585 Roanoke expedition, published in the 1589 publication, A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia. #sschat
My ability to help Ss take informed action in social studies was limited when Ss arrived to high school not able to decode. Literacy is about equity. We must teach all Ss the code of reading to be successful citizens. Pedagogy matters. #sschat#socialstudiesmatters#edchat
A3 - occasionally still have to “defend” the merits of comics as literature and art - although most are now on board. But it can be an uphill barrier and they are often overlooked. #sschat
A4 Art includes music, political cartoons, videos/films, sculpture, written works of a variety of mediums, clothing, jewlery, cave inscriptions. wood carvings. #sschat

I believe a lot of art gets left out of curriculum in general. It is important to change things up and try new things. Dancing, singing, and learning about different cultures can be very useful and important things for students to learn about and can incorporate art! #sschat
I agree with all these (except drama because, ya know, puppet shows!)
As @42ThinkDeep pointed out in a recent #sschat, there are some financial barriers to teaching with comics b/c those can be expensive! (besides displaying single pages with a projector or online, of course)

A3: Music! and poetry sometimes gets short shrift, but my daughter, 6th gr, who is has a learning disability in regards to decoding language, is learning how to create poetry, is so motivated to write! #sschat
Can't forget about Dance and Theatre. Great opportunities to study other cultures and religion here, as well. Kabuki Theatre, Beijing Opera, etc. Theatre is also so richly intertwined in history. SS connections are practically endless! #sschat

A3: We focus paintings, drawings, and images of the events we study. One of the best history classes I took in HS focused on the popular culture. What about the fashion? Music? Literature? #sschat
I need to know more about puppet shows in class. I have some socks that don’t have a partner any more. They can find new life in a puppet show!
#sschat
I was wondering when clothing might pop up! Just got to see Harriet Tubman's lace collar at the African American History Museum in DC, and it was incredible. #sschat
A4 Art includes music, political cartoons, videos/films, sculpture, written works of a variety of mediums, clothing, jewlery, cave inscriptions. wood carvings. #sschat
Comic books are an INCREDIBLE showcase of art. It most definitely deserves serious study in visual arts classrooms so I think it can naturally help make connections and integrate into SS classrooms. #sschat
A3: For me, poetry was a great conversation starter or spark for thinking. In APUSH, I used Ursula K. Le Guin’s poem, Oct. 11, 1491. Full of imagery and connections to the European discovery/conquest of the Americas. Perfect starting point that continued all year long! #sschat
Many of my students have loved taking popular music from their lives and changing the lyrics to what is being studied in class. Also an added treat if they are willing to sing and perform. #sschat

A4) Photography and looking at music as poetry. Favorite lesson during state testing- students take on the role of a figure/object in Civil War photography tableau and share POV. Paints a full picture with minimal writing but lots of speech! #sschat
#sschat A3 Brad Long, Buddy from the movie Hoosiers, spoke with our 1980s class. Shared what it was like to be an actor for the first time. Opportunity for our students to learn more about theatre arts.
A3: all sorts of material culture should be considered art as well - 9th grade world history Ss exploring musical instruments, cloth, weaving and sculptures, beads from W. Africa #sschat
A3: Sculpture is an power medium, too! You can make lots of connections to world cultures, particularly looking at ancient Greece and Rome, but also looking in other parts of the globe, as well. Architecture has been profoundly influenced by visual art movements, as well. #sschat
You won't want to miss the newly digitized All-American News from @librarycongress National Screening Room. All newsreels of African Americans from mostly the 1940s. https://t.co/2TID1ZMRxm#sschat

Claire Stockman is our awesome Arts Content Lead- she is willing to help any of us make connections and knows of a lot of great PDs to help! #HCS_SocStudies friends, you should follow @HCDE_arts ! #sschat
A4: youtube! it has so many great videos, just takes some finding
Also in younger grades I had teachers go through different historical time periods by role play. It helped to see POV
#sschat
A4: Local museums, get to know the Ed director, curators. Also, I go to @googlearts - you can curate your own collection to use with Ss. It’s been pretty awesome! #sschat
A4: 1st stop: visit with your fine arts colleagues! They would LOVE to partner with you! Some great resources include local performing arts centers, museums, arts commissions. Many produce #artsintegration lessons and develop resources for tchrs. #sschat
Yes- Ss need to learn how to decode and understand the historiography of artists as well. Love showing this video Art Sleuth: https://t.co/G6PVX5utat#sschat
My ability to help Ss take informed action in social studies was limited when Ss arrived to high school not able to decode. Literacy is about equity. We must teach all Ss the code of reading to be successful citizens. Pedagogy matters. #sschat#socialstudiesmatters#edchat
This is from @KenBurns Vietnam doc. It's 7m 23s, so doable for time, and gives some good context on the power of music during the war. https://t.co/tIhniAmgV1
Sure wish we could have been in your class for this unit @classroomtools#sschat
A4 While I've used comics and poetry since I started, I first thought about using works of art in comics at @slateinwi conference at a panel on Google Arts and Culture. #sschat
These are some of the puppets available for students to choose ("donated" by my teenage daughter)
Basically it's a skit performance, but students aren't visible onstage and they can read lines off their script without looking weird
#sschat
A4 All around the country - educators, artists, and authors team up at comic book conventions to teach a lot comics as art and literature. It’s been amazing. #sschat
A4. Visual Thinking Strategies, @NPG and Smithsonian American Art museum have outstanding resources to help Ts guide students through reading art. The Smithsonian also offers a summer institute for Ts at the Am. Art Museum & the Renwick Gallery #sschat
A4: Artists and other educators in your community! I'm fortunate to live with the director of @avarts who has helped me brainstorm ways to effectively incorporate arts into my curriculum. #sschat

We went to DC for family vacation last summer and I loved the First Ladies exhibit with the inaugural gowns at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. I'm not even into fashion but it was super cool. My daughter was more impressed with this (in reply). #sschat

I think it is one of those things that sparks curiosity and gets students interested in a subject and learning. That is usually always a good thing. Pop culture is valuable for providing that hook for students to experience deeper understanding #sschat
A4) Chapman University in CA hosts an annual Holocaust Art & Writing Contest. Student work submitted in ELA through the years showed the possibilities of using art as a summative assessment option @ChapmanContest#sschat
A4 I tend to get inspiration from a meuseum idea or just think of a crazy idea. I saw the French Slueth video and came up with a French Revolution & Art Lesson #sschathttps://t.co/pq0zes243W
Right, agree! We got a couple of names for you @ciullalipkin of @MediaLiteracyEd and @reneehobbs of Media Education Lab. Despite being pretty high up there in #medialiteracy land, they take the time to talk w/ teachers, and art is def an import area they discuss.
#sschat
A4 After looking @ Lost Gen & post WWI art I wanted my Ss to create their own and annotate it to connect to the content. #sschathttps://t.co/g5sz0r9Bev
Charles Dickens' novels were first printed as a serial story in a newspaper.... so he actually got paid more money for making a longer story!
#sschat#sellout#SorryStudents
A4. Art for non-artist teachers: What do you see first? Why? What do you see second? Why? What do you see third? Why? Leads right into self discovery of elements & principles of art. #sschat
A4 Museums both to visit but also online are a great resource as well as University and gallery collections! We in LA are foruntate to partner with them. #sschat
A5 In economics, Ss could study the art that appears on coins and paper currency; and the art that surrounds us as advertisers use it to manipulate us to purchase. #sschat

A5: A frmr colleague used political cartoons and propaganda to enhance connections in comparative politics. So much opportunity in the political world. Looking at the economy of music (streaming, royalties, how much artists make) can also be great for econ, etc. #sschat
Ask @baxley_nancy about this. Her husband is a college professor at UTC and will be lecturing @SMMHSEagles 9th graders about landscape paintings in the Tang and Song Dynasties in ancient China. #sschat
A5 In government, Ss could study the use of art (music, drawing, painting, movies, cartooning, etc.) as propaganda to manipulate our political beliefs and choices. #sschat
It’s all right here - I tell everyone this is why teachers need to share what they do and how Vicky is forever a hero in my house. https://t.co/yCbrZO76fH#sschat
A5: When teaching early US government, @MrsBrewer1 and I have had students create campaign posters, political cartoons, and hypothetical tweets and "twitter wars" to demonstrate their understanding. #sschat
A5: Thinking outside the box. I also think there are some great connections between psychology and music therapy & dance and would love to see more exploration in this area of arts integration. #sschat
A4 Got to say I was taught by Pat Johnston now at Holy Cross. And if you ever have the chance - take it. Some work by NEH participants "Picturing America" can be found here on US art: https://t.co/JBkfXv2Q39#sschat
I played "Electioneering" by @radiohead for my students one year, but I don't think I introduced it properly....

This is a great recommendation. Virtual access and subscriptions are becoming more prevalent. There are some top tier museums in NY, Chicago, and around the world with FREE digital collections. #sschat
A5 On civics front, gotta give it to music again. Have students make a playlist, better yet, a CD cover, but yet an LP cover; then you get to have a history of tech and music lesson too #sschat
A6: For my rural kids, other than digital access to museums, subscribing to traveling trunks meant I could get art to come to my classroom. #sschathttps://t.co/DSmc7E1S4l
And now for something totally different. Here's an odd and wonderfully engaging set of dance manuals from 1490-1920. The etiquette references are especially entertaining. https://t.co/36apNzM6tx#sschat
Also, I REALLY want to do this summer workshop with the National Portrait Gallery. It changed my social studies teaching game. #sschathttps://t.co/yacYkIKI70
A6: MIT's Visualizing Cultures has an amazing collection of Asian art with commentaries and essays to give background info: https://t.co/NpoGANCFIt#sschat
In my world history semester 1 course, students choose a historical theme through which to study the past. One of the choices is visual arts, drama, and music. I get a lot of great resources from students and they learn a lot from each other. #sschat
Closer to@home - I show a clip from Oprah where she takes kids from a Chicago inner city school to the suburbs and students spend a day in each other’s schools. Eye opening. #sschat
