Many times it takes a great failure to get you motivated to make a difference in the world.
Growth mindset is the essence of education. Without it, we wouldn't have a reason for teaching.
Can you tell us the actual tiger story?
Our comfort zone is like the cage at the zoo. If we stay in it, we won’t grow.

Helping Ss understand a belief in his/her capacity to grow.
What about those kids with survival skills that don't have a comfortable life? Aren't they constantly out of any comfort zone?
Growth mindset = belief in your ability to grow; ability to change your story
What are some useful ways to use technology in the classroom for younger students?
Love it. "Growth Mindset isn't something you just have. It's a daily battle."
You can't necessarily do anything, but you CAN learn anything!

If we are going to teach , we must walk the talk. Seriously. Every day.
We want Ss to have a growth mindset, but we operate in a system that punishes the process.
"Everyone has a massive capacity for growth"

We want our jungle tigers in real life, but expect zoo tigers in class. Somewhere, things need to change.
Do you believe you can escape your zoo?
If you create a culture that punishes mistakes and failures, it’ll be that much harder to escape your zoo.
A3: Cannot create a culture in my classroom, in our schools that punishes failure and mistakes.
Are we about looking good, or are we about getting better? https://t.co/UGCIB7gscF

Bam. Are we about being good or are we about getting better?
Are you about teaching your Ss to look good or about teaching them how to get better?
Hi, I am Emily Spilman. I am a student at the UNI and am studying Elementary Education.
Society teaches us to shut off emotions — let’s instead talk about failure & get to work on action to improve.

We need to create an environment that values getting good rather than looking good.

A person with a understands that failure only exist if you stay down. Get back up and try again
As your Ss — what could we have done to make that better?!

Getting better comes from struggle. It’s messy! You can’t skip the struggle section!
"Growth comes from struggle...." That's one that our current students don't get right now.
How have you been approaching fear!? Is it a way for you to learn or does it paralyze you!?
I agree 100%. Ppl cannot skip the struggle stage. They can get through their fears.
We have to show Ss that they are not is a set category. They can get better with hard word & effort. Celebrate the steps they take
Fear doesn’t mean you aren’t ready; it means you are human. Don’t try to shut it off.
Yes!!! Embrace and chip away at the struggle https://t.co/WBnc6oXgIg

Any time there is something new to learn-you will feel fear. It is the lizard brain of survival. Know it's there and deal with it

Pretty meaningful tonight: First time chiming in and not just watching the stream! Feel fear! It's a part of the learning game!
"Feeling fear does not mean you are not ready. It's just a part of the game." Escape the comfort zone.
The Q we should ask ourselves, Are we creating a culture where Ss & Ta know they can improve and grow
Good point . Don't let fear guide you. Break free from it.
Stories build your cage.
Fear keeps you in the cage.
TRUTH!! Embrace the human aspect! https://t.co/NEdHLrKwr3
Fear doesn’t mean you aren’t ready; it means you are human. Don’t try to shut it off.
Feeling fear means you are alive and not that you are "shut-off" Feeling fear is a guiding feeling

Stories build our cage and fear keeps us in the cage!! I think it is important to teach our kids that fear is normal!!

Mind. Blown. A-mazing insight on
"You just don’t have the math gene.”
Parents - DON’T SAY THIS! It’s a STORY that will become self-fullflling!
Exactly! By failing (always difficult) we show how to deal and grow from that failure! :)
As a parent: remember not to support the stories of fixed mindset!!! No self-fulfilling negativity.
Self-fulfilling stories (your’e not good at math) rob Ss of the mistakes, challenges, and experiences along the way.

As a T, it's not hard to create a in my classroom. Much more challenging as a parent, when my child is the student.
Have to remind myself of this more as a parent. Thanks for the reminder, .
I think failing gets a little easier after a pretty rough fail! It never feels natural, though.
Absolutely love the approach that uses for improvement. Keeping it real.
Well done . You've come along way since your Fremont County days. I hope to get you to one day :)
My staff NEEDS to hear your message! It is vital!
We are who our stories are. Sometimes we need to help our students change their stories "You are a math person"
Skills are made, not born. Probably just need to stop with this! :)
Glad that a book I read in grad school is one that recommends. Mindset by Carol Dweck.
Change the focus from performance to the process!
