We'll be using the standard Q1/A1 format in tonight's #NYEDChat. Get ready for an hour of engaged learning and great conversation as we #CelebrateMonday with our colleagues.
So glad that you are here, Laura. You are my first guest and one of my favorite literary luminaries. Thank you for accepting #NYEDChat's offer to be a guest moderator on Dec. 10th with @ERobbPrincipal.
We'll be using the standard Q1/A1 format in tonight's #NYEDChat. Get ready for an hour of engaged learning and great conversation as we #CelebrateMonday with our colleagues.
A1 Best PD is a #collegialcircle framework w/ open-minded K-12 edus learning asynchronously and collaborating with each other F2F. I created/facilitated this for 10 yrs and it is still running now thanks 2 a great instructional #leader. It was an amazing experience! #NYEDChat
A1: we took a problem our school wanted to talk thru. We then presented the problem. Answered clarifying questions. Then we were asked to sit and listen as the group discussed it. Very insight to get varying perspectives from educators from other schools.

#NYEDChat
A1: The best PD I attended was @EdCampBROOKLYN organized by @JuliB224. Teachers openly signed up to facilitate sessions. There is a free flow of of resource and idea sharing. Less cost and barriers to entry! #NYEDchat
#NYEDChat Graduate student here...I like the idea of self-guided PD through a well-structured hyperdoc. I also like the idea of earning badges...I'm not a teacher yet this is just an observation.
A2: One-shot #PD is not an ideal type of #professionaldevelopment because it does not promote ongoing learning. Adult PD needs to be continuous and synchronous to affect change. #NYEDChat
I LOVE working with badges. I established a badge program at Stony Brook U https://t.co/jfLGwQXJ6n This semester I think I am going to start using them in my classes. #NYedchat
Great ideas, @iamjaneandrews! Have you collaborated within a hyperdoc, too? It sounds like you're going to be an amazing, reflective teacher. #NYedchat
Virtually is a neat way to learn together but when you meet the virtual friend for the 1st time it is an aha moment and from there the learning explodes. Right @WymansWonders? #NYEDChat#WonderChat
Problems occur when it’s one size fits all, when it does not occur over time, when teachers don’t have input, when there is little or no follow-up. #NYEDChat
A2: There are quite a few #PD days that are one shot deals - not always applicable to the needs of staff. Staff does not always get an opportunity to share their voice in what they want to work on #NYEDChat
How to impact teaching and learning. What to learn from different grade level teachers about content. New strategies
The discussions revolve around experience, research in the field, and application of pedagogy. #NYEDChat
#nyedchat Fred from Richmond BC, just finished tutoring so joining in late (as part of my future PD).
I'm a math mentor teacher and retiree who still works in the system as a teacher on call.
Problems occur when it’s one size fits all, when it does not occur over time, when teachers don’t have input, when there is little or no follow-up. #NYEDChat
I agree, @LRobbTeacher. How will we see transfer if facilitators don't integrate teachers' prior knowledge and wisdom in a PD? Is this the way to bring about long-term, collaborative change? Value and trust teachers! #NYedchat
Solution: Take the money and invest it back into teacher salaries and then let them choose how they acquire their own professional learning. If a teacher feels valued, there is no stopping that teacher from developing. #NYEDChat
#nyedchat This sounds similar to lesson study. Lesson study was a powerful PD for me due to the collegial/cohort/learning community we formed. We always started with a problem together before tackling our targeted area to develop, observe, debrief & amend to continue the cycle
Hi all - Chris from ROC, NY, joining late (school board mtg!) A1/A2: Best PD experiences have been through @ELEducation - 3 day institutes that have you wearing student and teacher hat. PD that's always actionable in the classroom #nyedchat
A2 I think learner choice impacts adult Ss just as it does child/adolescent Ss. PD is also maligned because it can feel taxing on an already taxed community. The best PD feels supportive and is embedded in trust in the professional. #NYEDChat
#EdCamp is an excellent alternative to traditional PD. Participants involved in an unconference model where they lead the discussions around topics that are meaningful to them, and not to just some nameless administrator. #NYEDChat
You’re so right! Professional learning at building level is powerful when it involves teachers, honors what they know, and builds on this to improve instruction. Appreciate all you do for PL @Alex_Corbitt#NYEDChat
Just as we are moving our students past the traditional “sit and get” model with our students; teacher learning should be engaging and learner driven. Give opportunities to experience and create new content through learning at all levels! #NYEDChat
#nyedchat The problem solving we did together and displayed vertically for group discussion led to pedagogical understanding and transformation of our group's individuals. We personally SAW the power of exposing mathematics this way!
A3 Options to traditional #PD that impact teaching/learning: #EdCamp, #Nerdcamp, being a member of local educational associations, #elanetwork. Long Island has many opportunities for edus to engage in meaningful fruitful collaborative learning opportunities
#NYEDChat
Q3 #nyedchat Non-trad PD: I once took a self-paced online course (free) that taught better ways to teach online courses. It was very helpful--lots of videos to show how to do things, an expert to chat with occasionally and give feedback. I could do it on my own time.
A3 - Have to give a loud shout out to the folks at @FundforTeachers on this one. It's DIY PD that provides $$$ to help you explore that passion project, attend a conference, push yourself professionally and personally. The funding cycle opened today - apply! #nyedchat
Sometimes teachers just need time to think and chat with colleagues. They don't need someone at the front of the room lecturing. But that's what some people think PD should look like. #nyedchat
A3: Having opportunities to choose PD topics based on interest. If Ts are expected to #differentiateinstruction for Ss to address various #interests, then shouldn't PD's for T's be the same way? #NYEDChat
A3; seeing other schools facing similar issues. Last yr our admin team went to the bronx to see how a school w/ a high ESL population integrated support strategies to better serve this populatio.
#NYEDChat
Irony — the very profs who have arbitrary cell phone policies for their students often can be seen with their phones out during PD sessions, not paying one cent of attention to the presenter. #NYEDChat
A 3 For me, the only way transfer and change occur is there are several lead teachers and resource teachers who can follow up with coaching and learning responsive to teachers’ needs. #NYEDChat
PD must be inviting to all edus. It must show ideas that will spark others in the hands of teachers. Teacher voice is key to effecting lasting change. #NYEDChat
Sorry to say, but some Ts don't cooperate well in PDs. I often wish they weren't mandatory. Ts would be better involved if they wanted to be there. And some Ts just need time to think/plan/read/explore on their own. #nyedchat
More "Non-traditional PD" examples - Focused Voxer groups, asynchronous book studies, ParentCamp, EdCamp, Student EdCamp, EdCamp Leadership, Conferences (in person or virtually via #) visits to other schools, escape rooms, hackathons... #nyedchat
#nyedchat A3. We had a cohort working on cross-curricular collaboration. We were in it because we believed in it. When admin asked us to share at a school wide pro-D, 1 teacher emotionally sharing how much growth his students experienced, led to tripling our cohort the next year
Thank you for these incredible resources, @cybraryman1! I love the photo of the old @NYCSchools handles. I still see them in some schools I visit <3 #NYedchat

Q4: NYS educators are trying to develop global thinkers who possess skills for today’s world. How can professional development help us reach this goal? #NYEDChat
Nothing drives me nuts more than a group of teachers in a learning environment who don’t abide by the same rules that they’d punish their students for doing!
A3 I think visiting other teachers in practice/classrooms is the best professional learning available anywhere. Ts have so much to offer 1 another and visiting encourages reflection, conversation, collegiality, collaboration & all the best of professional communities. #NYEDChat
Thanks for jumping in Joe. It is always good to have your take on our topics. #NYEDChat Interdepartment or interschool visits are eye openers in cultures of trust.
I think the assimilation of these skills requires an honest assessment of our own possession of them! PD is a great place to identify what are strengths and weaknesses are in regards to these skills in a collaborative learning environment. #nyedchat
Q4: NYS educators are trying to develop global thinkers who possess skills for today’s world. How can professional development help us reach this goal? #NYEDChat
A.4 I think teachers can use information about new technology and new ways to approach teaching challenges. Many Ts don't have time to read/explore these on their own. But it's more about advice and info rather than telling what to do. #nyedchat
A4: #professionaldevelopment helps edus refine their skills and enhance their learning to create inquiry-based, stu-centered, active learning classrms with the Teachers as Learners model. #NYEDChat
Shout out to @EmilyPuccio! Yes, there are already so many experts IN OUR BUILDINGS! Let's create a culture of casual sharing and inter-visitation. When I struggled my first year I would go watch @Adam_Sarli and @adamfachler teach. They kept me grounded #NYedchat
In reply to
@EmilyPuccio, @EmilyPuccio, @Adam_Sarli, @adamfachler
#nyedchat We were driven by the big ideas & processes we shared in common so that we could have students see the overlap in the courses and to stop fragmenting their learning. Humanities style discussions were incorporated in science/math. Rubric use shared, topics etc.
It sounds like your cohort was driven by an outcome of a product or other tangible evidence of your collaboration. Having something ti work towards really cements the learning!
Often we do to ourselves what is often done to students — PD sessions that we’ve had no say in creating on topics that often do not interest us in order to earn PD credit just to meet some forgotten arbitrary requirement that some admin in some decade established. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat Q4 PD can help build global skills if it helps connect people from different schools and colleges and in different but related fields. It can help us think outside our routine.
#NYEDChat A4 Learn from other Ts and success they are having in their classes. At North White in Indiana, we have had two cultural conversations. One with a class in Argentina over gender inequality & one in Mexico over current issues. Our Ss learned new views outside the US.
A 4 It’s important for teachers to become global thinkers in order to support students. Ts can participate in global learning by forming & participating in global learning communities. #NYEDChat
All #PD sessions need to be on target with what will move teaching and learning. They must be engaging and not run by sages on the stage. Facilitators should be guides on the learning journey. #NYEDChat
Humanities Dept discussion are a great way to bring content area teachers together to learn how to connect ideas and effect change in learning. #NYEDChat Rubrics and reflective assessments are a must.
A4: In order to develop global thinkers in Ss, Ts need opportunities to do that type of thinking as well. Design #PD days around those goals. It's tough to teach a thinking skill if Ts do not think that way themselves. #NYEDChat
A4: Twitter helps connect educators and classrooms across the world. My kids collaborated with a school in Norway via @googledocs. The kids gave each other feedback and sent each other videos/selfies to develop community. #NYedchat
I like the idea of using tools that connect teachers/students with the global community...skype a scientist, classroom or high-tech company are some examples, and are how they are impacting the world and what skills/tools they use
A4 Suggestions on resources, methodolgies, collaborative protocols are very helpful in PD sessions. #Pd should never be about this is the way to do it. It should be here are a sampling of what might work. Choice counts. #NYEDChat
A5: Good PD should allows edus to walk away with at least one great idea, strategy, resource to bring back to the classroom or bldg/district. Teachers should be energized to try out the instructional move with Ss and then reflect upon the reactions. from the class. #NYEDChat
#nyedchat Even as basic as the use of 'conjecture/hypothesis' being made into one concept helped students grow. The discussions we shared as teachers on what drove our classes led to us seeing the commonalities & making adjustments to shepherd these connections for students.
Humanities Dept discussion are a great way to bring content area teachers together to learn how to connect ideas and effect change in learning. #NYEDChat Rubrics and reflective assessments are a must.
A5. I like it when I leave a PD with a specific step I want to take. In fact, sometimes I find myself starting it (on my laptop) during the PD! #nyedchat
Q4: NYS educators are trying to develop global thinkers who possess skills for today’s world. How can professional development help us reach this goal? #NYEDChat
A4 what a great collaboration Alex. I know that many tech-saavy teachers are using @googledocs to collaborative with each other and students to students. #NYEDChat
In reply to
@Alex_Corbitt, @googledocs, @googledocs
#NYEDChat Q4 I also think knowledge is expanding so fast, world wide, that PD can also provide opportunities for participants to teach other participants, like in these chats.
It’s impossible to assume that every teacher can implement every new strategy presented in PD. However, they should walk away with an increased network of peers whom they can reach out to for future learning and growth. #nyedchat
Perhaps the most important product of effective PD involves the advancement of informed, well-intentioned pedagogy. If we aren’t challenged to reflect on our teaching, on ways to connect the content to our students’ deep learning, then we’re wasting our time. #NYEDChat
A5: first sm that directly goes back into the classroom. Then networks/connections (which helps with follow ups). And ideally new attainable goals and a realistic path towards it. #nyedchat
A 5 Teachers should come away with a deeper understanding of the topic, inspired to risk trying a new practice, a desire to learn more and have conversations with colleagues to continue the learning. #NYEDChat
#nyedchat This jars me a bit. To me (& lesson study model) is to focus on learning <-- not the teaching. How students put information together, make sense, make connections etc is identical to how teachers need to do it. Without 'doing' & looking at ourselves doing, we don't grow
Taking risks is essential, @LRobbTeacher! We need to be comfortable with the messiness of change. Growth requires vulnerability and humility. The process begins at the edge of our comfort zone! #NYedchat
Q5 #NYEDChat Teachers should take away from PD an idea they want to try, or an event they want to attend, a book they want to read, a technology they want to try. They should also come away with a positive view toward future PD opportunities.
The PD programs I created brought not only teachers together from my district but teachers and admins from other districts. @ScholasticEd was a great partner in this #PD effort. @LRobbTeacher spoke at many events and learning was a great sharing experience. #NYEDChat
Good PD can occur anywhere at anytime. Convos in the hallway have given me great things to consider about teaching. More importantly, I’ve learned more from my Twitter PLN than from decades of traditional PD sessions! #NYEDChat
Exactly most feel it’s a waste of their precious time to get involved bc we’ve been through this farce all too often - and have heard “this time it’s different” way too many times. #nyedchat
Great teaching facilitates great learning (when it's done well). I love watching great teachers at work. The Teacher Channel has amazing videos. #nyedchat
#nyedchat A5: Questions and a will to explore them. A support network to debrief with & a sense of efficacy to effect changes that improve student learning.
We cannot afford to waste any edu's time. We must find ways to engage and have lasting change in #PD. It takes a lot of conferring prior to the #PD event to bring a fruitful program to a district or a region. #NYEDChat
I think your point, Ben, is also that a good PD has a limited scope. Not too much at once. But still something valuable for all comers. Tall order, but that's ok. #nyedchat
May I say that the participants and guest moderators at #NYEDChat are engaged in a really fabulous collegial discussion on the future of #PD. Thank you for collaborating together. #NYEDChat
#Reflaction: One step I can take 2 impact my practice is to continue to be part of active #PLN learning, online or offline? I will continue to engage in Twitter chats w worldwide colleagues and be a leader of #NYEDChat.
Well, yeah, but a good admin fuels the teachers, don't control them. The T's development should continue without them. In higher ed, we get managers who come in for 2-5 years, changes everything and leave. I'm pretty sick of that. But it's not stopping soon. #nyedchat
I am in total agreement with you, Joe. Now that I am continuing to deliver #PD I take it very seriously and know that we must reach all edus to make lasting change. #NYEDChat
You are right, @cruickbook. Fostering a healthy school culture, creating pedagogical alignment, and internalizing each others strongest practices takes years. We need to keep teachers and admin around as long as possible #NYedchat
#nyedchat Sometimes the cognitive dissonance I experience from something different to how I would approach something is enough to pose new questions, challenge my assumptions & to create new approaches & paradigms.
Reflection. Forge relationships with colleagues and have conversations about teaching and learning practices. Listen and support each other. Do this 2to3 Times a month. Make time; it feeds your learning soul! #NYEDChat
I'm really not sure I agree. I don't think admins are essential to the core. The Ts are. Admins are facilitators. And the good ones can do great work in a short time. But they have to let Ts take the lead. #nyedchat
I love your last line, Laura. We all need to feed our learning soul with engaging and long-lasting PD that makes a difference in students' learning lives. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat Sometimes just having teachers have time to share with each other their best teaching moment--that can be powerful. Peer-to-peer discussions of teaching, and the time to have those discussions. If pizza is involved, all the better.
It's a sad thought that in some buildings Ts and Admins have 'sides'. Isn't everyone there to support Ss and their growth? If Ts and Admins are there for a common goal - doing what is best for children, how can there be sides? #NYEDChat
I think that I learn from my colleagues and I give some ideas that have worked in the past. Twitter allows me to interact with edus and colleagues around th e world. It is good to hear from the business world and other roles to see different perspectives. #NYEDChat

I think I see what you're saying, @Klind2013. Some admins can hinder collaboration and sharing. But a great admin can allow innovation to flourish. I don't know where I would be without my incredible principal, @seraphacruz. I'd be spinning in circles without her! #NYedchat

@Klind2013 has a great mind and wit so I always love interacting with him. I worked with @Alex_Corbitt & @finleyt this summer on a panel Ken invited us to and we had a wonderful time engaging with pre-service teachers. I hope they took away some positive ideas #NYEDChat

#nyedchat Understanding each other's pedagogical paradigm helps understanding. Acquisition or participatory learning? Teaching or learning? etc. I co-planned a lesson with a stud. teacher. She then implemented something totally different to what I thought we planned
I'm really not sure I agree. I don't think admins are essential to the core. The Ts are. Admins are facilitators. And the good ones can do great work in a short time. But they have to let Ts take the lead. #nyedchat
Thanks to Alex Corbitt, Todd Finley, and Ken Lindblom for a stimulating conversation tonight. Ken was also quite handsome, though you can’t see him on Twitter. #NYEDChat
The new leader is one that is willing to work alongside staff to build bridges and cultures of trust, to effect change, and listen to solutions to nagging issues. We need all the thinking forward edus to come together in Twitter chats so tell your colleeagues. #NYEDChat

Oh no, is it 9pm already?? Tonight's #NYedchat flew by so quickly! I have so many new ideas to chew on. Thank you to everyone who contributed! #NYedchat
#nyedchat Really quick hour when you start 25 min late! Thanks everyone for making me look deeper into PD & how it parallels learning in my classrooms. Teachers as students (& vice versus) hmmm??
Many thanks to all of you for your consistent efforts to bring this topic to the public. The Future of #PD is important as we power up our teaching and student learning. #gratitude#NYEDChat
