Welcome! Nice to meet you!
I'm Katie. I'm from Sparta NJ and I'm a SpEd MS ELA teacher. I'll be posting the first question shortly!
Thanks again everyone for being here this morning!
Q1: What do you think are the qualities of a 21st century learner?
A1 divergent & lateral thinking, decision maker, critical consumer & authentic creator
Jess, Teacher Librarian, Alliston, Ontario, Canada
Good morning! My name is Audrey House and I teach 2nd grade at Monroe ES, Enid OK
21st cent learners are collaborative, think critically, and have an understanding of the world around them
Hi Jess! Excited to have you here!
A1: 21st cent learners are collaborative, think critically, and have an understanding of the world around them
21st century learner can use multiple areas to solve a problem, STEAM, and not always with only tech
Great definition! I definitely agree that divergent and lateral thinking are very important! https://t.co/BXY266zsn3
A1 divergent & lateral thinking, decision maker, critical consumer & authentic creator
Hi, edcampers! I'm Brian. I teach MS Ss Eng in CO. As for A1, I'd ♥ to subtract 21st cent bit from this phrase. Learners=learners
Yeah! Super hard to get middle shcoolers to make that leap, but when they do, WOW!
I like that definition! Always important that 21st century skills move beyond just the use of tech
A1 Qualities of a 21st Century learner: creative, collaborative, problem-solving thinkers
Hi Brian! Welcome! And very good point for Q1!
Collaboration is a must. I wonder how well we T model that when we're stuck in silos, er classrooms?
I'm currently listening to this audiobook: Originals by Adam Grant. Lots to say re: creative thinking
Love the visual It's important to get the skills working together to really build a 21st cent learner! https://t.co/r2N21sldfI
Just looked him up-- another for the reading list!
Branching off all of these great ideas:
Q2: How can we use GAFE tools to increase collaboration and increase team building?
These are awesome! Definitely have to check these out
A2 jigsaw pattern of learning and sharing, use to share ideas, create quality products which show understanding
A2: Use Docs & Slides and have Ss work together to create a final product as a whole group
Alright! Love TED talks. and nice to have a sampler first before buying :-D
Yes! Thanks for sharing! Definitely will have to check that out
A2. Docs and Slides are my favorites for mine to use themselves. I use Forms too and want them to create their own this year
A2: I've also had Ss collaborate on Google Drawings & left it on the board as almost like a virtual whiteboard for them
Oof, on and on .
Hard to keep the two convos seperate! LOVE
Having them create their own Forms is really effective! Especially creating them for each other!
Esp. if doing anything with statistics. Provides easy way to gather info from diff communities!
Good Morning, Maristella and I teach Kindergarten in Oxnard, CA
I'm Jan, a Grade 5&6 Teacher Librarian in PA. A1: Great watchers of YouTube to learn! https://t.co/65FNBQ6vTe
Thanks again everyone for being here this morning!
Q1: What do you think are the qualities of a 21st century learner?
Welcome Jan! & I love the idea of incorporating YouTube into learning! Such a beneficial tool!
A2 I like to use Google classroom for class collaboration chats and/or google docs for planning and brainstorming
Q3: How can we use GAFE tools to build a climate of inquiry and curiosity in the classroom?
A3 use hyperdocs to launch questions, but always pointing towards open-ended or unknown outcome
()
Classroom is a great resource for collaboration! I've had Ss use it as a platform to share resources and research
A2: lends itself to collaboration and better organization. In old days we used wikis! https://t.co/6ZgVka8Mz9
Branching off all of these great ideas:
Q2: How can we use GAFE tools to increase collaboration and increase team building?
A2) Students can curate and create together in "real time," exploring dynamics of synthesis of multiple contributions.
A2: Google Forms is a gr8 way for Ss to keep track of success criteria during a project.
A3: Ss share interesting resources using Forms and allowed them access to the Sheet to see what their peers were researching
Love it! Never thought of as jigsaw but you are so right! Encourages reading! https://t.co/EDxcUXT40W
A2 jigsaw pattern of learning and sharing, use to share ideas, create quality products which show understanding
Very true! It's so easy to share and work together in an online format now
A3 2-edged sword: GAFE tools bake Research option into Tools menu to quench curiosity. Ease makes citing, trusting sources tricky
A3: Just learned more about the Google a Day challenge and I feel like that would be a great way to pique Ss curiosity each day
A3: Group students with similar likes & give each group a task! provides the platform! https://t.co/CBtX2VqR66
Q3: How can we use GAFE tools to build a climate of inquiry and curiosity in the classroom?
A3: Google Research tool & Google Street View expand access to information and places that may otherwise be inaccessible to Ss.
this looks incredible! Can you tell us more? Do you make notes in the form?
This is a GREAT resource! Definitely good for the students to self-assess their own working ability, too https://t.co/KIN3QzPd5I
That's a good point. I've had Ss use both good and bad resources that way. But made for a good teachable moment!
Have seen MS Ss turn all Lord of Flies in shared files. Set/revisit norms; problem solve communally
Can you give a summary of Google a Day challenge?
A3b) The new Q&A in Google Slides presentation mode also encourages inquiry, even during a presentation.
Yes, I cant wait to use that function!
Q4: How can we use GAFE tools (like Classroom) to encourage self-paced and self-directed learning?
The very reason I love the revision history feature! Can see who is doing what!
I love that feature! Ss love it too! Makes some of my Ss feel more comfortable asking questions & in discussions
A4 allows ss to both work at own pace, but also keep tabs with each other through questions and team asn. Facilitates work flow
The Draftback extension works well, too! Catches every key Ss hit on keyboard while working
ooooh! Nice! Will check out that ext.
A4) Set up multiple Google classrooms suited to the needs of specific groups of learners, and provide choice in resources.
Love Google Research tool. Love that it cites for students to keep them honest! https://t.co/K485eZqaiO
A3: Google Research tool & Google Street View expand access to information and places that may otherwise be inaccessible to Ss.
A4: On Classroom provide multiple resources for practice but let Ss decide how much practice they need before proving mastery
Using street view is great! Really engages the Ss and brings them places they couldn't visit normally
I've done that in my ICS classes so classified Ss would have access to different resources they needed. Works great!
I love how incorporates Street View into an inquiry-based model w/ points earned.
Yes, great tools. To maximize impact, I learned I had to share doc w/Individual Ss, not anyone w/link
That's a good idea! Engaging and provides a game-like feel!
A4 Set the goals/targets in Google Classroom have students create in apps like Seesaw
Students love that! Also gets them working on inferencing skills to help them figure out the answer
A4: Using Classroom I give students who need it more time& provide video & other readings. https://t.co/vAS1ZLMbXu
Q4: How can we use GAFE tools (like Classroom) to encourage self-paced and self-directed learning?
I hate moving on when there are so many great ideas!
Q5: How can GAFE bring cultural awareness/global connections to classes?
Love it! I have to use that! https://t.co/xxMl374tQj
The Draftback extension works well, too! Catches every key Ss hit on keyboard while working
A4 Mentioned earlier, but relevant here: Hyperdocs can be responsive to self-paced, self-directed learning. Likewise, GForms.
Then they get to choose their own method of creation and showing their skill/goal. Love it! Gives them a choice
A5: Encourage Ss to use Google Cultural Institute to explore other countries and their history & culture
Hyperdocs are definitely useful in increasing multiple 21st cent skills. Just a great tool to use in class!
A5) I love how Google Hangouts can bridge geographical gaps after making connections on Twitter.
Agree, I did anyone w/link one time! Never again! Give each S/group a copy worked best!
I hope to dig in to Hyperdocs this year.
Bingo: https://t.co/S5iU39ZCYS Rich! Begging next Q: How to use to cultivate awareness & connections? https://t.co/VsYtfxjchw
A5: Encourage Ss to use Google Cultural Institute to explore other countries and their history & culture
That's definitely a good way to connect! Ss can even work as virtual pen pals through a shared Doc
A5: Google Trends, You can start your class with current events.
They just expanded the app version of this to offer 360 and VR experiences of different destinations
I should try that! Great way to engage students!
Q6: How can we use GAFE to increase creativity?
A6a design projects w s choice in mind. Give them some control over what product will be, once they are familiar with
a6b . Teach design process thinking to enable creativity
Choice is crucial for creation. Allows for freedom to make their own creative decisions and embrace own ideas
A6: Any apps that save to Drive can allow for creation and then uploading to Classroom to share (ex: Canva, Powtoon)
Right! Crucial to un-school some ss so they uncover their native curiousity.
how do you use current events to start class? what do you use? https://t.co/iOrK1gd8wj
A5: Google Trends, You can start your class with current events.
Another for your list, if not yet checked off: Launch by John Spencer & A.J. Juliani, on design thinking
Just read . Working on integrating it into units this fall!
A6: Allow Ss and Ts to explore beyond GAFE and to integrate GAFE tools to bring forth new meaning/interactivity venues.
Sorry I am heading out for the day. I will check in later! Thx for hosting!
That also brings in some critical thinking by allowing them to see how other products/apps can connect together
Thanks, I have to look more into hyperdocs myself!
In Kinder so we can start with a current event to discus. I also flip my classroom and have SS bring info from home.
Last one!
Q7: How can we use Google to teach students to think critically about what they see online?
Thanks for participating! :)
A7a by manipulating search strings, find different results. Discuss bias, agendas, compare/contrast topics from diff sources.
a7b No longer bound by what is immediately available
Flipping current events! Great ideas https://t.co/bpddOrQuUr
In Kinder so we can start with a current event to discus. I also flip my classroom and have SS bring info from home.
A7: Analyze multiple articles on the same topic and compare and contrast provided information using Google News
Thanks so much for Moderating! Great conversations and connections!
Thank you to everyone who shared ideas! You are all awesome! I'll be posting the archive of this later!
Thanks for participating and sharing awesome ideas! Enjoy the rest of your day!
Love it!!! Flipping Current Events!!! https://t.co/hDgB0hqPG9
In Kinder so we can start with a current event to discus. I also flip my classroom and have SS bring info from home.
Too many tabs open to check out, and there is another chat I want to go to yet! Ack!
Love it! Author purpose and bias in one current event!!! https://t.co/E3tN8U0FP0
A7: Analyze multiple articles on the same topic and compare and contrast provided information using Google News
That'll be a lesson with Ss!
