Topic: Would it be beneficial to trade a small amnt of tchng time for kids to accumulate some collaborative planning time for tchrs?
I think the idea that teachers need to be present for learning to take place is a huge barrier for education.
For the next hour my tweets will be dedicated to ! https://t.co/o6D4TPVP5m
Topic: Would it be beneficial to trade a small amnt of tchng time for kids to accumulate some collaborative planning time for tchrs?
Checking in to see what's going on! Chat happening ? Or no?
NOW — Would it be beneficial to trade a small amount of teaching time to accumulate collaborative planning time for teachers?
Yes. Also just read a post from learning forward that teachers should spend at least 25% of their time on PD https://t.co/efGEjj0SGS
WELCOME — Would it be beneficial to trade a small amount of teaching time to accumulate collaborative planning time for teachers?
how much of the time you are with students are they working independently? Could that time be used?
A1: Teacher collaboration, especially within a kind of structure can be the best PD for teachers and also benefit students greatly.
A: ABSOLUTELY. Teachers do not have enough time - if any - to plan together.
Now join — Would it be beneficial to trade a small amount of teaching time to accumulate collaborative planning time for teachers?
Common collaborative planning benefits Ss outcomes and boosts Ts morale.
Surely it is possible to shave off time from instructional time over a week to create a block of time for teachers to collaborate.
Looking forward to a school year filled with opportunities for learning.
our teachers collaboratively plan once a week during their lesson planning time. No student time is lost.
There are definitely creative ways to restructure schedules.

A way to improve the profession of education would be to structure professional development & collaboration into the work week.
It's ! Please share any teacher or parent friendly articles you've written on tech, resources, etc. I'll RT!
Absolutely! In nonprofit and collaboration is taking hold to allow us to better serve our communities.
A1- we set aside time before school each morning for p/d, fac mtgs, etc; we need to use this time more for these purposes!
IN PROGRESS — Would it be beneficial to trade small amount of teaching time to accumulate collaborative planning time for teachers?
Early dismissal once a week for PD/common time would be amazing. I've seen school success with that model
A. Absolutely! Would generate way more productivity if a little more time was spent planning
Collaboration for the sake of collaboration isn't the answer. Determine and agree upon the purposes for collaboration and outcomes.
Meaning team up to solve common problems while working together to meet goals, especially in fundraising.

COLLABORATION among teachers is the cornerstone for strengthening instruction. Must make, give, create…what ever it takes… time.
I agree! But not creating the opportunity to collaborate in the first place is a huge barrier
If we, as educators, are not learning from and with each other - who are we leaving our future growth to? We must own our progress
When a teacher works with another teacher during an evening, after school, or on a weekend — IS THAT COLLABORATION? I think not.
Before we take away from class time, why don't we use faculty meetings for this purpose?
I agree but it needs to be for a reason. Otherwise "others" will look in and ask why you "aren't working."
If effective, supportive, respectful, PD for adult learners was a priority in edu, many of education's problems could be addressed
That could be a great solution. Where I am meetings aren't long enough to foster this.
administrators need to realize that a little time goes along way! https://t.co/36RvK20PVT
COLLABORATION among teachers is the cornerstone for strengthening instruction. Must make, give, create…what ever it takes… time.
Clear objectives and admin that models quality collaboration can help keep focus.
Collaboration is not about the when and where, but rather what is collectively created as a result.
Teachers should feel a responsibility to share what they have learned in their classroom with their colleagues.
We talk about class time as though every minute is being used well. I don't think that's true. Has your school done a time audit?

HIGH QUALITY COLLABORATION BETWEEN TEACHERS is not a spontaneous occurrence. What conditions are necessary?
We are given enough time to collaborate, just no direction
Collaboration enables every participant to bring their Life & Professional experience to address solutions to problems.
Interdisciplinary collaborative planning time leads to reinforcing student learning & more strategic teaching-it's worth the time
define used well? and good luck getting everybody to agree on what that means ;)
One of the first points of discussion at the collaborative meetings - What can/should Ss be doing while we are here?
Time, admin support, clear objectives, curriculum resources, edtech support if needed.
The one thing every teacher wants but seldom gets - TIME TO COLLABORATE. An alterable circumstance, correct?
Unfortunately, has created a culture of using their free-time for collaboration and .
And student input would be AWESOME!
And yet so many teachers don't. They live in their silos and guard their "property"
The opposite problem of mine! Both time and direction are so important.
I’m curious… IF YOU TEACH, what percent of your day involves ‘serious’ collaboration with another teacher about instruction?
WHEN A TEACHER collaborates with another teacher about teaching, the teaching of both teachers improves.
I believe that is premise of topic. Ss aren't left alone while we collaborate, they're learning. So time is valuable.
Culture also needs to promote trust instead of competition between Ts.
The collaboration of educators is key in student success.
Which type of homework has biggest impact on student achievement? "Preparation for future learning." Via
Is a one hour pep rally more important than T collaboration time? Just one question to get the flow going
HIGH QUALITY COLLABORATION between teachers requires more than time… what else needed?
Why should collaboration be limited to school hours? Please elaborate.
Nobody knows the Ss in your building better than your colleagues. It's so important to leave the silo.
So you are giving up your teaching time, but they are being taught by others. This is best use of flexible scheduling.
pep rallies are so important for the school community, so hard on teachers whose prep they replace.
0% specific, dedicated time is given to us, but we always made informal collaboration happen.
Collaboration led to amazing learning experiences for students which benefitted the whole school community! https://t.co/Kpg7rQc3bW

What's your favorite app/program/website for teaching digital literacy (safety, website eval, research) or computer programming?
A. I actually teach and probably 30 minutes a day is spent on true collaboration. That is probably more than most.
Interested to see how the new learning communities that are being implemented for teachers will work.
Don't get me wrong. I was a band director before becoming a principal. Still, prioritize your time.
It requires desire too! It requires the motivation to put in the time!
Is that because they are assessed/evaluated as a solo artist and not as part of a team? Just asking!
the problem with that is everybody has a different opinion about what needs priority.
As does the learning for all students! https://t.co/tphUNuzUe9
WHEN A TEACHER collaborates with another teacher about teaching, the teaching of both teachers improves.
NOT all collaborations between teachers are equal—or equally productive… what collaborations are most powerful? Why?
WHAT are the specific conditions that make high quality collaboration between teachers and high levels of student learning POSSIBLE.
It also requires colleagues with a like-mind and who are qualified and possess the passion to contribute!
Investment , preparedness, student centered focus
Telling Ts to "go collaborate" is like telling me to "go innovate." What is the purpose and the desired outcomes? Structure?
equal importance to all parts of teh community, or it isn't really a community IMO
Trust, comfort level with each other, using everyone's strengths leads to power collaboration
Then the school doesn't have a clear and accepted primary mission. What is it we are really about.
Need to have an agenda of things to discuss otherwise conversation can get off topic.
Or it can lead to "The blind leading the blind" if there are no clear goals or an agenda.
If collaboration & planning time for tchrs will make them more efficient & effective, shaving instructional time should be no prob.
No argument, but time is a fixed commodity. If they stay what has to go? Valid question to ask all.
"The blind leading the blind."
*Admins must demand time teachers MUST have to plan & plan collaboratively.
Stop controlling tchrs - let'm Teach!
agreed! Agendas are key...I like a moderator too that keeps us on topic!
Help me here… who opposes teachers collaboration? Why?
Sure! I think it's more about finding balance than cutting
that goes without saying, or it does but some don't agree. School is complicated
breakdown the departmental offices-
High quality teacher collaboration needs a shared vision for teaching/learning with short & long term steps/goals for reaching it
Being present; active listeners, looking at student work together
I think having outside PD may be outdated. Ts don't need training. They need time and commitment. All we need is available.
As a P I tried to get all to filter initiatives through the filter of "will this move us closer to mission?"
For years, it was much more difficult to share bc of the isolated classroom.
SM changes that.
Collaboration is powerful. But it should not be scripted. It takes committed professionals w/ big dreams. Can be amazing if organic.
Without direction, purpose and commitment, it becomes just another meeting without an impact on Ss.
The best collaboration occurs when educators initiate sharing & are open to the process to benefit students https://t.co/vtlHXIeLjF
that is an important part of your role. As a teacher I tend to be more focused on student than mission though.
You could substitute the word "tech" in there for the same reasons.
Why would anyone oppose teacher-teacher collaboration? and I think hypothetical opposers are insecure.
WHAT CONDITIONS enable high quality collaboration between teachers?
Building and maintaining relationships among Ts, but also among Ss - the collaborative decisions impact them as well
As a T you need to know, agree with, and embrace the mission. Otherwise there is no mission.
NO COLLABORATION…regardless of form, time, or purpose IS EVER WASTED.
Great norms for productive T collaboration sessions! Add planning to take data/research based action
He outlined it & students painted it it was a terrific learning experience w/ a professional artist!
If the public thinks we need better teachers, why are we not prioritizing effective PD to educate the educators we have?
IF IT’S TIME TO GET SERIOUS about teacher collaborate then acknowledging the important role collaboration is a good first step.
is excited to attend 2016 Educator Summit in Phoenix next week! Stop by our booth and say hi!
Very beneficial but perhaps too expensive for most schools?
A. Having the resources you need (tech, etc...) is vital. Implementing good ideas can't happen without tools.
Then you have a group of independent contractors working with students in a shared space.
WHEN TEACHERS co-exist, students suffer. Create conditions that foster co-evolution among teachers… and with students.
If the public thinks we need better teachers, also prioritize educating public on great teachers we have :) https://t.co/dBeQXCseD2
If the public thinks we need better teachers, why are we not prioritizing effective PD to educate the educators we have?
...getting lost in this convo with so much other stuff coming into the tag...Any way to remove that? Feel like I'm not chatting!
Ask teachers what needs to be done - act on it. Great point!@JohnKingatED
yes... it's a nuisance...
Would love to see As and Ts created a shared vision of collaboration together. Then As asks Ts what they need to make it happen!
SUPPORTIVE professional environments help teachers improve and students learn and achieve… so, why not commonplace?
High quality is on the school but ourselves too; PD is important, but we have to make sure qualified ppl are being hired
We all want things to change. How many are willing to change?
Great policy insights from and national perspectives on education.
yes... can be huge difference makers ->
if traditional ed structure reinforces Ts in silos, then shouldn’t we change system so that co-evolution is req’d?
oh, so important. Start there, and grow ->

WHAT CONDITIONS enable high quality collaboration between teachers?
It's vital to recognise & reward characteristics as well as academic ability in ALL young people.
https://t.co/SO8CI74Fhw
Great schools from my observation are all pulling in the same direction in a collaborative way.
Yes Melanie, so important... but often rare. Why?
good point... thanks Tom ->
Yikes...not another meeting!
Multiple agendas, focuses, and too much on everyone's plate.
auto generated? Spontaneous? Will that be enough? Or something else?
Collaboration through conversation is the best way that adults learn. If time is a reason it is not being prioritized, create it.
I completely agree. I think that Ts should be rewarded for collaborating to encourage them
Makes so much sense... Have you tried? What effect?
Bingo... how to get there? What'll it take?
I contend that we do have great teachers. We could all be amazing teachers through .
Good point Howard... what'd be a better approach?
Yes! middle school- fostered collaboration and sharing- also built relationships amg Tcrs
yes...that makes a difference. What else?
As have to help support/encourage strengths, positive school culture, peer observations/reflections, modeling, time
Collaboration important for teachers & admin but don't leave out My What Students Want page https://t.co/uSsCaEmEtP
wow! That's good stuff...
Still getting lost with the other posts coming in. Can I do anything about it?
Strong support from admins is a must!
Excellent point! Direction is key! https://t.co/btdQNiXHE1
Telling Ts to "go collaborate" is like telling me to "go innovate." What is the purpose and the desired outcomes? Structure?
It's hard to get all of that, but at least some of those conditions would help improve. Shared vision too!
As a ms P the staff agreed on and journaled different things to work on each day of the week during team time.
nice... what frequency? What focus?
We need to change the culture of how view other teachers, in and out of the classroom.
CA eliminated the CAHSEE; MD adds mandatory coursework for "college readiness." One size fits all? https://t.co/52Jm3EjGOS
cool... what effect on learning? Instruction?
we release our students @ 2 every Thursday. Teachers collaborate within departments or grade levels for at least an hour
They documented discussions, agreements, actions to take, and result of previous actions. Also appeased the bean counters
All we want is to do what's best for kids and teach!
Educators, what are you reading this summer?
I know our SPED department really utilizes this time to discuss acc/mod and implementation into each classroom setting!

perhaps non-supportive pro. environments stem from a lack of compassion and open-mindedness (think Carol Dweck)
Thanks Rommel... makes sense to me.
I've recently suggested to a school that they abandon weekly administrative meetings and collaboratively plan instead

nice... how was it received? What next?
big question, I don’t have the answer, but teachers unpacking what collaboration means may be a good start? https://t.co/KDz8IieWlP
