The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
I started seeing districts nearby calling delays and I got hopeful. Ah well. My daughters district has a second day off today (scheduled, not a cancellation). Creating some child care issues, but we figured it out #bfc530
Some educators are better managers than leaders. How do teachers evolve as leaders without stepping on the toes of the managers?

I spent a winter in Minnesota about 20 years ago. Gave me a new perspective of winter and what can be done despite driving on top of packed snow on tertiary roads. #bfc530
good morning #bfc530 we have a "cold delay" in FCPS today. Not something we ever had growing up in Buffalo, but I've gotten soft in my old age. It's cold out there!
Places that get snow all the time know how to deal with it, work around it, and go out an play in it. People in the DC area on the other hand, seem to fear it, panic, and wait for it to melt. #bfc530
I'm never here for #bfc530 as this is the time I am usually getting ready to head to #Room407. Two Hour Delay means I can have a moment to grow in community again after a long absence. Thank you for always stretching the thinking in regard to our practice as classroom teachers.
Good morning! I think being a good leader takes recognizing and providing what people need to be success. If that’s managing things, then helping them not to over manage and to use those skills to help others be successful. #bfc530
I think it is important to stay in our lane ... leading in the idea department is not the same as decision making for the school ... we might be a leader but we are not a decision maker ... that is a different lane #bfc530
I tend to see managers as either being good at managing up (in the case if schools - to admin, school committee...) or managing down (students, colleagues...) #bfc530

I guess I need clarification of the ?. Are we saying some people can lead ppl better & others better organizers or are we saying some ppl are more lead by seeing the power in risk taking while others see the power in routine & stability? #bfc530

Good morning #bfc530 A little icy Maine morning to you! I think working on a culture where many strengths are honored and leveraged can give room for everyone to add to the benefit of the group.

Considering how we might increase student engagement through collaboration (and making allowances for its innate social nature), we can see clearly the difference between leading the lesson/learning and managing the work in now in progress. Adults need this sometimes too. #bfc530
Good morning #BFC530. Soooo cold this morning. Not looking forward to stepping outside but got to do it. Have a good day and stay warm if you are in the East coast or any other coast for that matter.

When you work with admin. who believe in their staff and who also believe in distributive/shared leadership, teachers feel far more empowered to truly embrace various forms of leadership...within and outside of the classroom. #bfc530

I normally recognize a problem that we can improve on and attempt to bring it up to the staff through email or during a meeting. Recently it was perceived as me telling the staff that they can't teach and I was sent to the liason committee to be reprimanded. #bfc530

I never really thought of managers in education. That makes me think of some teachers telling others what to do. Need to think on this more, but for now I can only come up with examples of teacher leaders - who lead by example. #bfc530
A: by taking leadership roles throughout the school. There is plenty of need for school leadership outside the classroom. Teacher leaders shape the plans and policies of the school, teacher managers enforce the plans and policies. #bfc530

I’m sorry that happened. I wonder how a “reprimand” is supposed to help with communication issues? Seems like a terrible way to try to fix a misunderstanding. #bfc530
I think teachers who become leaders do so by starting something—it could be anything—letting others see their vision, & then those who see what’s going on join in. The managers might join or not. #BFC530
It works together. Teamed up w/the science teacher to create an interdisciplinary culture/biome zoo project. I saw the big picture and what the end result could be, she was able to create the plan to get the Ss there. (although she was a great leader too) #bfc530

Interesting Q! There is a world of difference between exhibiting #leadership traits and the exercise of leadership. Education is derived from the Latin-Educaré meaning to lead out of or draw out of. A true educator is a leader, it’s what they do. #bfc530
That sucks ... teachers are very temperamental people when it comes to our craft. It is easy to blame Admin here but in reality it was probably other teachers who went to Admin to complain. #bfc530 wear the reprimand as a badge of honor.
Recognizing that our new faculty members are closer in proximity to the new teacher training then we are could help us to see better their leadership potential in certain areas. Just like that, I have been out of education classes for a decade and a half. Listen to them. #bfc530
Ask for forgiveness, not permission. Own your risks and take them anyway. For me, in the current climate and culture of my workplace, this has been the only way to make progress. #bfc530

I can see this much more clearly with administrators than with teachers. There are many effective managers of schools and systems, but fewer leaders who inspire. Is it the same dynamic in classrooms? Maybe. #bfc530

Good morning from Chelsea QC 🇨🇦 Getting the woodstove roaring again this morning by the light of the full moon... Love the shadows it casts across the snow! But ready for some warmer weather. #BFC530
To be fair, I was pretty blunt about the issue, but my point was that I was looking for input from the staff on different ideas that we could present the materials in the future to get better results. I believe more recognized it as problem solving than finger pointing. #bfc530
That's *an* example of what the Q meant to address. Sounds like you stepped on either staff and/or admin toes. We need genuine leaders, and they come from within the ranks. So, how do we lead when we face backlash from those who don't understand it or are territorial? #bfc530
I hear you, Paul! As my family has grown (including our rescue dog!) mornings have gotten busier, and I haven't been able to join in the chat as much. Always great to stop in and see old friends when time allows it! #BFC530
Sorry to hear that. Hate when a colleague goes "over your head" rather than talk it out with you. Im sure they dont like it when a parent goes to administration 1st before contacting them about a class issue #bfc530
Thx for clarifying the question Karl. For me, suggesting interdisciplinary projects are tricky b/c ppl see it as taking time from "their" curriculum or an attack on their practice. I have learned to just approach ppl who I believe would truly be willing to consider it #bfc530
I've been able to find a balance with this. Finding students who are my "early adopters" and piloting new ventures/titles/practices with them gives me the data I need to support my case for new practices. I pilot new projects or ideas every spring with small groups. #BFC530
We go around ... if you see a deficiency ... create an opportunity for someone to learn without pointing out the deficiency. Lack of tech ... create an after school tech PD. Most teachers want to learn but don’t like being told they’re not good enough. #bfc530
I think that's where it starts - identifying like-minded people & drawing them into a dynamic change or growth opportunity. Then letting the ripple effect do its thing through other staff. Leadership is doing, not demanding. Sometimes that's a tougher reach as a teacher. #bfc530
Was your statement made in an email? Often times the tone can be mistaken when reading the words. I'm sorry it happened. I know how deadly that "reprimand" meeting can be. *hugs* #bfc530
I love that "badge of honor" idea. I am one. And yes, I do. Sometimes we need to stick up for what we believe to stay true to ourselves. (Right, Dennis?) #bfc530
It was actually both. The email was a follow up point regarding a presentation that I did during our vertical planning curriculum meeting. Since my grade is at the end of our school's journey, I was asked to share what I see as students arrive for my math curriculum. #bfc530
Soooo.... honesty is not a virtue? Good to know. lol Maybe we need to have a badge, kind of like the boy scouts. It certainly is a rite of passage of sorts, saying we're angry, and not gonna take it anymore. *wink* #bfc530
I am in a far better place with @JSAPrincipal ... although responding to the interview question “why did you leave your previous school” question was tough #bfc530

Probably the best feeling in the world was as I was being escorted off campus through the quad all the kids were at the classroom windows cheering ... and they did this hashtag #dilltaughtme which trended world wide ... do the right thing for your kids.#bfc530

There is a fine line between honesty and politically correct ... if you ask me a question and tell me to be honest I will give you an honest answer ... I stand by my assessment ... 2/3 of the Admin were re-assigned. In hindsight ... I had to go for the sake of leadership #bfc530

#bfc530 I think the key is never stop attending PD. Here in MA, there are free Saturday edcamps once a month or so. If teachers want to grow and lead, getting ideas from outside the district is critical.
Yes I went from being in a toxic district & ready to leave the profession I worked so hard to get into🙁 to 2 years later being teacher of the year in the most amazing & supportive school ever. #bfc530 got me through the last months of the toxicity, best support system ever!

Great q. I definitely agree with keeping up with PD. I love it when leaders take an interest in what I’m doing whether it’s a book I’m reading or course I’m taking. #bfc530
