I am Janet Avery, Curriculum Director from Jerome, and your moderator this evening. Please take a moment and introduce yourself to the #IDedchat PLN - even if you are just lurking. :-)
Tonight we are going to chat about some of the possible topics to be covered at #IETA19 ... and what you hope to learn while there (wether you are near or far...you know there will be tweets). #IDedchat :-)
A1: I would want to talk to @thomascmurray about how to implement personalized learning in a manageable way. I am hoping there are tips to help prevent it from being overwhelming. #IDedchat
R1: we have an emphasis on being future ready. The problem is our students aren’t now ready, let alone future ready. How do we close the instructional gap to ensure our students are ready for careers and educational pathways coming in the future? #IDedchat
Tom is a great resource and someone I encourage you to speak with face to face. He's the real deal and what's every school, educator, and student to be better every day. #idedchat
Boo. And you get to make up the days also... we are supposed to get snow tomorrow night. 1-3”. Crazy weather. Can’t tell me we aren’t going through climate change. #IDedchat
My knowledge of future ready is preparing students for the next phase. Whether it is going off to the real world, or to college, making sure they are ready to take that leap. #idedchat
R1: technology is dramatically changing. I try to ride the front of the wave with this and prepare my Ss with skills needed to be ahead. I feel like because of the changes occurring so rapidly, we aren’t getting good with anything; just scratching the surface. #IDedchat
A1: I would ask @thomascmurray if he thought the coffee was over or under extracted. I'd ask him what his coffee preferences were, and if he loved pulling espresso as much as I do. #idedchat#IETA19@IdahoEdTech
A2: A couple of reasons for that theme for #IETA19. With edu and #edtech, it's important to think big, and take risks--that's how learning happens. That's what #Swing4thefences embodies #IDedchat
Great question Jay! #IDedchat I think part of that is forming relationships so we know where they are - meet them there and show them where they can go. #IDedchat
I’ve often felt that we need to be now ready before we can be future ready. Skills like 4Cs are things that help with now and future. The other thing I see currently are multiple directions schools are pulled in. Are we really getting a firm grasp on anything? #IDedchat
Or what do we do with the students that are identified that ARE ready, but still have to go through the steps to graduation? How can we challenge them more? #idedchat
A2: Also, we did a Twitter poll a few years ago, and that was one of the ideas. A few big ⚾ fans on the board, and we can't wait for all of your to see the theme in play #IDedchat#IETA19
These are my thoughts and mine alone. There are multiple initiatives. We are to use tech, practice with Marzano strategies, utilize 4Cs. + maker space concepts. + AP tests, WIDA (for ENL pop), state testing. Where does the time and focus go? We are not focused. #IDedchat
I'm sure we can. But from a scheduling standpoint it might be tough to have that many "sections" but could individualize it within that classroom. #idedchat
We actually have some of our 6th-8th graders doing personalized learning in their LA classes. They are in the classrooms for instruction but have alternate assignments. #idedchat
I like that you used "critically" in your question. Many students "use" technology. They consume all the time - how can we get them to critically think about the content and then use the information to create something new. #IDedchat
Indiana is starting career pathways for graduation requirements with our current 8th graders. This is going to make the focus even more diluted. Multiple pathways for Ss to meet graduation requirements. I believe there are 5 different ways this happens. #IDedchat
Q3: There will be many things "presented" at #IETA19 - those of you who have attended conferences - how do you take in, digest, and then implement things you learn? #IDedchat
So what do WE do to be intentional without losing focus on the fence? What do we do without experiencing burnout. A teacher friend and I were talking. We love the kids and the people we work with. We don’t like the hoops to jump through. #IDedchat
A3 I take notes using the hashtag on Twitter so I can go back and see what I learned and what others are learning. I also use Google Keep to organize the most important ideas. #idedchat
A3: This is the first time in a long, long time I haven't been presenting #IETA19. I don't even plan to attend every single session. My goal is to connect, reflect, connect. However I see fit. Looking forward to relaxing a bit this time around. Will present at #NCCE19#idedchat
A3 Absolutely love to debrief with folks between sessions. Talking & brainstorming is a great way to "team think" about how we can use what we learned for the benefit of teachers and kids. #IDedchat
A3: I am taking notes/tweeting about what I am seeing so I can go back later and "digest" it all. Be sure to copy down presentation links for reference as well. #idedchat
I wonder if you could have a conversation with your team (perhaps principal) and hone in on what the focus is...when new things come along - you need a lens to decide if it is just a "hoop" or if it fits in the vision. #IDedchat
Michael Fullan talks about making a "Skinny"plan - if things don't fit in that plan, it is compliance. You get a "C" in compliance and an "A" in what matters. It takes collaborating to make sure everyone agrees on what matters. #IDedchat
I want to do my best for my kids. I want to be positive for my peers. I want to be someone that others can come to for guidance if needed. Not sure I am doing what I need or want to be doing right now to meet those needs. This chat tonight came at the right time #IDEdchat.
Judging by your posts during the school day you are doing what is best for your kiddos and your peers both with and w/o curriculum. No fear about that! #idedchat
Another #IETA19 keynote is Mandy Froehlich - I found it interesting that the first thing that popped up on her website is this: https://t.co/PChyLvQ0VP#IDedchat
@froehlichm is another great educator. You will learn so much from her. Make sure to meet up with her, too. She is also a great karaoke singer. #idedchat
Our final question(s) tonight is for those sessions - Why should Idaho Educators join Twitter and #IDedchat ?? What is the value of a PLN (what have you discovered?)
I think people even beyond Idaho should join twitter. You are able to make connections with fellow content area teachers beyond your district, county, city, state. See how everyone does things. #idedchat
Our final question(s) tonight is for those sessions - Why should Idaho Educators join Twitter and #IDedchat ?? What is the value of a PLN (what have you discovered?)
I've re-evaluated my "everyone should be on Twitter" mantra. I'm focusing more on meeting them where they are... and eventually getting them to try new stuff like Twitter/etc. I'm making it more about what I can do, rather what I think they should be doing. FWIW #idedchat
R4: there are so ma y answers and inspirations I gain from having a broad and far reaching #PLN. I can bounce ideas off others who have different perspectives than I do. It’s like going into a classroom of a different content teacher any time. #IDedchat
Our Ts are doing so, so much each and every day. Twitter might be overwhelming. I agree... let's encourage them to try, but more importantly, I want to learn about them & help them leverage what will make their teaching more powerful & engaging. Simple, but not easy. #idedchat
It was hard for me to get there, because like you, I still see such value in the Twittersphere! But I've seen lots of other great things to help me see all sides & encourage rather than demand. :-) #idedchat
I think it is important that they understand the value of connecting with other - F2F and virtually - important to get perspectives outside your own circles. #IDedchat
Yes, very much so. I also think I need to rethink my strategy for the virtual part. I want to make it as non threatening for them as possible. #idedchat
R4: there are great educators around the country doing great things. You might not think what you do is great, but share and you might be an inspiration to someone else. And you might find that inspiration from someone that you follow. #IDedchat
Thanks @averyteach for another great chat. Hope those attending #IETA19 have a great time. Will be checking #idedchat for great resources. Stay warm everyone
