#TOSAChat is a chat on Twitter every Monday night at 8pm PST for TOSAs (teachers on special assignment), including all edtech and instructional coaches.
I’m Jennifer, author of #socialLEADia & T-L from Newmarket, ON. Twitter is my 1st love & I still learn so much here, but Voxer is awesome for more in-depth convos. Really loving some FB groups & of course my Snapchat #singoff group! Let's go!
#TOSAchat
Hi #tosachat. Joe, Math & STEAM Coach. Favorite social media platform is Twitter. It’s definitely been the most powerful way to connect with educators around the globe.
Alana, work on PD and programs at an education nonprofit. Twitter is my go-to, but I'm also still on FB (😬). #tosachat Hope everyone is doing well tonight!
A1: This is one area that I am working to improve but I hope to use Twitter and email to showcase the amazing things that @PSUSD accomplishes. #PSUSDfam#tosachat
A1: so many ways to promote the positive! We have a school YouTube channel and Instagram and it’s a great way to spread the positive stuff our school is doing. #tosachat
A1: My #googleei project, the Cardinal Innovation Center, is designed to promote the positive student work our students are doing in light of the poverty and hang violence that plagues the community. #tosachat
A1: I use my professional account to highlight all the amazing work of the teachers I support. This will definitely continue for years to come! It’s been great to use the hashtag #tosasnaps too
#tosachat

@TosaChat, @cogswell_ben, @peerlessgreen, @EdTechAri, @kmartintahoe, @KarlyMoura
A1: I really love how @MrsMurat hosts a twitter chat using the hashtags #positivelykind & #usetech4good with her students with the sole purpose of flooding the internet with positive. #TOSAchat
A1 I have used @Flipgrid for PD, content, Retirement videos, etc. I teach digital citizenship K-6. This helps me focus positive behavior with tech. #TOSACHAT
#TOSACHAT A1: I take pictures and share classroom successes with district leadership! Our teachers and students are doing amazing things and I like to celebrate what I see in our schools.
I can't promise you that (right now), but if you have a @Starbucks card and DM me you email address on the account a little friend may help this morning!! Same goes for you @JCasaTodd#tosachat

A1 the convos I have w folks around the world via Twitter/IRL help spread positivity as we share, celebrate, collaborate & make global connections to impact teaching & learning. I use Snapchat Stories, Podcasts, Insta & FB to share + showcase amazing things from my PLN. #TOSAchat
A1: Where do I start?! Classdojo to enable parents to see what's going on in my classroom; Skype - to connect students with the rest of the world; Twitter - to get in touch with writers whose books we read in class and I could go on... #tosachat
@kmartintahoe has always said, “Tell your story. (If you don’t tell your story, somebody else will and that may not be the correct version of the story)”
Or something like that. #tosachat
There is a blog feature so probably. The great thing about it is the parent connection and digital portfolio. It's so awesome to get a SeeSaw journal entry in the middle of the day from my son. #TOSAChat
A1: I use my twitter account to make sure to pass along all the new #GSuiteEdu news, tips & tricks to my #pln. Also use #AlisalStrong to promote the great work of our Ts & Ss.
#TOSAchat
A2: Fear! But we can’t let fear stop us from supporting our kids particularly as they are on social media platforms at younger and younger ages.! #TOSAchat
Hi Joe :) I used to be more open to it from my personal account, but post / interact on FB less and less. My org actively posts, as did prior employers, so professionally in a more arms-length way you could say 💪💪 #tosachat
A1: I use personal acct to promote Ts & their work w/ our Ss. I also use my Techknowledgy Newsletter to give shoutouts to Ts doing awesome things in the classroom (well, for half of the year. Newsletter took a backseat to admin but it will come back in fall). #tosachat
A2: Teaching responsible use. Showing students how to balance virtual and IRL human interaction. Reality has no filter. @cogswell_ben is quite good at teaching this. #tosachat
A2: Age limits and privacy are problematic. I wonder how others are dealing with these challenges. I would like to have a classroom Twitter account, but wonder about challenges in doing this #TOSAchat
A2: It’s always about purpose and communication. At the elementary level, parents need to hear and understand the purpose. Clearly communicating that is critical. #tosachat

Bon Apetit chef has a series where she recreates popular candies from scratch. Vids are filled with trial & error. Great tie in for math/science cooking. #process#tosachat
I use Twitter, staff meetings and the ICT newsletter to showcase what we do really well as a school. Teachers can be humble but their work deserves to be seen! #TOSAchat
A2: Ts seeing the value of posting student work is sometimes a barrier. Filters help, and I like to point them to other colleagues as examples #tosachat
A1: you know I love to share videos on twitter.
Funny story - a SD in Colorado specifically asked for ME to come out and do their PD this July! “We want that guy who does all the videos in twitter!” And I don’t even do PD - probably not qualified. Maybe I’ll try
#tosachat
A2: A student-led social media account can be awesome to empower students to make good decisions about what to post & to learn about the tools in context. Great to communicate with parents & teach them too! #TOSAchat
A1: Sometimes leadership is taking a risk and trying something new and then sharing the outcome, good or bad. It gives me courage when I see others do the same. I also like to remind others that they are not alone and it can be hard, but to not give up. #TOSAChat
A2 I am always concerned with Ss privacy and if the Ps and signed consent. I go from school to school and like to share Ss successes on twitter. #TOSACHAT
A2: I believe that students need to be taught to use social media appropriately. I feel like a common thing is to ban kids from all social media, but instead we should hold their hand through the process and teach them good digital citizenship #tosachat
A2: I think lack of knowledge is the largest holding point. What are we allowed to post? We overcome that by using our SIS to denote what students are allowed to be published and communicating with parents best we can. #tosachat
A2: I think one of the main struggles with using social media and students are poorly written media release policies that give in to parents fears & misunderstandings of what/why we’d want to use social media with Ss, to let them shine for a genuine audience.
#TOSAChat
A2: Student privacy is the biggest barrier, as far as I'm concerned. Having support from district-level Admin to be using social media w/ Ss to teach them how to navigate this digital world properly is ideal. #tosachat

A2: to overcome obstacles - create a safe controlled environment, show the value, then go for it.
Get the nay sayers to be advocates they’ll be the loudest ones!
#tosachat
i would put the twitter account in my own name and let the kids do that actual tweeting from a device of mine. Kind of like a daily reporter but for twitter. #tosachat
A2) my district Too much protection & lockdown! My staff have to bring YouTube vids in on usb for lessons #Fear of blame & compensation culture Yet at home Ss are Not protected! 🙂🙃 Topsy-Turvy #TOSAchat
A1) Love using twitter, podcasting, blogs and even emails to shout out some of the positives noticed on a day to day basis! Theres so much goodness out there!! #tosachat
A2: Not knowing how to protect students from the social media perils and/or student misuse of the media; The fix? Promoting all aspects of digital literacy including the proper use of social media #TOSAchat
#TosaChat A2: Student privacy is a huge concern - so many Ts are unaware of the laws when it comes to sharing! Step one is having clear district and school policies on what's acceptable use of social media.
A2: Making sure students have clearance to be photographed and posted. We are an Opt our district which helps. Use #Aviary free app to blur out faces when needed. Post student work instead of just student🙌🏼 #TOSAchat@TosaChat
I've said for a long time that we need to drop the whole "digital" from digital citizenship. If we're teaching citizenship this also applies to online behavior #tosachat

A2 #tosachat we need to continue to help our Ss learn how to utilize social to build others up, make a positive impact, contribute to a bigger purpose, etc rather than just post random stuff that lives on forever as their digital tattoo...
Q1: I used a classroom twitter feed to engage with students and parents about the on-goings of the class. This lead to students reaching out to their favorite authors, and getting responses. Engagement via social media. #tosachat@TheMargolin@_MalloryWilson_#students#edtech
We have district-level support for Ts to be sharing Ss work on Twitter. As far as Ss using social media, since we are TK-8th, I support Ts in having class accounts for everything and allowing different Ss to run the accounts. #tosachat

A3: When I was in the classroom, we definitely used social media to share the learning from our genius hour projects. Be creators of content and share the learning, not just consumers of entertainment. #tosachat

@TosaChat, @cogswell_ben, @peerlessgreen, @EdTechAri, @kmartintahoe, @KarlyMoura
I think starting the conversation early is going to very important as we move forward. What are some ways that your district promotes digital literacy? #tosachat
A3: taking inspiration from my friend @TechCoachSusan we MUST give students a genuine audience to shine for. So they feel their work matters in the world, so they can interact w/ their peers from across town and across the nation. So they can feel connected to others. #TOSAchat
A3 So proud to have been a teacher leader for @ONedSschat A twitter chat led by a group of awesome students. We explore ideas such as #leadership#socialjustice#coding#digcit etc. Kids learn how to use social media to deepen conversations & to connect to others! #TOSAchat
And have students post things themselves under the guidance of the teacher! So many great convos about culture of permission, private vs public can result! #TOSAchat

A3: Appreciated @HowardKiyuna earlier plug for youtube; if allowed, Ss could learn skills they are actively interested in mastering. Perhaps for school, or for their own hobbies #tosachat
A4: This is where my idea for hashtagged learning comes in. I like to use hashtags to get kids to make real life to content connections. Students are challenged to find patterns and themes. #tosachat
Use an open forum where everything is public. Turn off the ability to receive private messages. Be able to print transcripts. Engage with parents via the same application. If you create a positive culture, they will remain positive and engaged. #tosachat

A3: Connect them with experts in the field and use it to provide an authentic audience...Or connect with another class right @techcoachjuarez !!! #TOSAchat
A3: I try to share all the things I learn with my Ss on social media. I also tell them that we are “being brave and trying something new”. Even my littles enjoy hearing about what I’m learning and get a kick out of me being a “student” too. #TOSAChat
Yes! A mentor of mine said that when kids know their peers will see their work, they will make it good. When kids know only their teacher will see their work, they will make it good enough. #tosachat
A3: Expose them to sharing opinions, reviewing, commenting, exchanging ideas, critiquing via various platforms. Show them how they can connect and network with writers, scientists, and/or peers from other states/countries. #TOSAchat
I like to assign a chapter in a novel we are reading for homework. Then students respond on an approved platform. They love to ask questions and build on each others ideas. A3 #tosachat
A3) Learning2Learn all staff need to have a @twitter account #batttuk Show Ss how powerful the tool is for PD. It's all about the #Hashtag & who to follow #TOSAchat
A3: Ss can write and comment on blogs. Show them twitter chats or create a mock twitter chat on google classroom. Use flipgrid or padlet! Oh goodness, the ideas are endless! #TOSAchat
COPPA compliance and CIPA compliance are the two big ones... there's another specific to CA. @EdTechSpec do you know that one off the top of your head? #tosachat
In reply to
@jordana_kaiser, @iluvteaching72, @EdTechSpec
we have a T who uses Insta and every day a different S is the storyteller - it's an incredible look inside her classroom as well as reinforcing positive SM use with young scholars... it's definitely an area we need to be purposeful in teaching and modeling. #TOSAchat
A3cont: Just remembered that using @todaysmeet is a great way to have students practice posting, especially if you don’t want their posts to be completely out in the world. #tosachat
A4: So many examples of using social media to connect and collaborate with others. It’s definitely not about any one SELF but being #BetterTogether. #tosachat

A4: Make people aware of all the educators and students sharing on social media! I think sometimes people don't even look because they don't even know #tosachat
We had 6th grade Ts in the same school use the blog feature and add the other classes so the students could have "blog buddies" at their school. It was pretty cool. #tosachat

A4: I probably feed the beast. When I post their stuff I show them the analytics page. Sometimes we work and I leave it up on the projector. Oops. #tosachat
A4 TosaChat is a great example of empowering others and sharing knowledge. Ts need more opportunities to join others that lift each other up. Ss need to practice empowering others also. It’s not a sign of weakness. #tosachat
A4: I love how @teacher2teacher empowers educators who are looking for help by crowdsourcing their needs and connecting them with those who may be able to help. #tosachat

A4 Connected @teachersperini at my school with @bar_zie ‘s students from Norway in order to learn about the @TeachSDGs together. We hope to continue the collaboration to show kids that they have much in common with other students around the world #TOSAchat
A4) To share all the #positives there is so much negativity in our Ss lives that they are bombarded with! Promoting positive outcomes for both Ss & Ts
Who is your hero? Follow them! #TOSAchat
A3 we need to show them!!! we can help Ss learn how a hashtag can curate a story... help them learn how to connect w authors, experts, companies... show them the power of collaboration & connection... we can model this and help them see endless possibilities! #TOSAchat
A4: Share causes I care about, highlighting Ts who inspire me, and share/celebrate Ss victories. I don’t think it has to complicated, but you have to be purposeful. #TOSAChat
A3: Empowering teachers to use social media in the classroom as a positive forum. The more practice & exposure kids get to positive social media, the better! #TOSAchat
Aw, Thanks friend! I am so honoured...and I also agree with you 100%. Celebrating others publicly is something we should all do more often. #AppreciateYOU ❤️ #TOSAchat
A4: Share causes I care about, highlight Ts who inspire me, and share/celebrate Ss victories. I don’t think it has to complicated, but I do have to be purposeful. #TOSAChat
A5: I’ve done 20time projects and love to see the students shine and in some-cases reach outside their comfort zone just because they have the space to do so. #tosachat
A5: A lot of this has come in the form of being available as a thought partner, finding resources, sharing ways teachers can explore or stretch themselves with their passions. #tosachat
In reply to
@TosaChat, @cogswell_ben, @peerlessgreen, @EdTechAri, @kmartintahoe, @KarlyMoura
A5: In the classroom it was #geniushour. Having kids explore their interests is a powerful excercise. With Ts its more about listening for their passions in their discussions and building relationships from there. #tosachat
A5: I do what I need to do but & I integrate my own passions. When it goes well it sends a message to do different. I think our staff does this. #tosachat
Funny enough, I don't feel sorry for my first two classes of Ss AT ALL. I was teaching self-contained ESL in a Chicago suburb. It was a makerspace before that was even a thing. We integrated tech all the time. It was awesome. I feel srry for my 1st classes in CA (NCLB). #tosachat

A5 When I was in the classroom I did Genius Hour. This upcoming year our school district is offering an @AlludoPlay PBL game. This will allow Ss and Ts choices for study. #tosachat
A5: Something simple is student interest surveys. I like to take the info from the surveys and add certain academic units, buy a new game, watch a particular movie, read a certain book. #tosachat

A5: I like providing students with a lot of choice. Sometimes I am unable to give them the universe to explore, but I can at least offer them some galaxies #TOSAChat
A5: I listen and observe. There are so many opportunities that arise when you really get to know your kids & what they love! And give them the opportunity to share their passions with others too! #TOSAchat
The dopamine kicks in. Like eating chocolate or winning money! Also its the fuel for the fire that keeps us burning cause most don't get paid for this. #tosachat
A5: Ask them what they like to spend time doing. What are their interest and hobbies? Would they enjoy the time spent learning more about the topic, idea, adventure, journey, invention? #TOSAchat
Oh for sure. #geniushour is not a "district approved" activity but there is so much to gain. Identifying the benefits is key to making a teacher feel comfortable with the concept. #tosachat
A5 From a tweet a few months ago, I got the idea for a what's your super power lesson for students to share and maybe staff, too! Recognize their strengths and interests. #tosachathttps://t.co/e16VYAaeno
A5) Build learner profiles for students and within that, get to know their interests, hobbies and passions. Draw on that when connecting students with other students! #tosachat
A4 Using #Powtoon to create videos of social justice leaders because we couldn’t find any good videos on Nelson Mandela and Cesar Chavez. Skyping with social justice leaders of their generation fighting for #DACA ! #TosaChat

A5 Teachers also have to find their "tribe". I encourage the new teachers that I support to add their passions to their lessons. If a teacher is an artist, he can add art to his lessons. If a teacher is a cultural activist, she can begin an afterschool club on activism.#tosachat
A5) for Ss, life outside of school. If they have a passion for something, #ShareIt link with likeminded strong positive people. Form a group, join a group, be that #ChangeAgent Show case your passion to your peers in school #TOSAchat
A4 #tosachat I love tweeting out what is happening in our #fsdlearns classrooms and celebrating our Ts and Ss with the world! I am known to run victory laps in my Ts classrooms, celebrating their learning and ah-ha moments too!
One of the best lessons I ever taught on this exactly was Rings of Responsibility by Common Sense Media! The Ss got the connection! #tosachathttps://t.co/qWLeltr7fw

A6: I want to get more teachers in my district on social media, specifically on Twitter. I want them to be able to build an awesome PLN, like the one I have on here. #tosachat
Yes! The information that typically goes from teacher to teacher is usually so vague... behavior or no behavior, academics (high, average, low) What does that really tell us? Replace labels for learner profiles that can help build those powerful relationships.. #tosachat
