#makeitreal - Great to be here! Ray, co-host of the Instant Relevance Podcast and @Blended_Math
Please join us on Sunday at 8pm EST for #edChatRI. This week, we welcome guests the @ATMNEmath Conference and @rimtamath
I've got some family and friends not too far away in Charleston, and I'd go to the state track meet at Eastern Ill every year. Thanks for joining the #MakeItReal chat tonight!
Hi Heather! I grew up outside of Philly and then went to college in the Lancaster area. Looks like a terrifying (in a good way) time in those outfits! #MakeItReal
A1: The best trick to student engagement is to include students in the planning, reflect, and iterate all with student involved. It's also huge to make learning connect to the real world.
#MakeItReal
A1: I have found that PBAs have really helped engage my students deeper than a typical test. Students grapple with content while also doing things relevant to THEIR futures not OUR pasts! #MakeItReal
A1: This is the #MakeItReal Philosophy! Find what they love, or use your relationship with them as a springboard for engagement! No more fake "real world" stuff, use ACTUAL real world passion to engage!
A1: Make the kids a part of the planning process. Let them help you create rubrics and design the format of their lessons. They will take pride in their work. #MakeItReal
A1: Incorporate as many of their interests in everything that you do! The more you know your students, the more you can tie things, people, situations from their REAL world into the classroom settings. Their REALITIES matter! #MakeItReal
A1- It is a pretty basic one...but...anytime I can work in movement into an activity the results are so much better for my kids. Simple but gets results and helps kids from anchoring down in class. #MakeItReal

I wrote an article about engagement in the classroom...sure to make you think, even if you disagree with my beliefs:
https://t.co/qRipGe0M6D#MakeItReal
A1 it all comes done to building the relationships necessary to find out their passions or help them discover their passions. Make it meaningful and relatable to them and constantly work to make personal connects with the content and atudents #makeitreal
A1: relationship building with critical thinking as the foundation of all activities. The conversation sound different when they are working together and thinking critically about the task. #makeitreal
A1: You cannot go wrong with relevance. When we connect what our Ss are doing in class with the world outside, it becomes real. Had our 8th Graders start web design today. Some fought back and insisted in using Slides, but I argued my why and won. #MakeItReal
A1: Combining learning (The Power of Masks as used in Lord of the Flies) with Relevance (Halloween) by discussing it while wearing masks & face painting! More to come tomorrow! #MakeItReal
Yes! Learning to move beyond the old fashion worksheets (though some do still have their place in ed) and finding ways to build in relevance and be authentic to them is crucial for engagement and longterm success for Ss! #MakeItReal

#makeitreal - A1 - Relevance matters. Don't just teach something because you are supposed to teach it. If that is the reason you are teaching something, then you should be teaching something else. If anything, teach it because no matter what you teach, you are growing kids brains
A1: enthusiasm! I try hard to remain "on" during each class period. It's hard but without it, most of my students will check out in minutes. #makeitreal
Yes! It feels a bit like putting on a show, it is exciting... and also why I likely come home so frequently and am absolutely exhausted! :) #MakeItReal
A2: The scary good lessons I've seen this year have all had Ss in the driver's seat. Relationship building/maintenance was integrated as well as student voice and choice.
#MakeItReal
A2: Probably #AppsDay. I designed a hyperdoc to teach Ss about the essential apps they would need to know for the year. @PHausTech was kind enough to come in and co-teach it with me. It has been a huge success this year, since Ss already know how to use them all now! #MakeItReal
A1- I find myself getting stumped on these questions because the answer is "it depends." If I'm referring to all courses (4) I'd say vary the learning approach often. #MakeItReal
A2: To prepare for my 1st every S led conferences last week, I had Ss create @AdobeSpark webpage to with 5 categories of learning from the quarter. Ss picked how to show what they know! They did so well! #MakeItReal
#makeitreal - A2 - I am planning my first full day PD for about 30 teachers that I coach. I am excited about having the opportunity, but it is definitely daunting to have the responsibility of people's time, when it is so precious in a school setting.
A2: My students did a Macbeth Twitter Chat. Each group was given a character and had to respond to tweets from the witches. They also had to stay in character. They had a great time, and they delved deeply into the text. #MakeItReal
A2: As an admin, I designed a "lesson" for parents on how to help their kids with math homework here https://t.co/yjSy7DzBa1.
Spoiler alert: It doesn't involve teaching them math!
#MakeItReal!
I really believe this is the best thing I do for my students:
A strategy that allows Ss to assess their learning via feedback, plan for revision, and practice retrieval of information.

A2 we started Genius hour during our intervention time this year for interested students. We have teachers using gamification and that is so cool we also have changed our math curriculum and are using. #openupmath our Ts are trying all kinds of cool new things #makeitreal
A2 Extremely proud is the PD the team and Inhabe come up with this years. It’s is T driven and S focused. The Ts are passionate about the goals and Ts are leading so much of the PD. We have so much talent within Peine Ridge. #MakeItReal
A2: Student leadership opportunities for 100% of our Ss. Ss are planning spirit days, encouraging kindness, making decorations, running food drive and more! All staff are involved too! Scary good!! #MakeItReal

A2: my math students just started the planning/budgeting process for building a house. Algebra, geometry, modelling. Real world research and math concepts. I'm excited to go through it with students! #makeitreal

Right. It is important for them to see the positive uses of social media. There really are wonderful benefits to using it. They like it when we trust them, too. #MakeItReal
Right? Love them! Ss do too! Several added more than required! Did so well presenting to parents and articulating their learning too. So cool! #MakeItReal
A3: I would have to say it is the feeling of hope you have for the future when you talk to many of these kids. These are the innovators of tomorrow and everyday we have the opportunity to help them find their spark. Both humbling and exciting! #MakeItReal
A3: The best treat in teaching for me is when compliance turns into
empowerment. When Ts and Ss realize the power of leading their own learning with others that truly believe in them.
#MakeItReal
A2 continued: We had our first #MapleParentCamp 1 week ago. It was amazing! A total “unconference”. Parents and staff had conversations around topics of interest to the majority! We used the law of two feet too! #MakeItReal
I love this! So much more relevant than when we were in school and the only thing we did was answer 50 questions out of the textbook each day for class/homework #MakeItReal
A3: The Ss are kind, keep me feeling young, keep me on my toes, unwittingly put pressure on me to be/do better bc they are always in it, no matter what I ask them to do/try. #makeitreal
#makeitreal - A3 - The best treat of my coaching role is getting to go into so many great classrooms at so many different levels. I was in K-2 seeing math happen with little kids yesterday, and I was in 5th and 6th today helping kids with Order of Ops. Every day is different!
A1 One treat my kids love is pulling new experiences from our mystery bags. (A sweet mom made a variety of sizes & prints yrs ago.) Everything from new math manipulatives & different blank books for Writing Workshop to sketching pencils or our latest chapter book. #makeitreal
Had a conversation with a parent last night at PT conferences when asked why we don't ban cell phones in my class. Trying to teach kids how to use tech the right way. #digitalcitizenship#MakeItReal
A3 The best treat is when I see the students really engaging, learning and having fun. Nothing better than that! And when I hear "thanks that was awesome" is also nice! #makeitreal
A2- The ones where I have the Ss learn, then re-teach where needed. This typically creates collaboration between Ss and they work at their own pace. I use the Google Classroom with Hyperslides, Hyperdocs, and I integrated #FlipGrid this year. #makeitreal
A3: When I see the light bulb of learning light up in a S, that's my treat! When I see a T make connections to something awesome they can now use with their Ss, that's my treat! #MakeItReal
Awesome! If you have one to share, I'd love to see how that works... Been trying to find an effective way to incorporate podcasting into my class better than I have in the past. #MakeItReal
A3: Building strong relationships with Ss, staff, and families. Knowing I GET to go to school each day and make a positive difference. Every day is a new day! #MakeItReal Tomorrow begins #NotableNovember!
A3: The best treat of teaching is seeing my students excited about learning. Love to see their eyes light up when they get something. Another best treat is getting to be a part of their school life. #MakeItReal
You've all been amazing tonight! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this holiday evening! Don't forget to #MakeItReal for your students every day!
Thanks @MrPStrunk for taking charge tonight!
A3Excited for our children's future!Seeing a child come in today who was struggling in reading, working w/ a T 1:1 reading books, put a smile and excitement into the S face! He's finally finding the love of reading with books that he's int. in! So proud of him! #makeitreal
A3: Watching the lights go on for students that I have been chasing and slightly out of reach. Reframing their performance and placing it alongside of their potential. Calling them to a higher level of excellence. Emotionally exhausting, but incredibly rewarding. #MakeItReal
Thank you all so much for coming! I hope you had a great time, and I hope to see you in #waledchat tomorrow at 9pm ET! Thank you again to @MathDenisNJ for letting me host the show! #MakeItReal
I just surveyed my Ss today. Their device of choice was overwhelmingly smart phone. As I say with surprise while participating in a chat on my phone. I used my laptop once and couldn't keep up. I support a BYOD initiative. 😁 #MakeItReal
A2 After looking at engaging photos & creating math questions, each kindergartner is creating their own scene of thoughtful math. They're grouping collections in diff ways, counting & recounting, documenting numerals & sending photos for us to teach from at school. #MakeItReal
I agree. Mine would rather use their phones sometimes as well. My thought is that as long as they are on task and getting the job done, the device they are using is beside the point. #MakeItReal
Had so many conversations this week. I am basically on empty tonight. I just want these kids to win, but right now my bucket is running low. #MakeItReal
That's the tough part of EDU. Rest tonight, fill the bucket. Hit it again tomorrow. Lather, rinse, repeat. Crazy way to make a livin' huh? :) #MakeItReal
A3 My best treat is returning to school tomorrow - yes, even the day after Halloween - & spend the day learning incredible things, sharing stories, reading the best of books, counting new collections, just living life! #MakeItReal
