How do you best prepare your students for standardized tests without teaching to the test? This is something I still struggle to grasp as a preservice teacher #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Q1: How do you best prepare your students for standardized tests without teaching to the test? This is something I still struggle to grasp as a preservice teacher via @ms_Tuten#21stedchat
A1: This is hard to balance. You need to keep it interesting but still hit the standards. A little easier in math because of the vertical nature of the subject. #21stedchat
I practice question formatting/style using my content. We give ACT and ACT related tests. They have specific science formatting but the content varies. So itβs hard to teach to the test in that area. #21stedchat

Remember standardized testing including science portions are reading tests. We have switched to the SAT in MI for HS plus to subject tests in Sci and SS. #21stedchat
A1: This is a very hard question to answer but I would also agree that if you teach the majority of the core standards your students will be fine. As teachers we should be confident in our ability. @barbersclass#barbersclass#21stedchat

Q2: Via @kobriengcs What are some of y'all's favorite end of year lessons/activities? I love hearing about what people like to do to wrap up the year. #21stedchat
A2: This is when we do in my Gen Chem class - Barrel crushing, hot air balloons, soap making, ice cream making, fireworks science. Fun Science #21stedchat
A2 try new tools for next year? Look for snafus and bugs. This is a time to play for the next year. Not as much for content but give the students new experiences #21stedchat
A2: I have volunteered in a first grade classroom back in my hometown and my favorite thing they do to wrap up the year is going out to the "land lab"(outdoor area) and they learn about the various flowers and plants. @barbersclass#barbersclass#21stedchat

A2: I haven't had my own class yet, but I would like to look back at where the students started in the beginning of the year and look at how much progress they have made #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
@Flipgrid is really easy to incorporate in any class at any level. Ranging from Ss teaching new content to each other (tech version of jigsaw), review questions, exit slips...#21stedchat
Change the test.
I know, educators only have so much control but if it was less about memorizing info and more about critical thinking, problem solving & other life skills, perhaps everyone (teachers/students/principals) would be less stressed when the test came.

Show a Planet Earth video that fits your part of the world and then go out and find some of the things shown...except bears and snow leopards of course. #21stedchat
A3: in the class I was in this semester, we used laptops for MobyMax and Google Classroom, which the students loved! #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass

Have them create digital portfolios as the year progresses. If you use standards based grading, have Ss chart their summative scores as they test and retest. #21stedchat
I am loving all of these end of year things y'all do! Your classrooms sound like fun! I'm having my 11th graders do a "trash or treasure" argument: argue to trash one thing we've done this year and treasure the best thing #21stedchat
Thats a really cool way of adapting what you do in your classroom! My 11th grade teacher just had us answer a survey.(which is not that fun) #barbersclass@barbersclass#21stedchat
Yes, but our goal as educators is to inspire and drive lifelong learners (which standardized tested is proven to diminish.) There must be real disruption by educators who know best. #21stedchat
I was talking to a Congressman and he said they need something to check to see what they are doing is working. Their answer is standardized testing. We need to show them another way. #21stedchat
A4: I have asked my students about their personal lives, and while some havenβt been very far, others have moved from different countries and it really widened my perspective #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Wow what a troll tweet? Maybe you are new to my tweets but sometimes small steps are needed. Disruptions come from ground level activities. #21stedchat
I think my teacher ed program was great and they did so much to prepare me for the classroom. At the same time I still felt there was so much I didn't know! Especially when it came to classroom management. #21stedchat
A5: I feel that I am learning new things everyday in my classes. The things I am learning will help me to be a more successful teacher and the various discussions we have help me to get a better understanding of what it will be like. @barbersclass#barbersclass#21stedchat
At the same time I've been in the classroom 7 years, and so much has changed in that short time- there is also quite a bit they couldn't necessarily prepare me for, except to be flexible and open to change! #21stedchat
A5: I feel very prepared so far; at Kent I have 5 semesters of field experience, which lets me to apply what I am learning in a hands-on way #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
How about you stop spamming the chat and actually contribute? Are you talking about the Prodigy they internet dial-up service or Prodigy the band? I am confused by all the Prodigy. #21stedchat@dprindle
Thanks. This is a very sore subject here with T's on Twitter. We feel helpless a lot. Because of the money and power behind stdzed testing. #21stedchat

We are closing in on the end of #21stedchat thanks for another great chat. @Edu_Thompson will be back next week with a new topic. Any last comments? #21stedchat
A1) teaching to the test seems to be controversial and a hard thing to avoid since schools are ranked according to their students scores - i think we shouldnβt emphasis these tests as much #21stedchat
A2. I love getting the kids involved and enthusiastic again! I always create some sort of contest/ Reinforcement to keep my students from getting burned out! #21stedchat
