My fav story is the time when the girl who hated reading finally found her book in 4th grade! Don’t give up or label a kid a non-reader! Keep trying to find the match! #bfc530

I think so many of my Ss come in feeling a certain way about school and they are only grade 3. My job is to have them reach potentials they never thought possible. #bfc530

Lots of stories of students who the system had labeled as "failures" beating the odds and leaving @tcechs with an AA degree 2 weeks prior to a HS diploma...relationships matter! #bfc530

I had a Student with done pretty serious ADHD and behavior issues. The whole team at school put in some serious and now she is thriving in middle school. #BFC530
When I was in the classroom, every day that I refused to conform to the system expectations to grade students. People say we can’t all the time bc kids need grade. I disagree #BFC530
When those kids are labeled "bad" at math due to timed fact tests. Timed tests aren't math. It's amazing what these bad math kids can do when you give them a real life problem that is fun for them. #bfc530

Every time I turn on the news and hear the Public ed described as a 'broken system' I immediately dismiss the speaker. They view graduation rates as profit margins. They dont get us and shouldnt be allowed to comment on ed. #bfc530
I work with English Learner data and support ESOL teachers. There are often low expectations for these Ss, and assumptions are made that they "can't do it" When they become English proficient, they usually score higher on tests than non-English Learners. #bfc530
Great question! Not often enough, but at least once a month...in addition to daily co-taught #PBL. That and Critical Friends follow up changes the entire culture of a school. #BFC530
Fortunately, quite often, but I know that's not the norm for CR Ts. We do have pop-ins (aka Pineapple Chart) once a month and the culture is shifting and Ts are beginning to welcome each other in more regularly. #BFC530
When students demonstrate growth despite their “label.” Any time a classroom teacher shares that, I am thrilled for the kid first—b/c often they begin to believe that they can’t even in elem. #bfc530
I can have the opposite problem in grade3; Ss who can be “arrogant” bc school was easy until this point. They fall apart. My job to make sure they learn grit and perseverance and realize they can do so much more than they every thought. #bfc530
Lots of stories, most of my breakthroughs have come through @NationalHistory projects ... kids who would not think of themselves as “academic” thrive when given a chance to creatively express their knowledge #BFC530

I had nonverbal student whose mom thought he would never talk, or say “Mommy” or “I love you”..I think that is the good part about me being a slightly naive optimist ..I never thought he wouldn’t talk ..he is speaking in full sentence now including “mom” and”I love you” #bfc530
I set the bar high for my Ss, they complain so I tell them we're breaking the stereotypes that some perceive about their (in)ability to succeed. #bfc530
I am the underdog - I'm a HS drop out who has 3 collage degrees. I always love the kids everyone else gives up on. We all can do amazing things with the right mind set.

I deal with a lot of generational poverty too. Allowing students to see a blueprint for their life that is different from what has been pushed on them from day 1 is hard for them to understand, but it doesn't mean to not keep trying. #bfc530

When the KG. Ts share learning wins from some of the littles who entered school with little to no experience with letters, sounds, numbers, shapes. Sometimes we have babies who don’t even know their names, & the Ts work hard to make sure they are successful. #bfc530

I love hearing from a high school student or graduate that I kindled a passion for them back in middle school. That is my warm fuzzy win. That they came back to share it with me is what makes me feel it is all worth it. #bfc530
I find our system rewards grit ahead of talent. Hard to convince people to focus on building up perseverance and resilience but that's what I work on with my students #bfc530

Several years ago we competed in a regional contest. We were the new guys. My students placed 1st and 3rd in radio production . We caught a lot of attention for this. #bfc530
We had great conversations at #EdCampNJ#Encore this weekend about risk takers (both Ss & Ts) who find themselves shut out by peers for taking risks, having new ideas, thinking differently. It's too easy to criticize from the outside. Jump in & see how u can help instead. #BFC530

Celebrating and contextualizing. So many outside get stuck on the hours and months rather than the amount of work Ts put in. Others think all we do is color and hand out awards. Honestly, I don’t know that teaching would be as rewarding if it wasn’t such hard work. #bfc530
Yes it is! I taught a Ss in a developing country who had no hands, amputee as a result of a fire! He had the neatest writing, best book work and his Maths, incl.graphing were excellent. He had overcome his disability, others had to get rid of their disabling approach #bfc530

I have so many stories. My favorite from last year was one of my Ss, who was told he wouldn’t be able to complete the IB DP. He got the diploma and is in a great university. Don’t limit our kids. #bfc530

The time to quietly "just keep swimming" is over in broad social terms. Many don't see/know the living sits of Ss & other #community. Ts need to talk to non-Ts but admins should be the leaders in this #connecting. #BFC530
