A1: When I come close or have a "near win" it only motivates me to push harder to make sure I turn that "near win" into a WIN.
-
A1 it opens our eyes to new possibilities. We can learn from our near win.
-
A1: Perhaps success is a continuum. The near miss is only the next rung on the ladder.
-
A1 Having a near miss gives the feeling that something is working just may need to tweak
-
Hi Dan, welcome! I agree, that near win does give me motiv as well! want to work harder for sure!
-
Hi Spencer! Agree, we learn a lot from each part of the process, success and failures, always a lesson
-
A1: when I reflect on a near win, I can clearly see my strengths and weaknesses in the journey
-
-
A1 you learn from the experience and develop strategies to assist in success
-
-
A1 it gives us feedback about the many things we are doing well and provides a few next steps
-
Agreed, I like this analogy! https://t.co/iYNiEh3JQD

-
A1: Perhaps success is a continuum. The near miss is only the next rung on the ladder.
-
A1: Stdnt at University of Wisconsin Platteville here..coming close is often times a reassurance to students that they can do it!
-
A1: A 'failure' isn't a setback, but a learning point and a way to show growth and that you're trying.
-
A1: for long term growth a "near win" can be awesome. You learn from falling short while having a level of success, ego boost!🖖
-
Definitely and we can use this to reflect, consider next steps, part of our
-
Hi Dana, reflecting is so important and can use all lessons learned along the way, share exper w/ others too

Excited to join tonight's and connect with others to grow my

A1. Celebrating the small wins helps us 2 identify areas of strength & growth. It makes the task of improvement more manageable
-
Welcome to the chat Megan! Yes, sometimes we all just need a little bit of this to keep on going!
-
-
A1: A near miss makes me more hungry for my next move than a win does. Doesn't bring me down like a loss can, win win.🖖
-
The near win is the greatest motivation of all. No complacency, something to work on to improve and more fuel for the fire!
-
-
but at times we may have to move back in order to move forward
-
Totally agree. It makes the later failures more palatable bc you know you can achieve.
-
A1 things take time, it is beneficial to learning in many ways to take those small steps and near wins
-
True, that is what makes it tough sometimes, feel defeated, but have to pick up, think through and keep going
-
-
I agree, it gives you just enough that you want to work harder, try diff things, reach those goals!
-
True. I think the key is reflecting on the small wins. Why did you when then? How can you replicate that?
-
A1: the near win let's you know you're on the right track. It can be motivating if you have a growth mindset
-
resilience factors are important. How do you help folks that don't possess this trait naturally?
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
Important to ask those questions, continually as you work through something, look back and reflect
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
Hi Tom! Nice to "see" you!
-
-
We build relatshps, support Ss, share our exper with success/near wins and failures, model it
-
I immediately thought of as well
-
A2: small wins help you find a track to follow and helps build confidence while also helping you trust yourself to experiment
-
TED_ED: Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
-
-
A2 share your experiences especially new skills or understanding you are learning /developing
-
Definitely, and those boosts in confidence help to overcome fear of challenges, provide motiv to keep trying
-
A2: See learning as cartography. The further you reach the more you learn the bigger your world.
-
A2: Ss will mimic what you do and how you react to situations. If I fail in the classroom, I show them I accept it & keep trying
-
A2 Having these near misses allows me to show my Ss how I would approach these skills and my understanding
-
Right, I talk with my Ss abt what I am working on, struggles, near wins, show that we all exper it
-
-
A2: Deeper Questioning is always essential to model. I love the Disney concept of "How can we plus that?" Push to next level
-
-
By always being a learner too in the classroom. Teachers can’t be the fount of all wisdom - model the desire to learn constantly!
-
A2: telling them about your experiences, allowing yourself to fail in front of them.🖖
-
This is so true, I have had things happen like this, stand up, and continue what you were doing :)
-
model reaching by setting aspirational targets and reviewing progress and showing it's a 'journey'.
-
And this can open up grt conversations for develop
-
A2: model mistake making and model your thought process for moving on. Kids need to see growth mindset models.
-
Great point John. I tell the Ss I have been a Student longer than a T, I learn frm them as well, love this
-
A2: Championing the journey analogy. Owning failure, (that of teachers too), as part of the process.
-
YES. Doing research n this area & Admin stated storytelling was really important when helping Ts & Ss overcome failure
-
I really like this one, make it about a process!🖖 https://t.co/W41Te7cbD9
-
-
model reaching by setting aspirational targets and reviewing progress and showing it's a 'journey'.
-
A1:As a Teacher-Librarian, it is providing Ss connections w/ experiences & people that inspire them to see what they can become.
-
This has happened, and we make mistakes, work through them, model it for Ss, how to keep going!
-
And I like talking it through with them, explaining thought process, and hearing their exper too
-
A2. Differentiating support for Ts, making change transparent, creating culture of revision - Admin should foster these things
-
A2 by expanding their knowledge base as this underpins the way forward
-
Definitely, having some way to relate, reflect, attach meaning has so much value for learning
-
I feel like a lot of classroom modelling can be done by sharing of ourselves and being open with Ss.🖖
-
Making those connections is critical start with building relatshps, knw Ss, their needs, interests, CR culture
-
A2: Goal Setting and progress meetings are a great way to learn about small wins and then raising the bar.
-
So important for everyone to have a model, see and share experiences, conversations to grow from
-
Agreed! We learn abt each othr, build that CR culture and support, helps in so many ways!
-
Couldn't agree more! Start building relationships first, https://t.co/PYGyDTEu8p
-
-
I feel like a lot of classroom modelling can be done by sharing of ourselves and being open with Ss.🖖
-
making connections is so important! Ss won't try to learn from someone they don't know or care about
-
A1: Ss who come close try to improve for next time. Ts should validate Ss' attempts and efforts which will motivate them.
-
And they need to feel comfortable coming to ask for help, we have to build that in our CR
-
-
-
Truth! Ss that are far off target & not understanding the concept means Teaching failed. We must own our mistakes
-
And having time to work with Ss, talk and help them thru the process will shw we truly care & support them
-
A2: In order to reach each S you need to know their needs and what they enjoy/can understand. Don't ask a fish to run a mile.
-
-
This can be tough as Ts to own it but we have to in order to help Ss achieve & grow
-
-
-
-
With enough "near win" experiences Ss may become educated!
-
Knowing abt them so helpful, how they learn, interests, needs, so we can fully support them
-
near wins teach them we are not masters of everything. Learning never ends.
-
A3: Ss can learn both what they are good at and what areas they need to improve. Again, it's the best of both worlds for Ss.🖖
-
A3 Ss can learn that they are on the right track and that they should continue to strive and reach their goals
-
A3 that they learnd something along the way, their strengths, what they can improve upon, still learning!
-
-
A3: A "near win" demonstrates to Ts that Ss are on the right track. Ss can then REFLECT on their experience.
-
Right! There is always a next step, another way to look at something, try a diff methd, investigate more
-
A3:countless things! What didn't work, reflecting, conferencing/collaborating, new strategies, metacognition-think about thinking
-
And with our support & building the peer collab too, can help each S continue to work and grow
-
-
reflection is SO important, especially in this process
-
Couldn't agree more. https://t.co/zdyipaWUSC
-
-
hopefully near wins also motivates them to want to continue to work to gain the 'win'
-
-
fully agree. I always share stories of my near win experience but then still focus on the positives
-
A3. Get them to@goal set around near wins. They gain focus and practice reflection
-
Foster more relevance in the subject and makes Ss lifelong learners
-
Yes, want to shw that we have to keep going, model hw we deal with near wins, rethink and go!
-
It has to be authentic, meaningful and when Ss can attach that with relevant content, you see + effects
-
with a bit more effort & passion they may get the win next time
-
That's right, just enough to keep wanting to try, cant give up
-
Nearly midnight and I'm still learning. Thanks to 24 hour CPD 😬
-
Such a great list of ideas,
-
Trying some new ideas with classes now and will have reflection, want Ss to provide fdbk, have to reflect!
-
Like it = knowledge & leads to being educated

Great thing about being connected and Twitter chats anytime anywhere

TED_ED: Wrapping up Q3, on to Q4
-
-
A4: success = being able to solve something on your own. Mastery = understanding it deep enough to explain it to someone else
-
-
A4 Success when my period 2 was able to simplify rat exp mastery was when they were able to explain to me in their own words
-
I think as educators are we not in it for the long run ? For the mastery ? We thrive to be the best for our students
-
A4 This is a great Q! I enjoy seeing Ss experience this and having that moment, you can see their reactn
-
A student had SUCCESS with math, but finally MASTERED the concept!
-
When Ss can take info, explain in their words, teach othrs, transfer knwledge and apply, great!
-
-
A4: Um...just one? Nearly all of my first few attempts at something are success not mastery. Painting is the most recent for me.🖖
-
I recall struggling with math and having some moments like this, geometry was diff for me but didnt give up
-
-
Tonight's has been very enlightening! I will reflect on the topics discussed and other Ts responses!
-
As a child, practicing piano, twirling baton, lots of near wins with skills, persistence pays off
-
Thanks Kenny! I have enjoyed this too, have to go back and read everyone's answrs again!
-
right? I find some of my "meh" paintings are some of my favourites.
-
Such a great point, and whn we model this, Ss see it, and can be so beneficial for them, see our determination
-
Thoughts from tonight's - Failure is not the end, and success is not mastery. There is learning that occurs at every stage! 👍🏼
-
A4 over a period of 6 consectutive years completed 6 100 mile walking events
