Hi everyone! Phil, 5th grade teacher from NJ. Ready for
Hi I'm Thomas, 3rd teacher- learning more about 5th grade world!
Sampson County! I'm a media coordinator for grades 4/5. My sisters lives in Ramseur.
Welcome! The great thing about Global collaboration is that it is ageless!
Hi Everyone! 5th grade ELAR/SS Texas teacher here!
Good evening, all! Kylee from Pittsburgh, first year teaching 5th!
first question coming up!
Me too! So excited about working with a new age group!
A1: To help students realize that the world is not just what they can see, but huge!
A1: Global projects help kids see outside the walls of their room, the confines of their life, etc. Help to see the big picture.
Hey everyone! Amy from rural NC! Global projects are essential to provide experiences for students!
A1: Our students live in a global community with everything at their fingertips. Our job is to prepare them to navigate it.
A1: I feel they help build bridges to other places and tear down walls!
A1 GPs allow Ss to develop empathy & understanding for others' situation & experiences. GPs grow globally minded citizens.
I agree! the outside world is BIG!
A1: Ss can see past the borders of their own towns; make connections with peers around the world, and connect through learning.
A1- it helps kids develop empathy and allow them to have a better understanding of our world as a whole.
A1: I emailed over 100 travel bloggers requesting postcards, we are now up to over 300. Great for social studies, writing and more!
A1 Ss know they are connected to the world w/the Internet, global projects makes the world relevant & applicable to them
A1 My students live in a community that is not very diverse. GPs help them understand that things are different outside of Midlo.
Edu isn't local, it's global! Ss have the world at their fingertips, it's our duty to show them how to be mindful of the world
A1 Global project takes to large scale of the world and brings it to the personal level of the student
I agree..sometimes they see all the things they can do on the internet but don't know the relevance!
A1: Global projects introduces Ss 2unknown cultures & life outside of their town, allows them 2 compare how they live to others
A1: Our Ss are fortunate to live in a great area w/a great school culture. I would think the goal for us is to give back to others.
same here! Ss who might lack the means to travel deserve to have the world brought to them in the classroom!
A1: having Ss know that there r others just like them w diff opportunities amazes them-yes I agree we must help them 2navigate
A2: I have done The global read aloud, Skypes, and hope to get a virtual breakoutedu/math
A2: I want to do a project on water and hopefully raise money for wells where they are needed.
A2: Planning to do The Global Read Aloud this year with .. looking for more ideas!
A2 Among others, I've participated I the and will do so again this year.
A2: next up this year will be allowing students to blog about and chart postcards on a interactive map https://t.co/n8h8M4tvtH
A2: Planning to do World Real Aloud Day, continue Mystery Skypes, virtual trips. Looking for other ideas to expand.
Hi ! here from the DC Area. Pardon my tardiness.
How do you do a virtual breakoutedu? I have used breakoutedu and my Ss loved it!
A2: I am planning on doing mystery skype this year!
I am looking for someone to help me create it is willing to help
Got on whitelist for Google Expeditions. I would really like to produce some Experiences for GCardboard. Inclusive Ed, Tech, etc

A2- I look forward to participating in the Global Read Aloud this year, and I would like to try out a mystery skype.
I set up this folder to start collaboration!
A2: mystery Skypes, partner with other classes to talk about content like weather, geography, etc....Also my Ss read to younger Ss
it's super easy to implement with social media! Once the word is out PC's pour in!
we want to partner with another class to do a book club or novel study! I think kids will be motivated with authentic audience
A3: Twitter, Facebook, Skype...twitter is by far my favorite!
A3: I have used , google documents, google hangout, ,
A2 I don't mean to plug, but I honestly do get a lot out of lol.
A3: Instagram, Blogger, Peri, Twitter, and FB! I found on Instagram and it opened up my world! Thanks, Sarah!
A3- Twitter has been a great resource, especially when Ts from Ecuador participate in . 😀
A3: Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, conferences in my area
I think it could be done several ways I am still processing the best way!
A3 I use a lot of , , and Google Hangouts on Air.
Will have to check it out!
A3: Twitter!! Yearly Digital PLNs on FB, also NC has for teachers to reflect and grow their teaching practice
I have 6 homerooms of 5th graders! Would you like to partner with one??
A3: Instagram, periscope, Twitter, blab! Social media can work for us not against us if we apply it to our practice!
A3: and are my two new tools this yr
Love Edcamp! Went to my first one a few months ago!
which one did you go to? There is one coming up in Charlotte in October
Each teacher is different! can you help me remember?
A3 social media and digital tools are endless, local professional development matching interests also leads to collaboration
Thank you so much! You all are too kind :)
A3 a great resources to connect Classrooms based on subjects, grade level, size & duration is https://t.co/aJ6acJOPdc
IKEA is in Charlotte! More reason to go!
Hi everyone, Jordan from Princeton, NJ. I'm a little late but excited about this topic!
A4 haven't participated but showing my Ss the relevance, reality and meaning will be the keys for my preparation moving forward
A4: Key is students being interested and seeing the value in the project. Enthusiasm + Purpose = Success
A4 Providing time for your students to collaborate with others. Making it a priority.
A4 First you have to make it relevant to them, and pique their curiosity. Mystery Hangouts is a good start, then go deeper.
A3 https://t.co/aJ6acJOPdc is a great resource to connect classes w/ classes from around the world choose by subject/grade/size etc
Hi there. Joe Eyres from SF Bay Area. Tardy but ready to party!
A4 Understanding that they have to be responsible partners as well.
A4- It needs to be meaningful for the Ss and there needs to be an authentic audience for them, not just the promise of one.
Yes, making it relevant is key to all we do with our students.
A4 S interest & buyin is a key ingredient to any project; if Ss are vested, they will work collectively towards a common goal
A4: I really hope to do a project where Ss can connect on math together...showing them the importance
A4: letting Ss take the reigns and have input on what they want to learn and how they want to learn it, then learn with them!
A4: Making it meaningful and authentic. Also follow through is important.
Yes, teaching them digital citizenship prior is a must. Helping them create a good digital footprint.
A3 Google docs, Edmodo, Padlet.
Oh sorry, I'm Sean, middle school counselor from Florida
A4: make sure their voice is heard and yes the key is relevancy!
A5 Encourage Ps to use it with the Ss. Helped me when I started flipping my class and used . Ps w/ concerns watched w/ Ss.
A5: patience is very very vital here- model to the parents, show how it will be done- do not force it.
A5: Show benefits from past experiences and the impact. If parents still don't want kids involved, it's their choice, but most do.
A5 Invite them to your classroom and show them what you are doing. Give them a hands on experience.
Q4: It needs to be something that interests them...and something they can connect to!
A5: Involve them!!! Social media give Ss a key to outside the classroom but it gives parents a key to inside the classroom!
A5: (continued) parents only have seen her heard secondhand accounts- if possible show ex's (firsthand accounts) on how great it is
I want my kids to build scale models of something this year (bridges, landmarks) haven't got it all worked out
A5 I stress digital citizenship to Ps as well as letting them know that things are moderated...
A4 Key piece of GC is student interest and enthusiasm. Sometimes they don't know what it's about, but once they do they love it!
A5: "We/they" don't use it. They'd need to be 13 to get an acct, so I would drive it anyways. there's another Q in my response
Love this!! All of them want to be in the class!
A4: Involve them! Give them all the info and let them determine. I always stress the safe and secure aspects. Safety first!
perhaps pick a timely topic- climate change- and compare contrast regions
A5 invite Ps to join and learn, keep open communication, again show relevance to their own world to allow Ss to be future ready
A5: Open it up to them. Have usernames and pws shared with parents. They are part of the team!
Agree...show them the possibilities!
Q5: Doing it in a controlled environment. Twitter and Skype accounts are mine. Edmodo is nice!
a5: are we ignoring the age req's? "..they all have their own acct's anywasy". I've heard this reationale. Thoughts
A5 Keep an open line of communication going. Answer all questions they have, let them know you are there for them also.
A5: I agree it is a great teaching tool to teach digital citizenship, not only to the students, but parents as well!
A5 like any tool explain & show parents how social media can enhance S learning & educating them on precautions/safeguards to use
most apps I use have teacher acct's where Ss are linked through 1 teacher acct. Also, ask P's permission.
My final question of the night!
A6 Huge fan of . Also doing
A5: Can you record the session and post it on youtube to include them? Removing any apprehension would be a natural outcome, yes?
A5 often ppl think Ss are more mature bc they have tech;ignorance doesn't imply acceptance or permission;Educate b4 giving approval
A6: Read alouds, partner readings, book clubs, mystery skypes, whatever you can think of! We are interested!
Youtube is blocked for our students!
A6 also did for the first time last year!
Join the chat this Thursday! https://t.co/zVPRbM4NMA

Which book We are doing PAX
Well, I manage my class twitter account. They write down what they want to tweet.
A5 Am also considering a classroom FB page. I think a lot of my parents are on FB & frequent it more often than other social media.
A6: Looking for writing partners to create real world purpose; peer review, suggest, etc.
A6: Mysteryskypes, book connections, I am ready and rearing for anything!
This is a great idea, and a fantastic way to build a sense of community with Ps! https://t.co/Q0IiqhUqKq
Good point. I share my classroom Twitter handle w/Ps & they are a group in Edmodo. Will be using this yr. https://t.co/wuSyGmvoaS
