#WeirdEd Please introduce yourself and tell us which Enterprise crew member would be the best teacher (or person from another show if you're a sad person who doesn't Trek)
#WeirdEd Chris from Brooklyn, and obviously, Scotty would be best not only because he can survive a red shirt but he'll give you 4x the amount of time for deadlines!
#WeirdEd Thomas, student teaching, sick right now though. Uh... Well, for Star Trek, Dr. Crusher. Outside of Star Trek? Koro-Sensei. Moves at Mach 20, so differentiation is possible.
#WeirdEd Rebecca, bookpusher and just lately dramaturge, Dominican Republic. I would like to think I am mostly Picard. I fear I might actually be Data.
#WeirdEd Please introduce yourself and tell us which Enterprise crew member would be the best teacher (or person from another show if you're a sad person who doesn't Trek)
Paul from Colorado. I think Alfred Pennyworth would that dry teacher who is strict, but cares, and you don’t realize until the fourth quarter actually has a tremendously dry sense of humor. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Kinda weird though, the Star Trek Online has Red as Tactical (Warrior or main damaging class), Yellow is Engineering (kinda Tanky-ish, healing class) and Blue is science (Wizard, debuffing,) So, when I finally got to watch TNG, I got confused LOL
What I feel like we need is that meme where different actors/actresses are in the grid with school subjects, and they ask, "Which class would you never skip?" except instead of attractive people it's all the weird folks nerds like us love. #weirded
#WeirdEd I love Star Trek but I don't often bring it into class bc most of my kids couldn't care less. So how do we balance our interests and pop culture with theirs?
I just think it's interesting that the character is a combination of an old soul with generations of knowledge, plus a fresh new perspective. (I'm only in the second season, so I don't know yet how the character fully develops) #weirded

I cram Batman down their throats whether they like it or not. Luckily I’m starting teaching during the superhero boom, so even the girls are into it somewhat. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd I love Star Trek but I don't often bring it into class bc most of my kids couldn't care less. So how do we balance our interests and pop culture with theirs?
Augh on that first meme it's Muppet-voiced Adam Levine as the MUSIC TEACHER I find that incredibly offensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 #weirded
I used to love Data (still do on some levels), but Picard is the reflective one and therefore most likely to succeed as a teacher. Also, he tells people to 'Engage' and they do. Also, I'm Deborah, from Utah, jumping on for the first time to check out this chat... #WeirdEd
No shame at all in amusing ourselves first. Then, just when they think you are totally disconnected, throw out a reference they know. Keeps ‘em on their toes. #WeirdEd
I use a lot of pop culture in class. Although the stuff they'd choose on the surface = engagement, they often don't. It's like white noise for them. Our old stuff is "new" tonthem, and they tune in better. #weirded
I try to stay in tune with their interests - and thanks to their genius hour inquiries I’m keeping an eye on things like fortnite and a variety of youtubers - means they’re patient when I rattle on about comics and sci fi #WeirdEd
I also go full bore on just a few of my more kid accessible passions, so my kids can tell you from day two that I love Batman, Gerald and Piggie, Narwhals and the Denver Broncos. Most kids I’ve had connect to at least one, so we all get to bond over one of those. #WeirdEd
I check out their interests out and introduce them to mine. So for each of my students I have something in common with them. I also try to reference their likes during class especially on topics they don't understand. #WeirdEd
#weirded more seriously though, I nerd out to show them one way to do it, and support them when they have something cool to share. Example: a week ago I FINALLY did a crossover at roller derby. I told every class. They clapped. They get it.
#weirded I’ve always taken a holistic approach to teaching. I share what I’m passionate about because I want them to be able to articulate WHY they like something. Teaching students to think critically starts with self-examination.
#WeirdEd I love Star Trek but I don't often bring it into class bc most of my kids couldn't care less. So how do we balance our interests and pop culture with theirs?
I’m Kami from Utah and curious to what this weirded us all about. My teacher would have to be Yoda! Sorry not a Trekkie bit I thought Star Wars would be close enough. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd I feel like when I bring my interests in, it tends to have the effect of strengthening my relationship with my nerdy students but alienating my more conventional ones. :/
#WeirdEd
Ok, first- Neil Diamond has a twitter? What? Love it.
Second- I love playing "old" music at the kids and shouting " THIS IS WHAT MUSIC USED TO BE DAGNABBIT"
#WeirdEd I encourage Ss to be proud of their own interests when I openly talk about mine, usually in conversations. Though like @YennePaul I also speak in references.... It's natural for me at least. LOL
Then there are the times those interests intersect...like when I forgot to silence my phone and got a text...🎵Doofenschmirtz Evil Incorporated🎵
“Ms. L? Do you watch Phineas and Ferb?”
#weirded
I check out their interests out and introduce them to mine. So for each of my students I have something in common with them. I also try to reference their likes during class especially on topics they don't understand. #WeirdEd
There are lots of kids who pretend not to have interests at all. They don't want to connect sometimes. They're resistant to it, and by all means they have the right to be. #weirded
#WeirdEd I've started putting My Little Pony jokes into class, but that's all organic bc my boys are way into MLP (which is a shockingly good show). I also like making half my class roll their eyes
See, I reference Homestar Runner or the Dub Dub song or Hampster Dance and then shout about how great the internet was when it was all frames and Flash.

My guys are into fortnite so I told them the final exam will be an essay where they take 12 characters from throughout the year and put them in the game. Describe and explain the order of elimination. #WeirdEd
I do the same. There are all the Homestar Runner references, and I have yet to have someone get it. But I just really don't care - sometimes I have to keep it fun for me. #WeirdEd

Oh man, I been trying to think on this, but I can't figure out which nerd/pop culture authority figure would be the principal, and I can't get past that one bit. Gonna keep percolating. #weirded
Alternately, if a kid is sent on prisoner exchange into my room, I'm blaring Tori Amos, Juliana Hatfield, Eleanor Friedberger while they're there. Kid will never misbehave again. #weirded

#WeirdEd I used to tell them to take out their Handy Dandy Notebooks. They'd laugh and look at me strangely. Now they don't.
But Blue's coming back, so ...
While I haven't incorporated TV show references yet (my MS ad visor loved Simpsons jokes in his lectures), I put "the" in front of all social media apps.....the eye rolls are AMAZING #WeirdED

She couldn't remember how to combine like terms and make a linear equation. I then referenced Yona of the Dawn with Yona being mx, good guy as B and bad guy as y . It has officially become the Yona method. #WeirdEd
Y'know, an offshoot of inquiry based learning was that kids learned not to express interests cuz doing projects can be pretty good at sucking the joy out of them. #WeirdEd

Yeah kids are insanely into the 90s. More so as they get older; from what I hear, college kid are the worst.
Also Nevermind came out 27 years ago. #weirded

Our class music playlist has some rikroll opportunities but even more fearsome.... “Let it.....ahhhhh!” (I join in singing as long as I can before the song is skipped) music connections are awesome! #weirded
Oooooooof. I need more time to wrestle with this.
It reminds me of an anecdote I read in some literacy book, about the little boy who begged his classmates not to follow the teacher to the window to see the first snow. "She'll make us write about it!" #WeirdEd
Y'know, an offshoot of inquiry based learning was that kids learned not to express interests cuz doing projects can be pretty good at sucking the joy out of them. #WeirdEd
We had a decades theme day for homecoming week and I just dressed in my senior shirt and wore boots. Played 90s music all day. They requested mix CDs afterwards. #weirded
#WeirdEd Pushing the conversation along-
This is a fun thought game. Pick a fandom/movie/show and puzzle out which character would be the best teacher and why. We're allowed to argue.
What I try to do in that situation is to make the biggest fool of myself possible. If I look like the biggest idiot in the room, it makes them a little safer, maybe? Teaching music is full of nerd anxiety, so. #weirded

Another crappy thing is how strongly people express themselves about the things they don't like. If you're anticipating a vocal riff on "____ sucks!" motivation takes a hit! #WeirdEd

#WeirdEd Speaking of interests though, there are a few I'd like to really have a conversation about, like being a Logan Paul fan "Maverick...." 'Cause screw that guy, that's why. https://t.co/gJDAbF0TfS
Hey #WeirdEd! Just checking in to say I miss you and that a combination of meetings and kids' baseball practices are conspiring against my availability Wednesday nights. I hope to return to the fold someday, and hope I shall be accepted!🤞
#WeirdEd I want us to. There's too much agreement on edutwitter. That's how we end up with bullies getting away with anything and mindless cotton candy getting a million RTs
When I was 19 & super into Tchaikovsky, I picked March Slav (stop judging me!) to do an indepth Theory 2A project on. It majorly sucked joy out of the piece for me, possibly for good. #weirded
Y'know, an offshoot of inquiry based learning was that kids learned not to express interests cuz doing projects can be pretty good at sucking the joy out of them. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd I'm going with Elliot from Leverage. He's by far the most patient of the 5 main characters. Self sacrificing, but aware of his limitations. He adapts to situations and does what is needed.

#weirdED I have done a lot of student feedback surveys on lesson activities - it is wildly varied. I am going with getting to know how the students respond to activities and having as big of a toolbox as possible to vary the activities from unit to unit

My kids love projects! I give them broad topics so it just has to fall in the topic. right now they are reading books about WW2. My rule was our had to take place during WW2 and be about children. Surprisingly they chose non fiction books that I would'nt have assigned #WeirdEd

She would be a good teacher - you know she knows something but won’t just tell you and often has some artifact that you want to k ow more about but.... #weirded
#WeirdEd Makes sense. Though how about with things like Genius Hour? But then again, if there's categories to pick from like Art, History, Pop Culture, etc. It achieves a similar effect. Not exactly "their thing" but helps narrow

#WeirdEd The Doctor doesn't always explain the best
Where are we going?
D: The back of the ship
Why?
D: Because the front crashes first. Keep up.
#WeirdEd
#weirded in my case especially scary because my right knee got messed up 15 years ago and I haven't trusted it since. You have to trust it to let go off the left completely. It's taken me about 18 months of active trying to get there.
I had students in class naturally start to debate about whether it's okay to like Logan Paul. (They were making and giving short surveys and a question someone came up with was "Who is your favorite Youtuber?") Interesting bc I didn't have to insert myself #weirded
#WeirdEd If you'e listing Star Trek teachers, Keiko still goes near the end of the list. Mostly bc she "how hard can it be and these kids need something to do" her way into the job.
Colonel Potter from MASH would be the perfect educational administrator. Competent, always know where you stand with him, flexible even under stress, kick you in the butt when you need it. #weirded
I heard a great presentation from a Drama teacher last month who talked about his first assessment being how BADLY students could do something. It broke the ice & brought them into a safe yet fun competitive mode. He starts all new units that way and gets great results. #WeirdEd

#WeirdEd Applejack or Twilight Sparkle, but only if she has Spike or another assistant who can keep up and balance her. She tends to go...nuts. But Applejack's pretty grounded.

#WeirdEd Yeah, sounds like they had background knowledge about the morality though. My kids didn't, didn't see much wrong w/ his actions. I actually started getting heated bc as an Asian myself, it hit me haaardd, so I took myself out. XD
A couple of colleagues & I made a hyperdoc (a "choice board of choice") with ideas/encouragement on how to incorporate choice appropriately into lessons (best suited to structure, content, etc) https://t.co/PWZ5Mfd9Rn feedback welcome! #weirded

#WeirdEd I think Applejack would bug me as a teacher if I were in her class, but I'd like working with her. Twilight makes the most sense of the Mane 6
My nextdoor teacher asked me about this the other day. I need to do this more, too. My kids are so up in each others' business. It's driving me nuts. #weirded

Good one! #weirded after all, is the teacher always the one at the front of the class? Or the one encouraging (and sometimes manipulating) to get great results?
#WeirdEd I think post Revenge Obi-Wan came out as a better teacher if possible, but post Revenge Yoda definitely did.
I personally think Master Luke crumbled bc he had no support system to help him. Esp restarting an entire order...Solo. Heh.
#WeirdEd Lol. I just thought Apple was the most calm and consistently confident of the Six, but Twilight has done some teaching before. I think she's mellowed out over the seasons, though. So, her super-orderly days are few and far between.
I had a Luna Lovegood teacher. He was 60 years old and I learned about realy old movies. He taught me nothing for my AP World History exam thus why I decided mixed with Voldemort might help #WeirdEd
I don't envy you. When they come in as 6th graders, they have a sort of new awe for everything they do. That fades. By 7th grade, they fall into a hole of "what is happening to these kids" and by the end of 8th, they crawl out of the hole. #weirded

Having not seen many of these shows/movies bc I’ve been on too many twitter chats, I’m lost and feeling like my students in class who haven’t done the reading. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd I want Edna from the Incredibles, if we're doing Disney ( slash Pixar ) teachers. She's a great explainer of things. Also comically short. There's something about comically short female teachers.
For me, I think the kids have realized that if I overhear them talking about something adults might find upsetting to hear kids talk about, I don't get mad or anything, but I want to talk to them like a 1980s afterschool special... and they... they'd rather not #weirded

Belle would be a good choice, but I also think Bagheera would lead well....definitely not as fun, though. Gadget from Rescue Rangers is on the list, too. She's all about finding solutions but being totally creative - all options are available
Indeed. I had a (comically short) female coworker come up to me and say, "Mr. Burke, you look tired. You should sit down. Oh, you are sitting. Never mind." and walk off. Well played #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Yeap, I try my best not to, but maaannn, I've grown up holding my tongue because of cultural, societal reasons, so by high school and college, it's like an inversion. Now I just spew out opinions everywhere! LOL
#WeirdEd Apple Jack would be a good teacher to work with but I don't think I'd want to be in her class. I with Pinkie was a viable answer bc I love her...but she's not
Since we're all flawed, it's important we let our students see that. By being human, we make it safer for them to make mistakes and OWN them. That's where the growth can happen. In that space. And The Princess Bride is a classic. Just don't mess with Sicilians =). #WeirdEd

#weirded it makes freshman year tricky. They aren't held accountable in sixth grade, nor seventh, nor eighth, then they fail ninth grade English tho we are telling them the whole time that they will need to take it again to graduate. it's too late before they believe us.

#WeirdEd Gandalf would work better as Principal or Supervisor. He's very big picture, pragmatically setting up the pieces to achieve his success, but he does fight voraciously for Good.
Rowlf, definitely. Fozzie would never make it out of the teacher's lounge in the morning, or be able to sleep at night. Rowlf would take himself for a walk and sleep soundly. #WeirdEd
Actually yeah. My principal reminds me of Ms Potts. Great wisdom for young teachers and all grandmotherly towards students. And when it's time for discipline she comes down with the swiftness like Ms. Potts at the end of the movie #WeirdEd

Hey #WeirdEd friends - you might be interested in jumping over to tonight's #UTEdchat at 9 MDT (8 PDT) if you're interested in #SchoolSafety. We're all about sharing great ideas and good practice. Hope some of you can make it.
#weirded I agree that Dan would be a great teacher. But Roseanne has a place on a school. Could definitely see her as a counselor or social worker - she's real, and can get through to kids.
My school has the reputation of turning around a lot of kids with very low achievement and awful habits to be academically successful in high school. I feel fairly good about that. #weirded
