bilingual chat starting in 1 hour. Technology enhanced deeper learning! See you there!
Just like with tchrs, we need to model & share resources & ideas w/parents. They need to understand what we’re trying to do.
That's a big topic tonight. School works best when Ps, Ts, and Ss interests all align. Happens too rarely, I'm afraid.
Here is a Post I did for Edutopia on this subject. Save it for later. Educating Parents About Education https://t.co/3od30lvzof

Sounds good! https://t.co/3RKsKbpJjx
Two great looking chats about passionate readers tonight at the same time! What's a teacher/reader to do? #
We work hard to provide equitable access for each of our students and we need to provide the same for parents.
Those engaged Ts respect parents as experts in their lives, just like they value in their classes
Parents need to PD in parallel with teachers. If the Ts have read "Mindset" but the Ps haven't, you've got clashes on every topic.
Keep Ps in the loop and up-to-date on the articles and blogs that we read and how they form our practice.
absolutely! Showing relationships we've established with Ss helps to establish relationships with parents.
It's so much easier to share curated content. I have access and can be responsive to parent needs/interests/issues.
Agreed . Good answer. And equitable means caring schools for all families, not just priviliged

NOW Topic: As education changes and evolves, how do we bring along parents as partners in their children's education?
A1 Use of social media and other platforms invites transparency and engagement.
As with all change, start with "Why?" Include Ps with multi-pronged, sustained education program on the change.
Invite them into chats like this. Let them lead the discussion sometimes, too. https://t.co/iBnvZop2Cw
NOW Topic: As education changes and evolves, how do we bring along parents as partners in their children's education?
Parents need our patience & support in navigating school culture. Important to offer hope & opportunities to engage.

Right on Dennis… why are parents typically under engaged ?
Great idea… have you tried? How’d it go?
My district hold Parent University to keep Ps updated. Difficult to get attendance. So busy.
Parents deserve to learn in a manner that matches how the best teachers work with kids: differentiate and scaffold.
It is important to educate the parents about everything you are doing; help them understand benefits, reasons, purpose. Use
If we want PARENTS TO BE PARTNERS in their child’s learning then we must not view their questions/concerns as a nuisance.
Many parents trust Ts to be professional and to well by their kids.
We can only lead horse to water. So many different access points unexplored. It surprises me b/c am older than parents
Open sources, flipped learning, PBL, One to one laptops, BYOD, Standardized testing for starters.
We are launching our Parent University this year. Any advice?
MANY BARRIERS TO MEANINGFUL engagement of parents - knowledge, schoolwork, culture, language,
attitudes, after-hours. What else?
Howdy to the great folks of Got a great mobile learning story to share? Our proposal deadline is Feb. 8! https://t.co/FRv8Xt9MiD
Are the sessions livestreamed or videoed for later viewing? Does your schl offer babysitting during these events?
Exhaustion - of both parents and teachers.
I agree & feel it is also important to have a plan of action. How & when. I've offered different workshops=success
Good. But also, Ts may need to bring conversation to parents, not count on them to come to ours
Invite parents and teachers. Address their interests - we did a survey and targeted those topics.
YES too much on teachers and parents plates… How to reduce? Recalibrate?

in Twitter chats, have just been a participant so far. Did facilitate a session at . All had a voice.
Guess we need to give formative assessments to our parents? As a new dad, I'd be okay with that.
sounds right, but what is the water exactly?
NHS offered child care. No streaming bc we had invited guests/proprietary stuff. Haven't tried video. Yet...
Provide opportunities for Ps to see change in person at school. Give mini-PD lesson so they know what to look for.
Social Media has shined a very bright light on education. This new transparency might prompt many questions from aware parents.
Livestream it or record and post. Meet parents on mobile. https://t.co/1dTFj6Z8j4

Invitations to engage in content. Many families have expertise to share. 2 parents today explored circuits.
Parents care about what's best for their kids. We can't bury them in edu-speak. We owe it to them to show relevance.
… so true. View it as a compliment…say thanks.
It would be pretty awesome to engage a back channel conversation.
Agreed, but email has shifted number of Qs from parents that teachers must address. Exhausting, no?
Want to engage parents in education? What better PHONE CALL OR TEXT?
It behoove educators to educate parents about education. Partners are easier to deal with than adversaries.
If parents can help in some way, let them know what it is they can do for their kids.
I'm not quite sure what that means, but...yes?
I was really proud of one of the Ts at my school who was trying to help a P w/ language skills.
absolutely, but at least they're asking questions & trying to be involved in their Ss learning
AS YOURSELF, why do parents cringe when they come into contact teachers and administrators. Then don’t do that…
It behooves educators to educate parents about education. Partners are easier to deal with than adversaries.
Prefer text, of course, but it bears a stigma of being unprofessional for formal communication.
Yes, I've found parents are joining Twitter or following & using to connect & engage in conversation. Amazing...
Creating and supporting a twitter conversation if Ps aren't able to be there in person.
I think they want their images too - to make their visual connections https://t.co/Z2RyrgPnQ1
Whatever general info we share with parents should be relevant, enlightening, concise.
I think it depends on the parent & what message you're passing on. Text is great for quick info, but call is nicer.
Any info I am trying to share. My schl is small. Could be growth mindset, healthy eating, dealing w/grief.
No matter how well we're doing (or think we're doing) one thing's for certain: we can always do better. Agree?

Worst thing Ts can do is condescend to Ps. Perhaps there are many Ps who know more about pedagogy than the Ts!
What really knocks me out is a book that [...] you wish the author [...] was a terrific friend of yours - J.D. Salinger
What types of questions do you see parents asking in situations like that?
parents should not be adversaries but partners with school teahcers and administration to partner for student success.
It lets us shine some lights too- e.g. why homework?"
I have found texting parents works! Parents that work long shifts &cannot answer the phone seem to be able to text!
what do we want parents to know? For our part, we'd like them to know testing is not all bad, and can help learning.
Worst thing for Ps is to feel that their child's teacher is just cashing it in. No passion or care is so obvious to Ps.
Agree. That attitude is imperative for any profession.
Too many times school systems say that they want parent involvement but their actions say something else. Politics gets in the way!

I was mostly kidding. But maybe a new parent survey would identify Ps whose edu values clash with the school's.
for example, I have little patience for ludites, but Ts resisting testing I respect. Parents may be allies in the fight.

parental engagement is listening to them and responding accordingly...
For our Parent U, we did interest-driven lectures. We plan break-out sessions after large group preso, too. Sort of edcamp-ish
I am not a parent myself so when I call home and parents ask me for advice on how to parent I often fall short of words
Testing is an assessment and no it's not all bad, but the misuse and dependence on narrow results can be very harmful.
MEANINGFUL parent-teacher engagement requires constant flow of contact with parents. Need time…where t get time? Thoughts?
I assure you, we don't have the budget for buying programs. LOL
have students write about their week, what was learned...take home and read it to parents...
Transparency is very important. Having meetings at times that working parents can attend also helps! https://t.co/wLZ6tFBGRP

that's the thing - tests should not be viewed just as assessment! That view is harmful; retrieval practice aids learning
The 'rhetomatic' = teaching rhetorical analysis through structured inquiry. Very cool stuff.
Leadership must ensure Ps know their children are respected & valued by all adults at school. Foundational to positive partnership.

'As parents, if you spend all your time working, the streets or YouTube will raise your child' -
Parents are a Ss first and most influential teacher. We have to believe that in our hearts and act upon it. How do we all grow?
We used surveymonkey to gather info. Invite Ps to see expert. Q&A at the end. Snacks, child care, written exit survey
When engaging parents, don't always expect them to come to school. Ask ourselves, how are we going out to parents in the community?
What do you do when parents, community and school vision aligns but the districts vision does not?
any suggestions for how parents can learn more when teachers share almost nothing?
Have you tried engaging the principal/school board to request more info?
Oh it sure is!! Hope you don't think I've been successful but can always dream!
. Most parent experience in edu is based in the 20th Century. We need to update them. Why would learning be insulting?
Our mascot is our mouthpiece. We use his social media presence to post pics, dates, reminders, and drive web traffic
I think letting Parents experience what the kids do/use and how they learn/are taught would be great for them
Nice! Have you tried this approach with parents at all?
.sitting down to read "What to look for in a classroom" by page 1 of intro identifies what may be wrong in many schools

Mini videos can be texted to parents to view at home with their children.
I dealt with that as well. Just as with kids, relationships are key. I made it a point to know Ps names as well as Ss
I believe we can help 21st Century kids learn this. But it'll demand some unlearning from 20th Century adults.
Love concepts like "one book/one school" that engage parents & Ss to read in community. Creates a mechanism to pull parents in.
Many educators are digitally illiterate and being relevant in that are is their job.Pparents are not that different.
i created a watsapp group for parents so i can send pics of their work. Lots of them cant talk.
We tell parents NOT to go there. We will have ch do work in school if it is stressful.
Definitely agree! This is the root of many arguments - need to unlearn old habits.

Some Ps want the same access to learning as educators' PD. Others seek more voice. Tech. Disabilities. You name it.
an edcamp is a start but intentional convos designed around Hosting pracrices (of which edcamp is a derivative) are best
I would find it encouraging that parents are that invested. Is there capacity to meet the need/interest?
shouldn't we be inviting parents into the classroom to share expertise. That whole community thing
hosting levels the playing field for all voices 2b heard and contribute. It creates great, inclusive spaces for parents
